Great vid. If you own a house; you work on it. If you own an RV; you work on it. If you own a boat; you work on it. To me its all the same and for me, once I've fixed (improved it) it then it will last for a VERY long time. So enjoy is the key because they all take money and work. Ciao from Sidney, BC
Hey you got the best guy for the headliner he moved up your way. James Knight at Yacht Tech Inc. He moved from Florida to WA check out his channel, he gives wonderful insight to the Nordhaven Yachts. Have a wonderful week. God Bless in all you do.
Minute 10:07 A beautiful "Bartender" at Sucia. Don't see those much any more. As a kid in the late '50s I'd watch the Coast Guard leave Depot Bay on the Oregon Coast in their Bartender (designed and built at that time in Lincoln City). Thanks for all the work to film, edit and post your videos!
Thank you so much for the puppy time. That little Ms Martha is a real little water bug isn’t she. And another super repair by the boat guru,Shawn you are very methodical and persistent in your repairs and I truly enjoy every bit of it. You have a beautiful home with a fantastic view.
Water is our friend until it isn't our friend. Shaun, thanks for sharing the insight of how boats, like friendships and relationships are hard work and in constant flux and repair but in the end, so well worth the effort especially when you have major boat skills like your team does. Today's lesson was very good> Thank you.
I really liked your hull scrubbing machine !! Also taking care of that pesky leak was a pain, but as usual Shawn had things figured out and problem solved. The headliner job was time consuming, but the results are beautiful and when you stand back you have to compliment yourself on a job well done. Both of you tackle jobs on MV Freedom and then enjoy the fruits of your labor. Hope the rest of your weekend and coming week bring happiness and enjoyment. Take care of each other and live it up !!
what a multi task Captain, and first Mate, and electrician , and mechanic , and carpenter and bottom boat algae cleaner , I'm impressed , well done Captain
🤣18 year old boats parked in salt water in a climate that freezes and thaws will always have those types of issues. Nordhavns are universally recognized as one of the sturdiest and best cruising boats around, yet with tons of systems, redundancies, and creature comforts in a constant salt water environment, it requires constant upkeep. Good videos for those who are thinking of being live-aboard cruisers, as my rvs and sailboats always required almost as much time and/or money to maintain as enjoy. Check out the used boats that never received such care and you’ll see a marked difference. Keep up the good work.
Little screw leak was made out to be quite a big deal, I guess that’s the goal to produce content. Beautiful boat, hard working captain. Also good editing and interesting music, thank you.
You did a great job on the headliners. Let's face it, boats are work but as long as you're enjoying the fun times more than working, it's worthwhile. Your videos are so gret. I'm sure you hate the wind because it's cold Elizabeth but when you head south to the heat, you'll love the wind. Pats to Martha and Sully.
So nice to watch a handyman. Always wished I had some of those skills. Thank God there is such a thing as a desk job. Lack of any mechanical ability is why I never had a motor yacht and stuck with sailboats.
Misery loves company….I am heartened to see that my Nordic Tug 42 AWEIGH isn’t the only high quality boat that has droopy headliner issues. At least the Nordhavn panels are relatively easy to remove and re-do when compared to the NT. A good project for a rainy day! Great combination of cruising and maintenance content…keep it up. I just subscribed 👍👍👍
Glad To Hear You made it To our area. Sorry for the wierd weather. Hope To get back To your area again . Will be at the Seattle boat show This year. See you there? Thanks for the great posts.
Oh yes, the familiar frustration of a boat owner. I try to keep my SeaRay impeccable. So, to my chagrin, I was walking on the bow deck and found it a bit "squishy". Lots of investigation and we discovered that screw holes that hold the windshield down, were leaking (presumably for years). $10,000 later and the deck is fixed. Who would have believed those little screws could cause all that damage. The list goes on, but I'll stop now. Great video and super job on the headliner.
What a bummer Michael especially with how much pride you put in your Sea Ray. We take great care of our Mercedes but the differential just went out and waiting for parts from Germany. Never heard of a MB differential failing.
I’ve owned many Boat’s, fishing specifically! Did a lot of repairs myself, still boat’s are extremely expensive to maintain! That’s why,I’m Boat-less, there’s always something to repair! The cost’s outweigh the pleasure!
If and when you ever decide to sell MV Freedom, it's safe to say it would be in a better condition than what it was when you purchased it. There's new and then there's better than new... you guys are amazing.
I live on Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, England, we have a saying , whilst looking to the hills of The Lake District National park... " if ya can't see the hills, it's rainng. If ya can see the hills... it's going to rain"!
That “water proof” scrubber/ drill is a great solution. The foam just disintegrated, probably due to age, moisture, temp etc. Seen it in cars. The thin foam just gives the vinyl a smooth look, covering/ hiding any defects in the sub structure/wood panels.
Love following your adventures! We lived aboard our 43’ Tradewinds for 5 years always said that living aboard is just “working on your boat in exotic places”. Have fun!
When replacing, hatch's or repairs. All screw holes will be larger. Shifting, waves, sun , snow, rain. Screws wiggle, not alot. But .0000001, unscrew, holes get get bigger . The fix is always roll the new screws in silicone. ( try not to use the old screws if you can, the threads have been compressed, and expanded. Put new ones in ). If there rot in the screw hole, dry it out, heat gun or sun, if it fiber glass, mix small amount of a epoxy, smash it into the hole, or inject it in to the hole, let it cure. Redrill pilot hole. Then screw. Have fun. Put a small dab of silicone on top of the screw head when done. And seal around the hatch.
We had sailboat and loved the wind when we could get it. It was very fickle in the San Juans and in Puget Sound as well. We always enjoyed Shallow Bay at Sucia Is. for the fantastic sunsets!
“It’s one thing or another on this boat”. All boats are in constant need of repair. “We don’t like wind” make friends with the wind and you’ll like it. :-) and it will add fun, flavor and frivolity to your experiences.
Just found you. This is only second vid. Got to find the rest, this is what I dreamt of 30 years ago when I was your age. Fresh out of navy. Just vicariously loving it. Ya when disability comes in I will purchase some merch. Do not care if you send the t shirt, just want to see more vids. You guys stay safe… and keep videos coming.
I have owned a few boats made in China I now have one made in North America. An incredible difference in quality. Nordhavn are quality built boats. You can see from the gel coat finish above the headliner. There was attention to detail even in concealed locations. All boats will leak sooner or later it's just the nature of the movement of the fiberglass due to temperature and flexing in Heavy Seas however now that I have a North American built boat I will never go back. As a side note I probably would have gone after the screws first before removing the teak trim around the hatch. Hindsight is 20/20
Is that J.J. Cale? Love J.J. Cale. Love your channel seems like I am watching it everyday. Keep on living the dream and fighting the good fight. Living vicariously through you.
I now live in the San Juans. This has been the darkest, coldest, windiest and wettest winter/spring I have seen in 41 years coming here. Cloudy and 59 today, hoping for some better weather next month.
Looks like a good solution to the headliner.....hope it works long term. My Dad had a 46' wood Chris Craft when I was in college and it was constant maintenance. Thanks for sharing your travels and occasional tribulations!
After boating "up there" religiously for fifteen-plus years, we experienced the romance, great times and countless adventures. We're glad we indulged, but don't miss it...especially those non-summer wet/foggy summers and endless boat maintenance. Not to claim it's originality but, "The two happiest days of a boaters life is the day the boat is purchased and the day it's sold". Favorite ports: Rosario (Honeymoon), Port Townsend/Point Hudson (Quiet), Roche Harbor (Vibrant), Victoria (Classy) and Nanaimo (Getaway). 😎
After lining in the Seattle area most of my life, I agree this has been a gray and dreary spring. I can remember at least one spring where it rained until Fourth of July weekend. Then there is July, August, September and most of October. Best kept secret of the PNW. I like Shawn's pessimism, his expectations are always met and he is never disappointed.
Well I guess when you live surrounded by water from the bottom and the top you're going to have to deal with some moisture as long as you don't have to start going to bed with your scuba gear on you should be fine.
I feel for all y'all that live on boats. I've been trying to overcome many of these obstacles. One thing I see is that I won't be having any "below the waterline" through hull fittings on mine. I really don't care what it takes. I mean...pump the stuff.
50 degree water - I'd be wearing at least a PFD on the standing board - Hypothermia kicks in quickly at those temps and you can lose use of your extremities... (I do like the wetsuits later in the video - Good deal!) How often do you need to clean the growth off? The tool makes it look easy, tho I'm sure it's not.
I continue to be amazed at you folks. Your dedication to maintenance is commendable. I'm a few days away from doing the same thing on land. Stored all we own and taking off for a year or two. Maybe our next adventure will be at sea. Nice work 007 and Ms. Moneypenny. Nice work. You guys are awesome.
Great video!!! You guy's, thank God you're not boring!!! I subscribed!!! You guy's are great, fun and interesting together!!! I enjoy watching your videos!!! Keep them coming!!! Life is good!!! Enjoy!!!🙂👍
Problem with older boats you think are in "great shape" because they look so good, is you can't see things like hatch gaskets drying out or rotting, and when they fail the leaks start happening. Being handy is a great attribute for old boat owners.
Have you ever considered installing Soni-Hull on your boat? It’s intended to discourage and slow down marine growth on the hull. I bought mine from PYI in Seattle, who are helpful with install questions (though Sean seems to have all the needed skills anyway). You would need two transducers for your boat size but I’ve found it worthwhile on my past two boats. Less diving in muck.
Shawn is so realistic….yep the leak will show up right when you start falling asleep. These things always seem to happen at the worst time as if someone is watching you. Unbelievable!

It might help the resale value too having leather (a classier option) liners. Your thoughts? Only if you needed to do it all again of course. Also when I have to SCUBA to clean a hull in the past, I attached 3 lines from front to back - one over the keel and two that go along the chines and then tie cross lines from side to side about

Sean is good at explaining the upholstery procedure. You both work hard at maintaining your vessel.

Big improvement for the headliner. Great job.
Always enjoy your videos and kinda of fun to see my boat in a background shot. How about an update on how the Starlink is working out?
So far so good, in a few months we’ll share a more comprehensive update.

Appreciating the bead board headliner in the Grand Banks. But somewhat different animal.

Nice episode! Stay safe Freedom crew!! 👍👍
Nice job on the headliners...I am doing the same...I am using a heat gun to just get a bit more stretch of the vinyl before stapling.

I’m sure he wanted to know where any water damage was and dry it out as much as possible. 🤷🏼♂️
Well no leaks are good but a leak on top is better than a leak on the bottom, the vinyl looks great after you fixed it

Yeah, water always finds a way in on a boat. Happy "Junuary!"
Thanks again for sharing.
Butyl tape around the screws does wonders to seal the holes, and never hardens so it makes a great continuous seal.
I was going to say exactly the same thing :) Butyl tape is the only way to effectively seal hatch frames that are bolted in place.
You two crack me up! Love the candidness. We are full time RV’ers very similar just on land. Love your channel , glad your back!
I feel for all y'all that live on boats. I've been trying to overcome many of these obstacles. One thing I see is that I won't be having any "below the waterline" through hull fittings on mine. I really don't care what it takes. I mean...pump the stuff.

Great video but I have a question, when you both were diving the boat did you run up the divers in the water flag?
Great video!!! You guy's, thank God you're not boring!!! I subscribed!!! You guy's are great, fun and interesting together!!! I enjoy watching your videos!!! Keep them coming!!! Life is good!!! Enjoy!!!🙂👍
Great video once again. Elizabeth, what diving gear did you invest in?
I have had many leaks and trying to find the source can be difficult until I used baby powder to track back to the origin.
Great content. I've noticed the headliners for awhile. Makes me smile that you both did too!!!!
Its just about time to see MV Freedom in those warm blue Caribbean waters is it not? JC
And the beautiful Elizabeth in her bikini!
It is one thing after another on ALL boats.
Great job on the leak and headliner!!! Great team!!!👍
Love the J.J. Cale music!
Love the boat design as for the location it’s stunning a great escape many thanks 😊
Great job on the headliner and leak. 👏

I would have thought these Nordhavn yachts were built with quality. Disappointed to hear the constant issues!
All boats have issues.
Well done ..Shawn ...on your ceiling panel repair..looks great..We missed this video for some reason....Enjoy the Fall season...
Have you ever considered installing Soni-Hull on your boat? It’s intended to discourage and slow down marine growth on the hull. I liked your video, you guys have a good sense of humor, keep up the good work.
Shawn is so realistic….yep the leak will show up right when you start falling asleep. These things always seem to happen at the worst time as if someone is watching you. Unbelievable!
Sometimes we have the same problems at home. So, enjoy your nice boat cause we’ll be here waiting your videos every week. Regards from Brazil.
The next time you look like having to do the hood-liners, if it was me, I would be getting some nice leather cut to size and putting leather up there.

What’s so sad is what you said in the beginning is so true!
when you said 5mm, I shivered. I did my certification in Monterey Bay with a 7mm farmer John. Froze my ass off.
You guys should contact Dr. Nordhavn himself! James Knight. He is up in Anacortes and YachtTech headliners are the best
Another great video. I really like that NEMO Brush.
I was wondering if you will ever made your CAD file available for the Starlink base? I know I would love to have it to made one.
Nice tricks! Living in a home on land we have just as many projects as any home……if you want to keep it nice 👍🏻❤️. We just replaced our double pain windows….ouch on the bank account❤️.

Wah, 60º? It was 106º with a heat index of 112º here. Enjoy the cool weather!
Dive gear takes a bunch of fresh water to rinse. How much fresh water gets used up in cleaning tasks?

Great job on those panels Shawn, they really look like new.
Aren’t you losing some sound dampening when you remove the foam in the headliners?
If the foam was only glued to the fabric and not the wood, it might be a better solution for sound and looks.
