Best Horizontal and Scout Carry Knives - Tested and Reviewed
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 сер 2024
- We have tested dozens of horizontal and scout carry knives over the last three years. We cover six of them in this video, but you can find a lot more information about many more horizontal carry knives in this article on Nothing But Knives.
www.nothingbutknives.com/best...
The knives covered in this article are as follows:
0:00 We'd Rather be Writing
0:37 ESEE Izula 2
1:43 SOG Altair
2:42 Reiff F4 - www.nothingbutknives.com/reif...
3:32 Condor SBK - www.nothingbutknives.com/cond...
4:27 Off Grid Hoglet
5:27 Bradford Guardian 3 - www.nothingbutknives.com/brad...
Our hands on tests of these knives included a variety of tasks from chopping, to carving with a mix of batoning and feather sticking. We also opened a lot of beer bottles with them.
Most of the knives we chose for this video have blades under 4 inches, because we find that smaller knives are more convenient for horizontal carry. However, we have talked to many folks who like to scout or horizontal carry larger knives, so we included two of our favorite survival knives.

I love the guy popping brews with every knife except the Bradford 😂
Ha ha. We tried.
6:34 Bradford on the belt.
I love it. This is so much better (atleast half of it) than seeing a bunch of hard tails chopping wood. These are real selling points for real people
Thanks for watching Ricky. We tend to concentrate on the selling points we care about most. Chopping porn only goes so far.
Don't know what I like better. the REAL review of actual knife use or the narration. Keep up the good work! I personally don't like horizontal carry because of my toothpick waist either. But I'm working on it.
Hey! This is fantastic!! Great video!! I came across your original scout carry article over a year ago and loved it! I saved it on my homepage on my phone and check back often for updates!! I have referenced your website multiple times when considering new knife purchases!! It’s really great to find this on UA-cam! 🤘🏼
Man, you knew about us before we were cool. Thanks for reading us all these years.
Love the sense of humor in this video. Great job!
Thanks Brian.
First video I've watched from this channel and I found it hilarious as well as informative!!
One thing to know with Scout / small of the back carry is that is you ever fall on your back or are thown to your back, you can suffer a catastrophic spinal injury. As a retired Tac medic, I always taught that no gear should be directly over the spine for this reason.
That's a good tip. Generally when we scout carry the knife ends up more to one side than the other just because of belt loop placement, but spinal injury is definitely a good danger to keep in mind when gearing up.
@@nothingbutknives2286 I agree. Retired chiropractor.
Thank you for pointing out that legitimate risk. I recently suggested that caution on a different knife channel, and I got a bunch of folks calling me an idiot.
@@TrilobitesRTasty It's not a legitimate risk. Show me multiple incidents of this happening with a knife in scout carry. You're more likely to crack your head open and get a TBI than to have a catastrophic spine injury.
@@jaykwonzzz Believe what you like.
Ok, I love this video…. Narration, knives, and a real review! Instantly subscribed
Thanks for watching and subscribing.
Cool video - been looking for something about scout carry - thanks
I have not enjoyed a UA-cam video, this much, in a long time! Keep up the great work!
We're trying. Thanks for watching.
Kudos to the drinker, he shows the true and proper knife use. BK7 is my scout carry and the Jarosz
🍺 Cheers
First time I've watched anything from you guys. I f-ing love it!
Thanks Craig.
Holy shit! Great editing, writing, videography, and reviews. Toss in some chuckles, beer, and occasional eye candy?? Take my sub ya bastards!
Ha ha. Glad you found us. Thanks for watching and the sub.
Love the way you made this video, type of humor is great. Thanks guys
Thanks for watching.
Brother you are hilarious…….this is just the kind of content I love delivered with kindness and joy……lololol please keep it up. Thanks for sharing 😎
Thanks Patrick. Much appreciated.
Loved the vid gents, loved the depressed humour. Subbed, keen to see more!
This is an amazingly entertaining review filled with useful and beer-friendly insights. I hope your viewership increases rapidly if this is the dry yet palatable personality of your work. Thank you very much! Yeeha! Just checked your text review of the fixed-blade D2 version of the Civivi Elementum - well worth the read. Glad I found your channel 🐸
Thanks Mud Thang. Much appreciated. Yea Civivi did a great job with the fixed blade version of the Elementum.
Love the dry delivery and actual examples of what the knives were intended for. The voice reminds me of a certain Knife Bro. Liked and subscribed.
Thanks Eddie. We do like the Knife Bro.
Finally. The most realistic video I’ve seen on UA-cam. Ever. Thank you for making this.
Thanks for watching.
I love that I found this video. I've read this exact article Le 2 twice in the last 6 years or so and have thought about scout edc for quite awhile. Esee don't do it for me, because I don't want a knife I have to oil to preserve, but I was damn. Lose to pulling the trigger on a gaurdian here recently.
We've probably recommended the Guardian 3 more than anything in this video (or the article). It's weird. The Izula 2 is one of the few designs ESEE doesn't make a stainless steel version of yet. It's a shame. We'd love to see it in S35VN.
I’m a huge fan of horizontal carry for fixed blades.
Although I don’t buy knives or sheaths as I make my own.
I actually prefer horizontal scout carry for large field knives for a couple reasons.
1. Puts the knife in an easily accessible, out of the way spot.
2. In the field, the strong side position is taken up by a pistol, and having the knife weak side carry just isn’t as easy to get at.
Great video 👍🏻
Thanks for the input. This will come in handy next time somebody flames us for suggesting larger knives for horizontal carry.
@@nothingbutknives2286 to me, weak side vertical carry is, for the most part one of the most inconvenient field carry methods out there.
Much like with a D/A automatic knife, (which is absolutely the most useful pocket knife out there) the scout carry is awesome because you can be holding something with your weak hand, be able to get your blade out, do the cutting, and be able to put it back ONE HANDED.
Try that vertical weak side carry.
Whether you're a rugged outdoorsman, or a raging alcoholic. These are the knives for you. 👍
🤣That should have been the title.
"we're working on the waistline thing, give us a few months" THE best segway ever. Genius!
This vid made me check out your site.
Glad I did. Great job all over.
And subscribed.
Happy to have you around.
I can not stop laughing at how much beer is consumed in this video.
Great video. Love your guys style.
Thanks Thunderstone Wilderness Ventures.
Hi there folks.! It's 10.35pm om Monday 5th June, just finished work, thought we browse the Tube & ran into your funny & entertaining channel but yet informative. Congrats, got yourself a new sub from Australia. It's nice to get entertained while watching something educational. Stay safe. Keep rockin"..!
Thanks for watching. We didn't realize it until your comment, but tired Australians just getting off work in the middle of the night was audience we were hoping to get.
Loved this!
Cool Video 👍
Thank U for the Info and links 👍
The Condor SBK will be ordered✌️
Thanks for watching. We have had a lot of camping and hiking fun with the SBK.
Good video man! I see and respect the priorities.
🤣Thanks Jesse.
Very well done video guys.
Thanks Josh.
Great side commentary. Nicely done.
Thanks Mason.
That was awesome! I actually didn’t watch the video and just listened to the narration. That was cracking me up! Def worth a Sub
Thanks for listening, Troy.
Nice video, with a good selection of blades.
I scout carry a TOPS Brakimo or a TOPS Prather War Bowie. I carry rear, iwb, at about a 30 degree angle. Thus only the handle is visible.
I’ve had no problems with this carry even though the PWB is somewhat big. The angle, and being inside the waistband makes it so comfortable that I almost forget it’s there.
This is the first video of yours that has hit my feed. Your channel looks interesting, so I’ve sub’d.
👍🏼👍🏼
Damn. This comment is gonna result in us spending more money.
@@nothingbutknives2286
Both those knives are worth every penny 👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸
Outstanding Video guys! Thank You for keeping it Real
Thanks for watching.
Guys. I actually read the article bevor viewing the video. It was absolutely entertaining. Thanx
O you were the one who read it. Thanks Daniel.
I need a good knife to open beers like that guy all day/night 😂
The excitement and joy in his voice is infectious.
Nice summary on this topic, subscribed
Thanks for the sub. Appreciate it.
great sense of humor, great video
Thanks Joshua.
Sick video, love the flat affect. I would also recommend the Gerber strong arm for scout carry.
Thanks. We included the StrongArm in the article.
@@nothingbutknives2286 the article is worth checking out, as it is a far more comprehensive list- I like that it’s being continuously updated. I will look out for your full review of the strongarm, it’s one of my favorite knives.
excellent narration. i enjoyed it! I'm even going to visit your website because I DO like to read more than watch videos.
my favorite horizontal carry is just below my belt buckle but i find it is best to carry multiple knives so this is just a good way to free up pocket space
Cool video. Keep em coming. Hey try out the twisted assisted gambler. Stout blade. I put on a couple kydex loops for horizontal carry. Love it.
Thanks Juan. Looks like a great knife. The optional handle scales are an added plus.
@@nothingbutknives2286 yeah its a sweet spot knife for me.
I’m going to read the full article. I’m old enough to enjoy reading. It is my preferred way of getting information. You don’t waste your time as this video pointed me to your article. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and reading, Jamel.
THE BEST KNIFE REVIEW video I have EVER SEEN!!
Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.
Keep doing what you're doing 💯
Thanks JT. We will.
Pretty simple: The clip is two sided so one part goes inside your pants so the sheath wont go down into your pants when you put the knife back in, and the second part with the hook goes onto your belt so the sheath won’t rise up when you take the knife out!
I am not trying to be a Tops fanboy, but they do make two of my favorites for scout carry.
For EDC, the Little Bro is my top pick. For woods, I like the Tom Brown Scout. It is a great general purpose knife, good for bush work or EDC carry.
I have the Bradford too, and like it, but I hate the sheath for it. I prefer a sheath that lets you get a better grip on the handle, and the Bradford sheath requires the knife to ride tucked way inside. (It does look much better on your model than it does on my waist though!)
Great video and super funny
I carry a CKRT Minimalist Wharncliffe up side down making it super fast and easy too grab by the braid. I also carry a pocket knife and a multi tool that will do whatever the minimalist won’t do, their just slower to get out.
Sounds like a great combo.
This may be the best knife review video I've ever seen.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the video. I read the article too.
You are the one. Thanks for reading and watching.
This dry conversation had me LMAO. The zero fox given script is cherry. Love it
Thanks for watching.
" We're working on the waistline thing, just give us a couple of months" as he chugs brews, Love it!!!😂😂😂
Thanks for watching. It helps us afford more beer for our expanding waistlines.
Which of these would you recommend for left handed scout carry?
Liked the video. The Hogue Extrak now has a sheath & clip that make it easy to carry. It is more of a skinning knife, but I EDC it.
Yeah, we've drooled over the Extrak a couple of times. That thing looks sweet.
Good Information
I enjoyed that way more than I expected. Lol. Well played.
Hey there, I've got a Glock FM81 knife and I've been looking for some sheath to wear it horizontal - are there horizontal sheaths that'd fit such a knife (6.5" blade) at all or do I need to look for something custom?
Alternatives I think would be forward leaning belt-worn sheath (that blade is a bit too long to wear it vertical, for me anyway) but I'd really like to figure out some horizontal sheath.
That's a tough one because it's such a long blade, but you could try Ka Bar's Cordura sheaths. Pretty sure they make one that fits their 7" models like the USMC Bowie.
The only other option I think of us besides that is an after market custom maker like Armatus.
My favorite scout carry EDC knives are my Bradford G3 Sheepsfoot and my Esee 3. Both with Kydex sheaths with soft loops. I'm a bigger guy, so the Esee 3 doesnt bother me. I prefer the Kydex for the G3 because I've had issues with the leather stretching and losing any retention.
I just ordered the new Guardian 3.2, cant wait to get that on my belt soon!
Sounds like you are set for horizontal carry.
@@nothingbutknives2286 oh yea, I've got more scout carry knives than I have belts!
EDC an orange Izula II since 2019. It is abused for sure. It has never let me down. Thank you ESEE!
its a piece of metal. not your father
@@FranklinHicks-qs4gs I cannot find any place where I mentioned my father. Please enlighten me as to where it is.
@Ekalb2000 wow. Even slower than I thought. So sad my boy
@@FranklinHicks-qs4gs Cannot answer my question can you. Have a nice day.

nice knives. Love your humor
Subbing for your dry realistic sense of humor and because by the time you got to the cleaver blade I was like damn this dude gotta be getting drunk by now haha 🤘😎
Thanks Brian. You are correct.
I'm surprised there isn't a Tkell knife in this video as in my opinion he makes amazing knives with wonderful horizontal carry sheaths. I love the Nickel Boron finish on his knives. If you haven't already check out Tkell knives!
The site that you made and give us here its preety pog
I have the Bradford Guardian 3 and i like it (it's the only horizontal carry i have), but it is hard with a inch and a half wide belt to get on. Sharp knife and holds an edge good.
Yeah, we were having the same problem getting it on even regular sized leather belts. It works really well with a 5.11 Tactical belt, though.
It's like Advanced Knife Bro is your twin brother!
Great video, cheers!
Thanks Stuart
@Nothing But Knives I just started reading your on line reviews, funny as f@ck 🤣
Best knife review I’ve watched, makes me want to hang with you guys!
Thanks for watching.
I like that sling chair in the first review. Let’s make one of those!!
Man i gotta admit, I'm really surprised you made it through making this and you didn't fall asleep
Sleep happened shortly after.
@@nothingbutknives2286 Indica will do that to ya from what I understand lol
You guys are funny as hell! Great video! Thank you!
Thanks for watching, Jim.
Every time you cracked a cold one I laughed harder
It's definitely the beers for me lol. Great video
Thanks Evan.
Do you have an upside down carry sheath for knives like we do in SF?
Nice selection for review - but what about shivworks blade? I would submit it exceeds edc requirements more so than some of the larger knives in this video...
We will check it out.
😂😂😂😂Great video guys. I was laughing from about 30 seconds in.
I have carried this way for over 30yrs. Everybody I have seen make the same mistake and so quite carrying scout. The knife must be above the beltline 1 to 2 inches. You can do this with a TekLok belt clip or make your own out of 16 gauge sheet metal. I have done both. It simply works. Mount the sheath to the inside so it is up close to your back. I have been searched several times while carrying a 4" blade with a standard T-Shirt and they didn't notice the knife. This works for me.
Thanks for the DIY tip.
My favorite horizontal knife is and will always be the Tom Brown tracker.
We've got a soft spot for that design too, but we don't take it out much.
Great video! What is the knife at the 6:56 mark at the flask share scene?
That's the Off Grid Alpha Dog. And if memory serves, the flask was bottled in bond Evan Williams, just in case you were curious about that.
Like the vid!! But how hard is it to put the knives in the sheath when its on your back? Do the sheaths even make a difference to difficulty? How noticeable are they in everyday carry, when driving or working? Might be some good talking points for next time.
Thanks for watching, Zedd. We get more into that sweet sheath detail in the article on our site. We probably should have talked about that kind of thing more in the video but we... didn't feel like it.
I did read the article. Thanks.
Thanks for reading.
LOL, great video (even though you'd rather write) ...an informative, and entertaining, review of 6 knives in 7 minutes instead of 1 knife in 30 minutes! I have the Guardian 3.2 which is an improved version of the 3
We don't have enough swagger for a 30 minute video.
Ever gone on a hunting trip with the bros? There's more beer than hunting
Nice video guys, can you tell something about the M1 Backpacker Pro from White River?
We haven't had a chance to use it in the field yet, but we messed with it at Blade Show. It is pretty awesome, but pretty much everything White River releases is good.
@@nothingbutknives2286 can’t wait to see a review! Keep it up :)
Do you guys get the Boker Bark Beetle in the U.S.? It’s an awesome little camp carry and EDC.
Looks like most US vendors have it listed. Neat looking little thing. We might have to try that out.
great video!
how do you guys rate the white river M1?
We've only gotten to handle that knife at trade shows, but it feels pretty solid. It seems like something that could do a ton of work for how small and light it is.
You should try my Esee 3, you can scout, hang, or put it on your backpack it's my favorite fixed to date. I also have the Esee 5 for batoning and bigger work, that I hang from the right side belt.
That's a pretty good pairing. We love ESEE knives too. It's just hard to fit all the knives we love into one video.
Great video , and I beg to differ.
There are those of us out here that do read.
In fact , I tend to pause and or mute the video and hit " Transcript" On most videos.
Having said that , I did watch and listen to yours.
Thats impressive considering the poor audio quality of this video. Thanks for watching and listening.
I'm looking for a hohorizontally carry knife for a backup. Any thoughts?
That totally depends on your budget and primary use. The Bonds Creek Badger is probably the one we carry the most.
Love this informational video but damn bro chill out on the beers lol :)
Just messing around, I found it amusing
You may like the DPx Gear HEST.
That one is on our list. DPX is a great company.
Great bottle opener on this one.
Mahalo for the video update, you missed the best horizontal carry though . Check out T.Kell knives - Night Stalker
Yea that looks sweet. We are gonna have to do another video.
I read your article then found this video :)
Very entertaining, thanks

This is great 👍
Thanks.
I was noting the amount of beers per knife and was going to suggest a flask of brown snake water when low and behold one showed up…that compelled me to subscribe…nice job on the knives also! Be well!
Thanks Stuart.
Subtle humor, wonderful.
I carry an Esee 4 in a Sagewood leather sheath cross draw horizontal position. Why? It's comfortable and I can draw it out with either hand. My pistol stays on my right side. But if my right hand becomes disabled for whatever reason i have an option.
are you a real life cowboy? that's a lot of weaponry to carry around everyday
That sounds like a great set-up.
