    UPDATE****
We've been using this system since mid-December 2021 and it's now June 2022. So we're 6 months in and it's worked well. The ability to pump in so much power to our battery bank while simply arriving at and leaving an anchorage is fantastic! We think high output alternators will be the norm vs a generator in the future. It's already becoming an option with some boat manufacturers. Our new CURIOSITY 2 hybrid-electric system is set up with high output alternators as a part of the eco-drive package. Different alternator manufacture, but same idea.
FYI, we were warned by friends with high output alternators that we would notice a slight drop in our overall speed. That's because power is being diverted to the batteries. For our setup, it seems to be about half a knot or so. For instance, if we motored with one engine at 1800 RPMs before we would travel at about 5 knots, now it's 4.5 knots.
We've also worked out a couple of bugs that we talk about over on our blog. So if you are considering purchasing high-output alternators, make sure to click over and read our latest update first: www.gonewiththewynns.com/this-changes-everything

How is the speed affected after the batteries have been fully charged?
Then the power output and, accordingly, the generator resistance should have decreased significantly.

6 months since you sailed into NZ. Wow. I know for you it probably seems not so long ago but for me, sitting here in Manhattan Beach, Ca, it seems like just a few minutes ago I was watching you sail from Tonga. Its been a crap couple of years for all of us but as others have told you, Sunday morning with the Wynn's has helped take our minds off of our struggles and helped the time go by in a classy, fun glimpse of your lives. Almost always positive, even during the most difficult of times, almost always a laugh about something, even chaotic uncertainty and always, such beautiful scenery. Please know that the few minutes we get to share with you each week has helped make all the tough stuff much easier to live with. Thanks, as always, for sharing your great adventure.

Suggestion first hand experience ; bring in fresh cold air in front of alternator , have your exhaust hose behind alternator and cables . This will bring ambient air to the alternator to cool whenever motors are running. I can turn my exhaust fans on from the helm, have idiot lights to let me know when they are on. This way it exhaust the heat out when shout down and you can turn off when cooled. I also have digital thermostats in engine compartments to monitor the temp down there. Love your videos! Please excuse my spelling .

That's a lot of electrical components that should make your lives a whole lot better over time. Aside from adding a few shims to the forward (if I recall correctly) head composting toilet to account for curvature of the wall, they have had zero issues with the Nature's Head composters and have had no trouble finding coconut coir for them. On the other hand, Jason hates working on the remaining marine toilet and has threatened to replace it too with a composting toilet. They had sound reasoning to keep one marine head, but I think Jason often regrets it! 😜

Jason I would mix the two mics together - you need the ambient noise for context, but the lapel will improve vocal clarity and cut through. That’s a pretty standard audio production technique, plus you have redundancy if one mic goes down. This assumes you have two audio channels on the camera of course.

Please forgive me when I offer the first of 2 suggestions regarding your spinnaker; likely you’ve been asked about it and answered a lot - but maybe you haven’t. So:
    1. There could be a particular reason for it , that I’m not aware of, but I think you’re losing so much by having the tack so far off the deck. So much air is going underneath and the luff is bobbling and losing lift as well. I would shorten the tackline and use the sheet more actively. As well, I’d consider having 2 tack lines at once, the second coming the bow of the windward hull so you can swing the sail more to windward allowing for effective drive deeper downwind and that stabilises the tack even more. If you look at the Sailing Florence spinnaker video, they use a pole on their asym to do same thing. I think can you easily gain maybe 2 knots with no more stress and loads.
    2. I never douse my spinnaker the way you do and I sail nearly always single-handed so I want NOOOO complications. I didn’t fly mine Portugal-Curacao or Curacao-Panama because my boat rolls too much in the 5 metre seas and there was also too much wind with me single-handing. But next leg is Panama-Brisbane (again solo and not-stopping) and I will for sure - but I am choosy about when. That thing that I do that you don’t is that I bring the sail in by releasing the tack (snap shackle), let the sail float out(away from the shrouds) and bring the sock down just ahead of the shrouds. This way, the clew goes into the turtle bag first (feed it in using the sheet and then untie it). The tack is the last thing into the sock, is easily attached to the other end of the bag - and I feed the rest in as I lower the halyard- AND I’ve never had a twist this way and raising the sail is therefore less scary. I’ve seen many videos on the 2 different ways but this works out the less-stress option from my experience.
Again, apologies as you’re possibly heard this before and thought this through too - and you rarely seem to have sail handling trouble, only I’m sure you could get much more from your spinnaker and have fewer handling problems.

You lose so much effect when you have it flying way up in the sky. Need to be 4-8 f closer to the beam. Could also be that you have a to small spinnaker? Those big alternators are a stroke of genious. Giving up the generator and gaining all that space is a very good solution for most boats, because of the huge loss of weight and the gain of storage. A set of bigger cables and some other mounting details is just peanuts compared to what you gain by changing the hardware. Although you take away a little of the power from the motors by mounting larger alternators, it is not really significant and you will rarely notice it.

!2v 4" inline duct exhaust fans are a boaters and RVers best friend. For exhausting heat in small spaces or to bring cooler air from out side fast. I have 3 in my RV. 1 in my tractor trailer cab and 2 in the engine compartment of my speed boat one in other out. Both turn on with the engine.

That’s what I call, Jasons exit from tiny locker, watching all four limbs do nothing but grab edges and play like an ameba trying to run the calypso line!!! Loved it. Am so impressed that you can do so much with only a ‘few’ working body joints 🎰 almost gave myself claustrophobia watching for any forward meaningful motion. Lovely limbs btw.

I think I prefer the audio from the Sony shotgun mic. I don't mind the extra noise, especially when you are underway. You definitely get the feeling that curiosity is sailing at a good clip.

For some reason this felt like a pre pandemic video. Things seemed 'normal' And I couldn't help but notice how fantastic those new windows looked. WOW! All that hard work on those babies! Your sweet home is looking so good! Saaaalute!

OMG! you two are lucky that you're both so tiny! Those little spaces that Jason gets into are amazing....wrapped around the table post and inside a hatch all at the same time. Great video once again.

Re Microphones… while the dgi lav mic does get rid of the background noise I prefer the shotgun mic sound. I wait with anticipation every week to watch you two sail, and what parts of your life you choose to share with us. The whole experience I believe is enhanced by the ambience and real life noise, and struggles.. thank you for making my Sundays here in Wet west Wales

I live in Texas so you two are sort of family and I get to live a life I could never do vicariously through you. Looking forward to more repairs and upgrades. Sailing Project Atticus and you guys are my fave sailing channels. Be safe and have fun.

I worked on boats for over twenty years as a marine electrician and the last scene in the bloopers just reinforced my decision to stop doing that for a living. Thankyou. Whenever I think to myself that it wasn't such a bad job, I'll just think of that scene and realize I am so much better off doing what I do now.

Jason & Nikki, I love your enthusiasm, setting the spinnaker, installing the alternator especially when things either go wrong or there is an added level of complexity. You never flag rather you add a new and stronger level of determination. Your curiosity, shows in all areas of efficiency, electronics, video editing/effects and music. Next time, new solar panels, dropping the old generator overboard and lots of other fun stuff. Un abbraccio forte a due.

  • @century2298

Well it's about time ! Yea ! More Power ! You have been needing that. Even if you kept the generator you needed those high amp alts. You were running the engine anyway. Good deal !

I look forward to seeing an update video on the performance of the alternators, and charging system in general, after about a year. I know that some manufacturers tend to embellish the actual charging rates while the practical usage is, in actuality, different and less than advertised. All this firsthand knowledge of catamaran systems and upgrades from full time cruisers is a tremendous help to folks like me who plan on retiring as a cruiser. It also lets me pre-plan what to change on my boat when I finally get one. You two are the best!
