I’m seeing Deep Purple with Ian still on vocals in two weeks time in Manchester. Unfortunately he can no longer sing this song. But his voice is still pretty good for his age. Check out their latest album.
The Unholy Trinity: as they were called. Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple. In the US, Sabbath and Ozzy are adored, Zeppelin were (to be fair) sexy and diverse. Purple, my band. were just the best live act you'd ever see. And most of they're albums are golden. Sabbath and Zeppelin are superb, but there is only one Purple. (I may be very biased)
You put five greatly gifted and talented musicians amazing lyrics and you end up with a masterpiece of a song! This was recorded in 1970 on live tv (audience were instructed to keep quiet because this was recorded). My favourite song of all time (can never get sick of it)!!!
This song is from Deep Purple In Rock, which was followed by Fireball, then Machinehead. In the Copenhagen show you reacted to, they were touring Fireball and adding Machinehead songs that weren’t yet released. Others have suggested the live album Made In Japan , made on the Machinehead tour, which incorporates the best of all three albums.
@@BirgittHGer I saw 84 reunion tour 3 nights in a row and 87 HoBL tour 2 nights in a row. I think House of Blue Light doesn't get a fair hearing. Perfect Strangers Nobody Perfect I was there I think best recorded version
Deep Purple was the greatest collection of talent in rock. Check out Highway Star and Space Truckin. Also, an earlier song called April. It's a beautiful mix of rock and classical music.
I was 9 years old at the time, America was just ending the civil rights era and the 60's hippie movement and there was the Vietnam War going on which was on the news everyday giving us the governments take on it. Then there was songs like this (kinda like a protest to the war) and at 9 years old I grew up understanding what life was really about! My step-father just come back home from Vietnam and he gave me an album of Deep Purple called Live in Japan and my life was changed and I became a drummer and my LOVE of music began!! Gosh, now at 63 years old I miss this type of music...
Great reaction to this iconic performance....I love this song, even though I dont love Ian s high vocal screaming I am floored(cause you said floored ;-) ) by it every time I hear it. Deep Purple influenced generations of Rock and Metal Bands... Thx for reacting
Not playing perfectly is a big part of Rock music. Of course there is perfected Rock music too. But rawness is the essence. Mistakes are good. Perfection can lead to boredom. And by the way, it's a Hammond organ.
You should do Strange Kind of Woman from their live Made in Japan album. It features a call and response section between Ian Gillan on vocals and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. How they match each other note for note is phenomenal. There is no video of the performance but the following link is mashup using video from another show in Copenhagen eith the audio from Made in Japan… ua-cam.com/video/8bDF5H0aYkk/v-deo.html
Another classic from Deep Purple!! If you like Ian Paice's vocals, then you will also enjoy the song Strange Kind Of Woman, from the Made In Japan album, 1972!! Ian on vocals and Ritchie Blackmore on guitar go back and forth with each other!! But back in these few years here, all 5 band members were at the top of their game, they knew how to jam !! Yeah, I know, I got them mixed up, excuse me , I was drinking when I watched this ok!!
Deep purple is the favorite band of some of the greatest bands/musicians in metal. Whitesnake and Dream Theater have whole albums of just Deep Purple covers. Malmsteen is a super fan too and has covered Ritchie Blackmore dozens of songs. Deep purple is arguably the greatest band in rock
@ well if your speaking of the living ones Eric Clapton, Victor the Guitar Nerd, Kurt Lee Hammett, and David Gilmore. I should say in MHO maybe 🤔 I listed them in no particular order. They are all legendary artists!
Space Truckin, Pictures of Home, Fireball, Speed King, Flight of the Rat, Rat Bat Blue, Woman From Tokyo, Place in Line, Perfect Strangers, Smoke on the Water ( if you haven't heard it ) From their later years; Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Time For Bedlam, Lazy Sod, Nothing at All Then with Coverdale/Hughes on vocals Burn, You Fool No One, Dealer, You Keep on Movin, Drifter
Nice reaction ,Thanks 👍Yes this was the real hard rock work of the early seventies. It was until 74 that they released good albums. Then things started to change. The singer Ian Gillan and guitarist Richie Blackmore had conflicts and Gillan left the band. but came back later and many changes followed! I'd like to see "highway star live" next🤘ua-cam.com/video/7zKAS7XOWaQ/v-deo.html
You should really listen 'Made In Japan' album. In that concert you can really hear the Ian Gillan and Richie Blackmore voice match which is especially fired up by Jon Lord. I hope and wish their names will live forever as it should be.
As far as Jon Lord is concerned: he was educated as a classical musician and it shows ... If that resonates with you, check out his solo work "Sarabande"
13:38 you just turned your head, but didn't hear it either.. 😅 like you said, this is pretty much what perfection in musical form sounds like; you can't hear the "mistakes", because even though Paice dropped one of his sticks (funny enough at a very slow passage), he literally didn't even skip a beat! ;D
This is a riff Deep Purple ripped off from a song called Bombay Calling by a band called Its A Beautiful Day, much as Smoke on the Water riff, is a rip of a bossa nova by Carlos Lyra. Unlike Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple was always upfront about the music they stole.😮
I like your critique, that is why I am now following you. I don’t know your background but I have been playing guitar for over many years more than before you were born. Ian was the 1st to perform in the Broadway and in London the musical Jesus Christ Superstar and he was Jesus. Then became the Jesus Christ superstar on film but yes, I enjoy your comments very professional.
Actually, Ian only recorded on the 1970 concept album. He never starred in the musical, anywhere. They wanted him for the first movie (released in 1973), but he was committed to a Deep Purple tour. Deep Purple at the time was huge. It is reported that he told the movie producers that he would only consider the role if the producers paid Deep Purple and all their staff for their lost revenue. This wasn't possible, so they found Ted Neely to do the role. Ted continued by playing the role on stage. If you want to hear Ian in the role, look for "1970 Gethsemane". It is a much simpler song than Child in Time, so some people prefer it. It is more accessible. To hear Ian Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore trade notes, listen to a live version of "Strange kind of Woman". To hear Ian's lower register, which is also quite amazing, look for his version of "No More Cane on the Brazos". This was either a solo or with his band called "Gillan", I can't remember. Deep Purple was the first band to meld classical with hard rock. My personal name for their style is "hard prog-rock" King Crimson is another band that did this, but they were a year or two later. When Greg Lake left King Crimson, he formed a progressive rock band with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. You should listen to "Karn Evil 9" by Emerson Lake and Palmer to hear quintessential progressive rock. Like Jon Lord of Deep Purple, Keith Emerson had a very strong classical keyboard background. BTW, Ian Gillan had a male family member (maybe an uncle) who was an opera singer. As a (not very accomplished) singer myself, I have always been amazed by his skills. His voice did change during his time away from Purple and became more nasal. I seem to remember something about a tonsillectomy or other throat surgery, so maybe that was the reason. But I don't know. He still has a decent voice -- not many hard rock singers can say that when they are almost 80 years old. I was lucky enough to see Deep Purple Mark II (the line up from 1969 through 1973, what you see here) twice. I saw "Gillan" twice also. Never saw "Rainbow". I saw "Whitesnake" practice for a tour. I just happened to stay in their hotel and someone invited me to watch. I think that is it for me re: bands associated with Deep Purple.
I hope that gen Z will understand by listening to groups like Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Supertramp, Cream, that 60 year old guys like me can't stand the shitty music that we are currently playing.
It's not vibrato. He's pulsing those notes. A very special deep purple track. They refused to release it as a single although it features on a few albums.
Ian Gillan is not screaming OKAY! He’s got (well he had….not young anymore) one of those vocal ranges not many singers have! Ian was the original Jesus Christ in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
Child in Time is one of my favorite songs by Deep Purple. Ian Gillan (sp) was not the original singer in Deep Purple. Kentucky Woman and Shades are 2 good songs by the original lead singer. I prefer Ian Gillan as lead singer. Even the studio version of Child in Time is just plain heaven.
Look at how the audience is dressed ..........Yikes. reminds me of the black and white videos of Zeppelin in 68 and 69 ,the guys are dressed in skinny black tie and white shirt and crew cuts.......LOL
Since this was a live recording in a BBC studio during a period when sound quality wasn't great, the audience was told not to move or make sound. At least, this is what some audience members have reported. But still, this was very avant garde for the time, so some probably didn't get it. In the actual Deep Purple concerts I saw from 1971 to 1973, the audience was very into it. Deep Purple could just jam and it sounded great.
