I just don't get it someone is kind and willing enough to make a 1 hour video for people to watch and learn, and all some people can do is complain and criticize. If they can make a better one go ahead and do so. I have built hundreds of motors over the years and could not do as good as a job explaining the steps. I originally just wanted to say thanks but then saw all the negative replies. Once again realizing how many ungrateful self centered people are really out there. If it bothers you that much then why do you take the time to watch it and comment. Once again thanks to JP & S&S.
Thanks Chris, i too was going to comment on just how good of a Job the Man gave, while i was watching, i said to myself, WOW this is Classroom quality and for a Mechanic to give info that most keep to them self, this Man went out of his way to do this Video, as for as the Comments, we live in a Hateful, Greedy World to day and this Man set the stage for us to follow, i too now know how blessed i was to have installed a Gear to Gear set in my 02. Again thanks and i was only going to say you are so right, lol.
I've spent the last 20 years as a technical support engineer and technical writer for a large corporation... and this is by far the smoothest, most complete, easiest-to-follow technical presentation I've ever seen. Thank you.
I taught Automotive Mechanics for thirty five years, you are an excellent presenter of material, factual and confident. An excellent teacher makes the difficult look easy. Well done indeed, a natural teacher. God’s Blessings. Sid from Petrolia, Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦
THIS is how youtube works.I have questions, your video had almost an hour worth of answers, for FREE... guess where I'm going to go if/when I'm ready to try this myself? J&P and S&S, because they showed me how to do it, in superb detail. Awesome video.
I am not a mechanic. Therefore i pay a mechanic to work on my bike . this gentleman took the time and patience and illustration on a live job even i could do this for the most part. The most respect and appreciation for this man. By far the best hands on video yet. Thank you .
My 7 yr old GIRL does these menial tasks in the workshop !.. Harleys a basically the same as old petters diesil engines or old massy Ferguson tractors.. All you have to remember is after a full rebuild you shouldn't have any more than 15 spare bolts, 7 spare nuts and 2 spare cogs !... It won't start if you have a spare chain !.. Easy-peasy...
First I want to say a big thank you to Justin and S&S for creating this video. I followed this step-by-step over a year ago, I waited purposely to comment until putting a substantial amount of miles on the bike after the upgrade. Just want to say the performance of the cam is great and I've had no problems whatsoever. I've probably got about three thousand miles on the new cams. I am thinking about doing a top-end upgrade, just the bolt on to take the 88 Cube to about 98 cube without boring cylinders. I was wondering if anybody knows of a video showing that procedure as detailed as this cam upgrade video is. Thanks again for the great video!
I wish they would do a few more videos, this was excellent. I taught electrical theory and hands on at American Motorcycle School and I doubt I was as comfortable or well spoken as Justin. I'm 67 and I rarely make a comment. Thanks to all, well done!
Great video, I’m a retired HD mechanic and this is one of the best videos I’ve seen and I understand the thumbs down,it’s always been like this, what it is it’s people that think they are HD techs they always think they are better which isn’t true but that’s the way it is.
Vid's like this helped me build my motor when I upgraded from 88 to 95. I watched it a number of times. I've wrenched on stuff all my life and manuals are great but never give you the whole picture.
My advice to all the people that are complaining about this video is simple.."Never pass up a great chance to shut the HELL UP". This guy is showing you correctly step by step instructions how to do this installation. If you don't like it, then take it to the Harley dealer and pay the $145/hr labor charge...
This video is badass.I just had this work done at my local Harley dealer with S&S products and the different from stock is unbeliveable.I now understand what work was done.I have been buying S&S products since 1984 with nothing but great performance. Thanks,
This is the most thorough and easy to understand videos I have watched related to cam/rods/lifters. I chose to do the job myself after watching and all went well. Thanks
Good to finally see a guy who knows what his doing upload a great video and the best part of all he respected the bikes owner by not being rough with it. awesome.
I've used S&S equipment on three different Harley's I've owned, and improved the performance of all three doing so!! Good stuff from Wisconsin AGAIN! GO PACK!!
I'm not a Harley owner but thinking of getting one. This is by far the best technical video I've ever seen. My grandma could install a set of Harley cams after watching this video. Good onya mate, well done and thanks for sharing. Subscribed and liked.
I managed the Technical Trainging Departmrent for Boeing corperation and am familiar with training delivery methods and systems. This was a very perfessional and well explained video presentation. I am actully in the process of checking my tensioner on my 2010 Ultra Limited. 57K miles and very little wear on the pad. Good job presenting this information.
I just bought a basket case FLSTS in really deplorable condition. I'm an old gear head from way back but have never had my hands on a Harley Davidson and this resurrection is going to be all me. Thank you J&P! After watching this excellent video, it appears the learning curve is not going to be nearly as steep as I thought it might be.
Question for anybody - my 2003 tc88 (fuel injected - V&H Short Shots exhaust, V&H Naked air cleaner & V&H fuel map) has 22k miles & I want more low end (rpm) torque. Any suggestions on which S&S cams will accomplish this. I'm going inside the cam plate to replace cam chain tenser with hydro tenser & may as well do a cam change while inside. Any suggestions from your experience will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
This is one of the best made, step-by-step, explanation video of how to replace the Cam. Sadly, 90% of "How To" & "DIY" videos lack the appropriate steps, assumes the viewer has done it before, assumes the viewer knows anything beforehand, has music drowning it out or which is inappropriate to the viewing audience and a long list of many other mistakes. Thanks J&P for this video!!!
I agree with a lot of people these videos are very helpful and if you have negative comments please keep them to yourself because these guys are trying to help you with their time and knowledge so THANKS MUCH to S&S and especially to J&P Cycles for their knowledge, experience, and helpful advice and hints to make the job easier for seasoned technicians and the beginners. Like my Dad always told me the dumbest question is the one that's not asked THANKS MUCH S&S AND J&P CYCLES STAY SAFE AND SEMPER FI PAUL.
Don't ever take this video down! I put cams in my 08 Heritage using these instructions and it went smooth as silk. Have never seen a better instructional video, anywhere!
Why are you dummys criticising each other over what BRAND you ride? Shut up, ride together, & fight, together, for the right to enjoy it without government slamming us with regulations/restrictions. It aint about WHAT you ride, it's about taht you do ride. I love my Electra Glide, but I also loved my Guzi, my Honda, My Suzuki, my Yamaha, & every other damn bike I owned. Grow up!
I will say at the outset I am not a big fan of HD products, but I can appreciate watching a good wrench at work. It is a valuable skill to be able to explain what you are doing in a clear and concise manner and give the reason for doing it a set way so that others who are less experienced or skilled to understand it and duplicate what you are doing successfully. Well done..........well done.
Thankyou for taking the time to make this video. I was told by one guy that I should get a gear drive cam, I see now why that in itself can get very complicated if my crank is out of alignment that that engine is, so I'm guessing chain drive is the way to go if I ever deside to do a cam. And with your video, I feel more confident that I can do the job myself, as sofar, I've replaced my stereo, put on bars, and am preparing to take apart my primary. Back when I had my 96" motor I was always afraid I'd fuck something up by working on it myself. But now with my 103" I have lots of support from my local Harley dealer, and some old timers to where I've been attempting to work on my bike, and loving it
WOW......... Great Video, really a Brother doing what he did not have to, NO way could the Video be better, may God bless you in all you do my Brother!!!
WHILE SKIPPING ALL THE BLA BLA BLA, I WILL SUM IT UP QUICKLY....... WHAT AN AWESOME JOB ON THIS VIDEO. PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN. THANK YOU!
Great help!! Thanks a lot for posting this video!!!! I don't get the rude replies...people can disagree with a process or have another opinion. But don't be an ass towards someone you've known only through a video tutorial for crying out loud. Ever try to make a video?? They are A LOT of work. Justin just gave us all a few hundred dollars worth of knowledge! Now I may not do everything exactly like he did. But I respect all the time he gave to pass along this teaching. And I would be confident in doing this job on my bike. THANKS! Thanks JP Cycles! Hope to see you in Anamosa this year.
The video is so perfectly narrated, demonstrated and photographed that I feel completely confident to do this on my bike but I know better! There is a difference between professionals and hacks, I am in the last group.
Awesome video. Jason, you are great at explaining the things that are useful to know, and the camera angles made it all very clear. THANKS for taking all the time it takes to make a great video like this, thousands of people are going to benefit from your efforts.
We understand the price of the tool is higher than a hobbyist or backyard mechanic may be able to afford. Unfortunately, there are no lower priced alternatives available.
If a person keeps a bike for years and runs up 100,000 miles they will need these tools at least twice. Mine is a 2000 twin cam and it will need the cam tensioners replaced to prevent metal from getting into the engine. I will probably swap to a gear drive cam next time around.
Yes, but there may be rental options. And even if you did have to buy it, it's still cheaper than the labor charge the dealer would charge you to do the job. And you could always resale the tool later to recoup large portion of the cost.
Niiice… I realize this is 13 years down the road😄 … but I wanted to thank you indeed for making this video. I’m 62 and I’m looking to get my 1st harley… a 2009 night train and if it doesn’t already have the stage ll on it that’s one of the first things I want to do…along with the stage l of course. May the Lord bless you and thanks so much for the video.
The haters are the prima donna mechanics that can't stand the fact that someone can wrench on their own scoot. When I was coming up we weren't afraid to tear something apart in the garage and learned a great deal helping others on their bikes. Nowadays some guys aren't confident enough in their abilities to change oil or plugs and wires let alone an in depth yet easy job such as a cam swap. Maybe someone will attempt something on their own because of this video and stop perpetuating that only Harley certified mechanics are able to do anything at all on a bike. Thank you for sharing your skills, knowledge and tips with the world.
This is an outstanding instructional video. I am fairly mechanically inclined and this video almost gave me enough confidence to do my cam upgrade myself. But because of warranty ramifications I let the dealer do it. But I most definitely have a 1000% better understanding of what it takes to do it. Highly recommended!
I am very honored to be able to watch the video and also very grateful for the time you had to show us the procedures, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Excellent video! I've changed many cams out, but you showed a couple of tricks that just made it easier and faster! I appreciate you taking the time making this video.
I've held a shifter assembly in place using a rolled up playing card that I frayed at the ends(1 month like that) on a 90 katana, then on a 2000 rebel held my brake together with a paper clip, on many bikes I've held mirrors in place with paper clamps, used pliers as foot pegs, so much rigging I've done i couldn't believe it when i watched him cut those rods out and use a paper clip while working on this bike. I am impressed.
The more I see about these twin cam motors the more I appreciate the Shovlehead. I bought a 2002 FLSTC it is my first Harley newer than my 72 FLH. I have a wrecked 01 Road king I was going to rebuild but I think I will try to trade it for a good shovelhead. That lifter is like the shovlehead hydraulic lifter.
This guy is the BEST! Did a total top end Cam's inner bearings it's, also complete primary drive and hp clutch, gaskets etc. Why pay a fortune when you can have the satisfaction of doing it yourself 👍👍✌️Best videos and mechanic #1
I know this video is almost 10yrs old, but it is still the most informative instruction video on changing twin cams. Well filmed, and easy to follow. Thank you.
This is one of the most useful videos I've seen regarding engine work. Thank you JP Cycles for putting this together. As the owner of a TC-88 with 60K miles, I know the time is near where I'll need to do this kind of work on the bike. Thanks!
I am getting ready to install cams, lifters and adjustable push rods in my Road Glide. I've watched this video a couple times and Fuel Moto's videos a couple times. I have all of my parts from Fuel Moto and am ready to start my installation. I don't know how much easier you could make a cam install. Both J&P and Fuel Moto do a wonderful job and I fully appreciate their help and expertise. Adjustable push rods will make my life easier and if I decide to do a big bore kit and remove my heads, the adjustable push rods will stay. Randy
Just back from Sturgis. Met a biker with a 2003 TC88 Elctra Glide exactly like mine. Over the years he replaced the engine and converted to gear drive. Then I saw the odometer... 489000 miles. (The bike looked like it too)
Great video this guy takes his time in explaining proper procedure as well as guidance for newer mechanics or civilians that want to do the work themselves . Great job
Great Video!!! The best part was at the end when he explained how you can find the top and bottom and set that lifter adjustment dead center without knowing anything about thread count and/or brand. I must thank the the Brother who passed that knowledge to me many years ago who now rides with the Forever Chapter, R.I.P. " Arsenal" you are missed by many. and again great Video
I have 30 years as a Harley Tech (factory trained on first gen Evo's) and this is a great video...however, he forgot to mention putting in the new O-Ring push rod cover seals BEFORE you install the pushrods and covers....Just keep this in mind if you're attempting this on your own (pro tip). Great video JP Cycles.
Outstanding instructions, really well done and a pleasure to watch and learn. Editing is nicely done, sound is perfect ... I ride an Evo but there's so much great general shop info here it is well worth watching by anyone who wrenches. Thank you S&S and J&P!
I had a set of SE 254e cams installed by the dealer. I wanted so badly to know what the inside of my bike looked like. This video was awesome for me personally. Not that I will ever take on a project of this stature, but now the 8 year old child in me is now completely satisfied... BTW, the 254e cams are awesome in my opinion. The race tuner that comes with it is awesome as well... Keep posting cool vids for us owners who have an 8 year old living inside that just wanna know... Thanks again!!!!!
Wow! Amazingly detailed video, explained slowly so that even a dunce like me can understand it. I don't have all the needed tools to do this (yet) but I have confidence that I could probably replace my cams if I did it slowly and carefully. I'm a little hazy on a few points so it would be nice to have an experienced person looking over my shoulder but... I no longer feel that this project is just completely over my head. Well done!
I know this is an old video but seriously how creepy is the fact that I have been thinking of doing a CAM Shaft upgrade on my 2005 Harley Davidson Fatboy, never searched anything on it never mentioned it out loud and magically this video shows up in my feed. 12 yrs old video but just Fantastic!!!!
I was hoesntly dumbfounded that cutting push rods was a thing... But I get why and I fully understand that unless motor is needed to be pulled it would be worth it but Thanks for explaining why I was lost there for a sec. Great Video TY!
I watched this video and with very few tools replaced my tensioners I've never had any training and got thru it no sweat.. thank you for an in depth and easy to understand video
Wow! Although this project was quite comprehensive and technical, it was a very well articulated step-by-step video. I'm very impressed with both the mechanical skills and production of this video. It clearly conveys to its audience, the proper requirements and recommendations needed for such a job with intrinsic detail. Well done, folks!
Nothing wrong with a set of adjustable pushrods. Otherwise pulling the entire rocker box new gaskes and lifting the tank is involved. You'll never have a problem with the adjustables
I'm a halfway decent auto mechanic and I'm buying a 2006 Electra Glide with a twin cam that's gonna need some work so I wanted to familiarize myself with the internal workings of the twin cam motor and I have to say that this is a fantastic tutorial. Thanks for taking the time. I really feel like I can successfully rework the motor on my bike. Thanks
I should not have bitched about this post without having an alternative way of doing this. I just assumed you all would figure it out. So to do this without cutting the push rods you will have to take the rockers off. This is easy to do it just takes more time. On the rear cylinder one of the rocker bolts will hit the frame and will not come out. So you take a bolt out of the top motor mount and pry the motor over in it's rubber mount's with a crow bar and it will come out. This way cost me $140. for the new cam chain tensioner's and about $50 for the tool. Do every thing this fine mechanic doe's only don't cut the rods, take the rockers off . No adjustment is needed. Put it back together the same way it came apart. DO NOT MIX UP THE PUSH RODS ONE IS SHORTER! wait there are 4 so 2 are shorter. Do not turn the motor over while it is apart! This way you use the stock rods and you don't have to adjust anything. I didn't even buy new gaskets there was nothing wrong with the old one's. This was easier for me. For this mechanic time is money and he can adjust a push rod in his sleep. For the amateur adjusting a push rod can be hard. Once you have it apart you can go to a hydraulic or gear drive or just put the stock ones back in. Both of these way,s will work but neither is the right way. The RIGHT WAY goes like this. Take the crank out have it welded, plugged and trued. Then put a gear drive in her and run the shit out of it because it is now bullet proof. It would have been nice if Harley would have trued the crank at the factory but that cost's more money. It's cheaper just to press the crank together send it out the door with a wobbling crank and let us fix them.
+fredmagee I agree, don't cut the pushrods.. in my case, my '02 Electra glide, I wanted to remove tank, rockers & related stuff to change out my 'spring loaded tensioners' why? Harley has a lot of upgraded gaskets, fuel hoses, breathers & few other parts that I could replace along the way... my total cost was around $250-$300. oh yea, I bought the same tensioners b/c this bike probably won't see another 20k miles!
I bought a 66 sportster, It was slow, and vibrated horibley was a night mare to work on. I got rid of it in 72, I have road nothing but Kawasaki street bikes and yamaha dirt bikes ever since. Why pay twice as much money for a slow vibrater ??????
Great technical video dude. I know a lot about vehicles but not so much about motorcycles and at least I know what needs to be done to change out a cam. Not ready to do it myself but now I have a complete informed understanding of what I am talking about.. thanks
bloodyBill not sure I understand question.. But if your are talking about the cam install on stock H-D; I believe you meant you have gear driven cams and not belt driven cams. Off the show room models should have chain driven cams. I know the gear driven cams can not have crank with too much run out, but chain driven cams can have slightly more
This is my first twin cam engine . learning all i can about them .2004 wide guild and i love this bike . But then again i loved all my Harleys even the AMF ones , not as much but lol

Good one for sure !
Cam plate should be upgraded as well, the stock harley one is junk. Along with the pump....
I agree! Best video yet
Holy crap!! Who ever knew that so much was involved in this process. I'll never question a mechanic ever again!!

As Norman Teck stated this is a very well done video with exceptional step by stop explanatory commentary . Thank you. By far the best I have seen.
Great job by Justin (S & S) and JP Cycles, gave me enough info so that I can now proceed with the replacement of the cam chain tensioners.

Thank you for this important information, you are the best and I can find the best information on this article
This video has helped me 9 years after it was made, very detailed and extremely helpful.
Thank you J&P Cycles and S&S for sharing this!
It gives confidence in tackling a project like this, very interesting!
J&P Cycle rocks been a member for over 8 years now.
Thank you for sharing your skills, knowledge and tips with the world.
...this video...i remember when it first came out...Certainly has stood the test of time.
Out of pure morbid curiosity, what was the dealership labor cost?
I am very honored to be able to watch the video and also very grateful for the time you had to show us the procedures, thank you, thank you, thank you.
The best how-to video I have ever seen. Thank you. I will be back to jpcycles .
Best cam replacement vid on the Internet bar none. Woulda like to have heard it run with the newer cam though.
An excellent instructional video. The instructor and videography are top notch. It makes me believe that I could do this project. Thanks !!
I know this video is almost 10yrs old, but it is still the most informative instruction video on changing twin cams. Well filmed, and easy to follow. Thank you.
Super nice work and easy to follow presentation style. I applaud you sir.
This is one of the most useful videos I've seen regarding engine work. Thank you JP Cycles for putting this together. As the owner of a TC-88 with 60K miles, I know the time is near where I'll need to do this kind of work on the bike. Thanks!
Thanks so much both J&P Cycles & SyS for this very detailed video. Im a 100% to the good on now having a decent grasp on doing my own cams
Great job
Well done! Great job walking us through. Thank you!
Shoulda fired it up at the end. Very educational video though! Thanks for posting! :-)
This Mechanic is top notch and easily understood. Thanks for the awesome instruction and keep them coming, really helps us self fix garage guys.
Great presentation, Would have been nice to hear him fire it up though.
That was really interesting and I learned a lot.
Thanks a bunch Justin...honest.
Awesome video Sir ! just straight knowledge with style AND NO BULLSHIT music, thankyou very much for your professionalism
Thanks for taking the time to make such an informative video.
Followed this video step by step in 2012 with Woods 555's. 40k + miles later and still going. Great tuturial👍👍
Very happy to pay 6 hrs. Labor to the local bike shop
, I like to get a little greasy changing the oil in the 3 holes, but this job is a bit much.
I’ve watched this several times before installing the S&S 551 complete cam kit on my flstf 103. Thank you for your time.
Wish I had his knowledge 👍he can work on my ultra limited anytime
Well done!
Well that just wiped out all my intimidation. I'm Going in . Thanks a lot. great video!
This guy is very informative.
Great tutorial, I wish I could have done my apprenticeship with someone who was so concise. Your a 1st rate teacher
Thanks for the amazing video. I appreciate that these videos can be hard to do.
One of the best how-to videos I've seen. Well done.
Great video. I'm thankful that it's free!
I used this video on my 05, absolutely made the upgrade a breeze watching this video thank you.
This guy is great, I only wish I had his knowledge.
Keep watching!
I was hoesntly dumbfounded that cutting push rods was a thing... But I get why and I fully understand that unless motor is needed to be pulled it would be worth it but Thanks for explaining why I was lost there for a sec. Great Video TY!
Thanks for such a great Vid..... I'm doing research on Cam upgrades and this was very well done.. thanks again... Perfect instructional video....
one of the clearest and informative videos i have ever seen. Excellent quality. Cheers
Awesome Video!! I learned a lot. This will save a lot of time and money. Thanks for posting it!!
I watched this video and with very few tools replaced my tensioners I've never had any training and got thru it no sweat.. thank you for an in depth and easy to understand video
Awesome job! Very clear. You know your stuff!
Why pay twice as much money for a slow vibrater ??????
because harleys are cruisers not drag bikes or dirt bikes.
fredmagee exactly right!
Great technical video dude. I know a lot about vehicles but not so much about motorcycles and at least I know what needs to be done to change out a cam. Not ready to do it myself but now I have a complete informed understanding of what I am talking about.. thanks
The guy knows his art.
I fixed my twin cams tensioner for good I sold both of them and bought a 98 Fatboy Evo. Problem solved. This is a very good video none the less.
You're awesome dude- thanks for posting this! I am working on this now! ;)
This video helped me last week; recently installed S&S 585 easy Start cams in my bike
SBMC Baker Belt or chain ? wondering because Im belt drive , he made a point about the dif but didnt go into it much round 28;20
bloodyBill not sure I understand question.. But if your are talking about the cam install on stock H-D; I believe you meant you have gear driven cams and not belt driven cams. Off the show room models should have chain driven cams. I know the gear driven cams can not have crank with too much run out, but chain driven cams can have slightly more
Got it , Thats what i was asking bout , wasnt sure of the dif between the two . Thanks too , learned how the cam my twin cam lol
This is my first twin cam engine . learning all i can about them .2004 wide guild and i love this bike . But then again i loved all my Harleys even the AMF ones , not as much but lol
