The Art Of Making Mistakes - Countless Fixes For My 1963 Plymouth Valiant Slant Six (And It Breaks)

- I just wanted to go for a test drive, is that so much to ask? This is the car I've chosen for my turbo slant six project, a 1963 Plymouth Valiant Signet 200 (whatever that means) that I got up and running with MSD Atomic EFI in a previous video. It doesn't have a turbo yet, but that's another story. My plan for this episode was to get the wheels and tires swapped, tune the EFI system, make some various improvements in the engine compartment, and finally take the car for a real test drive. Naturally, the universe had other ideas.
You and Chris Birdsong are my favorite Mopar channels.
As I can no longer drive, (due to injuries and strokes) I specifically watch you work, to relax. And the memories.
I love your “editing yourself” clips, your voice is always very serious and it’s like someone else correcting you 🤣
I’m usually editing at my kitchen table at 7 AM and at that time I am almost certainly a different person 😅
This is even better than i thought, the 170 is even more uncommon so this will be sweet!
Or the 198.
I've owned a couple of slant 6 Mopars - been waiting impatiently for this next video on the project. Thanks.
I've just stumbled across this channel today....loving it. Hello from Australia ✌️
Thank you!
I don't care what anybody says. Your humor makes these videos fun to watch. Almost Monty Python-ish. They also look like a parody of me working on stuff. Always a cluster. Lol
I love Monty Python! And that’s essentially what I’m going for - showing how much of a cluster frick this often is. So thanks!
Like salty snacks, Jamie's videos have become habit forming. These pretzels are making me thirsty!
LOL😄
Looks awesome with those wheels!👍
Looks absolutely mint now Jamie.... cant wait for turbo noises but theres always hurdles along the way...good thing you have a yard and shed full of "spares"
Just got my copy of mope collectors guide; congratulations to you! You look great and you did Dales Demon all the respect it deserves. Keep it up!!
Outstanding! Thank you!
It is Magnificent! I can’t wait to see more! I can see a fuel tank flush in your future.
That, or I just replace the dang thing…
That will work as well!
I was thinking (dangerous) I don’t remember seeing you hook up a fuel return line for the EFI.
Coming along nicely and runs awesome aside from the fuel issue. Wheels totally changed the look and stance !
I really enjoy your Project Car Video's Jamie. Keep them coming.
This is so much better than 'Reality TV" because when shit happens, it happens and doesn't get edited out. And I can really relate to working on one problem and ending up down a hundred rabbit holes of more and more problems. But, carry on thy wayward son and there will be a running driving turbo Valiant when you are done. I heard it in a love song or something, so it can't be wrong. Just a little Kansas and Marshall Tucker wisdom.
That was good. Some of my old favorites there.👍
Bat man made his appearance!! Also that car is mag-nificent and you making that pun lives permanently in my head cannon😂
Shit, I didn’t even do it on purpose 🤣
Despite the countless setbacks, it was a “valiant” effort 😂
You can see yourself out
😂
“I’ll be here all week. Don’t forget to tip your waitress” ta-dum, tiss🥁
One of the great things about old Chryslers is when they aren't running (properly or at all) you can look at them and say to yourself "yeh but it's a cool looking car". .....Thats a cool looking car.
Oh trust me, I walked out there and did that just today.
@@DeadDodgeGarage and it's with pride we say " yes, it's a heap of shit. But it's my heap of shit !"
Turbocharged 170cu Slant Six?
You’re the only man in the world who would do that. 😸
I’m not! It’s been done! I think…
from the web-
170
-The only engine that is oversquare
-Rod ratio is better than the 225 but not as good as the 198- Rod Ratio: 1.814
-Lowest peak HP and torque but known for being able to rev much higher than a 225, which changes up the low peak HP numbers. But still not tons of torque
-Tied for highest RPM at peak HP (a slant at 4400RPM probably sounds awesome!)
-Though it is smallest it is still quite sizable by todays standards
198
-Only engine that is "square"-ish
-Best rod ratio- Rod ratio: 1.924
-Widest RPM gap between peak torque and peak HP
-Lowest peak torque (possibly best highway economy?)
225
-Undersquare
-Worst rod ratio- Rod ratio 1.624
-Tons of low-end torque but doesn't like to turn nearly as high as the 170
-With all that stroke and less-than-great rod ratio the rings get a good work out.
-Seems to be most popular and readily available engine.
-Also seems to be most sought after for performance.
@@HelpingHand-ic4wtI think the 170 could benefit from a 5 or 6 speed and shorter final drive. I'd bet they love boost.

The masking tape on the air cleaner is awesome.
I like it. Haha. Eventually it will have a carb hat, but for now…
The Valiant would look great with a coat of satin white Rusto. Its a super easy color and sheen to make it look good. Plus a rougher sheen is really easy to sand back down. I know he said he doesn't really want to go down that road but it would be a huge improvement.
Mike painted his ‘64 Dart in satin white. I don’t like the look. I like the patina flavor, and I’m going to leave it alone.
Alright you've convinced me! I'm gonna track down another slant to turbo to put in my chrysler valiant!
Outstanding!
What a roller coaster ride of emotions!! Can other abusive relationship we all have with our beloved and hated project cars
I dig it, and Im a carb guy 100% of the time. Can you play around w/ injector sizes? Turbo slant six, with stick trans in there, sounds like fun! Keep goin'. Love, Dubs
Keep on keeping on
From Dave Wren’s collection…cool! One of my favorite racers from the great northwest…. Wouldn’t surprise me if he had a Hemi planned to go in this. 🤔
Them Centerlines are dope 💪
I could watch Mopar video's all day brother keep it up
Another great vid, I watch them all.
I'm trying to catch up watching. I've been busy trying to clean up my place after the hurricane and other projects. Living on the Texas coast has its challenges. TIG welding with 309 wire is my "go-to" for exhaust manifolds.
Oh dang. Yeah I’ve heard it was a mess down there… videos will still be here when you get stuff in order.
As normal nice informative video, our little 1974 mini has one of those silly little cylinder head bypass hose pain in the to change it. Glad your not sticking a V8 in it.Regards from sunny England
fun for me show. thank you.
Now I’m not saying you should change the channel’s name or anything, but Valiant Garage has a ring to it. 😊
Great stuff as always.
Hey brother hood it's a cool old Val those wheels really set it off the hard work is worth it thats the joy of doing cool things on a old car anyway I get a good laugh watching others struggle its entertaining and also a learning curve thanks Jamie another great video
I just got a care package from Summit with an AVS2, mopar bracket and calibration kit. I just need the rain to stop...
Thank you Jamie
Monty Python, Red Green, Nailed it!!!
Some of my favorites!
Gonna be sooo good 👍🏻
Watching you DDG makes me wish I hadn't quit drinking, smoking pot, and selling my 87 D100, but not necessarily in that order.
😅
I quit drinking years ago but I plan on smoking pot and fixing vehicles right up till noon on the day of my funeral! 🤣
@minnesotatomcat yeah I was a government contractor on military bases, so I had to change one color green for another color green $$. Once I got on base dealing with the government and seeing the people spending our money, I kinda wish things were still fuzzy, if you know what I mean.
@@michaelatkins9780 you don’t approve of all the $500 govt shovels they buy? 🤣
I adjust slant 6 valves at 12 intake and 22 exhaust. When warm, it will go to 10-20. If for some reason you did 10-20 cold, when it warms you'll get a slight miss at idle.
"If for some reason" - that reason is the factory spec.
After watching this video I finally went and got a remanufactured Edelbrock carb to replace my junky Holley. Makes a big difference from feathering the gas to get it to go to hitting the gas without it cutting out.
They work really well!
You're well on your way to where you're going to wind up!
People who say they're stressed out watching you work may be folks that just don't work, at all. Car EDD is a real thing, not to be confused with ED, also a real thing. 😊
Neat
It would be interesting to see what fuel economy is like ..??.. looking forward seeing more content and thanks..🔧🔧👍
I think so too! Thanks!
Took a running car and turned it into a non-runner. That sounds so incredibly familiar. Are you sure I didn't work on that?
😅
Love this car, my first car was a blue one , 3 on the tree
Watching me work stresses me out!
I see you have the Holley system installed. But this just looks so interesting. Yup, port fuel injection. Not mine. Whoops! Thank you for the correction.
And the link I posted is gone. No matter. It led to a slant 6 build that had injectors mounted in the head. It was interesting.
MSD Atomic, although they are now owned by Holley, so… something like that. The theory is that this will work better under boost than a carburetor. Currently I am still trying to get it to actually work naturally aspirated… but that’s mostly my fault.
Vice Grip Garage clear coat, or any clear coat would be cool.
This is way a more interesting turbo slant build than the Stay Tuned truck build.
That’s what I thought!
NGK V-Power plugs are the only ones I've used in my Mopars for years.
Really like the idea of the 170. It seems fitting to take the least likely and make it awesome....And there are a bazillion 225's around. Was the 225 reference from your old truck a harbinger? Time will tell, I guess. Waiting, but not with abated breath.
Yes, that’s what we’ll call plan B. Haha.
I love going through you comments and replying to the negative Nancy’s……I get so many hilarious comments taken down 🤣 people shouldn’t bring the smoke if they can’t handle the fire
Thank you for your service!
It's my opinion that on my 65 Valiant, only the Super 6 intake and exhaust manifolds are from a later model slant 6, and were bolted on to my car's original block, for a couple reasons: on the intake manifold, several areas of blue paint could be seen under the red paint that was there when I bought it. Late 70's and on slant sixes were painted blue, yet the intake was the only place I could see it. Any other areas of the block that still had paint were orange. Per Ed at Wildcat Mopars, the 65 Valiant engines were orange. I took the valve cover down to bare metal before repainting, no blue paint to be seen. Also, my engine's head has spark plug drool tubes, which, as you state in this video, the later heads did not have. This opinion of mine could be wrong, tho... I do want to get an EGR delete plate, the ugly EGR valve is still there, but does nothing as all the vacuum ports are blocked off.
No you’re probably right. My memory sucks.
I believe this may be the only channel that I'd watch even if the subject matter of a particular episode
didn't interest me much....
Not that I'm saying anything of the sort for *this* specific episode, mind you. 🙂
- Ed on the Ridge
I also had a white '63 Valiant Signet 2 door hardtop but with it being a Canadian car, the body was Dodge Dart from the firewall on back.
Yep! They did that for several years.
Those aftermarket frame mounted EFI pumps all seem to be noisy, even if you isolate them. There is a channel with a guy in Florida who did an EFI 69 valiant build with turbo charged 360, and the pump was the same. You probably will have to go with an in tank pump to quiet it down. Of course a tank not filled with rust is also a big help… 😁
The noise doesn’t bother me too much - except when it screams like a dying bison because it’s starving for fuel…
I love what and where ya going with this build man awsome
All those wheel/tire issues, well, maybe it's time for a 1963 TURBO SIGNET GASSER!!!!!!!!!! ;)
Don’t tempt me…
@@DeadDodgeGarage I don't think I've ever seen one before!! Honestly, I think that would be very cool!!!
the hairpin front fenders need to be high like that, it's a good look

CENTERLINES, I love it
FiTech has what you need for the fuel tank set up. Use any tank you desire with FiTech insides, etc.... OR go to Tanks Inc., they have the EFI tank for your car. How about putting some shine-juice on that patina? Easy to apply and quick....And Raise the back 4 inches....
Oh shit, you’re right! I had only found their late A tank before. This is perfect, thanks.
Dorman has a nice lug stud catalog.
Indeed. I’ve got boxes of them around. In fact, didn’t I show a couple boxes of Dorman studs in this video? I have every option of late A front stud in stock.
Yeee Yeee
🤘🏼⛽️🍻
Looks stunning on them centrelines - PS please wind the windows up on the Studebaker ,unless it never rains in Washington , Had the window busted out on my car today - its soggy now , not ideal for the lovely Studebaker
It has been very nice here, and I thought letting that unit breathe was a good idea.
@@DeadDodgeGarage That's good. Glad your not leaving out in all weathers like that. Do so love them centrelines on that car. The whole terbo consept is brill
Yes! The short stroke SHOULD be able to rev higher, as in a F1 car at 15,000 or whatever crazy RPM. If not mistaken that's around 2 or 2 1/2" stroke? I know the 170 can't do THAT but interested to see where you end up, without blowing out the pan! Or if....
Precisely! I’m very interested to see where it will go.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Me too! I worry that a turbo will shove in too much pressure along with possible VALVE FLOAT at high RPM with the factory springs, etc. On and on. Good luck, I'll be watching....
It's Magnificent
Car computer equals unimaginable problems that can happen, I'll stay old school. :)
You and me both, sister - for literally every other build. How would you turbo a carb’d slant six? Boost reference a BBD?
that would make those plugs 50 years old yesterday. Aug 8, 1974.
Woah. That’s odd timing.
What can I do to obtain such levels of bearded greatness?
I wish I knew 😅
And remember a grinder can make you into great welder!
You’re damn right!
That would look cool if you sold those bumpers to me.
Booooooo, also the back one is pretty well bent
Hmmmm....my buddy that lives in Centralia has a 3D printer, I'll make a call. Oh, I also commend you for the lack of on camera swearing during the episode, you are a stronger man than I.
OMG🫢 a 170 with 15lbs boost = 340cid🎉what a coincidence!
😮🤯
In the late 70s I saw a 1971 383 challenger with an aluminum intake and the carb set on an angle like that one, never seen another since then except on a BBC? Also check the rubber fuel line from the tank that goes to the metal line for hairline cracks from dry rot, that will suck air and run out of gas one day and the next day or so work ok, I had that happen once.
Yep - but it’s brand new. The whole fuel line is.
Question and comment:
What sizes are those new wheels and tires? they look awesome. I need to upgrade from my 13" pizza cutter tires.
When I first got my 65 Valiant, its starter sounded like a normal old-school starter, for about 3 weeks. Then it started making the same identical clunky-crunchy sounds that yours makes. 2 days later it died completely. Replaced it with a Dakota starter, and all is right with the universe. I'm sure you (or Tom) have spare starters around...
They are 15” wheels, which will be hard to find. I know the rears are 245 wide, but beyond that I don’t remember. I think the fronts are 215s. I’m seriously kinda tired size stupid. But you should know that these barely fit, and the rear passenger still rubs.
I kinda like the look of those honeycomb wheels on it, more of a sleeper look that you don't get with centerlines. Also the honeycomb wheels would look good with rich Corinthian leather.....
I agree. I trimmed a lot of fat out of this video, and one of the clips that was cut involved explaining that I do think they’re a good fit for the car. But… Centerlines. It definitely looks less subdued and more racey now.
interior, not wheels...
Treat the 170 the same as a 225, as far as cam, valves and timing. What you need to watch is the fuel flow. You can get, if built right 8k rpms in a 170.
That’s the goal!
I have two '65 Signets - one a 225 and the other a 273
21:59 Holy hell that looks exactly like the old dakota I used to have. Same year, same paint. By far the most miles of anything I ever drove, 350k miles
Also, 26:50 545rfe?
No that’s the 46RE or whatever the heck they used in 5.9 Durangos. 545 was 4.7 only in those.
My daily driver is a 1965 Chrysler Valiant AP6 made in Australia like myself I can’t believe that two door has the same front end almost as my 4 door. I love my car and I hate new cars I don’t want my car to beep and be able to record me. I love my valiant
Nice! Yes, they are very similar. Over here, the 2 and 4 doors used exactly the same nose. The Australian Valiant grilles are special. The ‘64-66 setup looks pretty similar to the US version, but for ‘63 the Australian grille is unique. You didn’t get this funky frowny face thing. It has really grown on me.
@@DeadDodgeGarage yeh the AP5 has a long grill which is the only difference pretty much besides inside to my 65 AP6 which has the two little grills with the break in the middle which I love. I have jellybean mags or some call them kidney mags. They look great my spare tyre is exactly the same as your tyres and we do call them honeycomb
I just finished doing a Por 15 fuel tank treatment on my 1970 Datsun and am curious if the valiant also has nothing available in replacement tanks and that's the best option for you. I'll stay tuned.
I was wrong - there actually are EFI tanks available for them. I didn't see them with a cursory internet search, but multiple people have sent me links. So that's definitely in my plan when funds allow.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Nice. My favorite thing about keeping my w200 going is the fact that parts are actually available. My Datsun newer Nissan Pontiac Chevy home built and universal parts combination that my Datsun became is hard to keep straight in my head. Also requires back up vehicle for down time.
The 170 revs easy and unlike the 225 its crank shaft isn't setting in the engine oil so windage isn't as much of a issue so 170 all the way.
A Fitch in the Northwest? I'd put money on it that we're related. Chunk of my family from Iowa took off on the Oregon trail back in the the day. Fitch is an Ellis Island name changed up by the guy who couldn't understand my relative's thick German accent
Please do a video of your kitchen garden progress.
That’s not my department around here.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I meant with all your spare time!!!
170 is good! Although I can't say exactly why? :-)
My '63 has the same thing!
Oh hell yeah Tony would 😂
Hi Jamie
My name is boris from New Zealand, I have a 69 valiant with a slant six auto with 2 barrel Webber carb, electric dizzy and pacemaker headers, it’s for the kids and I street car, just wondering what cam and valves to put in her when I freshen up the motor! Still running strong 74,000 miles on the clock!
You guys have any local cam grinders down in those parts? That’s who I would be talking to for cam specs and to grind it for you. I’d stick with stock valves myself, but clean up the head (mild grinding - don’t go crazy with it, these aren’t the best castings,) good 5 angle seat job ideally, and upgrade the springs. I haven’t gotten into upgraded slant six cams yet, but that is coming…
@@DeadDodgeGarage thanks for the prompt reply and your time much appreciated, yeah not wanting to go crazy, we build awesome motors down this way my uncle was one of the best, highly regarded in NZ Motorsport.
Keep up the great work all the best,Boris
At what point does a valve cover become a rocker cover? Rhetorical question... Also, is the starter motor too close to the torque converter? It sounds like the gear mesh might be a wee bit tight.
It covers the valves *and* the rockers… but I think it’s only called a rocker cover if you cross the Atlantic Ocean. It does sound odd, but there is no way to adjust the rear mesh on these.
The patina flavor looks like it would taste like white chocolate.. 😂
It is a video about a turbo valiant
Well, kinda
No working reverse lights? You have to fix that. So few 1963 Valiants had them.
I think the only car I have with working reverse lights is my Demon. Well, and the new Challenger.
A thin layer of grease will ensure that your valve cover gaskets do not stick to the head.
An Edelbrock carb is your favorite carburetor?... I begin to question your automotive sanity.
I never had any luck with them, give me a decent Holley carb and Alex Warlordy's Super Tuning Holley Carburetors book and I'm good to go. I need the book because I have CRS... ;-)
If I wanted gas to leak all over my intake manifold constantly, I would pick a Holley too 😁 give me the simple one that I can tune in two minutes without spilling a drop of fuel, and that has no seals or gaskets below the level of fuel in the bowls. I used grease on cork valve cover gaskets for years. Eventually I decided it just wasn’t worth the trouble. They come back off easily for quite some time without it.
@@DeadDodgeGarage, I suggested the grease because I've had cork gaskets stick to the rough cast iron heads in the past.
I never had any of those problems with my Holley carbs, the tuning isn't as bad as you think and they were much better and easier for me to tune with the book. The Edelbrock carbs I had suffered from internal issues from holes caused by bad castings, stripped threads, worn-out pump bores, etc., etc. That turned me off of them forever. I had better luck with even the cantankerous quadrajet carbs than I ever did with the Edelbrock carbs. Everybody has their preferences so whatever floats your boat. Good luck.
Well having a 95 dakota with 305k and a 3k mile trip in two weeks i do but dont have anxiety... Mopar Life
The front end resembles a rambler.
Who cares if its broken, as long as it looks good! 😂👌
