I find it so sad that having a car that glides along, has effortless power steering, with an ultra smooth autobox, is something that nobody makes anymore.
It’s all about feel, feedback and cornering. It’s madness.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful piece of Americana with us. Love it!!!
Because that gets super boring after a while. This car is not an entertaining drive for being so comfortable.
The steering box has a massive dead zone, and is a very slow one. You have ton input constant steering, that's not relaxing after a while. (Even on US highways)
On top of that the size of the car should give you more interior room, but it feels just as cramped as any other mid-size sedan.
I still like the Crown Vic, but it's good they don't make cars like this.
@@connorPiper0 Entertaining means different things to different people. I'm sure many would find your ideal cars "Boring" too. A Ferrari to someone who is into the outdoor overlanding scene might find it limiting and boring.
Very happy for you. I have had 5 of these cars and love them. Unbelievably safe car and little to no maintenance for hundreds of thousand miles. That car will outlast you. And it triggers ev drivers who dont understand that a car that will last 40 years is far better for the environment than the battery powered garbage that gets thrown away every 7 to 10 years.
Enjoy
My neighbor has three Teslas and an excellent view of my two Crown Vics. Fortunately, we get along fine.
No electric motor will ever replace a V8. Proper Torque.
@@seancooke7332 unfortunately they will if we keep letting these tyrants control our lives. Definitely time to stand up for whats left of our freedoms. F globalists
@@john-vy1ml do you remember 30 years ago, when everyone knew about global warming, but the same people who now push EVs onto us didn’t care, because no one had figured out how to make money from it yet?
Very well put
Interesting that the DVLA have allocated a GM number plate for a Ford. Reminds me of a story from the former British Motor Corp who always used Birmingham reg plates for all their Demonstrator cars - *OB 123A, etc, so they decided to register some cars in the London area to disguise a new model. The plates came back as BMC 123A!!
Gm is a Kent number
As Kevin says, GM plate is local to here
All Kent plates start with G for “Garden of England”
The problem with the brakes may not be the caliper, it could be old flex lines in the front that have atrophied, and are allowing brake fluid to move, but not return. The pressure increase can cause the brakes to overheat. Take a look . The Overdrive gearing that drops the RPMs at speed will get you better mileage on an extended journey, Cheers !
Just came here to say that. Flex line collapsing and stopping the fluid returning.
I had this exact thing happen to me. I actually swapped the caliper (wasn't too expensive for my car, luckily) and only after that a friend suggested I change the flexi hose. And that finallly cured my sticky brakes.
Had similar issues at work and we've changed hoses a cheaper option but 9/10 tines it's been the caliper at fault. Easiest thing is change both that way you know it's sorted especially when parts aren't on your your doorstep.
Agree 100 % with your diagnosis. Have had this issue with a 2000 vehicle rear brake hoses.
Yeah its an issue sometimes ,But NO if those are phenolic pistons then that is the issue for sure , if the hose was restricted it would be the same effect all the time , and not go away and come back which is the symptom of phenolic pistons and the swollen bit becoming trapped in the bore .
That Renault 5 is a rare beast now especially on original wheels. That's the one car I wish I had never sold. ☹️. Glad you have the Vic on the road chief. Great vid as usual squire👍👍
Great video, Matt. Glad you like the Crown Victoria. On the highway one of these cars without a sticking caliper can be expected to return 28 miles to the Imperial gallon. The funny thing is that is the same or slightly worse than I did in both 78 Thunderbirds (5.8 litre, 3 speed auto box), both 79 Thunderbirds (5.0 litre 3 speed auto box), my 88 Crown Victoria (5.0 litre/AOD) with Trailer Tow III Package, my 88 Grand Marquis (5.0 litre/AOD) and my 92 Crown Victoria with the 4.6 litre and AOD. My 87 Grand Marquis (5.8 litre/Mechanical AOD) did closer to 35 mpg. My 89 Grand Marquis (5.8 litre/AOD/Trailer Tow III Package) achieved 39-40 mpg.
There is a reason the revs drop off when it engages overdrive. The Ford overdrive automatic transmissions do not use a locking torque converter. There is a two layer input shaft, one inside the other. The outer is used for 1st and 2nd. In 3rd both input shafts come into play. 4th, or Overdrive, uses the inner shaft only. The inner shaft bypasses the torque converter and is connected directly between engine and transmission. Because of this, engaging overdrive is never the smoothest as the gear change brings the input torque directly to the transmission. The Traction Lok (limited slip) differential has the Performance ratio.
Congratulations Matt on finally getting the Crown Vic on the road. You have to expect the odd teething problem as it blows off the cobwebs but you'll soon sort it out. Looking forward to seeing much more of this fine car.
"fine car" lol
It's a for. It's the epitome of unfine. How many of these turds did they make anyway?
@@TheHeretic435 they made millions of them and they are very durable when cared for….Ford quit making them because they needed to make unreliable things that you toss out to buy another. just follow the money…
Great video Matt. The excitement whilst driving was brilliant. Get the brakes and bodywork sorted and fix the radio and you’ll be good to go!!
As you mentioned the Rear View Cam: I can highly recommend it, driving in Europe (or UK ..) with narrow streets. I drove a Crown Vic for years in the States, and now have a 2010 California P7B in Germany (with original dark tinted windows in the back). I had a dual-DIN-size Kenwood radio with the rear view cam installed, and it has proven to be quite practical maneuvering in parking lots ;). Note: the double-height US radio does *not* translate into dual-DIN size, so some manual cutting out is necessary to make it fit.
I’m American but in the UK often. I think I saw this car on the M3 recently. I own a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. Best car ever!
We most certainly do not change our plates every year!! We replace little stickers on the rear plates, called tabs :) should be a month sticker (which is permanent), and a year sticker, which gets replaced annually
I will mention we do indeed change plates when the vehicle changes owners. Usually.
it could be the rubber brake hose that is making the brake bind. they break down inside. the fluid can pass under brake pressure but will not back flow after you release the brake and so the calliper stays under a small amount of pressure.
I was thinking the same. Try cracking the bleed nipple, if fluid shoots out under pressure that would point to the hose being the issue.
I did think of that but one piston moves easier than the other
@@furiousdriving do the flexi same time just in case….fit and forget
Buying a car from another country and
Without inspecting it and 1 major problem is a brake caliper is a complete win!
The sliders will come out. The rubber boots just want a spray with wd40 or similar to soften and lubricate them and then get a small pick or flat screw driver and they will tease off. Then you can clean up and re grease the sliders. I’d recommend this on all the callipers. Your problem could be a collapsed brake hose from inside.
I've heard that regular WD-40 degrades rubber, as does regular grease, so it's best to stick with lubricants designated for rubber parts (silicone-based?). Personally, I've had good luck using cooking spray on brake parts, but it does make the car smell like a bad burger joint.
@@pcno2832 wd40 is rubber safe
I think you should take the crown vic to the NEC in stead of the tomcat
I like the way you respect your neighbour's bin privacy. Often an overlooked thing in this day and age.......!
Excellent to see the Might Vic on the road! You can't beat the noise of a V8 rear wheel drive motor way basher! would be great to see a video where you're listing what it's like as a daily. Harry Metcalfe (Harry's Garage) done one recently showing how easy it is to live with a Range Rover 'classic' vs. the latest gen, pointing out things like parking spaces issues, how easy it is to navigate around a multi-storey car park etc. With the Crown Vic, I image pro: motorway miles! presence! ride! and cons: Supermarket parking! Picking up a Big Mac ;)
Strip the calipers and rebuild them plus change the hoses. Crown Vic is built like a tank, the 4.6 litre 2v modular V8 is a gem of an engine.
That blues bros quote was the best! 😂
US plate rules vary by state. But in my case (Pennsylvania) you are assigned a plate when you register the car. This plate stays on the car as long as you keep it registered, and you can transfer the plate to new vehicles indefinitely or until an inspection station deems that it is too weathered or worn and requires replacement.
I have a 2008 P71. Mine was a sheriffs department car, and is in excellent condition considering. Your car color, to me, indicates that the car was an investigators or state bureau of investigation type auto. Not a daily police department driver, or it would have about 150k miles on it where it hits manditory sale mileage. One thing to be aware of, the intake manifold gaskets to the heads sometimes leak. This leads to coolant draining down into one of the spark plug wells. If your engine begins to miss on a cylinder and you notice a wet spark plug well, then that is most likely the issue. Enjoy it, they are truly great cars.
Your excitement throughout this is utterly infectious. I now want a massive Yank Tank too!
4:00 no we don’t change our plates every year, we have to get a new registration sticker every year though depending on what sticker you buy. I’ve seen some stickers go for a few years.
What’s a registration sticker? I feel like us British have no idea how the states register cars.
In the UK cars have the same plates throughout their lives.
Louie Horwood it’s a sticker you put on your plate or in your windshield (depending on the state) that tells if your license plate is expired. Once expired you have to renew it which basically means buying a new sticker from the DMV. You typically don’t change the plate unless the car goes under new ownership but even then I think you can keep the current plate in some instances.
Well done Matt, that’s lovely to see that on the road at long last. Well worth the wait.
Love the video congratulations on finally getting it road legal. Keep up the great work.
Wow in Victoria Australia we can only get number plates from vicroads aka the DVLA. We must go to a vicroads inspection centre where they issue you with your number plates. They only send out replacement plates in the post. You must present for inspection to get new issue ones. It is also illegal to use sticky tabs in Victoria they must be screwed into the car.
Little tip, drill from the back so the drill does not push off the reflective backing as it beaks through. Nice to see you are fully road legal, bey you are loving it Matt!
Hello from the USA. My mom had a grand marquee when I was younger and we took it on several road trips as a family. It was also the car I started detailing for the first time so seeing the interior brought back memories.
Ideal car for a road trip, big and comfy. Its interesting how similar all the versions are
What a great day! Well done Matt, I've loved your adventures with the Crown Vic.
Fantastic! Your enthusiasm is great, must be a marvellous feeling to of achieved one of your dream cars, love the sound under load, thanks for sharing and looking forward to more!
Great to see it on the road and you enjoying cruising around 👍
16:26 cud-yud-yud! Dem Dukes, dem Dukes!
Looks so cool, glad you’ve got it on the road now and can enjoy it!
Tip for the future if you have to drill a hole in number plates drill from the rear as when you drill from the front you can pull the backing away from the acrylic meaning moisture gets in
When in the trade and drilling replacement number plates, the plate suppliers advise front to back so that any swarf gets pushed behind so debris from the reflective backing doesn't get trapped behind the clear acrylic front. Neither approach is fool proof.
@@stephenjcuk7562 I'm going by what I was told by the manufacturer when I used to make them up
Congratulations 🥳! Known rust-proofing in Dudley are good, if you want a recommendation - also appropriate considering the model!
Your joy at having the CV finally on the road is plain to see. You're definitely living the dream and I'm well chuffed for you 👍
Is it worth ordering a set of seals first and rebuilding the caliper? I did both on a Cherokee XJ with seals from USA and they were spot on after cleaning up the bores&pistons. Shipping will be a lot less too, just a thought.
So happy for you Matt! Finally you can enjoy it properly.
Great to see the Crown Vic on the road. It might be worth changing the front flex hoses. Great fun.
Loved your Elwood Blues (Dan Ackroyd) impression @18:20!
I'm made up for you, Matt! Looking forward to seeing more of the Crown Vic, I'd never get bored of that noise!
Good for you. Know the feeling having gone through the experience more than once. I was lucky to have a friend who allowed me to use his dealer plates on both, so they didn't have to stand around while waiting and I got to drive them. Got to agree about transport, had mine delivered by big lorry, don't know if it's possible know, you get a car transportation company to pick it up. May have to wait for the right run but, it did reduce the price. It's got to happen quick though or you get charged by the dock. I was lucky, my cars showed up straight away, the additional V5 paperwork is a pain though. Only ever bought one car, had a couple on my companies via lease but, getting the plate and being legal in the import feels so more fulfilling, guess it all the faff and waiting.
Matt a brilliant video so glad to see you enjoying the crown vic it takes me back to seeing them everywhere in Colorado on holiday I still have my sales brochure I brought back with me! Hopefully the brake issue can be sorted but wish you may happy hours of motoring in her and look forward to the videos in future on her
It actually amazes me the similarities between your interior, and the interior of the Ford F-250 I used to drive for work.
Great news Matt. Very pleased indeed for you. Those indicators would irk me though. Too fast!
Have fun ...
Awesome video Matt. First time watching your channel and I love it. I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while, they are great vehicles. Plenty of room, plenty of smooth power and reliability, what's not to like? The 4.6 engine in there will run forever and these things are like tanks, especially the former police cars. I still see some occasionally in use with some departments. I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel, look forward to more. Keep it up! Beautiful color too!
Wise to change the flex hose with the caliper I think . ( hose trap door syndrome ) ..
Peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
Yay 😁 good to see it road ready, bet it makes my 3rd Generation Mondeo look small 😝 mpg is not bad for its size my 1800 Petrol Mondeo does 29/31 round town .
Nice one Matt, good to see you out and enjoying the Crown Vic even if you had to cut it short due to brake issues, the sound of the V8 is infectious!
Its an incredible noise, if only it cost less to enjoy!
Glad you've got your canal barge on the canals !!
Looking good
Lieutenant Furious on highway patrol in the Crown Vic. This has literally just made my day. What a glorious thing.
I like how the three letters on the plate almost look like the initials of Crown Vic Police 🤣 👍🏻
Very funny Matt. You can’t get the grin 😁 off your face.
Could be fluid needs a change, had a similar thing on a wee citreon, brakes kept seizing after a run, new brakes and everything before aha moment, new fluid and that fixed it! Fluid was boiling once brakes heated up as it was so old and full of water causing it to expand.
Love the car! I loved driving my Crown Vic a long time ago in Europe. Now in Utah I still own a panther platform car. If you know my videos you know.
I have a VW Jetta, the rear brake lines were clogged. The difference was night and day in the pedal feel. For your car, rockauto will have those.
Really pleased for you Matt!
What an iconic beast of a car!
I’m sure you’ll soon get it fettled - look forward to seeing it all come together.
Are you taking it to the NEC now then? 🤔
You could probably fit the nec in it
Matt; Congrats on your Crown Vic cop model. I got into them when I was traveling a lot (in USA). Renting these cars was a no brainer. Always the same, easy to drive, comfortable, and never a problem. Suggestion; A Mercury Marauder (2003-2005 I think, just look for it) is pretty much the same as the Ford Police Intercepter but made for the public with more comfort and luxo items. Same heavy duty build, BUT, not the same high miles. HOWEVER, be prepared to change the front shocks to regular items and adjust a few other suspension pieces. Otherwise the damn thing bounces big. Also, could you speak a tad slower for those of us who speak American? Best, Jaz
Almost forgot. Production of the CV for the public ended in 2012 but continued for the cop fleets until 2014. You will occasionally still see them on the road with police departments. The cops loved them.
Production for public stopped in 2006 and the the last one sadly 2011 .
They made them in 2012 but all of those went to the mid eastern countries where they are extremely popular I think they made the civilian model until 2011 in North America there are no 2014 crown vics on earth
@@jrsmith1008The 2012 model year was a limited run of leftover 2011 Crown Vics exported to the middle east. In the US, civilian Crown Vics were only sold until 2008 due to poor retail sales while the Grand Marquis and Town Car were sold to everyone until 2011. You're right about the 2014 Crown Vic not existing lol
Good luck!
You can put in E10 with no problem.
Hopefully you will get the brakes sorted.
Matt that is one real nice car buddy, but if your going to change the caliper you should also replace the flexi pipes as well. That way you know the problem will definitely be sorted! I'd also put a real nice exhaust on it as well, just to help that beautiful V8 engine sing a little better 😜
Before 1983, the Crown Vic was built in the U.S, probably Edison, N.J (N.Y.C suburb).
From my experience, yes brake hoses given that age need replaced. But if the pistons are sticking like what it looks like they are (just one), try flushing the brake fluid/replacing or rebuilding the calipers. If the fluid is dark its probably got some crud in the piston bore's. Those slide pins come out just keep pulling, you won't hurt the rubber. Won't hurt to lube them. Brake fluid is hygroscopic and you can get rust in the caliper bore's from lack of brake fluid upkeep. I usually flush brake fluid every 5 years or so.
Lovin' that shine on the paint.
Lovely Jubbly, nice to see your Yank Tank on the road and the big smile on your face, after all this time "DVLA ETC" you deserve it Matt
Jeez, that Clio at 11.01 looked a bit loose around the back end as it went round the roundabout!
Surely better to replace the callipers on both sides as will be balanced, one would not replace just one disc or rotor as our cousins over the pond would say. A problem with one and the other won't be far behind, save on the postage and customs fees as well. Get all the parts you may need in one go so just the one clearance fee, provided all in the same cosignment.
For the caliper problem just pull the "stuck pistons and clean piston/bores and put the pistons back into the housing. Nothing fancy about a caliper, its just a metal piston inside a bore in a with a rubber seal and a dust boot on the outside. It's usually just a little rust on the housing part behind the dust seal, outside the actual seal. Pretty easy fix actually...
Actually last time I fixed a stuck caliper piston, it was just a dust boot problem. The metal retaining part of the boot had started to rust inside the rubber and made it swell, pincing the piston. A new dust boot taken from a cheap caliper repair kit fixed the problem, basically a 5 minutes repair.
Way to go,Matt!!Like I said before,it's a hell of a cruiser.I laughed a lot when you said what your son thought of the back seat...so,happy motoring, lots of it!One more thing,V8s and fuel economy don't realy go together, but, since it's not an every day ride, don't worry about it.Just enjoy it.
Great Blues Brothers quote (almost), Elwood!
The smile and excitement says it all, it's a beautiful car I'm so glad you can finally enjoy it
Great stuff Matt. That car would be the ideal to take to the NEC as it could take a lot of stuff. Probably more than the Volvo :)
You should make a quick video or show us how your lights look around the crown vic, I’m curious on how the rear fogs and turn signals work!!!
You got one in nice condition and only 80K miles. Sounds like we need underside car washes here! Like the interior styling.
You can disable the overdrive by pushing the button/knobb at the end of the gearlever. Mine uses 11,5 liters per 100 kilometers (about 21 US MPG)
yes, I need to try that button to see how much of a difference it makes to the drive
The smile on your face sayes it all we all might be getting older but we all kids at ❤ heart all the best matt still got the freelander manual if your over my way anytime donny
Great to see more vids of the vic! How about saving some cash and getting a callper rebuild kit? Would also make a great video for the channel!
Now we know what the designer of the 'Ford Brenda' (Scorpio >1985) did in his spare time!
Nice, I have a 99 P71 from Pinal County Sheriff in Arizona.
Cool!
I saw one of these all decked out in cop uniform and it was HUGE!
The 06+ cars have a rack and pinion steering rack with a wider wheel base, which improves handling significantly.
Hard not to like that low rumble from the V8.
Cute ‘Airplane !’ reference at the petrol pump….
I had the same issue with my au falcon xr8 it kept dragging the drivers side front caliper drove me nuts finally traced it to a faulty master cylinder. The Vic looks beutiful their very similar to our Falcons big rear wheel drive tanks.
Hi, absolutely loving the Crown Vic, could you tell me what can you used for the rust protector?
Great! I'd love to see a feature on your US Ford with Hubnut's Australian one.
No leave the two of them alone .
Excellent to see you driving her. One question....why the welsh cop talk?? 🤣
Awesome that you are so enthousiastic! It really rubs off! Love the vids!
I think you should get that steering wheel leather trimmed, it is looking a bit worn and would add a touch of luxury!
The arched bridge over the Motorway resembles the Ohio-Indiana state line marker on I-70.
Great to see you enjoying the car at long last!
Your smile and laugh when you booted it out of the Petrol Station tells us everything! Enjoy !!
Congratulations Matt, you are now legally able to do as many stake outs as you wish, enjoy this really cool car❤️.
Love these cars! I've got an 04 p71 that I use as my commuter that I'm taking the transmission out of this weekend. Got 210,000 miles out of it with around 95k of those in police service before needing a rebuild. Not too bad!
I should add, if you need a replacement stock head unit, I've got the one out of mine sitting in a box doing nothing for me if you wanted it.
Thanks, I have a replacement waiting to go in, which should work better
Trans is pretty common. Usually front pump failure starts with a whine. But alot of the whining on these cars is pretty normal which makes it hard to troubleshoot. Luckily the trans is common and there's so many junk yard parts and reubilt ones it's not that expensive compared to most vehicles.
Congratulations on the successful registration, if you go to “states plates” online, you can buy American style number plates with your registration on them. They come in any colour you want including British white / yellow reflective, you can also get them in British font and spacing as well as American font and spacing. I have them on all of mine. They’re about £50 ish
Yes, been looking at them, some show plates for events in the US font would be good
They’re great quality, the company operate from France as they can’t legally sell the plates from here. Usually, after you order them, you hear nothing from them, then the plates arrive 2 or 3 weeks later
I have had that hot brake binding problem many times. It's either some sort of pressure build up (only had that twice in the last 37 years of fixing my own cars) or most likely it's a problem with the square seal. I have often fixed it by popping the piston with the brake pedal and carefully removing the seal and cleaning everything up and reassembling. Replacing the seal is the best option however cleaning off the old seal often works as well. Just cleaning the piston and bore never works.
Saying that now that calipers either used, rebuilt or new knockoff are so cheap recently I have just replaced the caliper... I tried a new knock off a few months ago and so far it's perfect.
Great to see it on the road, I'd be getting rid of that annoying bonging noise when you open the door though.
There's a formula for disabling it in the instruction manual, also on youtube.
@@normanduke8855 Or… just don’t leave the key in the ignition when the engine is off. :)
looks nice ,park it up now fuel £2,20 a litre next week .
There should be date codes on your tyres. It's in weeks and year of manufacture.
I recognised just about every road you drove on there as I live locally (Medway Towns) 😉 For my taste I'd prefer it so that you could hear the V8 a bit more, not obnoxious, but just so the V8 soundtrack is always there. But it sounds lovely as is. Lovely car Matt 👍
Yeah, keep the original exhaust but make a valve in it halfway 😀
I think its bit quiet too, will have to look into louder back boxes!
I suspect your issue with the dragging brake, from the way you described the calliper being free off the car but binding up when it's in place, probably isn't an issue with the calliper at all but an issue with the brake flexi hose that is starting to break down internally and acting like a one-way valve that is allowing the brake fluid into the calliper when the brakes are applied, but is then stopping the fluid returning to the master cylinder when the brake pressure is released, thus causing the dragging brake. Brake flexi hoses seem to be something that only gets a variable amount of attention at roadworthy inspections in the US, unlike the UK MoT test, and this car does seem to have been a spare vehicle for the latter part of its' working life and so probably hasn't had quite the same level of attention as it would have had when it was with a regular driver as their front line vehicle, so the brake flexi hoses may well be the original ones from December 2001 when the car was built, and so are likely to be well past their best from the amount of heat soak they will have taken with the brakes stopping a heavy car in fairly hard use in its' police career. I would suggest a new set of flexi hoses all round, and maybe a nice upgrade to some stainless steel braided items might not be a bad idea as they will increase the amount of feel you will get through the brake pedal, which is probably something this big American boat doesn't have in spades. Needless to say, if one brake flexi hose has deteriorated to this extent then it could well burst if you need to really throw the anchors out in a hurry, as the strong inner liner of the hose is clearly compromised, which is why diligent mechanics will test the flexi hoses for swelling under use that indicates that the hose inner liner is compromised and the hose is at definite risk of failure in an emergency braking situation...
I would suggest using copious amounts of cavity wax on this car in appropriate places as US cars really aren't all that well rust protected compared to European and Japanese vehicles intended for the European market, partly because the manufacturers want to force people to have to buy new vehicles regularly and partly because the lifespan of a lot of US vehicles is so short compared to the UK, Europe and a lot of other parts of the world that it really isn't all that necessary and would be an unnecessary build expense and cost to the customer. Needless to say, this rather means that galloping corrosion is a likely occurrence in regular use in the UK...
I noticed only one piston is sticking which makes me think its the caliper
Lmao…. I realised that the entire time I was watching this, I was grinning like an idiot 🤣 what a fabulous, loveable car. If the mpg is 25, then its not much worse than my V70! 🤣 great video Matt
I always forget those get that MPG - I nearly changed my Merc for one until I found that out!
On the other hand my V70 gets over 50mpg on a run, it’s a D5……
If you dont want to spend 80£ for the brake caliper. Then disassemble it on the bench. It is not that difficult. Rusty therefore sticking pistons may be still salvageable. And be absolutely sure that both of the caliper sliders are absolutely straight and not bent. Even slightly bent sliders gives falty caliper stick indicator.
