In this video I show you how to remove the clutch cable on a Big Twin Harley Davidson. I use a 2008 Harley Davidson Road Glide to show the process, and your bike might vary slightly depending on the year and model, but the process should be similar.
Thanks for watching!
Even 10 years later, this is still helpful! Many thanks.
just did all this on the side of the hwy. thank you brother..
UA-cam is great for DIY. Glad you got it fixed
This is one of the best UA-cam videos I have ever seen it's basic and simple and easy to understand I'm not a master mechanic so I need things put in simple terms thanks for the warnings about the bearings and I look forward to succeeding in the installation
This is the part I'm dreading of my upcoming ape hanger installation. This video will be an amazing help.
Im doing this next weekend on my '07 Road King. Thanks for the great informative video. I hope you're still alive and well 10 years later. 🍻
Even though I've done this before, this was the best and easiest video I've ever seen perfectly done, all the way down to how the snap ring should be positioned, great job keep up the good work you got a new subscriber. Peace from FL 🌴
Thanks
This was the best "HOW TO" I have ever had to use. Many thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to post such a clear description of how to do this job. Great to have this with me, whilst doing this job. Your presentation and camera work are so clear.
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding video. It answered every question that I had when I clicked on the title. Very well done!
Clear and easy to understand. Great instruction, thank you for taking the time to help us.
Thanks for watching!
Great video buddy! I'm changing my handlebar and wanted to make sure I didn't have any surprises and glad I did cause I need to find my snap ring pliers first. Perfect video tho really. Very informative without all the unnecessary stuff. Thanks.
Wonderully complete. Really appreciate you taking time for re-assembly
could not get my clutch cable out of the handle, your video helped me out in a couple of minutes, thanks for the video, great man !!
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Cable on my 2000 FLSTC just broke on the way in to work. Should have thought to change it several years ago. What a time to not have a smallish pair of visegrips. Gonna be a pain to nurse her home this afternoon but at least I know what I need to do. Great video!
Thanks mate. Saved me a fortune getting it done at HD!
Thanks
great vid man, not many out there that straight forward and to the point, ride on!
Thanks!
Just got done changing my broken clutch cable. No where was there better "in your face" directions on what is needed to do this correctly. The only difference is that my 2007 Electra Glide Classic has stock exhaust with aY at the rear manifold so I had to undo the left side also. No big deal. The only problem I had was fishing the new cable. Just took 2 different tape jobs being the 1st kept getting hung up.
Thanks for the great video. I am now a subscriber!!
Thanks
Thanks for the video, very useful.
Is it absolutely necessary to loosen off the rear cylinder exhaust pipe to gain access to the cover plate ? It's just that loosening the pipe disturbs the exhaust port gasket so that might mean an additional job of resealing the exhaust gas joint.
Does that mean that the lower part of the clutch cable is automatically well lubricated with transmission oil ?
Thank you.
Awesome...Thank man.. Does the Clutch need to be re adjusted at the Cage under the primary afterwards?
How much fluid do you need 1 quart or ???
well done, very detailed, good info, and great camera shots of whats going on if you have never done this before
Top tutorial, very helpful as I've never had to change the cable before. Thank you.
Thanks
Great video. I'm about to replace my clutch. Needed some knowledge before I tackled it. Thank you
Great video, good close-ups and you covered it all. I'm throwin' some 16' apes on today. Your front brake video is great too. Now you need to make one for replacing throttle cables. Thanks!
Thanks
Wow that was an awesome instructional video. You obviously have done this before. Thank you!
Old video but perfectly explained. Thanks a lot
Great video! You're an excellent narrator! Thank you
Thanks for the video. My cover on my 99 fxSpringer has faking chrome. Bought a used one in great shape at my local swap meet. New gasket, oil, manual, and now this video. All that's missing is the beer....lol... Thanks again.
Does the ramp and ball bearings ever go bad or wear out often?
Thanks, great stuff, very good use of the english language, ride on
I have been told you need to adjust your primary after changing the clutch cable. How true is this? It seems simple to do, but just curious. Thanks for this video btw.
The primary chain? I don't know why changing and adjusting the clutch cable would effect the primary.
***** I didn't either. But was told to adjust the jam nut and adjust screw under the cover on the back of the primary. idk.
Thank you for the video. I used it to replace my clutch cable. 😎
you just made my weekend!!! planning on cracking that open tomorrow when i finish my new bar install. thank you sir you are a god!
what if the steel ball not position what will happen?
great video. looking forward to changing my cables after the new bars next week! cheers!
Thanks man, simple and to the point, very helpful.
Question, can't find the answer any where else - I've replaced my clutch cable exactly as shown, however, when I put everything back together, I have no springiness in my clutch - it's nothing but slop. Even when I adjust the cable tensioner it feels more like I'm compressing the clutch cable itself than performing a mechanical disengagement in the clutch / transmission. It almost feels like there is a spring that became unwound or something. I haven't cranked up the bike or changed gears for fear of screwing something up. Any thoughts?
That's the problem I'm having. How did you resolve it?
Mine just broke today on my 2007 FLRT this will help a bunch,Thanks
+Craig Kieffer Thanks for watching!
can transmission oil leak out from the clutch cable outer casing?
Thanks man, I'm planning to replace the handle bars on my fatboy with apes and need to know how to replace the clutch cable
Thanks for watching!
Oldie but nicely done.
You didn’t show the part where you struggle to get the new cable threaded into the cover. 😁
That thread angle is a booger!
Thanks!
I just answered my own question. My new cable has threads on it too like yours.. The nut is just located slightly back on the cable, looked different then the stock so I didnt relize how it worked. I understand now... Thanks for the video again...
I have an 05 dyna low rider. idk if this is normal but I lubricated the clutch cable so there is a smooth action of the clutch. however it seems that there's a lot of tension on the cable. it feels like it wants to pull back out. after a while my hands cramp up. my dad has an 07 super glide and I have no issues with that clutch. I could hold that all day. would there be any way to adjust the tension of the clutch cable? do I need a new cable? I don't have issues with the friction zone at all. it's still a smooth motion of the clutch lever. any thoughts?
thanks
Should we reuse the transmission fluid. Or should we put new transmission fluid in. And how much would that be. I have a 2003 Harley Rd., King
I purchased a new (longer) clutch cable for my new apes and followed your instructional video to change the cable. I have the turn-buckle turned all the way in but I have absolutely no spare cable up at the top to work that cable through the slot on the housing and over that dowel at the hand control end. Did I do something wrong here or did the cable company send me a cable that's too short?
Hi, Very helpful video.
Can you tell me what the Grommet is for in th Harley LE series clutch kit, because Im in the middle of changing the the clutch cable on a Road King 6 speed.
thanks Mick.
Very helpful. I´ll install an Easy Boy on my Softail, this video came in handy, excellent add-on to the service manuals. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. :)
Is this the Same throughout most harleys just learned my clutch cable is actual broken
Hi I’m doing a cable replacement myself I was just curious about something… that piece behind the cover that kinda looks like a gear is that supposed to be connected to something? It seems like it just slides in on mine but I didn’t know if that was correct!
Yet another great video. I may have to do this just to replace the gasket. Developed a small weeping leak after switching to the Harley Snyn3 oil in the transmission. So frustration. At least I hope it's this chrome cover and not the one underneath it :)
Thanks
Thanks for the clip. I've watched and learned from a few of them now. I may have a leak from the plate (bearing door?) under the clutch cable cover, or what the clutch cable cover mounts to? Any tips if I have to replace that gasket?
Additional tip.... Loosen the cable from the clutch housing before you remove the housing less effort to remove.
Hey Bro, thanx for the help, good sharing and easily conveyed. Followed it to the letter and all was good !
" Ride safe and keep the rubber side down "
Jerry
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video LOTS of help!
Great video. Wondering if you have the answer to a question ..... my brother just replaced his clutch cable. He reassembled everything and is having some issues. He took it apart and noticed that the oil slinger (push rod) has a flat side. Does this particular piece have to be inserted in a particular orientation to work properly?
Nothing like clear instructions
Thanks
You forgot to show the most important part. How the heck do you remove the old cable and install the new one through the hole by the clutch handle?
Great video,makes it simple
Thanks for the video! Do you recommend locktite or anti seize on the ends of the bolts on assembly?
Awesome thanks for the Vid!!! Now I know I have to buy the gasket to open the cover!! Thnkx!!
Great video. Showed every step. Quick, slightly unrelated, question for you. The bracket that held your old exhaust. can that be removed? I recently replaced my OE stock exhaust and want to get rid of the OE stock bracket mount if i can.
Thanks for this helpfull video.
Thanks . I need to replace my lever and now I know how to get slack in the cable .
Thanks, I needed this!
just start my bike and pull the lever to engaged in gear cable like snap without any pressure and my clutch doesn t engaged .. what can be the cause i try the adjuster but nothing i can unscrew it completly without moving the lever ...yhanks for your video and answering us .
Great video, I changed my clutch cable and had the inner ramp in on spot to low and could not adjust my cable. I took it back apart and put it where it should be now I have no free play. Safari as I know it's the same cable I had on a previous bike that was the same model. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.
Well edited video, very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to help us!
Thanks
does anybody know: if this is done on a center stand or jack; and the trans oil is NOT drained, will you have any fluid leak out or not? what about if done on the side stand?
What type of trans fluid should i use?
very easy to follow thanks
I have a 2003 ultra classic and I’m changing the exhaust can I get to that exhaust bracket under clutch housing if I remove the housing or do I have to take other parts off to get the bracket off
Very helpful. I gotta replace my cable due to a leak coming from the adjuster, I Recently changed out my levers and when I was messing with the adjuster I realized it was leaking....Its been driving me nuts and somehow the dealer couldn't figure out where this small ass leak has been coming from. They said they didn't see anything even though the whole cable is moist after a short ride.I didn't even know there was oil going through that cable.
Thanks, glad it helped
Great job very thorough 👍
Excellent, thanks for all the tips
is it possible that if you give too much slack that the cable in ball and ramp can foul, while ajusting at lever.?
How long did it take you to install the cable back because it’s no easy task
Well done video, thanks for the info !
I'd have cracked the threaded cable cup before removing the clutch cover, but still a good video, my cable snapped the other day.
I guess you need to take the fairing off to snake the cable through the dash ?
Wont the transmission fluid wash out any grease from the ball ramps?
Good stuff. Kinda had to see it . A visual sort
Brother, this video is a God send. Thanks for your insight. However, I have a 2009 FXDB (street bob). In January I took mini apes off and replaced it with the low vintage type handlebars. Just the other day I started leaking fluid from the junction where the slack is tightened up. Any advice as to how fluid is leaking from there and is there a fix?
Thnx in advance.
Replaced my Shift Shaft seal, upon adjusting the clutch, ended up with additional clutch cable slack that i cannot get out. Can just barley pull clutch lever - feels like it bound up??? 2003 RK Classic. A little help...thx jim
Old Mech Here ! Nice Job . Sir
Peace /;-))) Bottom Of Bike Sure Clean ! /;-)))))
Very good instruction !
Thanks for sharing this great information. GOD BLESS YOU!
Thanks for the video. Im replacing my cable with a longer one and noticed my new cable didnt come with the nut to tighten it at the case.. Does my old cable nut slide off so it can be reused? Thanks again for the video very helpful...
Barney style is going to save me a ton of dough. Thanks for the video. Do we need to do the derby cover too?
Great video, Just follow the video, easy for me. Thanks!
Need help. Did all this but when I put the cover back on it seems the oil slinger is stopping the cable from pulling. Any suggestions
Does it wrong if I detached the cable without disassembled the hole thing?
How much fluid do you add after? How do you know when it's full?
Excellent video. Thanks alot
I know it’s 9 years old but I broke my cable changing a stator. I’ve been worried about jumping in but God hates a Coward. Thanks man.
So I have a 1989 FLHTCU kinda figure it's the same except for the my clutch cable runs through the fairing ??
Thanks for this video. If I want to only lube the clutch cable, do I need to disassemble the whole housing or can I use trans oil on the cable and work it in?
excellent video! nice job! thanks
Great video and well done. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks for watching!
You have any thoughts about the fluid leaking down the clutch cable.
comments from John fever, Brian Kennedy
I too have fluid running down my cable just outside the clutch release cover. Changed the cable o-ring and cover gasket thinking it was one of those, but still have the same issue. You figure out why/where your's was leaking?
CADjunkie209 I noticed my cable leaking and it was rubing against the case and it pinched cable and it leaks out of the cable
Thanks for this info. putting some nice chrome levers on my glide this vid has really helped.
Glad it helped
Great video ! Very Helpful.
