I just bought a Studio Display yesterday. The first day I thought that it’s not that different to my 4K Dell monitor. Today I sat in front of the studio display and I have to say, that this thing is amazing. Just one cable even with my 16“ MacBook Pro M1 Max - yes it charges the MacBook. I would not buy it for private use cases, but for business it’s great and reduces taxes as well.

Great video Kyle. I'm enjoying your content and your overall quality of videos! I'm about a day into using my Studio Display with a Mac mini Pro, and I'm loving it so far. Almost went with something cheeper - so glad I didn't. Coming from a 5K iMac I knew that not having a 27" 5K would bother me, but mostly the thing that would drive me crazy would be the lack of brightness and volume control, and just the seamlessness of the Apple hardware working together as it should.

I bought a $15 5cm thick shelf from Ikea (Lack) to use as a stand and it now sits at the perfect height for me. Whilst I had little choice but to get the Studio Display's 5K to accomodate my work needs, I just couldn't bring myself to spring for the height adjustable stand! The color reproduction is excellent, connectivity perfect and the quality of text rendering on a retina panel makes a huge difference (upgraded from a Thunderbolt Display that I was very happy with).

What is the mic quality of the Apple Studio Display? Is it an acceptable mic for voice overs and video recording? I am interested in minimalist approach so I don't like to have more one cable (thunder bolt for powering up my mac pro folded in a stand - and that's it) in my next desk set up. Before I got with that approach I want to know if I should even go this route or not! I am envisioning, a set up with one screen (Apple Display Studio) wired to my mac pro, wireless keyboard and mouse (or trackpad).

    • @anthonyholland8549

The mic is certainly great for meetings - can't vouch for production quality. I saved the cost and hassle of an external keyboard by getting the VESA version and just having my laptop open directly below the monitor. That way I can use a mouse but also the laptop trackpad.

I just got one of these displays along with a 14” M3 Max MacBook Pro to replace my old 27” iMac. The Studio Display is awesome. And I have to say after using a 5k 27” iMac, you CANNOT go back to a 4k display. They all look blurry. The addition of the USB-C ports on the back is also great and cleaned up some cables from backup drives I have on my desk. I also had a 12 South shelf that I used on the back of my iMac to hold a couple of those drives and with a little ingenuity, it still works with the Studio Display. After using this for a week now, I’m not sure why everyone was complaining about this display when it came out. I can see having a better refresh rate would be good, but things like complaining about the cable don’t make sense to me. In my almost 40 years of using computers, I have never had a pet chew on a power cable or any become frayed. If your pet is chewing on a power cable, then you have bigger things to worry about than replacing the cable… like replacing your pet!

I could almost have written your comment myself - so well done. Grin. Around the time I began to plan my long delayed upgrade to my home Apple based computer ecosystem, I purchased my Studio Display in April of 2022. Also around that time, I surmised that a 27" new Apple Silicon based iMac would probably not be built until 2024 - long before any of us realized that Apple would NEVER build a 27" Apple Silicon based iMac. Having used 2010 27" iMac and an external secondary 24" display monitor, I came to appreciate the necessity of having a desktop system with as much display area as possible. But, since 2018, I had been using a 13" MacBook Air and that iPad Pro as my primary computer system.
Fast forward to about a month ago, , on November 7th, Apple delivered my new apace black 14" M3 Pro MBP w/36 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD storage. I now have, on my completed upgraded desktop system consisting of a 12.9" iPad Pro (2018), that Studio Display and now my MBP providing me - if needed - 3 displays to facilitate my desktop computer based tasks. I couldn't be more pleased with my completed ecosystem upgrade.- especially that 5K Studio Display aiding these 70 year old eyes of mine.

I’m not sure what much of it you say is about, but I do thank you for mentioning your experience and conclusion w/re to 5k>4k. Ive been auditioning 4k monitors for my MBP M1 and everything comes up a dud. Not really enough brightness, uneven color dispersion, and with that 14” Retina display always in my peripheral vision , everything 4k looks dull, less than distinc and with a noticeable lack of vibrance. Finally, the retina loses patience and kicks my ass to pack up that f’n 4k thang Immeduteky and take it UPS. This has became me a loop by now, despite known, celebrity youtube techsperts having touted the superiority of the boxed thing I’m now driving to ups. As a longtime Apple user, naturally I fear and Hate Apple. The most hideous thought for me to sustain is the possibility of purchasing an ASD. So, if I might ask your opinion, is a dull lack of vibrance a 4k signature? If 5k is the only choice I know I’d try something like LG first. Thanks I appreciate your reading this.

    • @Ed_Mann
      @Ed_Mann 6 місяців тому +2

@@timz9862 my comment is intended to be a combination of humor and truth. I’ve been using apple and windows for decades. I fear and hate Apple because it seems like since the G5, every Apple device I purchase (for 3x what it’s really worth) eventually punches me in the gut with stupid basic stuff they’ve chosen to not include, or not refine. And yet for one very important thing I do, only Apple devices do the job, and that because of is Apple’s sync function. As a writer it’s so great to have every letter I type immediately present on iPad, iPhone and MacBook Pro. Windows won’t do that, that I’m aware of.
Butbecause Apple is Cult that (a) kicks their customers in the nuts as an M.O. (b) overcharges their customers because they can (c) is a gaggle of billionaires that engage in massive abuse of human rights at foxxconn their manufacturing facility, and leverages the shit out of their largely hypnotized followers, many of whom use Apple just to sustain an imaginary identity of superiority on social media, I hate and fear Apple. They’re psychopaths who’ve figured out how to abuse both their manufacturing workers and their customers in order to become multi billionaires. To me that is reprehensible.
All that said, I’m primarily a music producer, and for that, since 2006 I’ve used ASUS laptops, which always have 2-3 of every port currently used to transmit and receive every current data type. Since 2016 it’s been ASUS Zenbooks. Every windows machine I’ve owned runs circles around every Macbook I’ve owned since OS9. I understood that when APPLE switched to the Intel chip, the OS would be structured like Windows, but coded and engineered from ppl who have no experience with windows. I used my G4 desktop until 2010 when it simply could not be supported anymore, that was OS9 and it was great. I purchased one apple OSX MacBook, and what a turd that was, eventually developing a disease where every command required that I enter a unique password, insane. APPLE just shrugged their shoulders and told me they could not fix it nor could the osx MacBook I owned be upgraded but yay! I should just buy their latest osx MacBook. I did not do that, instead using only ASUS laptops runnng XP, WIN7, and I never had any of the rumored windows problems. Win7 was like an upgraded OS9. I’ve never experienced a single crash in Windows, or “the blue screen of death” ever, not once. I used these machines on months long world wide tours, to compose, mix and master albums and for years if intense sound design work when was contracting for companies in Silicon Valley. Never one operational problem, AND I was able to avoid the APPLE “we’ve decided that you no longer need any ports” kick in the nuts stunt. My current ASUS machines have 2 usb A, B, 3 Thunderbolt 4/ usb C ports, HDMI 2.1, and VGA ports. Q: why tf would APPLE put hdmi 2.0 in their M1 Pro? A: to fuck with you. “Oh, you can have hdmi 2.0, which was developed in 2014, but for that you’ll have to buy the M2.” What a bunch of pirates).
Currently I have iphonexr (very good), iPads air 4 (very good) and air 5 (wonky, it crashes, the screen goes dim then flashes bright, trying to type anywhere is a mess of inserted word fragments from other documents, addresses from 15 years ago, email addresses I haven’t used in over a decade, and trying to type in notes always maxes out something in the iPad. Notes will freeze, but if I wait 5-10 minutes then it’s clear and I can resume typing. Trying to edit when typing in Notes on iPad Air 5 isn’t possible. Cannot place the cursor where I need it and if I think I have, I lose the paragraph of a portion of the paragraph. Again iPad Air 4: none if these problems. Trying to type in Notes on the Air 5 is nothing but a retrograde time wasting battle in futility. If I intend to type “someone”, at “some..” the air 5 will auto complete the word for me as “something”. No that’s not what i wanted to type Apple, so I’m constantly having to retype the word I want not just twice, but 3x. at which point Notes will usually accept my version. Then there’s trying to type a word like “trying.” That usually comes out as “try ngtr y”. Then there auto correct, which substitutes a word with a wrong letter with a misspelling so severe that iOS can’t even recognize it. “Strengthrn”. Oh, you must mean “Qsdtringith”. Really? But it gets worse. I just typed “mean”, but iOS 17.x on Air 5 corrected “mean” to “meam”. Fuck! No, I wrote it correctly the first time Apple. You soulfuckers. So now I’m wrestling with the iPad by typing ‘mean” again, 3X at which point Apple gives up and accepts the correct spelling. BTW every correctly spelled word I type has the “mispelling” underline. For a while I took that seriously, until I realized that it’s just another kick in tne balls from Apple.
Of course typing on an air 5 is not easy to do given the air 5’s resistance to positioning the cursor or selecting words. Out of 10 tries, I can expect 3 successes. Again APPLE tells me these things aren’t really happening I must be doing something wrong., The air 5 doesn’t like iOS 17.x but the air 4 has no problems with iOS 17.x. ??? You tell me. I’ve been doing typing and writing on iPads since 2016 and until the air 5, never had a problem. All of this is to say that I see an obvious degradation in Apple products. My MacBook Pro M1 is ok, I guess. Not really but Jesus I paid so much for it that I’ll insist “it’s ok.” The MBP M1 is my first experience with macOS, which I think is bloated, innefficient and damn! macOS crashes continually.
My last reason for fearing, hating but using APPLE product is that APPLE is simply too cool to supply customers with user guides. My God! If they did that, they’d seem vulnerable, because anyway, they know that hundreds of cult followers will pay to create and sustain websites so THEY can tell Apple customers how to use their new devices or the new os, just to be associated with the Cult of Apple. If anyone wants to know how to run their Apple device or latest os, it’s simple: type what you seek to learn into any search engine and then start clicking links private websites that portend to know the answer. OR - the hapless user could ask the apple support forum! Sure! That works great. No it doesn’t. Never go to the Apple support forum. It’s useless. Just type “where is Brightness control located in macOS Sonoma?” Into any search engine and click links. Someone somewhere will know how to locate it.
Yes it’s just that stupid. And I wush I weren’t dependent on Apple, but I am. The iPad is far superior to a Samsung galaxy tablet. iPhone under iOS is so far is superior the Samsung running Android. Anything Android is terrible. Tne MacBook Pro I try to avoid. It’s clunky, the OS is so far beyond bloated that I’m now convinced the only reason Apple gets away with macOS is because Apple users have never tried windows, and they believe that the problems that plagued pre-XP Windows remain. A good, non manufacturer created stripped down copy of Windows anything runs sleek and smooth. With Apple, users don’t have that option.
I hope this answers your question, and thanks for responding.

@@timz9862 as an addendum: I love that there is no “cult of Microsoft/ASUS/MSI/Dell…” etc. You’ll never see an “ohh ahh look at those curves” unboxing post on Reddit about any of those brands. But a new MacBook Air? The cult springs to life, celebrating this new thing from Cult HQ. because it’s light and thin! Of course there are even more posts by MacBook users complaining that because their cat walked over their MacBook Air or Ori, or because they carried it in their laptop backpack, the screen is now cracked. In other words, never do the thing that’s the reason you paid through the nose to own a MacBook for to begin with. It’s best to put that gorgeous thin light shiny cult trinket on a stand on a desk and then never move it. And don’t close the lid unless you’ve retained and insert that special sheet of tissue paper the MacBook shipped with.
Because the 2nd most complained about thing about the Apple designed MacBook is that there’s no clearance between the keyboard and screen. Endless posts complaining about the keyboard becoming imprinted on, or cracking the screen. But Apple shipped it with that highly specialized acid free non chemical micro-thin sheet of paper between the keyboard and screen, in order to prevent those problems. So users spend hours asking Apple, and web searching to learn what this magic tissue might be, and where they can get a stack of it. Nothing. Apples response is “acid free, non chemical, and thinner than a sheet of printing paper.” WTF. They have the tissue, someone has bought the device that requires the tissue, but sorry, Apple cannot make it available or even tell their users what it is. Now tell me that is not purposeful sideways jab, designed to create lots of business relacing cracked screens, or for the more intelligent user, guaranteeing the purchase of Apple Care +, good for 3 years, after which you’ll have to pay APPLE anyway, whatever it is they charge $350?, To replace a $3 piece of glass in a device that is designed to crack that same glass. Tell me this isn’t a cynical racket. That’s a rhetorical request, it’s a racket.

Hi there Kyle. I don't know if you recall but that's exactly what I was saying a few months ago in the comment section in one of your previous videos. There's just nothing like an ASD on the market. And it sits on many more desks that people have been led to believe. I'm a casual user who works with text and find the nano-texture version super soft and easy on my eyes. Sharpness is there and I don't agree with others that find the nano-texture option grainy and fuzzy. There are a few bad thing concerning the ASD though. I've had issues with coil whine and buzzing sound coming from the back of the display and am waiting for a replacement unit. All in all I don't regrer my decision one bit. However, top notch video as always and keep up the good work. Wish you all the best.

I used to do several Zoom meeting each week when using a 4k 21.5-in iMac and found a second display to be really handy, so I bough the smallest 4k display I could afford, a 28-inch plastic ACER - I'd have preferred 24-n but none were available.
In time I switch to using an M1 Mac mini and used that display for seven months as a single display. It was unsatisfactory, I had to use an external webcam, speakers and a microphone plus a Thunderbolt dock to connect my various external storage drives. In July of 2023 I spent part of an inheritance on a Studio display and was able to ditch the speakers, Thunderbolt dock and microphone because of the quality of the same things on the Display, plus it was a proper 5k display rather than an awkward menu-driven 4k that never scaled for macOS properly.
I dislike the built-in webcam with a passion bordering on hate and now use an excellent Insta360 Link 4k webcam. Not cheap, but very effective.
I already used a VESA mount arm for the 4k ACER, so I chose the VESA mount for the Studio Display.

Man, I just purchased one with the title and height. I was fighting myself before not to buy one because I also felt there are better ones out the for cheap right? I tried some and the last one I tried was the Dough Spectrum One Glossy 27in and while that display is nice. The only benefit I got from that monitor was refresh rate. It just lacked fidelity in clarity and brightness and also the seamless integration across apple devices. For example, I didn't even know your AirPods can automatically switch back and forth between your phone and Mac when you play content or any audio. Before on other monitors I would have to always manually switch back to Mac. Apple knows how to attract you with the easy and comfort their product provides and while it can cost you a lot for the most part it is worth it. They could be better but I guess we all have to keep refilling our tank of Copium till they make another display for us to spend money on again.

The four ports at back power my MBAir and connect my SSD Time Machine. That’s all I need. I did get a refurbished price on it. I plan to use it for a long time so cost is not a big issue. I had the Cinema Screen (1440) before it for 12 years and it was great too.

All of the critiques in this video are 100% accurate but it is more than the sum of its parts and I absolutely love it. Maybe when we are able to get more bandwidth out of thunderbolt 4 Apple will release a display with full array local dimming, high refresh rate and VRR. Until then, the studio display is a very enjoyable option if you can stomach the price.

I never click on random videos on my youtube homescreen from creators to whom I do not subscribe or with whom I am otherwise unfamiliar. But I haven't seen a Studio Display video in a bit, and I am caught up on my regular tech channels, so I thought why not check this out. This is the first video i've watched from this channel. Annnd, wow, what an amazing job all around; the entire production quality is minimum a B+, and considering the smallish size of this channel, that's a pretty huge compliment (grades of A and above are reserved for the giants; Linus, MKBHD, Arun, etc.). And now that I've seen all these other videos you've published, which are on topics I know and love, and are new to me, I feel like i've found kind of a hidden gem. Great video Kyle. So happy you made that video, because I am thinking of moving away from my 27" iMac and wanted to retain a 5K resolution and price wise in Canada there's not much difference between the studio display and other 5K. As you said 4K is where the savings can be had, but was not happy with the customer reviews on many including on the better known brands. The one reason why I probably won't buy a studio display is because I want to hook the work laptop to the same display and enjoy more screen that's the one negative for me of the studio display only one computer at a time. Otherwise, if it was just for my own use I would get a studio display with a Mac mini. You hit all the points: all in one, convenience and it just works with less clutter on the desk. It would save me the cost of a hub as the display would have all I need in terms of ports. Still going to get a Mac mini sometime next year and probably want to try the LG ultra wide 5K display. I'd like to experience not having to move windows around and just work.

I have studio display hooked up to my mac mini M2 Pro - was my upgrade from a 27" iMac and I got tired of waiting whether Apple were going to bring out a replacement for the 27" iMac - the rumours seemed to say that the bigger iMac was never going to be released. To save a bit of cash, I went for 512GB on the mac mini and added 4TB in an external Acasis enclosure with Samsung 980 PRO SSD, which via TB4 seems to run just as fast as the internal SSD. I seem to be the only one who doesn't like the sound from the studio display though, so have some small logitech desktop speakers and sub under the desk which is a marked improvement! @Kyle Erickson, if you're looking for a new home for your Fluance Ai41's, look no further - I'd gladly take them off you! 😃

As i was using iMac 27 for nearly 10 years and switched to the apple studio M1 Max i was searching a long long time for an alternative to the studio display, because i do not wanted to get rid of my iMac display. long story short... i bought the studio display in around the same time i bought the LG. and i am honest when i say, that there was absolutely no WOW effect for me. it felt like i am still using my iMac and i do work as a professional grafic and motion designer. so i am in a need of a good color calibration. apple studio display has a very good calibration out of the box. would i buy the studi display again? NO. and why? i cannot even tell why not. I agree, and given the lack of a real stand and no vesa mount (typical Apple) I see the studio display as more expensive than it looks. In credible to think for that amount of money you have to stack books to get it only apprxinstely close to the right height, and just to protect the absurd investment, the display can’t be sitting on top of too many books. No swivel, no angling and most typical of Apple, no possibility of mountng it to a real stand for height, pivot and single. For a company that taught itself for design, that’s pathetic, and in purpose, every day on Apple a new form of tacit “fuck you” is discveredl.

For me, the Studio Display is the best Monitor for a Mac. First, 5K Resolution on 27" is the major Pro. All the 4K Monitors have just half the Amount of Pixels (14.7 MP instead of just 8.3 MP, because 4K is just 3.8K and 5K is 5.1K, which is just the Resolution horizontally) and every Mac has to scale up all the Time, from 2,5K to 4K (MacOS GUI has no 4K Option), which is much worse for the Picture and for the constant GPU load needed. And any other 5K Monitor available (LG Ultrafine and Samsung S9) are Plastic and wobbling on the Desk. The Studio Display made of Aluminium and Glas (instead of Plastic on the Front and on the Back) is so sophisticated and high Quality, that all of the Alternatives seem to be overpriced and not really comparable. And yes, if you compare the SD with all the other Monitors out there, it is definitely worth the Price. You have to count everything together and then, it does make Sense.

Kyle, I spent a considerable amount of time watching numerous videos and reading reviews about the Studio Display. Surprisingly, most opinions were negative, suggesting that it wasn't worth the money. This created a dilemma for me, as it made my decision-making process quite challenging. Despite the criticisms, I couldn't identify any compelling alternatives in the market.
After much contemplation, I decided to take a risk and purchased the Studio Display two months ago. Opting for the VESA option was a deliberate choice since I didn't want a monitor riser. Given that color/image quality and text sharpness are crucial for me, especially as I spend extended periods writing and reviewing code each day.
I'm pleased that the Studio Display has met my needs in terms of performance. However, the drawbacks include the absence of a dedicated on/off button and a non-removable power cable. But it is not a big deal for me.

Apple computers do not work well with a typical 4K display. Apple ideally combines four pixels from an available set of 5120x2880 pixels (5K) into a single effective pixel to be displayed which would result in an effective resolution of 2560x1440 which is how the 5K Studio Display or 27 inch iMac is configured by default. The native resolution of the 5K monitor is being used in this case. 2560x1440 is considered to be 2K. There is no scaling in this configuration when displayed on the 5K Studio display. However, with a 27 inch 4K (3840x2160) monitor, the video output is scaled to achieve proper sizing of windows, fonts, etc. which results in a less than sharp image. This is because the effective pixel to be displayed is not an integer multiple of the 5120x2880 set of pixels. The 4K display would not be driven at native resolution in this case. One can set the output of the Mac to display at 4K and thus display at native resolution but everything on the screen will appear too small. On the other hand, one could set the Mac output at 1920 x 1080 to display at the native resolution of the monitor but the fonts and windows will appear too large on a 27 inch monitor. However, fonts and windows do not appear too large on a 24 inch 4K monitor when operating at 1920x1080. This is how I have my 24 inch LG Ultrafine monitor set up which serves as a second monitor.

It's overpriced no matter how you slice it. We are talking about $1,600 starting price for very ancient 27" non-HDR LED 60Hz tech that mostly a 10 year old design with some slight improvements. SnazzyLabs perfectly explained why 5 mins into his " iMac is Dead" video a few weeks ago. Simply put, just because there are no alternatives doesn't make it a good deal. There are no alternatives simply because there is no demand for 5k monitors because 5k caters to MacOS which is a tiny portion of the market especially in desktop form. Low demand = no competition = high prices
Apple's own marketing constantly shows this monitor in workflows that have 2-3 monitors. Who the heck is spending close to 5 grand to have three 27" monitors non HDR 60Hz LED(outside of reference grade displays which these are not).
Don't get e wrong.....this montior is good no doubt. It's just priced way too high and they made it so that if you need more that 1 you are literally paying for duplicate things that you don't need. If you buy three of these you just bought 3 sets of speakers, 3 sets of webcams.....etc.

To me, the Studio Display is absolutely perfect (except for the webcam). It makes other displays look overpriced. I’m a software engineer, so I don’t care about refresh rate, and take a higher resolution panel every day of the week.

@@ThomasVanhelden Personally I would not want to be stuck with a single 27" monitor no matter what resolution. The screen real-estate is tiny which is the big issue with the Studio Display because Apple's own marketing shows in being used often in a 2-3 monitor configurations and then you are basically paying for redundant things marked up like webcam, speakers, 64gb internal storage, A13 Bionic chip. Basically 3 Studio Displays would run close to 5 grand at the minimum or 6 grand for height adjustable which is insanity. I can get a 49" QD-OLED HDR 240Hz ultrawide for cheaper than a single Studio Display(which I would get over one easily and I say this as someone who currently owns a 5k iMac and is well aware of the high PPI those Apple displays).

@@vlcthefish If you're used to MacOS' features and trackpad gestures for switching between fullscreen apps and desktops, screen real estate is overrated. For my workflow, it's even counter-productive. I have two $1500 ultrawides at my desk at work, and I hate it. I often just work on my 16" MBP display and leave the ultrawides unplugged.
I guess to each his own. I prefer panel quality and sharpness over screen real estate or refresh rate. You prefer it the other way around, and that's perfectly fine. However, that doesn't mean the Studio Display is overpriced. As I said, I'm a software engineer, and I stare at text (i.e. code) on my screen for 10-12 hours a day. I want that text to look as sharp and pretty as possible.

Apple would not waste their time making a product that has low demand. They only make products that contribute to their profit margins. The price is fair. Is it an uncomfortable reality? Yes. The fact remains, the competition can’t come up with an equivalent alternative at a cheaper price, that would add to their profit margins.

@@ThomasVanhelden using your logic that 'real estate is overrated' and trackpad gestures replace the need for that.... then why wouldn't you just work on your Macbook Pro over using a Studio Display at all since the Macbook Pro has a vastly superior display over the Studio 🤣

wow are you ever wrong on this bro, absolutely embarrassing for you - 48" is actually for pros and 43" is for semi-pros working their way up the ranks to achieve their ultimate goal of monitor dominance. 32" is for new born babies who want a fresh crisp look and 27" is men who just want to get things done in a nice cozy setting and let their problems melt away basking in it's blue light radiance.

How much is Apple paying you? 1600$ .....for an LCD panel in 2023? what a joke...That's why Apple is going for the third trillion...cause simply are the best in marketing and bullshit and because most people don't know what they are buying, they are based on the looks. Ohh sorry, I forgot those amazing speakers....yeah they do an amazing job replacing bookshelf speakers....what a joke....I have a better suggestion for you. Get an QD OLED 65 inch tv, on sale for around 2000$ and use it as a monitor. That is value for money and the very best display in the world, years ahead of this stupid LCD display....its real price is 500$, not a cent more. Tell that Apple, it doesn't cost them more than 150$ to make it in China anyway... good luck

Hi Kyle. I notice in this video that you are using the Studio Display but didn't see the Mac Studio computer on your desk any longer. May I ask why you are no longer using it? I was considering buying both the Display and the Studio computer as well. I'd like to know if there is a reason I should be avoiding this.
