I will never get tired of watching you build up skin tones - it just feels like magic. Really love your vids!
Thanks Grant! It really is one of my favorite things to do. People are so hard to paint but such a worthwhile challenge.
My notes app is PACKED and I love getting to cross off a bit of art that's been on there for a while. My most consistent spots for inspiration are late at night lying in bed, in the shower, or on a walk around the neighborhood. All moments where distractions aren't present and ideas can take shape freely. Great video, Hardy!
Thanks Nick. Great calls - getting away from the desk and getting some oxygen always does the trick.
It's a blessing to see you draw and listen to such wisdom all at the same time
Wow, that's so nice of you to say. Thanks!
Man I'm a big fan of your tutorials, and this stuff is better than 90% of the art tutorials on UA-cam, please keep making more. This is so insightful. Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much. Great to hear that and I'll definitely keep producing these :)
Awesome!!... heavy Twins from Invincible universe energy
Glad you liked it! The resemblance was not intentional but a few people have pointed that out and I totally see it now :)
for an aspiring artist, painting around 8 hours a day to train my skills to succeed, you are like a mentor for me. Thanks for the tipps and guidance. Art is a tough neighborhood so people like you are very important for new artists.
Thanks Morris. That is so great to hear, exactly what I'm hoping for. Wow, you are working really hard - good luck and I wish you success!
I don’t know how many times I screamed “YESSS!!” at my phone listening to this vid. This was very much needed for me. I am loaded with ideas and some I cannot manage it or put it together and have a blue print and then finish it. I think if I can have a blue print on how to finish such as looking at the right references and write everything on paper it would help. Me if for example I’m drawing a boxer I will watch a video or movie of a boxer in the background for inspiration. Thank you so much again. I have most of your courses from Udemy. Very helpful and so is this!❤
Oh that's awesome! Thanks for telling me that. So glad that this has been helpful.
Every brushstroke is a revelation.
If I wasn't 48 years old, I would probably switch to 2d, I find it a freer, more powerful form of communication.
There is nothing like the control of being able to draw light, and communicate with light what you want.
Doing it with your hands without adding a "spot" and automatic lighting.
Having art in your hand, that's a huge power.
Only now do I realize that we are only "image assemblers" compared to those who create by drawing.
Your videos are really good, and to hear you talk like a professional while working is very nice.
Then you always use soothing music, and that's not bad.
Great job as usual, it seems to me that you always have a basis of "fantasy" and sci-fi in your work. Great drawing really good!
fwiw, I am equally mystified by what you 3D artists can achieve. That being said, I really do like the ease, freedom and expressiveness that comes from making brush strokes, it's just my favorite thing. Thanks so much for your kind comments - I'm really glad to hear that you are enjoying these.
Thank you so much, you're videos are helping a great deal! Cheers🙏🙏🙏
Happy to hear that! :)
I am realizing have to take action to find inspiration instead of waiting for it to come to me.
The action sometimes just going back to a kid where I doodle crappy drawings until it suddenly hits something. Sometimes that action is looking at art books, or reading a comic I read 1000 times already because it brings me back to that feeling like a kid. Sometimes just opening pinterest or music like you say.
I love that - taking an active role in creating or seeking out inspiration really makes it feel like you have control. Thanks for the comment.
This is what I'm suffering with on a serious level, thank you so much
I'm so glad this was helpful.
thank you for this. I'm a 3D artists and suck at drawing BUT i will practice more and more and i hope to get at your level or close to it. ^-^ Your vids and your whole knowledge are amazing.
Thanks! I'm equally mystified by what you 3D artists can do. I'm so glad you liked it.
Great to see the recent spike your channel has experienced! Another insightful video-- wonderful stuff!
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support.
Hardy, you are amazing!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Thank you for this 🙏🙏
You're welcome 😊
Great video, hardy!
Glad you enjoyed it
Time management is my nemesys
I hear that! I had to get really regimented to try and corral my studio time. It helped some but it's still a struggle - I guess different people have different strengths and organization in general doesn't come easily for me.
Thank you ..🥳🚀🎈
You’re welcome 😊
Great video!!
Thank you!
Hey dude, love the videos and the teaching! Was just really curious on defining the process if you explain a bit more in detail, Its always too fast for me. I get up to the point of expanding the line work by 5px or whatever- for no white spaces, then the silhouette fill with our darker lines of our sketch. Then the orange toning goes down.. BUT After that it gets confusing. New layer copy? Change the hue. Not sure how you get those two tones, reddish and orange on one layer. Its too fast for me. Was wondering if you explained in detail a bit more somewhere or could help. Thank you so much!!! Your amazing at what you do and have inspired me to start drawing again.
Hey, sure! This one was really sped up and the painting was more of a background thing rather than a tutorial, so I apologize that this was not super instructive. I would definitely recommend checking out my video "Organic Creature Painting". I go over this process much more slowly and in depth. Basically I paint values first, then I do an underpainting to work in some varying hues to make the skin seem organic and lifelike. I think that video will explain it way better than my written description could. Reach out if you have other questions after watching that. Good luck!
@@fowlerillus Don't feel the need to apologize! Its a really great video none the less. I watched the video! Its def more in depth and have made a few notes from that. Really appreciate the reply too, that's really kind of you. Looking forward to more videos!
I love watching the process of the value edges, but I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it to even try practicing. Like what practice, or thing could I do to just practice the hard/soft/lost edges to make it look as realistic(or more aptly believable) and 3d as possible. Just draw random shapes with lines and work it out?
I have a few exercises that can really help with this. I like working on a dark background and painting with a light gray so the exercise is setup that way. Basically you paint a soft gradient highlight shape that looks like a spherical shape being lit (this is the soft value edge) - the real trick comes next, using either selection tools or brush dynamics or smudging, try to create a second soft spherical shape BUT the zone where the two shapes overlap should have a really sharp, hard edge distinction. This mix of hard and soft value edges is really a game changer. I've done a terrible job describing this verbally - sorry :)
@@fowlerillus not your explaining, more mine trying to keep on paper among other things including my over thinking it
wow , you really good !
Thank you! I really appreciate that.
nice
Thanks!
Can anyone pls tell me how u make ur sketch dark what you call it as " blocking in" Pls explain someone
Yes! (and sorry, I know that happened in less than a second on this sped up painting video). If you have your line art on a layer, first make sure that it is continuous all the way around your figure (no gaps or holes - one continuous unbroken line all the way around). Then use the magic wand tool to select the outside of the figure. Then go to Select -> Inverse to switch the selection to the inside. Then just make a new layer underneath the line art and fill it in with a base silhouette color of your choice (I like this dark cyan). That's it!
Kinda thought it was one of the mauler twins from invincible 😅
I totally see that! I had to look them up but it's pretty uncanny.
Love the piece by the way. It is indeed very human. Just feel like giving the guy a pat on the back out of sympathy
I do thumbnails instead of notes.
That's awesome. A great way to grab those transient ideas and freeze them in place.
