Really can’t decide whether I want to watch this video. Why do you have to Frankenstein everything that you get? Why do you put those stupid Chevy engines in a Ford get a small block Ford motor and put in it I know more people want Ford motors in their stuff and they’re not as available small block Chevy‘s, but try it once. Sheesh I like your videos but do something wrong right way once!
Well, the engine was already in it when I got it. And that Chevy made double the horsepower of the Ford flathead. Seems like a pretty reasonable option to me!
I don’t remember anyone asking for your opinion on what he does or doesn’t do with his own cars. If you don’t like it then don’t watch it. There’s plenty of us here that will watch it😘
We could find fault with anyone we work with. I envy MoJo, the man is living his best life and what a resource of knowledge and hard work. Thanks Mortske for having him around.
Just get a recliner, put it in the corner of the shop over by the heater, get him a cup of coffee whenever his cup goes dry. That way when you run into something you can't fix mojo is on hand to show you how he fixed that same issue back in 1973.
That truck is a great find. Back in the day we called that thing you pointed at and called it a "voltage regulator", we called a generator. I saw Duff roll his eyes. He is so tolerant.
Started rebuilding starters and alternators in my Dad and Uncle's shop when I was 11. Used an armature growler MANY TIMES! I knew that SOUND right away!!!
Mortske, I am glad you are the one that got this engine Because you took the time to actually check it out before starting it. One Of those air quotes barn find UA-cam would have likely destroyed half that engine By starting it without noticing the broken rod.
Cecil B. DeMille - David Lean - Alfred Hitchcock - John Huston - Mortske Repair! Epic Mortske Monday; the man follows through and gets it on the road. In three hours I watched the guy build a Hot Rod…Amazing. Best Supporting Actor: Duff!
I appreciate that you still keep it real and show how hard it can be to get stuff done instead of selling out and making everything look easy when it is not.
That's super sick for a gremlin I watched the whole build and you guys reminded me of when my dad and me did that when he was alive keep doing it and I'll keep watching .
Love hearing about these rigs, where they came from, what they were used for and how they were made to be functionally utilized. The real epitome of “make it work”
i can appreciate the emotional roller coaster reviving old stuck motors. I recently purchased a 1968 international travelall that had been sitting since 1982. everything was stuck. cooling system was solid with rust. ended filling the entire motor with trans fluid and diesel. two weeks later it rotated. it now runs and idles.
3 hours+... amazing. Miss second channel. Mortske minutes and maybe Mojo minutes? He is a wealth of knowledge that is fascinating to watch and listen to. He explains things in language I understand. Sir Duff is spectacular as usual. Kudos to Chin on flawless editing. Have a great day.
Huge thumbs up for Mojo and the growler. He has a couple of years on me but they were still teaching the use of a growler when I was in trade school. Awesome tool, always an awesome show.
On all lathe chucks the jaws can flip.. just note they should be numbered to put them back in numerical order so they pine back up for "self centering". But correct, all the lathes where I work are 4 jaw chucks. Great work!
My dad had one of those when I was little and it was really old then. But what a sweet truck! Dad sold it almost as fast as he got it. He could make everything run great! It was black with dark green fenders. This was great! Keep up the great videos!
Not one but two 289 massages - always appreciate your willingness to tear anything apart and fabricobble what needs it to get the heap running and rolling. Thanks for sharing!
Early on in this video you showed securing the pickup to the trailer and did a voice over of the seller's recall of the truck's story. This worked perfectly so please do more of this! Happy New Year!
It's pretty amazing, at the farm you picked up your truck(s), in the woods back where all those 50s cars and trucks are, just how they almost go back to nature. They aren't necessarily all rotted, but they all LOOK like their surroundings. They're somewhat rusted brown and any paint that was on them seems to have just turned a blue-green and they all just kind of camouflage and well go back to nature. Amazing find there, like you said, you'd never know any of that was back there. How neat is that?
Seeing Duff come out of the rain must've been an assault on the sinus! He no doubt didn't smell like a flower shop! I'll take a 38 Ford over a new F150 Lightning any day!
What a cool looking truck! The engine that was in it was so tantalizingly new and yet so rusty. Once you clean it up and dingle ball hone it will come around. I would like to see that. Thanks for another excellent video!
This length of video are the ones from which I learn the most. Case in point, I bought a set of six point wrenches for brake bleeders and the one way check valve (both of which are amazing) thanks to a long will it run video. So much knowledge to be had.
Leaf spring wraps were very common. My 46 Ford had them. My dad had a long needle that you fit a grease gun to and ran under the covers to lube the springs. Some covers did have their own fittings though. And I still have that old needle from pop's service station days!
Nice find !! The Lil 283 block is a gem .. steel crank hi compression pistons .. i built a few back in the day and they were screamers !! Looks like small valve heads but for a driver itll be ok.. i would use different heads but thats just me .. also depending on cam ya might wanna atleast pin the studs or install screw in.. i hope you continue sharing progress with the engine / truck.. I very much enjoy your channel and your encouraging me to get back out into shop and continue with my projects.. keep up the good work !!
My Dad would weld most everything with Bailing Wire & His Torches. Man, it would do a lot of poping. I think it would pop out more than he left sometimes!
I have never been one to watch long videos, but this one i didnt mind one bit. I am glad you took the time to go through that drivetrain like you did. Duff dog has it made.. he smiles all day long. I really like the look of that truck 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Oh man! What a great history on that thing! Such an interesting old thing. I'm glad you're able to save these old rigs as well as sharing their stories. Im only a few mns in... but i was compelled to comment. Thanks Mortske 😊
Excellent call on breaking it down & cleaning it up. What a find?! Congrats on finding such a gem sir! I didn't realize it's was going to be 3 hrs either. Hell yeah!! 😅😁
Excellent episode, and an excellent example of how one modification can expand into 12 when you're building a hot rod. Funny that the '66 2bbl 283 has Power Pack heads, while the 'hot rod' '59 283 doesn't. It'd be cool to hear how that cammed engine runs! And I'm pretty sure those are the most words I've ever heard Mojo speak on this channel...
My first car was a '63 Air Force blue Chevy Biscayne three on the tree with a 283! Went in the Air Force with that car. Security Police thought I was one of them! I was a Firefighter. Their loss.
Excellent project and wonderful video. Not surprised on the price but it likely going to sell fast. My 64 Corvette 327 365 HP had pistons like that 283. It was 11 to 1 compression. So that 283 could be a great little motor for another project. Duff was looking good. D
Pretty nice 283, steel crank, should be fun once you rub the ruff edges off, thread the crank for a damper bolt, not that much fun when they fly off. Pretty nice pickup, very dry body, saved a lot of labor on rust repair, should be a beauty when you work the bugs out.
THE 2 Flat pieces of metal you were talking about look like they may be a door hinge cover maybe for the inside of the door, 1 on each side more than likely top hinge. Just a guess Mr. Mortske, but I hope it helps if it is rite. You asked about these when yo were talking about the LOTS you had to purchase on the show.
The pistons are at least 11:1 with those domes. It's also a forged crank (you can tell by the wide, ground forging line. The valve springs and retainers are also larger than factory 283 valve springs. With those springs - make sure the rocker studs are at least pinned (or they can pull out).

You working on seized engine has reminded me of when I was 12 I worked on a fordson tractor 4cylinder flat head magneto spark. I removed the head and had a fire in the bore and used a block of fire wood hit with a wood head hammer it was crank start. I did get it going.
Hey Mortske, That red Buick wagon was a '68. three easy ways to tell 68' from 69' on the wagons and 2-4 door Skylarks. The 68's have the wind wing on the front doors the 69's had one piece front door window, the second way is the front fender trim. the 68's have the trim up high on the fender just like the one you see on the passenger side in your video and the 69's have shark gills in the dog leg at the bottom if the front fender. and last, look at the rear side marker lights, the 68's have a round rear side marker light and the 69's are rectangle side markers. Thanks Mortske, the 38'-39' ford pickup is my all time favorite truck, thanks for what ya do! Please say hi to Duff dog for me. Cheers!
Im late on this one...I think it's cool when you get the story of the rig you're getting by the guy who had it. Great video and thanks to everyone involved!🐾🍺
Congratulations on getting the '38 Ford pick'em up running! Ho-boy, what a saga😊. I saw one of the haters was giving their opinion on using a Chevy engine in a Ford. That's a good candidate for a build where you just make a solid daily driver nothing over the top just a good solid finished out car. I love it just can't afford it. Beautiful car this comment was for the 63 Pontiac barn find. It switched videos while I was writing. I'm slow on the texting thing. Lol
That Mallory coil "Volt Master" is a GREAT coil! Even with the weird coil wire cover (2 screw cover) I am still running 1 put into service in 1978 & is still going strong today! It's running in my 3rd Pontiac GTO & 5th motor's run with Nitrous (400, 428, & 455 engine's)! It work's flawlessly. Don't change a thing if I were you! It's a real Sleeper!
