Ive wet mine when i first started drywalling in my 20s...i had a problem with it slipping and tearring when i wet it...the guy i worked for at the time was the only one who wet it first...ever sinse then ive never wet it...great video and fine demonstration...have a great day Guy...
As a DIYer I did a basement refinish a couple of decades ago. Given the high altitude, semiarid climate, and the fact I DIDN'T THIN THE MUD (used the green label) my tape would sometimes not stick. The super dry paper sucked the moisture out of the surface of the mud before I got it embedded. Not knowing any better my solution was to lightly spritz the tape with water (not soak it). Seemed to work fine. This summer I'll be doing a lot more taping. Now, thanks to you, I WILL BE THINNING MY MUD WITH WATER and leaving the tape dry.
This is an excellent video. I am a drywall newbie and just doing some remodeling in my house. I had difficulty embedding dry paper tape and getting it to go down without bubbles. I’m sure that’s because I’m not using the best technique or working fast enough. I found that LIGHTLY spraying the backside of the tape helped it to adhere better. Once I get better, though, I will try applying it dry!
I really appreciate your open-minded, thorough approach of testing the the technique of wetting the tape, rather than just saying you don't need to wet it. Great videos....thanks for your willingness, and effort, to share your knowledge and years of experience!
Thanks I’m learning every day. I’ve been wetting my tape for years. I would place mud on the drywall, wet the tape then place the tape on and mud over it. I will now stop wetting my drywall tape.
Thanks Doug. I have an idea for a Collab video we could do either as a live stream, or an assembled video we shoot separately. We could discuss the merits of mesh tape since so many drywaller‘s still think it’s a lousy product. You’ve had a lot of experience with it and as a very successful contractor that might help some people realize it’s more about the technique and materials. And I know you’re often really busy so no rush at all. I’ve got plenty more video ideas to put out
Good to hear from you my friend. That sounds like a great idea. I'm real busy with work at the moment you're right. Thanks for setting the record straight with a video demonstration - looks like I won't be wetting my drywall tape anytime soon, or EVER for that matter - Just saying
when you wet tape it will stretch to much and the mud will not Stick to the tape I had a guy run wet rolled of tape through a bazooka and onlong tape runs on flats with green lid the tape would shrink back and pull away from corner tape leaving a gap no need to wet tape

Is the contest over? I didn't see a link or a code word. I'm glad you came to this conclusion. I was not looking forward to strapping a five gallon bucket of water to my Bazooka. Hahaha...yeah right!! 27 years and I have never seen anyone wet their tape. I love how thorough you are in your teaching though. Put these silly things to rest so people can get to learning the right way. Right on! I would love to see your take on the Wagner Spraytech electric texture sprayer. We have to do some repairs sometimes where pulling out all your gear to texture is more of a pain than it is worth. This tool seems like a good answer to that problem, but I'm still hesitant to spend the money and get disappointed. Just wondering if you have ever tried it or seen it used.
Great information Guy! Had family members who have tried wetting the tape first and epic fail so I have always done just bedding the tape. Also some video's on best primers for drywall before texure? Also should you prime the drywall before and after? Not really any good information out there. Thanks Guy!!👏👏👏👏
The below brick website indicates that water only has that effect if the material is saturated. www.claybrick.org/should-you-wet-clay-bricks-using-them Spraying a wall may clear dirt and loose debris so I wouldn't think there is any harm as long as the mortar isn't being slapped on too soon after.
Do you have any pricing videos? i wanna get a good idea on how to price drywall jobs that sometimes pop up among other work i do. I myself am not super knowledgeable on how to do drywall to meet the level 5 criteria but I work with guys that do. I just need to learn price.
I have NEVER heard of wetting the tape. What is the process of wetting it, first? The wet tape makes no sense. How could you make money wetting the tape before installing it? It would take forever!
My test showed it stuck slightly less than the standard method of not wetting it. Do it if you want, but you're not gaining anything vs doing it the usual way. If you feel it is, you likely have tried using too thick of a mud when taping. We thin it way down and it wipes fine, and sticks like mad, so no wet tape needed.
ScottyDMcom may have hit on an important issue: climate and the water in the air. I live in a dry environment and this could be an issue. That said, I don't plan to wet my tape (a "weekend warrior" type DIYer). I think it makes application of the tape more difficult. However, when doing a really scientific comparison then personal bias should not be so very evident (even advocated). Just sayin'.
Personally I think it comes out better if it's slightly wet. A quick dip in a bucket and never have a bubble. In my opinion it depends on how wet the mud is and what mud you're using, green , blue or fast. His mud is super watery already so wetting the paper wouldn't be a good idea if it's that sloppy wet. If it's not that wet then the tape can suck up the water and create bubbles. I also think that putting too much water into it can make it weak . I can see why production people don't wet the mud since it's an extra step. They just use super wet mud. And that can come loose on the edges as well.
The manufacturer recommends to thin the mud as needed. Using thinner Mud has worked since the Dawn of drywall. Using thick mud to tape with is just harder for No reason
I always thought "wet taping" was referring to pulling tape from a super taper or slop box. And dry taping would be by hand from a hip roll dispenser. I have Never heard of wetting tapes with just water.
