I loved how he left it off with the words, "I'll be in good company." The 400 hurdle community is a very classy group of people. Nothing but respect from me for both those heroic runners.
agree.....Ive run 800, mile, 400, 110 hurdles, 400m Hurdles, 5k, 1600 m relay and various 5-10 mile events through high school and college. 400 hurdles wwas the hardest race because it was grueling and you HAD to pay close attention to your footwork-nothing more costly and embarrassing than having to stutter-step the later hurdles in a race
Man these guys are moving so fast to run 400m hurdles at 48 seconds. I do 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles. I ran a PR this year of 46 seconds which I never even thought was possible for me. But I pushed my self harder each race and I did it.
I remember watching a slow motion fast frame close-up sequence of Moses feet just after the olympics. The height his heels are above the track is insane. Even when he lands after the hurdles his heels are high up and he lands so powerful on the ball of the foot, almost like he runs on his toes. You can still see that in this youtube clip as well if you look closely. Edwin Moses is still to this day the most perfectly beautiful running sprinter I have ever seen. Such, how can I explain it natural, technique, perfect, really.
My coach says that 400m Hurdles is the hardest event for a sprinter, I tried it once and I can tell you that at the end, the last hurdles seems like 3m height those last 50m after the hurdles feels like a kilometer, By now, I think I'll just keep in my 400m & 800m
Yes the 400 Metre Hurdles are quite hard. But "Train, Train, Train" ( correctly) Get a a good Trainer/coach. I regret not keeping on at a local Athletic club age 18, was only 4 of us and the Trainer. But you most have the Natural Speed. I got Faster as I got older age 17 or 18. At 10, 11, 12, I was getting beat. My "friend" was winning school races (medals) age 10, 11, 12. When I got stronger (matured) age 15, he said to me, "how are you faster than me?" Some people get better as they get older. Stamina you can Build on, but Speed has to be there from day one (age 15 approx.). Speed can only be increased a little bit But "Stamina can be improved Greatly" by correct Training. Get out a Train !! Sláinte!
Behind every great athlete is a Great Trainer. I hope your school P.E. teacher is " Good " as my school P.E. was useless i.e. never trained us, we just showed up (no training) and ran Naturally. I won the 200 Metres age 15 and 400 M. plus other 2nd 100 M, 3rd 800 M, etc When 5th year (age 16) came the p.e. teacher (no teacher!) wouldn't let us 5th years compete in 5th year races. while he had let 5th years compete in our 4th year (15 y.o.) races. 1 year (One Year) is a big difference at school. I beat the 5th years as a 4th year. Sláinte!
Getting up and doing it again.. I ran track in HS on a cinder track, won the event, but crashed and fell and skidded a long way on my shoulder. I had run another race right after that, bloody shoulder and all.. I still have scars from that over 40 years later. I couldn't run that far and that fast now even with a hungry lion with 3 broken legs chasing me..lol For those of you who don't remember cinder tracks they were brutal to fall down on..like landing on broken glass on concrete..
Not only that, look at how he clears the hurdles with no wasted motion. Watch everyone else, they jump over the hurdle. Edwin Moses glided over the hurdles. Never had to change stride at the last moment and the glide gained him precious microseconds. A pure artist of his craft.
They got me at "the 400 huddles is one of two toughest individual races in track and field". It is a testament that it took the sport as a whole 35 years plus just to break the world record. It is tough my friends.
I think the world record in This event Will go at the olympics the 3 way battle between samba Benjamin and warholm im so hyped for the hurdles the next season and at the olympics in 2021
Felix Sanchez is a great hurdler and is one of the best in recent years. But he can never be compared to Edwin Moses.USA boycotted the 1980 olympics.therefore Moses wasn't able to participate. If not Edwin Moses would've won 3 olympic gold medals.
It is a weird event, in that the 2016 Olympic gold medalist was almost a second slower than Edwin Moses PB 👍 In fact, Edwin Moses would have won the 2016 Olympic final running a mediocre race 👍 he’s right in saying the sport hasn’t moved on at all. It’s probably gone backwards
How to say which is the hardest event? Nobody competes at an elite level at all track and field events, and it's therefore impossible to say. 1 mile race and the lungs and throat scream. No other distance does that. 3,000 steeple is like no other. The 800 is a 200 meter sprint times 4. The 10,000 is too fast and too far. And the field events? I have no experience to even venture an opinion, further proving my point.
But shot and 400 apples and oranges. Ask a decathlete. I was a shot putter. The amount of training, drills, psychology FAR exceeds what the uninitiated sees in brief Olympic coverage if the event every four years. Everybody ran to exhaustion as a kid. We can imagine how tired a great runner is coming down home stretch in 400, but almost no one understands what goes into great performances in shot put, nor training (injuries) that are common.
Except...Moses would have 3 Olympic gold medals if not for the 1980 Moscow boycott...and Sanchez is running times now that Moses ran 35 years ago. Sorry, dude...but you couldn't carry Moses' jock.
I loved how he left it off with the words, "I'll be in good company." The 400 hurdle community is a very classy group of people. Nothing but respect from me for both those heroic runners.
Sánchez was born in the USA and could have competed for them, I'm glad he competed for the Dominican Republic; they were so proud.
When I asked Carl Lewis about Edwin he just smiled and said that Edwin was the man.
The 400H should be a worldwide appreciated event, cuz it hurts so baadd
M Avila correction, it hurts so goooooodd😂
can honestly say long hurdles is the hardest event. Period. Im so excited for this season
Brendan Forde true, I always do a season opener 400mh to remind me why I am a triple jumper LOL!
Brendan Forde I haven't ever done a 400m hurdles race but I assume it's along he likes of the 800m, extremely brutal

I ran to 400m hurdles in the 80's and EM was my and ALL Hurdlers' hero. 50.1 was my best

If you do 400m and 800m, it should be easier for you to do 400mH than for a 200m/400m sprinter because those hurdles take a lot of endurance

Sad! Felix Sanchez will not win another medal because now He is retired :(
Thank Felix Sanchez for all the memories!!
Atenas 2004 and Londres 2012!!
Such a cool post. EM was/is still a princely figure. Class and character. Poetry in motion. Sanchez is ELECTRIC!
So cool!!
Im a high school (girl) 300m hurdler and its my event
I got 44.39 yesterday so im happy about that :3
That is actually really fast. I'm doing my first year of hurdling in my junior year and I'm kinda nervous about it.
+M Avila Im a high school (boy) 300m hurdler and i run low 42s, but keep up the good work and you can run in the 42s as well

Legends, both of them.
Felix ran for University City High in San Diego. As polite and friendly as any "star" I ever watched.
Superb !
The best ever in history
Moses stride is so fluent
Not only that, look at how he clears the hurdles with no wasted motion. Watch everyone else, they jump over the hurdle. Edwin Moses glided over the hurdles. Never had to change stride at the last moment and the glide gained him precious microseconds. A pure artist of his craft.
Would love to see Edwin compete as a master athlete.

Great prediction!
In the race in London 2012 Javier Culson from Puerto Rico third in 400 hurdle
Yes, congratulations to Puerto Rico
Basically the Caribbean was well represented.
LEGEND OMG😍😍😍
I think the weirdest part about Hurdles is when i learned that iowa is one of the few states that does 400H in high school. other states do 300H.
depends on your age.
Felix Sanchez is a great hurdler and is one of the best in recent years. But he can never be compared to Edwin Moses.USA boycotted the 1980 olympics.therefore Moses wasn't able to participate. If not Edwin Moses would've won 3 olympic gold medals.
Yes they boycotted the 1980 Olympics. Politics "Shouldn't have anything to do with Sport".
Slán go fóil
agreed...he the best ever in this event...so smooth with that 13 steps
legend
Moses own 94 cm inseam. He got great legs.
Johnson runs like Forest Gump
Felix is sooo cute.
What are the names?
What song is playing in background?
The greatest 😎😎😎
Edwin's 10 year stretch was the most dominant stretch of performances I ever witnessed in sports.
putting me in a 400 sucks but with hurdles...

Like if you came here after seeing him on the Wheaties cereal box?

run Caz bro that’s like saying 400h isn’t harder than shot putt because no one has competed in both at a high level.... Don’t be ignorant!
But shot and 400 apples and oranges. Ask a decathlete.

Godfrey brought me here
Cant wait for my friend dylan to beat the world record
Dylan Capwell?
Dylan atencio
All these athletes in the comment section XDDD
Except...Moses would have 3 Olympic gold medals if not for the 1980 Moscow boycott...and Sanchez is running times now that Moses ran 35 years ago. Sorry, dude...but you couldn't carry Moses' jock.
He didn't lose a race for 9 years, 9 months, and 9 days. Homie could get down the track. Oh yeah, he's a Physicist too.
Hardest event in Track. Ugh
Power of plant based diet!
