Excellent. My 2000 low rider cable stretched beyond the limit. Just by chance , I found this video. Bought all the parts. One of the easiest things I have done on my bike or auto. Thank You.
Thanks for the video brother. I have an 03 super glide fxd and while I was on the freeway yesterday, I went to shift into 5th gear and the end of my clutch cable (the ring part that the plastic pin goes in on the handlebar lever) broke so I had no clutch lol. All good until I had to stop. It was a bit scary to say the least. Plus I live in Vegas and the people here don't know how to drive lol. I'm not finding to much about this online so I'm glad I came across your video. Also, just fyi, this is one of the best how to videos in my opinion. You should do more. Anyways, thanks again bro. Beautiful bike btw. I have the exact same setup but mine is pearl white. Take care and ride safe.
Great video. I have a 2000 fxd that looks exactly like yours that I need to replace the clutch cable on. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, it helps a lot.
You are a life saver! I’m doing 16 inch bars on my 2000 fxd and this video was the confidence boost I needed to do the clutch cable. Btw my bike is identical to yours. Lol
Personal recommendation is never reuse snap rings- what you called a C clip, but technically is an external snap ring. It's almost impossible to remove them without stretching/deforming them, especially small ones. They are 1/2" I believe and easily found at most hardware store. them.
after adjusting my clutch cable, soon i ride my bike few miles my clutch lever starts to get all wobbly lots of slack and cant change gear what can it be.
I leave the snap rings off my clutch lever pivot pins as the pins don't go anywhere even over many miles and it makes make subsequent cable swaps faster especially if done on the road. If doing a model which requires you remove exhaust components, anti-seize all the threads. You'll thank me later. I push most cover bolts through a piece of cardboard to keep them in order after drawing a crude outline of a gasket with a Sharpie if I'm not immediately reinstalling. The stock throwout bearings are pathetic and widely despised for good reason. This is a perfect time to install a Baker replacement since it's zero extra effort. If you run a heavier clutch spring get the Baker kit. "Baker Throw Out Bearing Kit TBK-56L"
I don;t know about you but if there was a c clip there to begin with, theres going to be one there when I am done. Harley obviously felt the need to put one there... Being a mechanic most my life I understand there are short cuts people use and work in most cases but I am not one to take those short cuts..
Do what you like. I've run that way 31 years so far on multiple HDs. I have no particular faith in HDs judgement (after fixing enough of their screwups, notably Twin Cam tensioner shoes) and I'm a career jet mech. I of course obeyed USAF tech orders (or filed suggestions for changes as appropriate), but cars and trucks are a different beast.
Torque spec is 84 inch pounds to 110 inch pounds. So this is technically the "torque range".........with that said and if you are using an adjustable torque wrench - then your target is 97 inch pounds or 97 In lbs.
my shitty burly brand clutch cable will not thread into my side cover, my oem old cable threads fine in just a couple turns, why is that? any tips at all would be huge
Great video. I have a 2000 fxd that looks exactly like yours that I need to replace the clutch cable on. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, it helps a lot.
Great video. 11 years later. No editing bs and clown school clips.
I have a busted o ring, I gotta go through all this for that one little piece. Sounds like a nightmare until I saw this video. Thanks! 👍🏻

What’s the length of the stock cable. I got 8” bars trying to figure out what length I need
how tall are those risers, and how much did you have to extend each cable
Awesome video brother!

It's worked fine for me since 1988. To each his own.
