It's sad that people can't have an opinion if it varies from yours. Grow up people, politics is meant to divide the country. Agree to disagree, put your big boy pants on and have a good day.

Semco is a great choice for a natural looking teak surface. I did the same thing on both the hand and toe rail on my 53 Defever. Turns a slick surface into a rail that you can actually grab when wet! Just be sure to recoat before it wears away.

Never, ever, ever allow your autopilot to make pre-programmed turns for you. If you want to use it to navigate to a point, fine. Just set your point well enough ahead of your intended turn that you can either hand steer through the turn or punch in the turn yourself at the appropriate time. Allowing your autopilot to decide it's safe to initiate a turn, especially in restricted waters, is a recipe for disaster, as you experienced. I caught my crew doing that once on a Chesapeake Bay trip and, trust me, they'll never do it again! Props to you for "fessing up." Experience is the best teacher. Someone else's experience is usually less expensive!

I have seen that some newest Nordhavn Yachts are using a teak wood imitation instead of the real teak because it does not require any maintenance and still looks great, but it is even more expensive than real teak. Using a sealant instead of varnish is probably a good idea to make it easier to maintain in the future, good job!

All good ideas, but I use two coats of Cetol Marine Gloss finish over a first coat (on bear teak) of Cetol Natural Teak finish. Really brings out the beauty of the wood like no other method, and holds up (no flaking or bleaching) for years with no sanding between coats or when refinishing! Heart warming teak rails and next-to-no maintenance!

Should you ever go from Florida to the Bahamas you will experience a current of more than 5 knots in the Gulf Stream heading north. Should your boat only be making about 7-8 knots, your autopilot following a course will turn further and further south to try to maintain no cross track error until it is pointing due south against the current. As a result, your distance made good will go to zero and you never get to the Bahamas. Instead of following a route, you need to calculate the northerly set you will incur during the crossing using average boat and average Gulf Stream current speed.

"Driving the magenta line" is actually a fairly common mistake many people make. Its common for people using auto pilot tied to their plotter, to just watch the progress on the course line, and not the water around them. To combat that potentially disastrous scenario (I ran aground once because of it) I am constantly checking and marking my location on paper charts using nav aids. Its the main reason paper charts are always next to me at the helm of ANY boat I am steering. Especially when using a plotter!. Glad you are sharp and aware, and did not hole that beautiful vessel!

Agree that it is better to avoid wood, but if you have it, it sure looks nice varnished. My son makes a living refinishing teak on boats and says that if you gave your rails a light sanding and a coat of varnish every year, you would go five or six years between major refinishing. For the serious refinish, hire someone to do it. Rails like yours can be done while the boat is in the water and aren't that expensive to get done because you are not paying for skilled labor.

I don’t know anything about boats but I am a pilot and an aircraft owner, when my autopilot « makes a programmed turn, » it follows a signal (in this case gps), any deviation to the programmed « path », caused by the wind or current, will be followed by an appropriate « correction » from the autopilot. The reaction time from the autopilot (any and all autopilots will react more or less with the same lag), will result in a deviation from that path. He reacted much faster than any autopilot ever could. Good job!

Apply two coats then wait a half an hour to let the coating set, then pull off the tape.
It will save you a lot grief and frustration in the process.
Also work out of a 1 gal pail/can with an inch of varnish in the can , use a 2 inch pure bristle brush, let it hang in water over night if you need, it will keep soft and usable the next day.

Yeah, but did you see how shallow it gets there? Whatcha gonna do with an tender that grounds way off the beach, let alone having to pull up the outboard and pole you way closer? I admire that they have this option and are young enough to pull it off!

Have't returned to Spenser Spit in a long time due to the flies. Did I see you at Echo Bay Tuesday and Wednesday?
