Every couple of years I go back and watch all the knife testing in the wilderness videos. Still my favorite outdoor videos in UA-cam.
Thank you much Mark, more to come with that adventure too
Well said!! Mr. nutnfancy stayed all!!!!!
Man you're right. Knife testing in the woods are the best vids.
If no new ones are up, I just go do it myself. Minus recording usually. But it's a vibe.
I edc the 4max Scout. At first, it feels heavy but I quickly got used to it. I work outdoors and farm quite a bit. The blade cuts well and sharpens up quick. I usually am touching up the blade on a regular basis. I got it for hard farm/outdoor use. I am very pleased with it considering the cost. It has held up for the last three years.
Good ole fashioned Nutnfancy video! Love it. Now for some wilderness adventures! We miss them.
I've got a Cold Steel Large Voyager. It's about half the weight, and it's still a big, strong, tough working knife.
Not nearly as strong tho
I have EDCd the CS 4 Max Scout for weeks at a time. It is a very large and bulky blade, but it is very ergonomic and the blade is ground in such a way that it still cuts well. I am seriously considering purchasing the CS 4 Max. Also, if you haven’t heard, CS is coming out with the 5 Max very soon! Jimi Slash just did a video featuring it at Blade Show 2023.
The knife videos are what brought me and keep me here on this channel. Especially the Cold Steel content. Thanks for keeping up with it.
SR1 lite is the best folder for the money ever produced hands-down. Look at JOE X's review. I would trust that knife for almost anything. HE couldn't break it. You carry that knife for peace of mind. I highly recommend it. It's only $40! It feels so quality when you hold it and experience the lock up and the steel thiccness.
100% love that thick boi
Just got one of these a couple weeks ago and love it. I daily carry it and use it every day at work. Awesome knife. Can't wait for the Cold Steel 5 Max to be available!
I edc the espada xl for several years. Just for giggles.
Me too. Anybody I showed it to (friendly not in self defense) were magnificently impressed because it's the most impressive "pocket" knife ever made imo.
The look in people's eyes when I whip out my voyager xl tanto serrated...... Priceless.
G10 or polished? Which steel? I have 27 different Espadas, 3 of them being the polished ones. I have the S35VN, Aus8 and CTS XHP.
@rad mines the cheap one in g10 still Uber sharp
Falchion ftw.
Love this knife! Been carrying it every day for a little over 2 years. Wouldn’t be without it. I live in a cabin in the mountains of Colorado and it saved my life. I was run down 2 years ago and attacked by a large female mountain lion. I was stupidly unarmed except for my knife. 6 attempts to plunge it into her chest failed as she had me on my back and on top of me. The 7th time it sunk deep into her leathery chest. Luckily she took off and I walked away with only some external scares. However, my 4-Max received a needed modification. It now sports a very sharp clip point that’s much better suited for penetration. I’m patiently waiting for the 5-max. It’ll receive the same treatment. Great review!
I edc the 4Max Scout 95% of the time. I like having a blade I can have absolute confidence in and maximum capability. 5mm thick blade, tri-ad lock you can bet your life on, and full steel liners means more weight (which you quickly get used to) but also an almost unbreakable knife.
Need a defensive tool? 4Max can.
Need a medium duty prybar? 4Max can.
Need to punch a hole in the hood of a car? 4Max can.
Bushcraft? Camp tasks? 4Max can.
I am reasonably confident that if you dropped this knife on a freeway and it spent an hour being run over by cars before you found it again, it would still be functional when you picked it up.
It's overbuilt and tough, which is nothing new for CS, but one thing that really surprised me when I first got it in my hand is just how comfortable the handle is. I have large hands (9" breadth) and this knife fits very naturally and has no hotspots; you could absolutely use it all day long and your hands wouldn't even notice. The handle is long too, so you can choke back a little bit to get more of a swing for chopping, but it also has a nice little half choil nestled right up below the edge, so you can choke up on it for feather sticks or whatever else you need.
If I could only carry one folder to fulfill all roles for the rest of my life, this is the one I'd pick, hands down; and for an $80-90 price tag, you're out of your mind if you don't get one just to have it.
Cold Steel is the only place in the world where you can even get close to this much knife for a price like that.
Thank you SO. MUCH. For all the KRVs over the years! And for helping me select my Benchmade Contego 3 years ago... still EDC.
I have a Spartan Cold Steel, original version (back when Cool Steel was Cold Steel). Everyone thinks I’m crazy for carrying a big knife. But, it saved my life when I was accosted by three street punks and a pit bull. They threatened me but backed off when I pulled the Spartan.
I edc a Cold Steel Code 4 in CTS-XHP. Great size to carry comfort ratio.
That blade steel is 👌🏼, it’s been my favorite from CS
I have both a cold steel 4max scout, and I just got an italian made cpm 20cv 4max. I've carried the 4max scout at work, and used it outside a little as well. It can chop through a green shipping strap in one blow, and that's not a small feat for a pocket knife. I've also used it to cut tree branches (small ones of course). It's an awesome pocket knife.
It should probably be noted that the reason for the design of the clip is that Andrew Demko specifically prioritized avoiding it giving any hot spots, and in that, it definitely succeeds. I agree though, I also would have preferred it be more deep-carrying.
slept on gem right here boys. i liked it so much i bought 2 of them a while back
I edc this 99% of the time with a microtech ultratech tanto. I use the ultratech for light duty stuff and the 4 max for everything else. Love my 4 max
I did four years of JROTC back in 80’s at Grissom High in Huntsville. My son and daughter followed in my footsteps and are in JROTC at the newly built Grissom High. They love it as much as I did.
Yes I EDC my 4Max scout. I switch up my EDC frequently, so not everyday, but a lot. I went through about a six month period where that was all I carried. Yes I have battoned with it and it took it like a champ! It's still like new and always freshly stroped sharp enough to shave with (and I do mean always). I had to remove the clip to smooth out the scales under the clip so it wouldn't destroy my pants, but otherwise, I love it.
August 4th 2023, actually carrying this knife right now. Love this thing
I'm 6'3, 225lbs. I edc the Scout daily. It fits in my pocket, but nothing else does.
Good review. I'm a bit surprised you didn't draw similarities to the Voyager Large series. 4" pick your blade shape, big molded handle that envelopes the hand with a non goofy clip. I think a bit less $$ too.
I've got this knife and I use it sometimes for EDC but primarily for day hikes where I'm just going to be out there for 4-6 hours it does what a Becker BK2 can do but folds
I recently bought a CRKT Fossil with a four inch blade super sharp out of the box beautiful scales and assisted opening but it only comes in at 5.95oz! Definitely my new favorite edc knife
The 4Max Scout is my EDC work knife and I can't imagine anything better besides a 5" version.
Makes a great hammer and a shovel, never say full liners aren't worth the weight, most G10 knives would have disintegrated after the things I've put this through.
(BTW the 6 inch Hold Out is my around the house EDC, you will never find a more capable letter opener. This thing slaughters amazon boxes so fast it should be a war crime.)
I do EDC the 4Max Scout! I have in my pocket though not often. It does ride in my EDC bag all the time! I’m a bigger guy and it’s sized well for my mitts. I like how you can choke up on it, too.
I switch between 4 knives: 4 max scout, sr1 lite, ti-lite 6in, and counterpoint 6in. The most carried being the SR1 Lite for work. And always the sog powerpint multitool
OK I edc this knife when I'm at work as a utility blade. I don't care how many videos or reviews you watch on this knife, until you open the box and have it in your hand can you truly understand and appreciate its heft and beefyness. For a 4" knife it's massive and I have really large hands. I have carried it in non work clothes but it is damn heavy. A civivi conspirator is my casual edc. Anyway this 4max is an awesome blade.
I actually agree with you on the lighter weight EDC knives. I have a Spyderco Para2 and ZT 770CF Tat I daily. I did however buy a Microtech SOCOM Bravo with tanto blade because I just thought that was a super cool knife. After owning it for a while I decided to daily it just because I just thought it was so cool. Big weight difference you can FEEL in your pocket, but it just makes me happy to carry a cool knife like that. It just feels super durable and I just get giddy over tanto blades 😁
I carry a 4max scout and it’s great when it’s not in my pocket I carry a Voyage XL.
Looking forward for the 5Max.
I just returned the Cold steel mayhem it had too much stuff going on but the 4max and 5Max seem to have a blade better suited for all around use
Carry a 4MAX daily and have done so for the last 8 months or so, sometimes I grab something smaller like my Hogue Deka when im in lighter clothing, but man, I love my 4MAX
I have both the 62RM and 62RN, haven’t really bought any since Lynn sold CS in 2019
Colonel curious to hear your take on the Kershaw Iridium. Possibly the best edc pocket knife 2023 in my humble opinion. Looking forward to the table top review.
A good ole’ fashion TNP KRV!
I edc'd a 4max for a while but I find myself usually going for the AD10 instead, not because the 4max was too big for my liking but it doesn't leave enough room in my pocket for my phone.
4 Max is a great knife, another blessing bestowed by the holy Demko
Cool, I just got one of these too. The clip is way too tight and texture on frn is too course. I put some cotton material over a flat head and slowly and carefully pried the clip up until it bent just enough to make the clip easier to use. Next I plan on sanding the frn a little smoother under the the clip.
Love that cold steels come sharp out of the box 👍👍 shame when companies ship dull blades.. should be razor sharp!
Demko just revealed a new series of XL knives (unofficially named Megalo Lock), at blade show you can see the 6" version with hollow grind drop point, full titanium handle with oversized shark lock
I don't carry that particular model, but I carry a Cold Steel because there is NOTHING as strong as the triad lock. It's like a fixed blade.
I own two benchmade 945's, a hogue ritter and two 4-max elites. The 4-max stays on me the most despite being the least easy to carry and actuate. It isn't my most fancy knife, it's just so big and tough. Sleeping with my blade open to break in the spring and practicing total one handed operation has been a joy.
I carry the 6 in Luzon I found from a Nutnfancy review a few years back. I carry it backwards so it wave deploys blade forward from my left hand pocket.
i alternate carrying mine depending on what i think i need sometimes i love it
Since 2021 carry large luzon & tnp dagger pocket knife in same pocket but gonna upgrade the luzon to the espada
I do carry a 4 Max Scout because I wear a proper nylon webbing or thick leather belt every day and yes it takes some pocket space but even in normal blue jeans I carry it… along with a 5 inch full size series 70 1911 and yes it sucks to conceal carry but I do it and I open carry the same pistol as much as possible!
I have both, the SR1 Lite and the 4Max Scout. You are spot on. I have carried the Scout once or twice and it is reserved as a backup or day trip wilderness blade. SR1 Lite is in rotation wearing a SnaggleToothMF “wave” opener and clipped for left pocket carry.
The new GSM premium version of the 4Max, to me, is not worth the added cost. The old premium where. Difference? Old version was originally USA made (later Italy), frame pivot and hardware where larger, a 20CV blade steel and classic tan Micarta scales. The new GSM version is the same frame, pins and hardware as the Scout , made in Taiwan, with a down grade in steel to S35vn, and tiger striped green and black scales. So did they pass on the cost saving to the consumer… nope … they increase the price $120 - $150 more than the old premium version … and that ain’t due to supply issues either! Pining for the days when Lynn owned CS! Thanks for sharing!
I don't EDC my 5.5 Talwar all the time, but when the temps are cooler it's not cumbersome, have lusted for the Max since I first saw it. These "lite" versions only real appeal to me for a bug out bag, tool bag, car knife or something along those lines where it's not in my rotation.
For less weight and more blade, the Voyager XL is a better choice. No way I'm carrying that heavy of a 4" blade.
The Holdout was a way underrated knife. I wasn't so sold on the looks of it but I liked the specs on the holdout2 so I bought one anyways. It really grew on me.
Voyager will break way before this though.
Can’t believe you never whipped out the voyager xl with your pocket mod Nutn. I love that big knife
The Native 5 in my pocket has 4Max envy right now. My 940’s would too.
My EDC for Deployment aboard the IKE. Also I like the weight and that Fat Pocket Clip.
I have daily carried this knife. It’s a bit much for everyday but it’s not unreasonable to imagine it being the perfect fit some some folk’s one and only knife. I almost wish they would make an ultralight version with a thinner blade stock and linerless g10 scales.
I picked up a 4max scout by accident. Was in a hurry and needed a pocket knife for my job. When it is on a white background and is offering Aus 10A steel for under $75. I thought it would be much smaller, because I wasn't paying attention. . I ended up using it as an EDC because I am a copy tech and it can chop up ABS parts as well as shave mylars like a razor. My only issue is it is a bit clunky, especially when folding. I strop all my knives. A big, heavy blade. With a razor sharp edge. You have to be especially careful.
I daily a 4max scout, I have 3 of em. Idk what it is exactly but I just enjoy knowing I have the capability of almost a small fixed blade in my pocket, and it feels so great in hand. I carry a much thinner, lightweight knife as a primary knife for simple tasks but the 4max scout is always on hand in my off hand pocket should I need to “abuse” a knife because I know it can handle some rough use tasks. Not long ago midway had the 4max scout on sale for $49.99 a insane deal! Hence why I own 3 😅. I’ve been experimenting with different degree angles on one and at 18 degrees it’s actually a pretty slicey knife given the blade stock and intended purpose.
I have two, the Scout and Elite, I carry and thrash both. I’m a firefighter who dose construction on my days off.
Haha, i went air force jrotc then army route.
Scout is my one blade does it all knife, love it.
Also love the spartan, which eats all the shrubberies and trees in the yard.
Thanks for showing it and the others, a scout and sr1 lite tanto would be an intimidating two-fer, although I do like your clippy version.
Still carrying my American Lawman since you reviewed it 10 or so years ago.
I would carry the 4max scout but it is not legal to conceal more the 3.5” blade in my state. I can legally and quite easily carry it on my property though and it’s not really too bad in a pocket to be honest. I usually conceal a full 3.5” blade almost every day so it’s not much longer but it is quite a bit more weight. For many people, this knife would be way to big for them to comfortably carry in a pocket. In a way once you get to this size, I think its kind of nice to be honest because it’s long and wide so it fills your pocket instead or rolling and tumbling around in your pocket. Thus far, this is my favorite cold steel knife and I love the dimensions and shape of the thing. My biggest complaint is that the finish on the handle feels like sand paper. I have considered smoothing it out some since I don’t need a bunch of stippling. I have work hands (not clammy keyboard lotion hands) that are rough and will provide the necessary friction. Lol
It’s my favorite edc. I run it no pocket clip with a huge lanyard
Love my Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter, blade shape on this looks very similar
I have a "real" 4Max, and was carrying it regularly, but the clip is way too flimsy for the size of knife. Replaced it with an SR1 for daily carry. You could jack your car with the clip on that one. Can't figure how they get the clips so different on two big knives. Additionally, the clip on my 4Max is riveted on I believe. SR1 with od handles and S35 is a perfect combo.
I modified the tip into a Bowie clip point. EDC it everyday in my area
Bought one thanks dude!!!!!!
I carry it for 2 yrs now. And I have a 1911 as backup. Next EDC is the ad 10 lite
I carry some large folders, and as an older guy I've moved to suspenders to keep my jeans up when carrying.
What is the knife sitting at the top during the video? I really like the look of it.
I carry one of these every day. I own three of these. My other edc blade is the cold steel xl voyager in drop point blade
Terrific review.
Great review nutn.
😮I tried and went back to my recon 1 that I carried for around 10 years
Recon! Got 1 Large of each blade style. Got a couple XL Tanto Recons in chest rigs.
I do carry my 4 max made in Italy version from time to time, it's a beast
I carry an AD-10 which is chonky. It whips up very sharp and you’re never coming up short.
Cold Steel Voyager XL Vaquero Serrated w/ an aluminum Snaggletooth, & Cold Steel Kobun Serrated here...
I Have a Voyager XL Tanto w/ the Snaggletooth as a back-up as well.
I have a bunch of the Lansky's to sharpen the serrations too.
Looking forward to your review on the cold steel Mayhem
Hey Nutn, they showed the prototype of the 5Max at Blade Show!!!
I'm definitely a loarge knoif edc bloke meself. I mis cs knives usually by sanding down the handle scale where the clip contacts. Saves your pocket and hem.
If theres one thing cold steel does that almost no one else does, its give you a pocket sword that actually fits into a mans pocket.
Still the undisputed best knife reviewer for me at least.
I edc my 4max scout whenever I can't edc a fixed blade at work. Ya it's really heavy, it's really fun to carry.
Hey dudes! I still do a lot of knife reviews, they are usually posted on the B Channel here in UA-cam. Please subscribe here: www.youtube.com/@LtColNutnfancy/videos Also TNPrs who donate to me in Patreon make the continuation of TNP possible! www.patreon.com/Nutnfancy. The Cold Steel Max Scout is a great knife btw, very manly!
I edc it i do lawn care its heavy and sometimes it gets annoying but i love it honestly it does everything i could want to and i got for 40 bucks of craigslist im really impressed with it really its a tank lol
Makes me think about my Camillus Beast. Very big very cool!
M1 Garand video JROTC was mentioned
I edc a recon 1 tanto (the larger one).
EDC's just fine for me. Definitely view it as a wilderness blade too...also concrete wilderness.
Cold Steel Recon 1 Aus8 or Aus 10 is the best folding knife ever. 4 inch model. What beats it? Try me. Ive carried every knife in that size and the Recon 1 has always been the beast of the crop.
Yeah Baby ‼️
I sure do carry this MONSTER as My EDC‼️
@nutnfancy you can get the big boy 4 max on Midway for under 200 bones on occasion. Worth a grab.
I’ve been having a cold steel rajah 2 for nearly a year now, I always forget I have it in my pocket
I edc this. I'm that freak. Put a hair shaving edge on the 10a and it holds. Of course I pair with smaller blades with better letter opening qualities. But when it's time to baton something I put a retainer clip through the hole just for added finger safety. Haven't had a triad lock ever fail but you will lose every finger in one second if you are hard using these things and it does. Great knife though and I was wondering if you would ever do this review. Very validating.
I carry the 4 Max elite and recon1 edc and an AK-47 field knife or a recon scout edc..works fine.. barely notice the 4max tbh
I use it to break down pallets at work.
I have two cs 4max (4maxs’ 4maxi ehhh what ever the plural is) in 20cv from Italy. I carry it in a custom leather pocket slip . It’s not me edc but I throw it in the pocket every now and then 😊
I carry an AD-10 and I don't notice it at all. Awesome knife.
My issue with many folding blades is that they are not very comfortable in the hand. Just thin and flat.
I think I was JROTC at Theodore the same time you were at Murphy, 86-90. Small world.
I’ve got a KnifeCenter exclusive in S35VN. Bought it because I didn’t know anything about Nitro V and it was just $100.
It’s got a satin finish and a black aluminum handle. I swapped out the pocket clip for a titanium clip and I think I want to get some green micarta scales and give the blade an acid bath and give it a dark stonewash finish. 😬😬😬
I carry a CS Spartan that I shaved down to 7.9 oz. (Vid on my channel). Also common to carry is an Espada Large, Boker Plus Stingray and Spyderco Pacific Salt Lc200n but the Spartan gets the most love by far.
Nutn needs to revisit Pacific Salt!
What exactly *is* that top folding knife, the tip-down folder?
I like the AD10 better. Probablyvmy favorite cold steel knife along with the recon 1, Talwar and Tufflite
I frequently carry the 4max scout because I bought it to use and not collect, however I give my AD-10 plenty of pocket time too. If you're going to buy something just to put on a shelf just to look at. What's the point in having it. just get a free catalog and look at the pictures.
