I did similar also added the rvs 3x zoom thermal sigjt on the rail. And made the stock collapsable The wider mag size looks more realisitic and this has grown on me as how a real m41a should look.
So no one really knows this but the matrix airsoft pulse rifle parts will bolt right up to an auto ordnance m1a1 all you have to do is register it as an SBR and working pulse rifle. The plastic parts can be reinforced from behind the shell with jb weld or something for added rigidity but honestly its good enough as is.
Very cool. I got one of the Pulse Rifles awhile ago but haven't got around to trying to mod it as I hadn't found any great guides yet. This is the kick in the pants I need to get it done and seeing you do it should make it simple.
I keep rewatching this video in anticipation of repainting my own. This would be my first repaint and I’m a bit nervous. You make it look really easy though. Great work!
I repainted mine, but to get it painted well I opened it up cut the wires figuring I'd solder it back together soon. It is much easier to paint in pieces. That was a year ago. But the paint job looks amazing!
I bought three. Took them apart to repaint as well. Mine turned out amazing, I put one on ebay and sold it for $350. Basically got 2 free pulse rifles plus $50.
Painting props is one of my fav parts of the process and you didn't disappoint. I love that you also practice gun safety (even though it is a Nerf gun). Is a good mindset to have regardless.
The pulse rifle came out AMAZING!!! Your painting process is complex and I've been trying to emulate it for ages. I'm still a novice but learning the art of many many layers. You have at least doubled if not tripled the amount of paint I use in all my props. But they are the better for it. I hopped on Amazon looking for a pulse rifle of my own. Ouch. Think I'll wait until I find one in a thrift store or yard sale somewhere. Thank you for being such an amazing teacher, Steve!
Thanks Rex, I’m glad that I have this platform to help and inspire other artists! And it makes me happy to know how many I have influenced in the cosplay / maker community
This is incredible. I have been putting off doing this to mine because I really didn’t know how to make it look good. This tutorial is fantastic. I will definitely be doing it to mine.
Awesome work, I mean completely blown away by how good it looks. I got myself the Nerf gun a while ago and I wish I had even a shred of the talent you do, but between no artistic talent and some pretty shaky hands, I would never be able to undertake the process on my own without likely screwing it up. Still though amazing work .
I always heard Nerf guns were a pain to paint, mainly because spray paint rubs right off that plastic. I guess that's where the self etching primer comes in. The acid in that probably welds the paint right to the plastic!
Yeah it def helps but the paint still can rub off with enough force. that is also why I didn't overdo the weathering right now. any paint that does come off during a con can be covered up with the metallic silver in the future
As a nerf modder and prop maker that regularly uses nerf guns as a base, they're actually really easy to paint so long as you prep the surface. All that entails is really just washing off any grease or oil from your hands and taking a green scratchy pad to the surface. The builds I do are made for and used at a full contact post apocalyptic LARP and have held up for years. The high points and friction areas will obviously scrape off eventually but that's an easy fix with a silver sharpie.
Great video; I wish I'd bought one of these back when they came out. Scalpers are reselling this Nerf gun for 2x or even 3x the original MSRP. At this point it's better to just buy the Evike airsoft M41A instead
Very nice, I've reapinted a couple of Nerf guns before, it's a fun process. I use very similar techniques but one thing I do differently is I don't apply much silver. What I do instead is to paint the entire thing with a silver base coat. Then after the main colors have been applied, I'll go over the areas where I want the silver to show with a piece of 0000 steel wool. I feel that this technique is very good for stimulating the look of paint having been gradually worn off over time as popped to beingchipped off.
What's the ratios of Mars Black : Burnt Sienna : Water? You mention the mixture for the handle has 'less water' than the mixture for the body, but didn't mention how dilute either really is. Thanks!
Washes are over 60% water to break up the binding medium of the pigment. The handle just has enough water added to make the paint flow a little bit more than right out of the tube.
It looks great, but I'm curious: You spend a lot of time sanding off off the raised writing, adding texture to the grip, etc, but you leave all the screw holes. Why? Is it in case you need to take it apart in the future to fix the Nerf firing mechanism? If it's only going to be used for cosplay, I'd think you'd want to fill in the holes to make it look as real as possible.
I don't know if this helps but I found a paint that is supposed to emulate the Brown Bess that is no longer in production. It's by an Australian company called Scale Modeller and the paint is called Blaster Brown. It is an acrylic lacquer (so it's flammable) and it's made for airbrush application. I got a bottle for my own Aliens project but I haven't had the chance to try it out yet.
Any chance you would be able to do Darth Revans chest armor and helmet? Hes a character I’ve been DYING to bring to life and I think you’d do a great job at it!!!
Doubt it. The metallic spray paint dried almost instantly. Rub n buff is wax based and can continue to smear before it dries and it also doesn’t provide crisp edges
@@Prae7orian nope, just because you’re not adding much paint to the surface using primers and graphite. It’s not like adding thick acrylics just washes. Everything still works fine and the graphite actually helps the parts move better

Does the graphite powder come off to the touch over time? Do you normally seal that in with anything?
Most of it won’t after you buff and remove the excess but I mentioned it in the video near the end you can seal it with a fixative spray
