There are a lot of us who truly enjoy working on old cars. In December 1980 I bought a 70 Thunderbird that needed some work, i replaced the gas tank, the fan clutch, did a basic tune up and carb rebuild. Then the bus drivers went on strike and me and 2 passengers used that car to commute to Boston for 3 weeks . The drivers side window was out while I waied for a motor/regulator. Then window in and a/c charged it becane a cool cruiser. That car ran for a year and a half before the engine developed rod knock. I sold it for parts in September of 82. Still miss it today. I'm 61 now but I'd still like another classic.
Trav, I can't tell you how proud I am of you for using Cherry Bombs in your exhaust! I am 40 now, but when I was 16 I bought a 1994 Eddie Bauer Explorer (4 years old at the time, and 66 vehicles ago for me), I yanked the 4.0L V6, swapped in a 302W with the A0D4 auto trans, I put an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger on it, long tube headers, full dual exhaust with Dynomax 60" glasspack mufflers, and slant cut chrome tips. I had it dyno tuned and it made 418 whp on a 2WD with the 8.8 and 3.73. It wasn't posi at first, but I swapped it in later. I put a Skyjacker 6" lift on it, and put 15x10 bullet hole wheels with 13x12.50 TSL Thornbirds on it. I LOVED that truck. I moved to Pennsylvania, traded it for a mint 1992 Acura Integra GS with 104k miles, cold AC, four 10" Orion Cobalt subwoofers, a 1000x4 Soundstream amp, a set of chrome 17" wheels (that were fugly), and a full cream leather interior swap for it. Six months later I saw my baby at a local ice cream shop with some 16 year old girl driving it and she was messed up on something. Two weeks later I saw it on a rollback truck completely smashed up. She rolled it 8 times and lived, but was given a DUI. That gutted me to see that. So sad. Edit: to this day I can still tell you the VIN number of that truck and the Florida license plate number that was on it when I first got it registered. This was 22 years ago and was not my first car.
Absolutely a great video! There are many UA-cam guys who do this with old cars, some are just constantly trying to be funny and that gets old. You've got the right personality, you show what your doing, give hood explainanation and your appreciation for these old rides shows! Thanks for creating the content you do! As far as you making mention of,what the pioneers were thinking when discovering this land, today's "man" won't ever be able to share in what they may have felt. Today's man is surrounded in so much comforts and security that we only see a small window of the freedom man of past would have experienced in their explorations. The more comforts and security we want, the less freedom we can have. Thanks for the ride along, truly is awesome seeing the old iron getting to inhale some fresh air.
Yea I find Travis also just in centre. I learn also from him. I drive for many years oldies and very pleased. Those great people deed that time these cars with love... Good era that period.
I'm 68 year's old. Growing up my dad was a Mopar guy. I distinctly remember our two 383 Dodge Polara's. Amazing engine's. My first car was the infamous 68 Plymouth GTX 440, 4brl. So much fun. So many great memories. My uncle from Newport VA owned a 60's something Chrysler New Yorker w/440 Magnum. Beautiful classic car. Excited to see you reviving this one.
GREAT!!! THANK YOU MY SON MAX 7YR.S OLD AND I LOVE THIS CAR ,, THANK'S FOR THE COST LIST .. MAX SAYS THE CHERRY BOMBS SOUNDS GREAT.. GREAT OLD TOWN AND TRIP TO SEE,, THE TRAIN,,EMILY IS A COOL TROOPER SHES A GOOD HELPER ,, MAX SAYS BEHAVE CHRYSLER YOU GOT SAVED FROM THE CRUSHER.. SOME OF THESE LIGHTS CAN BE DUMMY LIGHTS AT TIMES ,, I FIXED MY 1978 BUICK SKYLARK LIGHTS BUT THAT POWER STEERING PUMP LEAKS SLOW , LET IT BE THEN FILL IT UP.. THANKS FOR THE VIDEO ,,, MAX SAYS SEND MORE.. PEACE,, EMILY, TRAVIS .. HAPPY THANKS GIVING!!!!!!
That was an excellent shakedown trip for that car. You discovered most if not all the problems that really create bigger problems down the road. It needs a "This Is NOT An Abandoned Car" bumper sticker. Hope your search for the International's driver's side door pays off soon. Great video and thanks for sharing.
I am glad you took the booster apart.....it is rarely done..........your dad is suprising with his knoweledge.... and you he taught you well! Both of you are handa on
One thing that might help the gas mileage as altitude increases is to advance the timing some. While idling the engine. loosen the distributor and rotate until RPM comes back up. I had a 68 Dodge Polara with the 383 (not the HP version) and 2BBL carb. It delivered 19MPG at 70MPH with the AC on consistently except at higher altitudes. Nice trip and commentary. I like how you were able to recover from any issue that developed. Kudos!
@@jdpinbaytownThat HAD to be alot more fun than a 2bbl. My 70 B body Roadrunner with the 383, Thermoquad, and an A833 four speed manual with a dual tunnel ram and two Holley 650 cfm double pumpers was SO much fun, but it was tough to dial in the carbs so it wasn't trying to run full throttle all the time. Best I ever got with the Thermoquad was 14 MPG, and that was with a cam, headers, full 3" dual exhaust with Flowmaster Super 44s, and a 9" rear axle with 3.73 gears and a posi, but I couldn't stay out of the throttle. The sound of that 383 with the secondaries open was just intoxicating.
Man, with your exhaust kit it really shows how even with smaller engines back in the day you can really make them sound 100 cubic inches bigger without fancy high dollar exhaust kits! That sounds awesome! Those vintage 1920's era see-through gas pumps at 36:16 are worth big money today. They're in great condition as it is, and in that condition they're probably worth at least $5k a piece. If they were restored as new they could catch over $10k each. All that automobilia inside that garage is a gold mine if it's all original and authentic.
I love your car ,I bought a 70 Newport in 1980 and like you I had to fix the exhaust but I used Thrush mufflers . It was a great car and never let me down until I was hit head on in the snow and it was totaled , when i went to the tow yard to see it I all most cried.
Ahhh… The classic sound of a Chrysler starter! What a beautiful payoff road trip after all your hard work of bringing this car back to life. Mahalo for bringing back my memories of Arizona!
I used to work in USA as a chef - you made me remember that period from 2009-2010 before I returned to Romania, Brasov to work in IT...thank you for that...
22:30 it’s sad how they don’t build walkable towns with unique and pretty buildings anymore. I’ve always had an appreciation for these locations as well. Full of character and way cooler than a stroad that you see everyday…
Just not a fan of loud exhausts on non muscle cars. You get a little stock rumble with stock type exhaust but that’s all I prefer. To each his own. Cool vid
Fantastic video. I enjoyed every minute of it. I am in the UK so it was fascinating to see a little of the USA . The canyon is awesome . Great that you were able to save that gallant old motor and get her on the road. You guys are amazing . All the best from the UK.
I love the Mopar the the paint Is amazing it's in the runs good I had trouble with my aluminum radiator I had a ree Flair the lines to fit right I had 68 Dodge Monaco station wagon with a 440 it was a great car
Great adventure! That was a very good way to test the car, and you have a great girlfriend willing to share the adventure with you! Thank you for taking us along!
Kudos,, I think if I parked that car in the driveway the wifey would report it as an abandoned auto .... but after owning a used car lot for twenty-odd years I have a bunch of stories on procuring and retrieving a bunch of old mopars. Well done, it makes me want to take a road trip
Great video the two of you seem very simple people nothing fancy or flashy you match the car’ those 383is where some of the best engines Chrysler ever made in remind me of my 67 dodge polara back when I was younger keep up the good work and stay simple and humble!!
Awesome DIY Exhaust! Super sweet Trip, My sisters name is Emily! odd. lol, but I hope to see you do a Interior fix up soon!. She needs some help for sure. I gotta check out the Antique mall! holy cow. Been Lovin' these vids!
This channel keeps getting better. I love the antiques too, they built things so much better back then. Not like the throw away society like it is now a days. I still like the tires and rims choice, them cherry bombs reminded me of my younger days. I put those on my Dodge Coronet back in the day.
Awesome road trip!! Lol, Rick (Travis' dad ) was so proud he had to call me and let me know you had hit the road! He called me while you were still at the Canyon....
my wifes name is also emily! i bought a 1978 w116 mercedes benz 280se, bit inspired by your channel, just want to keep it running and go on road trips, has a few spots of deep rust, a couple coin sized holes in the floor pan (the old sound deadening thats an inch thick was full of water) bit of ol rustoleum will fix that, the mats are very thick anyways. Im from australia so i dont have these old muscle cars here unfortunately. However i feel like old cars have so much character and are just more fun to drive and do road trips with long as you have a boot full of a few supplies than youre set to go!
What a great road trip, i love the way you respect and get excited by the past and the ways of life, especially at a young age. The car is extremely cool, but then I am a Mopar fan in the U.K.
Thanks for taking us along on your journey, I drove a 71 Newport from 1975 to 1983, it’s very similar to your car. You need a new choke pull off, I had that issue too.
Never been to the US , would love to go one day , So thank you for the journey through the beautiful countryside. Love the small towns and old buildings, cheers mate 👍🇭🇲
I would recommend flying to Las Vegas getting a rental car and checking out Arizona it's a 100 mile trip to Kingman from Vegas then get on rt66 and head for Williams and to the grand canyon
Superb video! Now I want a Newport and visit the grand canyon! Video illustrates well how old cars are still useful if you’re willing to put up with their faults. But then I think that’s the fun of owning old vehicles, they break but they’re much easier to repair.
That was fun, way to stay on top of things. I'm up here in Montana, we don't have the cactus, was cool seeing that on the side of the road. I need to take my old stuff on trips like that again. Williams looks like a cool visit too.
Dude your Chick is the best. She is so chill and positive along with intelligent. Have no clue who or what but damn, how nice. Easy going, chill and calm women are not everywhere is all i'm saying. Appears you have a cool traveling buddy and friend.
Sometimes the oil light in old Mopars will flicker or come on at an idle after the engine has warmed up. Should go off once you step on the gas. I ran 20W50 in my old Duster when the 318 got about 120,000 miles on it... greatly reduced the flickering. I love idiot lights on the dash, but gauges really are better.... especially for oil pressure and temperature. I would think 15 mpg in a big boat Chrysler running a 383 Magnum is a wild stretch. My 71 Charger has the original 383 Magnum... and today the best I get is 11 to 12 mpg... and my car is likely a few hundred pounds lighter than your Newport. Yeah that heater core is going to be a dog to change out... especially considering that your car has factory AC. I cannot say I've ever seen once leak as much as the one in your car! WOW! That was crazy. And that V-twin AC compressor... that was used on all Mopars back in the day. If you saw one with the square York compressor, it was an aftermarket AC system. Hard to believe that car sat for so long due to someone installing wires 180 degrees off! I hope that person didn't continue to pursue auto mechanics as a career or hobby! But then, I suppose if they hadn't screwed up so badly, we wouldn't have been able to see such an awesome video today! Good luck.
This was such a great video. It is cool to see videos of people taking forgotten old cars on long drives like this. My parents had a 1962 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop. They had it til it was totaled in November 1972. When i heard that gear reduction starter, it brought back a flood of great memories. After watching you start the car when it kept dying reminded me of our car. I think my parents' car had the same problem with the choke sticking. My dad would open the hood and put a screw driver like you did, and the car would start. So it was one of those, so that's what was wrong with our car. You stopped at a lot of places that I've been to. Flagstaff is a beautiful place. Williams is a cool place that we always stop at when we are driving on Interstate 40. I love the Brass Armadillo in Goodyear. They also have one in Phoenix, which is a little smaller than this one. There are several of these in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri. I've been to all of them except the one in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Keep the grrat videos coming, and i will keep watching.
Man that drive brings back so much memories! My family used to live in casa grande and Tucson. I would make that drive from Provo Utah once a month. Makes me wanna take a drive down south again!
Oh man! Those of us that love those old Mopar starters would love to see/hear an unedited version at 13:07. Also, I really admire you/ your knowledge, skill and bravery. This whole trip was quit the feat.
very impressive, definitely gotta fix the leaks, but it went. Thank you for bringing us along, great scenery, great content. I noticed the car seems to squat a little in the rear, I know sometimes the leafs can sag over time...I have put a many spring overleaf helpers, and coil over shocks on a many mopars in my day, they are easy to install, help with handling, and also help with luggage carry. I wouldn't do both, pick one and go with it if you choose to do so. Autozone used to carry the overleaf spring helpers pretty cheap, and coil over shocks can be found by anyone who stocks monroe shocks. I kinda wondered if it had air shocks, if not, I wouldn't consider them an option...they are very poorly made these days, not that they were any good before...lol
Great video Travis! We camped about 3 miles south of that Gas station, coming back from the North Rim. There's a little stand of Pine Trees with a "Camping Spot" right next to the road. Can't wait to get back in the truck for the NW & Rocky Mt. again. Truck camping is the absolute best. Just Food & Fuel expense. (And you don't really count the food. Because ya gotta eat anyway.)
I don't know why people don't set up a temporary heater buy a heater core run heat hose somewhere through the firewall put it in a ammunition box from harbor freight put a little 12 volt fan on the top of it and you have heat because I know it takes a long time to do the job properly
It's been so cool to come along with you guys on your journey love the car and your running repairs here in the UK gas is £6.50 a gallon so your gas milage is frightening that would be about $8 a gallon to you Love the trip and looking forward to the work you do on the car Thanks from Bedfordshire UK 🇬🇧
1:29 I didn't need to hear that noisy air tool. It scared the hell out of my cat, he jumped off me and ran away 😂. Awesome car! I've had SEVERAL C-bodies, and I loved them ALL!
What a cool adventure! Kind of sums up why I don't like EVs. Here you go dragging a old car out of a junk yard, throw some parts at it and you make an unforgettable memory. That will never happen with those appliances. They'll be in a junk yard and will never be revived.
Lol That exhaust would not pass grandpa's sensitivities but it isn't uncivilized either lol Now that locomotive you were standing on is just bout 1000 decibels louder lol I love old trains too Travis!! Love that you took us on this trip!! I used to drive a big rig down to Nogalas, AZ weekly back wow 10 years ago !! 😊
awesome road trip, very envious in the UK of where you guys can go. A road trip here usually means getting held up by some idiots glued to the road.....
I like those old boats! Keep em running, and they will last forever. You sure do have an understanding girlfriend! Not many would want to ride in a car that old. You and your dad did a good job on getting it going. Keep the videos coming!
I like to find old service station things like glass bottle oil jars and Monkey grip tube repair cans , Ammco windshield wiper blade rack . They make great displays in the garage
Mom had this car when i was a around 4yrs old cool to see this channel came from the rikrok but hope in the future you show more of the roadsterations you are doing and of corse more on the restoration of the forgotten American made machines that caddy limo would have launched your channel to the moon so many people are interested in those old cars
Just started to watch your videos and the episode was the one with awesome ole Mopar. Thanks for taking us on your trip and glad you had good luck with the car and some fun .
just found your channel recently. I am amazed at the number of people working on old Mopar's have no clue on how to check the transmission fluid, most cars will tell you how to check it right on the dipstick. It's very frustrating to watch you all do this. Please learn. Edit : I apologize after watching more it seems you do know how to check the trans fluid . My bad, but I've seen sooooo many lol . Also I really dig that your dad is involved, very cool
That sound after the exhaust installation, instantly put a smile on my face. That sounds crisp now ! Yeah!!
Nice mixture of roadtrip and fixing car-problems. Thanx

Take care of Emily that woman is a keeper. Maybe she can appear in more videos.

My 1970 Newport would get 17-18MPG with the 383 2Bbl, But I killed that when I put a Holley 600 4Bbl on it🤣
Thanks for the feedback
@@jdpinbaytownThat HAD to be alot more fun than a 2bbl.
Nothing like eating dirt while working on a car, thanks for the continued videos
Never been to the US , would love to go one day , So thank you for the journey through the beautiful countryside. Love the small towns and old buildings, cheers mate 👍🇭🇲
Thanks for watching Andrew 👍🏻
I would recommend flying to Las Vegas getting a rental car and checking out Arizona it's a 100 mile trip to Kingman from Vegas then get on rt66 and head for Williams and to the grand canyon
I remember my grandmother used to get milk delivered when I was a kid. We still have the metal milk case that they used to put the bottles in.
Superb video! Now I want a Newport and visit the grand canyon! Video illustrates well how old cars are still useful if you’re willing to put up with their faults. But then I think that’s the fun of owning old vehicles, they break but they’re much easier to repair.
Love that Chrysler starter sound.
Thanks for saving this gem!
That was fun, way to stay on top of things. I'm up here in Montana, we don't have the cactus, was cool seeing that on the side of the road. I need to take my old stuff on trips like that again. Williams looks like a cool visit too.
Man that drive brings back memories from my college senior trip. We went to Flagstaff and Phoenix and I drove that I-17 stretch several times.
Great show I love that you showed your trip back home.
Looking forward to the next episode.
Gotta love a road trip 👍🏻 holy crap I had headphones on and when you got on the air ratchet going I nearly hit the roof 😂
That blew my ears out too! 😣
Sorry I’ll work on my audio
Ha ha no worries mate 👍🏻 still loving your content.
Well, in my experience, old school air ratchets can be real screamers.
You return historical of many people's its momries. Thanks
Good luck.
Thank you for watching!
But yes gauges are much preferred
Awesome trip. Nice work keeping Jerome running!
I like watching the these older videos sometimes
Thanks for watching them man
I used to be stationed at Ft Huachuca. It's nice to see all that desert again!
Oh man! Those of us that love those old Mopar starters would love to see/hear an unedited version at 13:07. Also, I really admire you/ your knowledge, skill and bravery. This whole trip was quit the feat.
Those Chrysler starters do sound different and thank you for the nice feedback
Enjoyed the sitting on the ground to rebuild the brake booster with your Dad
very impressive, definitely gotta fix the leaks, but it went.
It was squattin because of the equipment I brought but yeah they do sag over time
I had Coilovers on my 70 Newport, Helped a lot!
Nice video, it’s great that you bought this American icon back from a long sleep to run with the new kids on the highways.
I don't know why people don't set up a temporary heater buy a heater core run heat hose somewhere through the firewall put it in a ammunition box from harbor freight put a little 12 volt fan on the top of it and you have heat because I know it takes a long time to do the job properly
I like the way you figure out engine problems. You have a great channel.
It's been so cool to come along with you guys on your journey love the car and your running repairs here in the UK gas is £6.50 a gallon so your gas milage is frightening that would be about $8 a gallon to you
Love the trip and looking forward to the work you do on the car
Thanks from Bedfordshire UK 🇬🇧
1:29 I didn't need to hear that noisy air tool. It scared the hell out of my cat, he jumped off me and ran away 😂. Awesome car! I've had SEVERAL C-bodies, and I loved them ALL!
Now this is a good video
Great video I love the will it run and drive home videos I know this was not that but I still enjoyed it thank you
What a cool adventure! Kind of sums up why I don't like EVs. Here you go dragging a old car out of a junk yard, throw some parts at it and you make an unforgettable memory. That will never happen with those appliances. They'll be in a junk yard and will never be revived.
I agree
I love old cars!
You an you dad rock thank you guys for all the great content from North Little Rock Arkansas
A road trip here usually means getting held up by some idiots glued to the road.....
lol, we are almost at the Grand Canyon, cant wait to get inside the hotel and check out that great crevasse. That made me chuckle
Nice when you find someone who enjoys your passions with you ! Hard to find a woman like that !
I like those old boats! Keep em running, and they will last forever. You sure do have an understanding girlfriend! Not many would want to ride in a car that old. You and your dad did a good job on getting it going. Keep the videos coming!
Thank you for watching man! And she’s a trooper haha
I like to find old service station things like glass bottle oil jars and Monkey grip tube repair cans , Ammco windshield wiper blade rack . They make great displays in the garage
The blown out mufflers sounded better 😢
MAN! That ratchet noise ... like my ex-wife when I brought home another old car ...
Glad you enjoyed !
That's a cool one. If you're ever up my way, swing into Durango, and you can ride one up to Silverton and back, life changing! Old west at its best.
just found your channel recently.
Hi from Tempe. Amazing guys. Keep up with the amazing videos. Love seeing those old cars on the road. I have 2 old cars myself.
I know this is a older video but there is nothing like a road trip in a old car
