I'm Building A Turbo Slant Six! Atomic EFI Swap To Prepare My 1963 Plymouth Valiant For Boost

- Yeah, yeah... Tony Angelo already did it. But aside from having a turbo in the mix, there is almost zero relation between his awesome, cheap and sketchy D100 build and what I've got going on here. And I've been planning this one for years. If you want more background on the recipe, I did a video almost a year and a half ago detailing my plans for this build. One thing has changed - I will no longer be installing a used, 200k mile Cummins turbo. What flavor of spooly boy I go with remains to be seen. In all likelihood, it will have come straight over the pond from the land of cheap parts and industrial wonderment. But that's a subject for a future video. Today, I want to get the new intake and four barrel MSD Atomic EFI system in place and make some fuel injected slant six noises for the first time. Let's dig in!
I rate this video 225/225
Nice/nice
I think... YES for everything about to continue this turbo build valiant. Period
I don't care tony already did it, I'm still watching
Yeah, comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges.
@@Cfchild1one has mechanical sympathy and the other doesn't. Lol
Turbo slant in a truck and valiant. 2 diff builds. Much more room in the truck.
@@dartdude4084 trucks are okay & big time more room. But that valiant is tits !
This one gives a whole new meaning to the buzzin’ half dozen. 🐝
With everything on the to-do list, it's still AWESOME!
Great Video as always! Sure enjoy watching you work on all these neat Mopar's! Keep up the great work!
Truly a work of industrial art,the early A bodies.
there were the last of the 60s cars still seen daily on the roads in the 90s.
I have this same Atomic setup on my 5.9 Magnum in my 87 Power Ram since 2018 it has been flawless..also i used returnless fuel pump just for ease of use..lol Youll be happy with The Atomic....The Centerline Wheels on the Valiant are just Glorious..!!!
I had a 65 valiant 4 door that I turbocharged with some random international tractor parts it was so much fun we called it cream cheese 😂
Oh that’s awesome. Haha.
Well instead of "cookies" or "donuts", that car will be required to perform circular burnouts as "bagels." I'm sure I would have LOVED a ride in Cream Cheese... 😆
Red paint adds 5% horsepower and torque!
I had a 340 Dart Swinger it is Red (Still, current owner is tossing an insane amount of money at a $25K car) and I can verify, fast and torquey. Has to be the color...
@@tattmanndann speed parts sticks helps make more power too. /ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\
That thing is so Kool!! I would definitely roll in the car daily 👍🏻 can't wait to see the back tires burn out ✌🏻🏁🎵🎶
*in situ* (in SY-too) In its original place. It's Latin & literally translates to simply *_In the place_* [where it belongs]. Yes, I took 2 years of Latin in school!
BTW, a *signet* is a seal used to mark documents, but (exact same pronunciation) a *cygnet* is a young swan! Rock on dude.
Outstanding. I didn’t. 😅
That fire off and you in panic mode for the idle was classic 😮
Who cares what Uncle Talks too much did, I wanna see how Jaime does the job. Let Tony sit in his rocking chair and talk about fudgy the whale 🤣
I’ll be old some day too…
It wasn't UTG Tony that did the turbo slant. It was Stay Tuned Tony that did a turbo slant in a D100.
Doesn't matter if Tony did something similar. I still want to see this.
Jamie, this is so cool! It's so cool that it actually runs!
My first car! ‘63 Signet 200, in 1977. Excellent birth control device (for a kid in high school, you know what I mean)
Cool project. The Slant6 is truly under appreciated. Looking forward to seeing the turbo portion of the build.
I’ve been a welder for 38 years and I’m on the verge of some kind of unpleasant coronary event…
Yeah you don’t want to watch any of this, broëther.
Lol
I've had actual boogers that looked better than the welds.
Back in the day we would throw a 4 barrel on a 2 barrel manifold with an adaptor plate works brilliant
You haven't been watching long huh ? Much more sketchy structural welding before this. Welding cast manifolds ... at least not aviation structure. hehe
So much cooler than some Ls swap. Tony and Barb’s is cool asf. Doesn’t take any of the coolness away from yours.
I completely agree on all points. Any crap I sent their way in these video was merely in jest 😁
My dad had a 63 Valiant wagon when I was 15... I'm 53 now. He pulled into our driveway one summer evening driving a meticulous wagon that he just bought off a local farmer for 300 bucks. (circa 1985) THAT was the car I learned to drive in and he taught me how to adjust the valves, among other valuable skills. He kept that car for a few years until he traded it for a 66 Chevy pickup with a 327... He wouldn't let me drive that. 😉
Again, this is 10 times better than the scatter shot bullshit coming from UTG.
I appreciate what Tony has to say. But it’s definitely a different thing than what I’ve got going on.
I stopped going there when he built a engine to run on Nick's Dyno . It was awful and embarrassing .
I believe it was 1972 or 71 that Hot Rod did a turbo on a 225 slant in a duster. It was a low boost set up using the turbo and 1 barrel carb from a turbo charged 215 V8 Olds. It was not super quick ( mid 14's if i remember right ), but still cool.
At the time, mid 14s was what a lot of stock muscle cars ran.
We've got a sayin down here for ol' Vals.U cant kill em with Abuse or Neglect. luv em
Great video Jaime don’t touch it leave it alone just put the turbo on it. I love it.Lolo
Bingo!
Early A Body projects rule! Great stuff. Love the centerline wheels on the Valiant.
A904 is magnificent. Light reciprocating & can hack it. The other bonus is you can clutch start it as it has rear oil pump.
Very true. I think I’m going to stick with it for a while.
Those push clip zip ties are a favorite of mine. There’s always a little hole on the frame or body where they work perfect 👍
I am English and approve of this entertainment. Good show old chap.
Got a soft spot for these. My first car when I turned 16 was my dad's 63 signet 2 door 3 on the tree rig.
Wow! I'd LOVE to get that red Fury there!
Great progress in just one video…make sure to film the first big burnout so we can see the 7.25 go boom! Love those Centerlines.
Oh… I’ll film it. Haha.
Your restoration work is a marvel! This video had me hooked from start to finish. The level of detail and care you put into this car is awe-inspiring
I smell a Sema build
when i was 16 i bought a 61 dodge dart pioneer with a slant six....this is awesume video
Take a trip and race Tony Angelo!
I like that little a body. Love the intake what a great idea
I’m so intrigued by this build! I turbo my 73 dart
I mounted the push-button shifter, on my '64 Valiant, in the center console. One of only 2 cars I owned that I was comfortable parking anywhere with the top down.
It’s AWESOME! I want one!
My 1st car was a 63 Valiant I bought from my sister for $75 back in 76. My dad and I fixed a 17in crack in the water jacket with WaterGlass,or sodium silicate. Ran for 2 years til I roached the rear axle doing neutral slams with the pushbutton trans
Going to be a tire fryer sometime soon! That one sweet smoky right rear. Put your bad wheel on there and let it “spin”balance itself 😂
That’s not far off of the plan 😅
Yes, Yes, Yes !! Automatic transmission delete, and nuke hat 7 1/4" HaHa!! ( A friend of mine has a 1964 Dart station wagon, and as he was rebuilding his 7 1/4", I couldn't believe how tiny the axle shafts and bearings are, not to mention the dinky gearset.) Those lace pattern wheels are really cool, and they started showing up in the mid sixties, so they are period correct !
63 is the perfect year for a turbo slant. Since the small block gotta do little mods to fit
No complaints from me. I know this has been in the works for a minute or 2....awesome seeing it start to happen. Congratulations.
Weld a plate over the heat riser. That's what was done to seal the manifold on the turbo conversion I removed from the /6 on my 69 dart. That was built with a Buick draw through carb setup bolted to a modified cast iron 1bbl manifold.
In the late seventies where I lived there was a nice mettalic blue '63 Plymouth Signet , very exotic , it was the only one around. When I first saw it , it was a very tidy car , but about 5 years later it was as rough as a goats knee .
Who needs a 2JZ when you can build this.
Exactly!
@@DeadDodgeGarageI AM OUTRAGED!!!!......HOW DARE YOU SIR .....HOW DARE YOU SIR DESTROY THE SACRED DESIGNS OF SUPERIOR MOPAR ENGINEERS BY THROWING A FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM!!!!.....
NOT IN AMERICA SIR ..
NOT IN AMERICA SIR ..
just kidding Jaime can't wait to see how it goes
A 2JZ is tame without a turbo - very smooth, but not a lot of power
2JZ is sexy, cheap and can handle gobs of induction...while still reliable. but I get what you are saying.
You need one if you want to go fast.
Dude that is an awesome car!
I attempted to run a return line into the vent tube on my 65 A body with a mechanical fuel pump. The return fuel went about equal parts back into the tank and down the side of the car out of the gas cap. Not the desired result. After some thought I pulled the filler tube from the tank, drilled and taped a hole for a pipe fitting, and then covered the junction with fuel tank repair putty. The fitting and return hose face the back seat. Was cheap, no dangerous drilling, and I am happy with the result. Did wind up putting a new filler neck grommet in the tank.
That was my thought! But on these, you have to drop the tank to get the filler neck out 🤦♂️
Looking forward to this build. Still have the hemi 215 which i replaced with a 265 in my ute. Reckon most of what you're doing will work on that engine.
Absolutely! I’ve got at least a few bucks that says your Hemi 6 will respond to boost much better.
I think Saab uses 2 turbos. A small one is kept spooled up most of the time and a larger one for 'on demand' power. It was to reduce turbo lag. Squeeze another one in.
Absolutely a possibility some day. There is a lot of merit to the twin turbo setup. For simplicity, I’ll take the lag. Heck, I’ve got a nitrous kit, that could also help. Haha
@@DeadDodgeGarage When I see a set of Dutra Duals, I think Saab.. it's weird. IDK how a small turb on one ex mani and a slightly bigger one on the other would work but, well... I see stuff.
That 4 barrel manifold looks neat, sounds like you got ift all figured out just a question of gettin er done!
it's the best day at work ever.
Brilliant,I had a 65. Handcleaner Worx product of Canada, made from celulouse I believe and Doctor brushes. I get them from Lee Valley Hardware. You will thank me and your wife will love it.
If you go to transitioning to turbo, one of the key needs is to have a bowl cut into the pistons to reduce the compression ratio and allow higher boost levels on non-race fuel. You probably want to go to something like 7.2:1 (or even less) but I'm not familiar with that engine. It all depends on how much turbo boost you expect. I'd shoot for 16 psi boost.
I’m not doing a thing. These were advertised as being 8.4:1, but it’s *highly* unlikely it’s actually that high. It is likely in the 8:1-8.2:1 range. Incidentally, the mid 2000s WRX STI has a compression ratio of 8.2:1. I bring that up because that car is part of what inspired me to build this. I am shooting for 10-12 PSI. But will be happy to push my luck with big numbers when it’s time to build a more serious engine.
Those motors didn’t have much compression to begin with. More fun to just throw on a turbo and see what happens! I’m guessing it won’t make enough boost to hurt itself 👍
@@minnesotatomcat😳🤣 we shall see lol.

When I worked at the infamous Bayer boys learned about the push button and how cool it truly is
Sweet! Looking forward to see where this goes! Turbo 225!
I would like to improve the power of the 225 in my 64 Dart wagon some, I have an offy 4 bbl intake and header,3 and 3 into separate 2.25 pipes.. I have a good start for now.. also have a 500 edelbrock carb... just need to get it all installed... I enjoy your videos.. the 63 Valiant signet is super..
This seems like a good application for one of those diesel add a sump kits that just need a hole drilled in the bottom of the tank
Great thinking!
Forget the haters You do great work 👍
Prudence could give welding lessons with her hooves and blind folded and have those results... always looking forward to seeing more...thanks....🐐🔧🔧👍
I had one of those Offenhauser valve cover on my slant six 69 Dart it was a t hing of beauty on a slant sixe
I just saw one on a car at the Woodburn show last weekend. It was almost polished to a mirror finish, and it was a thing of beauty.
I love those efi clamps because I only use them correctly
See, that makes sense! Me, on the other hand…
@@DeadDodgeGarage why dude why?
Really enjoyed it so far mate good work 👏 hanging for turbo haha I'm rolling old 65 pontiac 350 chevy with home made turbo running efitech
The front end of those cars reminds me of the faces on the vehicles of Thomas the Tank Engine characters 🤣🤣
Victor the Valiant is feeling cheeky today! 🤣
I loved that show when I was wee. It’s all starting to make sense
I like what your doing with this project 👍cool and different
I just recently found your channel and enjoy watching your stuff. Keep up the good work.
Thank you!
Sounds happy considering stuffs not even connected correctly 🥰As for bodywork , fix the hole in the floor and the rear valance part and arch and leave the rest as is - dont polish it -ever
Two thumbs up from the Land Downunder too mate...cant wait for spooly boi noises
This is awesome Jamie, I can't weight to see it running 15 lbs of boost! And yes, it's gotta have 15lbs of boost. That's what brings a slant 6 to life...
We’ll get there!
Baseball bat for rolling the quarters cone shape to gradually increase size
Yep. I just didn’t have one handy, so I thought I’d give this a try. Not so much lol.
Only use the egr port for a blow off valve if you want to explode when you vent a mixed air fuel mixture under the hood
I hadn’t thought about that 😅
No complaints. Great content!
I built a turbo on a 66 Rambler 232 6. it made the 90 hp 6 a300+ hp rocket ship. used a side draft SU carb. and made an intake manifold. and other stuff. I stopped driving it in 2009 and 500k miles. Still have it and started it a couple of weeks ago. it was fun.
22:30 Tip I saw from Thunderhead289, coat your carb/throttle body gasket with grease so it will last many years and stay reusable.
Evan at Rocket always uses that trick. It’s a good one. I used to grease cork valve cover gaskets but got tired of the mess, and it didn’t work as well as I had been led to believe for sealing.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I just presumed it was good for sealing from air leaks, not fluid leaks.
I watched the video already, but I had to jump back on here. Tony Angelo just doubled the boost on the turbo slant lol yours is still way cooler though.
Yeah now I have to go watch that one. Lol.
I put Vincent Labs Dual Intake/ Dual Exhaust on my blueprinted 225 SS in my 72 Valiant! Not many turbos way back then.
Nice!
Use a fuel sump. Pump from manual pump into sump (with internal electric fuel pump). Then send the fuel output of sump into TBI EFI. Out of TBI back to tank. That way all the wiring is under the hood and if you choose to go back to carbureted, you can either pull the fuel sump or swap the electric fuel pump to a lower pressure pump all without having to drop the gas tank.
A clever solution. I've seen them built with a Holley bowl and float for level control. But I found an EFI tank, and it should be here any time now...
I like the back deck for some 12" WOOFERS to blow out all the windows!
That’s all you 😅
So smooth. I want that EFI in a crappy Volare with the smooth ride.
Its so smooth it almost has a jet turbine sound. I bet an overhead Boeing Maxx dropped a jet engine somewhere out up in there and he's got it mounted in the trunk.
😮
oh I have slant six stories too ..we could swap slant six stories like swapping wound stories from that scene from Jaws lol
Now that’s cool and I’m surprised it runs so good without ECT and correct FP,very cool project can’t wait for the whistle noises.
Turns out I was really close on fuel pressure. But I was also surprised.
🇺🇸👍 1st,2nd,3rd it don’t matter your doing it and when finished it will be great!!!
glad you are doing a 63. had a 63 sprint in the 80s. only different,s is my seat,s out of a thunderbird. oh and mine was blue.
Back in the day we would throw a 4 barrel on the 2 barrel manifold with an adaptor plate, works brilliant
I’m not excited about creating that kind of restriction. Admittedly, there are plenty more restrictions further down the line though.
Why is it my favorite motor is the 383, but yet, I can't wait to see you turbo this thing! Red paint = more horsepowers!
Great project n a hell of a lot of work in one video. Cool man!
Awesome
Hey Jaimie, in case you run into drivability issues with the msd efi in the future, I ran into that about 8 years ago and it ended up being the difference of about 6 inches location distance for the o2 sensor. Just something to keep in mind 👍🏼
Oh, that’s interesting. It may be a little far from the collector, I just put it in the easiest spot. It will be moving when it’s turbo time.
@@DeadDodgeGarage that's what I did as well. Just picked the easiest spot. I figured that since it's a heated wide band, there would be no issues. I was "wrong" lol.
The slant 6 is the only engine that rivaled the Rolls Royce engine for reliability and longevity - this project is very much "worth it".
I had a 63 Signant 200 2dr. hardtop, 170 slant-six., push-button auto. It had a ball and ball Carter carb.,a reliable lttle car.
Nice Krieger reference!
I’m proud of that. Haha.
Years ago i bought some left over 225 parts off a successful drag racer who cut his teeth on the strip upping HP with a 225 slanter. He had upgraded to a Blown BBC by that stage. He didn't elucidate, but commented the weak link on the Slant 6 was the crank... Thats a heavy piece of iron. Sure would make a fantastic sound if it broke up! Would be your viral video, no doubt
I kinda like the goofy wheels....my former 69 charger had a wider similar style on the rears and slots on the front. It was different but I liked it.
your work is awesome
Centerlines, gotta love them.
I would double check your timing marks to make sure that they are correct to top dead center, also I’m not sure if coolant flows through the heater hoses if the heat is not on
I did. Yes, it does.
the spitting tower of power...
Something like that 😅
I enjoyed the video and am looking forward to the cars progress. I’m not sure why you did the throttle body offset like that. i guess I’ll find out. I have run snipers on a Ford and am not a real fan, although I picked one up from a co- worker for $300 so it’s an option. I’ve got a similar project just put the Dutras and the Offy on it yesterday. I keep going back and forth, keep the slant or do a V8.
I thought I explained that in this video. Basically, I dropped a four barrel carb spacer on top of an 80s aluminum one barrel and that was where it fit and made sense. So I decided I’d give it a try. Cool! That’s one of life’s tough calls… I’ve ripped many slants out over the years in favor of small blocks. I currently have two small block A bodies, four B bodies, etc. I want to make power and leave the slant six, so that’s what I’m doing this time around.
