The timing of this video was scary- because i was just feeling extremely burnt out about the comic i was working on, "the plot isn't interesting enough" , "it sounds like someone else's story ", "am i plagiarising" , these were some thoughts that were going on in my head. But yeah- nothing ever completely original, there are references everywhere, so don't fear to use them too!

I feel like that's a necessary step for all creative activities. Everything starts off as learning from other people's work, and it's no coincidence that the work we create is similar to what we see from other's work (cause you literally learned from them). It will most likely be a mashed potato salad of all of the things we learn, at the beginning, at least.
I also think the people have this obsession of being "original". Being original is cool and all if you already know a lot about your field of creation, but I always struggled by it when I tried to learn something new. Because I didn't have any expertise to create something original while I had desire to create one. That, for me, was another big barrier of learning.
I think the only way to overcome this in a mature manner is to take that into your account. Understanding that the outcome of my work could be bad or straight up plagiarised. And focus not on the one work that you created right now, but also comparing that to yesterday's work of your own and see how much you improved.

Never apologize for taking references! take Joker for example, you could say it's a rip off from taxi driver yet it won an oscar and people love it in pop culture now. Nothing is new, if you put your own spin then it's no longer plagiarising.

Theres an exercise called the paperclip trick. Take something from your surrounding, and come up with 20 uses for the item.
This is based off the paperclip experiment. Which you should look up! This is a GREAT warm up, and if youre an artist draw the item in perspectives, If youre an engineer, come up with a new way to use a paperclip. If youre a musician, pick a basic score, and sing from your brain.
Remember that a blank sheet is dangerous, so draw a dot and get started, because a blank page is worthless, ideas are valuable.

I think a lot of people have the mentality that creativity is some miracle that falls from the sky because of how much stuff exists in the modern day. In terms of concepts, stories, tropes, etc humanity has explored so many angles over millennia so it can often feel that whatever we come up with pales in comparison to what already exists. Why write a story that follows a hero's journey that's played out 100s of times, draw a character that shares characteristics with thousands of others, create things that people may very well end up creating to a better quality than yourself. As somewhat of a more 'logical' person these thoughts used to weigh me down since I missed in my childhood whenever I'd just sit down and create things no matter how shoddy or unoriginal. But I always think about the psychological schema: how our brains essentially find shortcuts to understanding the world around us. For example for a chair ur brain might think: four legs, a place for sitting, has a place for ur back etc. Fundamentally speaking all chairs are the same in a sense, since they're designed with the same purpose and yet look around and you'll find a whole range of chairs of different sizes, shapes materials etc. Obviously I oversimplified the concept and maybe I could have picked a better analogy but the point is that each chair is distinct and if u were to make ur own ideal chair you'd take aspects from the ones you like. Basically, its okay to 'borrow' aspects from things we like and reshape them to be our own, because that's how we understand the world in the first place. You can't make something from nothing.
Also iteration is key. Coming back to first drafts and ideas after searching for new information is what can elevate a decent idea to a phenomenal one.

This is exactly the issue I'm having currently.
I'm in a very big class of graphic designers and illustrators when all I do is small doodles on the corners of my page. I want to get better but I see and compare my art to the other students and it's crushing seeing how far behind I am drawing. I started to say I'm not creative, that I have nothing special that can pop out from the crowd, but my friends point out that I'm incredibly creative. They pointed out the music videos I've done, the videos, and visual effects I've done, and they've all told me I am creative in my own special niche.
I am creative.. I have lots of cool ideas, but I'm not as good at drawing as I am at filming to let my creativity flow.
I made a mistake taking the art class, but I'm staying because being good at art would insanely help me with directing future projects.

p good advice tbh, especially the idea that we need inspiration from other sources in order to come up with something unique or interesting ourselves, i like to just scroll through pint rest and collect a bunch of refences and start drawing whatever i see and it's quite fun combining and experimenting, i even look at things i never considered before like fashion! which has helped me a lot with coming up with ideas. It's tiny things like these that help build up your mental library, even simple things like watching movies, looking at picture books observing our surroundings, might seem simple but all theses things really help in the long run.

This is one of the things you need to hear from time to time. I’m a huge believer in the fact that there is no talent, just incredibly hard work. But, even then, I fall into the trap of saying “I’m not creative enough”. As a video editor, I know it is incredibly harmful to think that way, and yet I still do it.
Also, another thing that Josh pointed out, that idea of comparing your art (or whatever it may be, frankly) to one of your peers and thinking you could never do that because you’re not creative enough. I’m also incredibly guilty of that, and on a daily basis.
Thank you for this video, because I really think I needed to hear this from someone else :D

  • @suzume_artz

Thank you for creating this series! It's so important to give time to yourself for creativity. There's a stage about this called Incubation in the Creative Thinking Model (ICEDIP). I was feeling a kind of void when I finished an artwork recently, wondering if I have enough creative energy to plan for another concept artwork. Being busy with college (CS Engineering heh) actually helped me take my mind off drawing for a while & now whenever I take a break from studying for exams now, new ideas just pop into my head like Eureka moments & I can imagine it way better than before!
All this made me realise that Art is a part of me & no matter how lost I feel for new ideas, my inner creativity will always remind me to be myself & create works that can hopefully communicate & inspire others in the future too.

Love is the only thing that matters. When you *lovingly* put your attention into something, you naturally 'get better' at --- surprise surprise surprise --- lovingly putting your attention into that thing (this can be interpreted as 'creative' or 'talented' or being in 'flow' but ultimately those words are meaningless). If you create from any other place other than love it'll feel like a struggle. And if it feels like a struggle you're simply practicing *against* the only skill that matters - lovingly putting your attention into something.

For me creativity can be found in constraints. When you have a clear defined goal and only your available knowledge and skills at your disposal the outcome of what you produce will be unique to you. This can also be applied when thinking imaginitively as specificity allows your to compare and contrast against a set ideas. I believe going through this process really grounds your own thought process and allows us to think out of the box when there is no box to begin with

At 9:10, you mention ArtStation, Instagram, and DeviantArt (with Pinterest in the "links below"). I have Twitter and DeviantArt for my artwork, but never got IG or ArtStation. I have the most connections on Facebook, but rarely go on there, since it's not where I am connected to other artists. Lastly, since you are on UA-cam and Twitch, I would ask if you recommend doing time lapse art as a beginner, braving the no-viewers-on-Twitch, or how you feel about TikTok for small doses of art. Also, I'm not an Apple fan, so I use Clip Studio Paint on a Surface, but I imagine this series is more about the creativity aspect, and less specific to the tools being used. Looking forward to it. I think I just need to experience more in life before I can truly express anything and that's what I've been doing. The more experience you have in life the better your artistic expression is. A lot of you guys and gals are just like I was. On the internet all the time. And I think it's good to take a step back and enjoy your life a bit more instead of staring at a screen or a piece of paper for the whole day. I say put down not only your phone but also the pencil and take a bus somewhere really far. Or work hard at something you care about to get a meaningful result. I'm just so at peace right now, maybe the youtube comments section isnt the best place to put this but I've truly found what makes me happy. It's life. I don't wanna spend all my time on the internet anymore. I'm gonna make the real world something worth living to me. :)

Creativity IS both talent and hard work! Can everyone draw? No! You can be creative by nature but you just don't have the talent for drawing. Years ago when I started my hobby animal art and was in my plaster of paris phase, a person I knew said anyone can can do what you do! What's so hard! Anyone can put in an animal miniature, plants and the like. So I said great! YOU try it! Well she failed miserably. I got out of that phase because I never got the water plaster right. Too watery, too dry, wasting more than I used. I tried something else on the same animal theme. Is it talent or creativity to find the right animal figure or picture? Is it talent or creativity to find the right base? Talent or creativity to know where to put things. Hard work deciding those, creativity to think of it, and talent making your idea work. If art wasn't talent AND hard work prefecting it, everyone could do it. I went through a short story phase. Creativity for the serial idea. Talent in that writing comes easy to me, hard work making characters, scenes and how my characters spoke and inventing a language, real. Talent helps. Creativity helps, hard work perfecting something so it looks easy is another thing. Those who object to talent are mostly those who've never done art as a serious hobby or a job.

Creativity is sometimes grabbing into the spiritual
There are spiritual beings out there. Good or bad
Not all creative ideas are good ideas either. Some are quiet whacky

What I see is that people have a hard time separating art skill and creativity.
Art is a skill, much like a language, that you slowly learn over time.
You can actually break down most art into simple skills stacked on top of each other.
It is not the learning or use of these fundamental skills that is creative.
It is actually very systematic, like mathematics or any language.
The creativity comes in the story you want to tell.
The higher your mastery of a language, the more interesting stories you can tell.
Much the same, the higher your art skill the more interesting stories you can portray on the canvas.
If you take this approach, you will realize that creativity comes secondarily to art skill.
Learn to be a good artist first, then worry about being creative.

That is why in an animation or comics studio there are creative minds in making stories, creative minds in making characters and voice actors, etc.
And by creative it doesn't mean completely unique and original really.
Anyway, some people are better at character creation and some are better at story creation, and some are better at animation because of the depth, the colors maybe, Some are better at simple shapes and others can't do any drawing or movement without extra specific details.

I just don't understand how to live a happy life being mediocrity without any passions and seeing all this people and their works over the world and internet...

My problem is that I'm too creative, and my stories aren't easy or small scale nor my ideas, creating these things isn't like an artwork, it's like a production, a book series, a film, a comic, etc. UA-cam vids and art ideas come naturally but I want to go beyond that, I just don't know what stuff has more value to the world as you never know what is and isn't of merit, as the creator you become a bit bias and the workload to complete something by yourself can get overwhelming at times.

Creativity is the Greatest rebellion for mad society. Creative people are more individual, they are harder to be condition to follow a society. Uncreative people are more obedient, hard, and mechanical. Which is what society needed.

If you have below average IQ, your UA-cam motivation and hard work will not work for achieving success. So, don't give People false hope and motivation. You are privileged by your luck and High IQ.

Many have the talent to create brands that cater to momentary trends. But who actually has the creativity to think outside of the box and explore that territory with their basic skills? Fact is, nothing popular starts out as popular. It gradually becomes what it is by *speaking to the crowd.* I say no more.
