- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT YOUR 12V BATTERY AND HYBRID BATTERY (ORANGE SAFETY PLUG) FIRST! FOR THIS JOB! P0401 egr cleaning,
MY2DAYLIFE! IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES DONE TO YOU OR YOUR VEHICLE! THIS IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY!
1. Don't think you need to disconnect either battery. I could be wrong, and it's maybe better safe than sorry, but this is purely mechanical intervention, don't see any problems. I didn't disconnect, nothing happened.
2. Do clean the intake manifold too. It's the last leg of the EGR passages, and has small diameter passages that clog with carbon. Cylinder one passage typically clogs first, and the head gaskets typically fail at cylinder one first.
3. Please: don't rinse hydrocarbon solvent with water. That water ends up either in a sanitary sewer (down the drain), or dumped in the street or storm drain. If using such solvents, wipe it out with rags, allow them to evaporate, bag and dispose with garbage. If you've got a quantity to dispose of, pour into a shallow tray with kitty litter, and again, allow to evaporate, bag, garbage.
4. These days you see mechanics wearing gloves no matter what they're doing, even purely clean jobs. You really should wear gloves, when fishing stuff out of your solvent bath, especially if doing this a lot. It might actually melt some gloves...
5. For the EGR cooler, consider soaks in concentrated powdered Oxi-Clean solution. Cork one end of the cooler, mix the Oxi with hot tap water, pour in, let sit about an hour. It'll bubble up, with a froth of carbon. After an hour, rinse thoroughly, and repeat. It'll take about 5 sessions thus, will come out like new.
6. Instead of clamping coolant hoses (which doesn't really work), try draining 2 qts of coolant (at the radiator drain spigot) into a clean container. The coolant level drop completely below the EGR components, no spillage. There will be a little coolant trapped at back corner of the cooler; just lift it out without tipping, then pour that little bit into what you previously drained. When everything is done, just pour all the coolant back into reservoir. If you have the model years with coolant bleed bolt, have it open when refilling. If not, leave the topmost coolant hose off the egr cooler, does the same venting. I found that was enough to do, with a couple of days driving the level got back to normal.
And when doing the intake manifold, leave the throttle body coolant lines attached: there's enough play, that you can just lift the throttle body off, and tie to inverter.
Some torque values from Repair manuals:
The studs at EGR valve/cooler: 7 ft/lb (require E8 Torx socket)
Nuts/bolts at EGR valve/cooler: 15 ft/lb
Pipe between EGR valve and intake manifold: 7 ft/lb
Intake manifold nuts/bolts to cylinder head: 21 ft/lb
Throttle body hold down nuts/bolts: 7 ft/lb
Throttle body studs: 44 in/lb (3.7 ft/lb) (require E6 Torx socket)
@Mendel Leisk, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I appreciate your feedback an the torque specs! Thanks for watching! 👍
***Some new cars, as Toyota hybrid cars move engine parts simply by opening and closing the driver's door.
Disconnecting the battery prevents mechanical parts from moving automaticaly, if it happens you need to have reconfigure the enginer...
@@madriditunes7021it doesn’t move engine parts… that’s your brake booster/pump filling the actuator with brake fluid.
Having done this in the past I would say it's far easier to drop half the coolant out of the radiator there is a drain tap to do this . Put it into a clean bucket and you can just reuse it when your done... as for cleaning the cooler . Get a pressure washer on it with a jet end. .. you will clean it in minutes not days 😂 ... worked a treat think my car had 200k before it got blocked up shut the engine down but the electric side still worked so I was able to get it home I was only 1/2 mile away so that was lucky 👍👍👍
I got a face full of coolant
Wish I saw this video 3 months ago. My 2014 is in the shop with the head off at 117,000 miles. The VERY first problem we have ever had but it is a whopper. Needed new plugs, coil packs, injectors, PCV, and EGR valve. Misfire on cold start and finally deduced the head gasket as well. What I have heard is that if all of the maintenance in the EGR had been done 20k or so ago the head gasket likely would be fine. It is the increased pressure that can pop and already weak HG. Praying this does it. Love this car. Thanks for a great video. Thumbs up and new sub.
I realky like people like yourself who show how anyone with some time and patience can tackle a problem. Very thorough and informative. I eould like to suggest as an viewers perspective, if you can use led lights to better show the area you're working on and inside of holes. Your camera angles were great for working in a such a tight spot. You did on several occasions, showed a still shot of the area you were working on so we could see what you were trying to reach or point out. That was really helpful. Also, after you took the parts out, you showed how they sit on the engine and included any necessary information. The one piece of practical information that I really appreciated was that you recommended having a spare part, clean and ready to go. Such a great idea! Very well done thank you very much. And maybe you have some knowledge on the prius horn not working. Changing out the clock spring, the relay, the horns themselve all seem to be trual and error until one or the other works. Again thank you.
I also did this to my car. In order to solve the build-up, I let it soak in dieseloil, that works really well. Another very important step is to dissasemble the intake manifold and clean that as well. In fact, clean the whole intakesystem. Do that before you get codes, it will prevent headgasket failure. Also change your oil more often than usual. I do it every 10k kilometers or 7k miles
Definitely right on that
I've watched several EGR valve/cooler maintenance videos on UA-cam and yours is, by far, the best and most thorough video on the subject. Thank you for taking the time to create such an outstanding video. I just subscribed but your channel states there is no video content???????????????
@N4sir98, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Your comment is greatly appreciated!! And sorry for the inconvenience! I was able to get some feedback from youtube, it should be fixed already. Hope you can see the rest of the video content we have. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@my2daylife932 Yes, the issue was resolved. I can view all of your other video content.
I just saw this for the first time. Well done! What you call a motor is an induction coil. When electricity is pushed to that coil it causes the magnet to push the piston valve open. The only way that a coil can malfunction is for this coil to become open or cut open. It will never fail. The fault will be with the stuck valve due to carbon buildup. The mere act of cleaning it will assure that it will always function as designed.
i looked for your video regarding EGR cooler cleaning. Took mine apart last night. I filled mine up with carb cleaner and let it soak. was going to flush at car wash using sprayer. saw one guy do it that way but wonder if it is too much psi and damage the cooling coils.
Cant see doing this every 3 months. your a better man! what a pain job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@dave k ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I have used a pressure washer on my EGR before, it won't damage it, it will just make a big mess. Using a spray nozzle from a garden hose was a lot more convenient for me. You might want to give that a try next time. Thanks for sharing! 👍
My Prius V 2012 with 170k I did it like you did but had to go with the pressure washer for the egr cooler! I soak and pressure washer 3 times hang it on wire fence. It messy but speed up the process.
Oh my gosh, this video is a Godsend! I've never really worked on my own car before but I'm an uber driver and have 256K miles on a 2013 Gen 3 with about 6 more months to finish paying her off. She has run mostly smoothly but has had an old man grumbling noise sometimes upon acceleration at lower speeds especially uphill, etc. I was so tired of mechanics who don't know Priuses and honestly couldn't afford them. I'd planned to do this with a buddy who is a master mechanic but he's been too busy, so after a lot of YT vids, I got the courage to do the egr valve and intake Manifold cleaning myself. I don't think it had ever been done before. It was literally like the lungs of a 90-year old chain smoker!!! Omg 🚬😵
I've never done anything like this, so I was terrified of getting something in the engine manifold, etc and it took me like 4-5 days.
I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the EGR itself out of the car so thankyou this video is the only one out there I could find that went into that part.
But yeah my problem is that I did suspect that egr valve motor being the problem so (while it was in the car still) I'd tried to remove it and those stupid cheap aluminum screws!!! Well one is now going to be extremely difficult to get out. I found an entire unit w motor attached on ebay for $59. Do you think that's a good price???
Again, I can't thank you enough. I couldn't figure out why the initial cleaning didn't resolve the P1401 issue.
Oh man thank you for taking the time to show us how to do it. I’ve watched a bunch of vids on this and yours is the best. Only one that shows the EGR value disassembly. About to try this out for the first time on one with 125K miles. Thanks again.
Just finished up cleaning my intake manifold and egr today. I'm putting in a JDM engine in a Prius V that I picked up last week that had a blown engine. Having a spare egr cooler is a great thing to have on hand.
@V-Strom Garage. That's awesome! Its always a relief to find a good engine. I do save a lot time by having the extra cooler for every time i service the car, It cuts the time in 1/2. Thanks for watching and best of luck on your new engine swap 😁👍🔰 prius power 🔋...
Hello, I am also looking for engine swap on my Prius V with 190,000 miles , in near future, if not change the gasket after 220,000 or 230,000 as part of maintenance measure. I'll be doing it myself ( DIY ) as hobby. SO, how much did it cost you for the engine and what is JDM engine? Thank you.
@@kumara5492 I paid $1150 for mine. It's a Japanese Domestic Motor. Pulled from low mile cars in Japan.
@Kumar A, JDM Stands for Japanese Domestic Market. Basically its a engine imported from Japan ranging from 40k to 60k miles on it which is really good for us here in the states. I payed $500 for mine. Best of luck! 👍
@@my2daylife932 That's good . Can I know where did you buy JDM engine? I might go for one in near future. Thank you.
Just my two cents concerning the "bolt of death" that holds the bottom bracket on the EGR to the block. Some mechanics suggest just leaving that alone when replacing the EGR since it already has several fasteners securing it. Plus it will save time when or if the job needs done again.
Man, I wish I had watched this before I did mine which was yesterday. I only cleaned the cooler using the same solution as I was concerned with putting the EGR housing in the solution so I only cleaned the build up. Great video though.
I had a Prius V in my shop with 230k (miles), plugged EGR system (friend's car). Pathetic job of engineering by Toyota. Ridiculous labor to remove these components. Cleaned the intake manifold, tube, EGR valve with pressure washer. The cooler was completely plugged up with carbon. My 3100 psi pressure washer made no progress. Decided to soak it overnight in 2 gallons of Berryman Chem-dip. This stuff is quite toxic so be careful. It worked. pressure washer blasted a hole through the carbon but not much more. Soaked it again for about 6 hours and was able to get most of the carbon out. 10 hrs. later all is good.
@Troy Davis, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yes! the engineering of this EGR system is very complex and definitely frustrating to work on. Chem-dip is super toxic but it cleans parts so well, i wish it would clean the egr cooler fater, it takes a while before breaking down the carbon build up. thanks for stopping by our channel! 👍
Same 10 hours cleaning job! 8 cans of brake cleaner, I use a RC servo wire to clean it directly through the holes!!! Then bake fluid n done!
Anybody ever try Easy Off oven cleaner on that? Just a thought.
Wait this is hard for you guys? Jesus I must be a genius or something ig
Great 👍 thanks
best video how to remove and clean EGR valve so far
Tried the unplug EGR electrics and Prius ran smoothly and no vibration whatsoever. Since EGR cooler part is hard to get out, I only cleaned the EGR valve parts on after removing it and it’s running a little better now but engine vibration still there only minimal now. Next is grease the EGR valve motor bearing since I notice it stuck at times while pressing it to simulate up down motion.
@dougie e ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! The EGR is a pain to remove but it is recommended to remove it completely to service it correctly so the performance is greater. Thanks for watching! 👍
apparently problem came back when driving on motorway and toyota dealer found water pump pressure low so going to replace it next. have now changed sparks, coils and egr system, next is water pump and engine thermostat recommended by senior mechanic. this apart from using new toyota genuine parts over 4k worth of repairs. so far only 1.5k spent and rising! this problem can be guess work but I heard using a pressure test, block tester to check coolant fluid in engine oil and borescope to find leaking coolant in cylinders is something alot of mechanics shy from. only caring mechanics who want to serve their customers will go the extra mile to check leaking coolant that potentially caused the shudder misfired and acceletate/decelerate vibrations.
@@my2daylife932 I did remove the egr fully but apparently the water pump being faulty was adding the engine misfires causing vibrations and shudders. even engine thermostat was diagnosed as possibly contributing to the electric sensors functioning properly overall
dont over grease the egr valve rod cause it will make it function erratically and it vibrates like crazy nonstop now actually
Is there a secret to how much of a turn you give th magnet when you are installing it on the stem? How hard do you tighten it? THank YOU!
@William Cote, Welcome back to MY2DAYLIFE! No secret, I just get the magnet all the way down on the stem and try to hold it as best as i can with one finger while i put the step motor back on it. I really don't tighten it. Best of luck! 👍
hi there how u doin i ve seen ur videos its very usefull thanks for bringing up ....i have 2012 prius i personally love to mantain my car by myself.last week i've done my egr service including throattle body and mainifold .once i install back and gave spin to my car there was an error CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM STOP THE CAR ON SAFE SIDE ....then i plugged out the main battery for 15 min thankfully error code had gone and still not getting any ...but onething i observed my car gone slower than before and also fuel consumption comes down.my car is driven 60km since i done this service i drove in power mode for some.distance to check the accleration ..seems to be okey on power but feel its bit sluggish on eco mode on normal daily drive .now do u think it takes time to car adjust itself because as we plugged out the system to get rid of the error or is there any reason behind plz let me know so that i will not abuse.myself lol thanx takecare bye
@Jamshed Tassadiq, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Toyota recommends to get a software update after any work has been done to the EGR. I did notice a slight change in my prius mpg but my car is running great (no issues yet). They usually charge $100 for the software update but if you know anyone who has a techstream software program that could do the update for you that would work as well. Best of luck! 👍
Use a power washer to blast the cooler out! It worked for me.
@shekinah33 Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Great video why didn’t you clean the intake manifold. Intake manifold has small holes near where the gasket They get plugged up cause issues as well
@Semir M Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I clean the intake manifold every other oil change and it was done right before the video. Thank you for watching! 👍
Great video!!! I have a 2010 that it turned back on from idle, it would rattle. Same thing it I just turned it on in the morning. Took it to the mechanic. First I was told that it was coil numberthen 1, problem continued. Then a spark plug on the same cylinder. And now they're telling me it's the egr cooler (not the valve/motor but the cooler itself. Not sure if that makes sense. Just ordered one and I might do the job myself. I might just clean the valve and pipe as you showed it on your helpful video. Thank you!!!
Your video was awesome. What's the best way to differentiate between a blown HG and EGR valve (or other ignition or fuel supply) issues? I currrently have an engine shudder that shows up at low throttle or sometimes at idle. I did the EGR service 30k miles ago and install a catch can. It ran fine for multiple month, however now I have a shudder at low throttle. It was bad enough that I stopped driving the vehicle for several month and during this time, I lost coolant. When I drove it again, not aware that I was low on coolant, it threw the WP code P261B, but after adding coolant I haven't gotten the WP code again, but I still have the engine shudder issue sometimes at idle when the engine is warm or at low throttle when accelerating. However, it drives fine a full throttle (highway, etc.). Any thoughts? Could I have a blown HG even though it drive fine at highway speed or full throttle?
1) Can a faulty EGR system cause bubbles in the expansion reservoir ?
2)can we bypass this system ? How ? What are the consequences?
How to know if it is leaking coolant to the the exhaust and passing bubbles ?
@Fa Dy - Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! From my personal experience my 3rd gen Prius was doing the same thing in the coolent reservoir, just bubbling like crazy. I would wait for the car to cool down to open the cap and lots of air would come out. I got a leak down test done at a mechanic shop to tell me that coolent was leaking into my cylinders and this was caused by a bad head gasket. As far as bypassing the system not to sure on that🤔 (I have never done it) You can try to look at the pistons with a borscope after the car is cold. Remove your spark plugs and check to see if you have coolent coming in. Best of luck! 🤞
@@my2daylife932 Thank you for the video! Very helpful! Did you end up changing your head gasket afterall? Did that end up being the problem??? Thanks again.
I have a 2013 with 193,000 miles dose not use oil, I use Cast 0-20 EDGE for older engines I change oil and filter at 5,000 miles have you tried non Ethanol Gas? So far so good I am amazed, I served my apprenticeship in 1965 working on foreign cars I was the only American in the shop the rest were Italian the best wrenches in the world as it was rare that the final test drive found ZERO what a great time when we rebuilt fuel pumps, generators, adjusted relay generator box to find the sweet spot around 14-15 volts with a full load?
You bring back the olden days when we rebuilt any engines from Ferrari, Maserati Alfa, Lancia, Fiat, Austin Healy, 3,000, Jaguar , Sunbeam and tractors? Life was so good back then nothing like the criminal Element that serves in Washington???
regarding your question about only the motor for the egr valve on sale. not find anything but Amazon already had it the egr valve at half price than any other oem provider
@Felix Rivas Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Awesome!! Thanks for sharing!👍
On 40:25 when you screw on the spring brown cylinder and bearing did you tighten the brown roll tight or leave it screwed on light?
I just finished cleaning and reassembling the EGR, and after starting the ICE, white smoke with a chemical odor is coming from behind the engine. I did spill the coolant that was in the EGR into the engine bay, so I thought it might just be evaporating, but it's not coming from where it seemed to spill. I turned the car off as soon as I noticed, but despite running for only a minute or so the exhaust manifold was already extremely hot.
Not sure how normal that is. I was leaning on the engine pretty heavily while getting some of the trickier nuts; I wouldn't think that would damage anything but the thought did occur to me. Any advice would be appreciated.
@Ahmad Masadeh ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! The white smoke is normal when dropping coolant in an engine bay. The engine being hot even after a few seconds of being on is normal as well. You might want to let the car run for a little longer until all the coolant evaporates/burns out and it will have a funky smell untill its all done. Best of luck! 👍
Great video! Did you replace that little black motor or put existing one back on.? I assume you tested to see if it worked first?
@Byron Brown▪︎Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I tried putting the existing one back on but it still didn't work so i had to replace it. Thanks for watching! 👍
Thanks a ton for video! How to you clean the cooler? Was trying to see the video but coudn't. It looks super clean!
I have the 0401 code on my 2010 prius. I took it completely apart and cleaned everything including the intake manifold thoroughly. I also replaced the pvc valve and the knock sensor because the engine was pinging. Put everything back together and the car runs fine and the pinging is gone and the gas mileage is better but the p0401 code came back. Do you think it’s the black egr motor. Is there any way to test the motor with a multimeter to see if it’s good?
@Robert Gerber • Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! With these particular generation prius (2010 and on). Toyota made a system that stores engine codes on the computer making them permanent codes, even is the problem is fixed the computer will still think there is something wrong so you technically have to go to the dealership to get the code removed or if you know of someone who has Toyota tech stream that could remove the code for you. And about testing the component, I would have to look more into that before i can give you an anwer. Best of luck! 👍
@@my2daylife932 thank you
I've cleaned the cooler did the intake manifold cleaned it new gasket . All this work and car runs worse now .knocking. no power .I'll check the EGR valve tomorrow ..and I'll clean the injectors as well I think I'll remove the cooler again and cleaned it better .I'll leave over night soaking in gasoline .it was so clogged up brake cleaner will not Penetrate through it .I blew it with air gun still was hard for air to go through .I hate it car runs like crap .maybe egr valve is staying open I disconnected the plug it but made no difference
Your videos are the best, my shade tree mechanic brother!
It took me 4 hours to get the EGR valve and heat exchanger out of my 2010. I think it needs a head gasket too. Is that a LOT more work? Now that I've got the wipers and cowl out, I'm thinking of going for it.
@Ivytown. Thank you, i appreciate your nice gesture! Before you start make sure you have all the supplies needed to perform the work. It will make your life easier. Doing the head gasket is a big job but the feeling of accomplishment after you do it yourself is priceless. If you have the time, i say go for it. YOU GOT THIS! The first time i serviced the egr it took me all day 🤣 but over time it gets easier. Best of luck on your project 👍 Thanks for watching..
Gasket Masters has made a fortune off of GEN 3. The 2010-2012 have weak head gaskets that were remedied in 2013. But they never fixed the poor design of the electric water pump impeller that has a plastic ring around it. This ring cracks after many heat cycles and jams the impeller. All Gen 3's need a catch can and a temp gauge. By the time the CEL comes on for the dead coolant pump, it's too late and you won't know what's happening. I keep my scanner plugged in on long trips to read any code and the coolant temp. You can put a program on your phone called Dr. Prius. It and a $25.00 bluetooth scanner off Amazon allows you to read codes and unlike, Torque Pro, it measures Internal Resistance of the main battery modules and that's a much better indication of bad modules than any load or voltage test. The Pros use Dr. Prius.
@@amazoidal im planning to get this thing done to my 2015 persona series. Also planning to replace the water pump and the inverter pump. The inverter pump is underneath the Inverter and it looks like a pain in the ass to replace.
@@amazoidal how does the temp gauge work please?
No temp gauge on the Prius. But almost all the scanners will read the coolant temp. Just buy a $20 bluetooth scanner and read the coolant temp on your phone.
Dude very self explanatory I really dig it thank you man
@Wilbert Coria ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I appreciate that!! Thank you for watching! 👍
Hello, nice video! I was wondering if you knew the size of the easily strip-able egr valve screws? Mine are pretty much gone and I think I have just enough thred to take them off once.
@Matt Appelbaum, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! No problem man! Yes I do, they are steel machine round head screws 10-32 × 3/4. You can pick them up at ACE Hardware. The item # is 6824. Lot # H09551941. Best of luck! 👍
Where are you located? I have a Prius with this problem.
cleaning the egr every 3 months sounds a lil excessive, how many miles do you put on your car every 3 months?
@Dj Sappysapp inTheMix, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yeah, it does sound a little excessive but i do drive the car anywhere from 150 to 200 miles every day so i do this to prevent any issues. Thanks for watching! 👍
Wow that’s a lot of miles! I’m at about 100 miles a day using my Prius V for deliveries ✊ these cars are definitely work horse’s and easy to work on. Kudo’s for keeping up with maintenance. Are you planning on putting an oil catch can in?
@Dj Sappysapp inTheMix, Thanks man! I've been looking for a oil catch can, any recommendations...?
@@my2daylife932 I have been thinking about that oil catch can as well... there is a lot of info in the priuschat forum about that. You are pretty handy and I believe you will DIY this thing :) Thank you for the video! step by step - just awesome!
@Kim Long, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I appreciate the info. I'm looking forward on installing an oil catch can on my 3rd gen soon. Thanks for watching! 👍
Great video! What about the pipes after the cooler/EGR valve? Do you also need to clean that and the pipes that follow all the way to the exhaust pipe?
Excellent questions David. Did you ever get your answer? Did you use the "chem-dip"?
@David Beaty ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! First of all, I want to apologize for not seeing/responding your message earlier. My recommendation would be to clean as much as you can if you can. It's pretty hard to get the whole pipe cleaned 100% but what I used was a pipe cleaner similar to a baby bottle brush cleaner as well as an air nozzle. Thanks for watching! 👍
@Daniel Beaty ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! When I saw your comment I noticed I had an unanswered comment so Thank you for that. I did use chem-dip just be very careful when you do so since it's very harmful. Thanks for watching! 👍
Nice video. I am about to clean EGR for my Prius V with 190,000 miles for the first time. Is it necessary to disconnect Hybrid Battery System ( Orange Plug to High Voltage battery. I don't want to disconnect and end up with some codes. I'll disconnect 12v battery since it's simple. I am thinking of soaking it in a small bucket of gas overnight and pressure wash it next day . Is that good idea. Also. once I clean manifold , can I reuse the same gasket or do I have to put a new gasket ( if it is not expensive). I subscribed Thank you
@kumar A, Thanks for the subscription i appreciated it! Every time I service the car i always disconnect both batteries just to make sure i don't get any
trouble codes and prevent electric shock, safety first but i completely understand your concern about unwanted codes. I personally haven't used gasoline on this, please share your experiences with that. The gasket should be replaced but you could get away with using the same one just keep a eye on it. Best of luck! 👍
Will there be any issues with the engine if you disconnected the wire to the EGR valve and ran it that way besides a check engine light? I live in an area that does not do emission test so I'm not too worried about a check engine light.
@Frank C Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! In my personal opinion disconnecting it or not doesn't eliminate all the carbon build up inside the EGR cooler, this is something that always has to get serviced in order to prevent any other problems. Best of luck! 👍
Just unplugging it will do nothing and they do not want you to know that you can delete the EGR.
Do you clean the manifold on a regular basis as well?
@Gerardo Rios Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yes! everytime I service the EGR I also clean the manifold as well. Thanks for watching!👍
Would installing an oil catcher before the egr keep it clean(er) over time?
faulty egr valve can cause the problem with hybrid ssystem? because i clean egr valve some days ago and now check engine light is coming on and stucking when car going battry to engine and showing check hybrid system
@Sagar Mahmood, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yes, a faulty EGR Valve can cause a problem and give you a p0401 code, as far as a check hybrid system you would definitely need to scan for codes at this point to pin point the problem, sometimes it could be the inverter going bad or the hybrid battery. It might be as simple as checking your cooling fan thats in the back seat behind the passenger side, if it's dirty clean the fan out this can cause a problem with the hybrid battery. One more thing you can try is to reset the system by disconnecting the orange safety plug and the 12v battery for 10 minutes then plug everything back up, this has worked for me in the past. Best of luck!👍
the track of the magnet is supposed to be greased with high temp grease. Make sure the magnet is screwed all way in or the egr is opened when the car starts and misfire like crazy. The EGR is also different on the revised version with different part number. The EGR is also reprogrammed at around 2013. Make sure we have the newest firmware.
I been using lucas fuel treatment every fill up....no problems yet at 105,000 miles. I also accelerate very hard sometimes . 0 to 60 in 10 seconds. 2013 model prius.
There is an extended service warranty for the sticky egr valve that expires early 2022 or 150k miles
@Heather Magee, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Unfortunately, I don't qualify for the extended warranty because the car is about to hit 300k miles. Thanks for the helpful information! 👍
I cannot find any info on this recall? Can you help me find it?
Hi good job .I have a problem with my 2010 code p0303 replace spark plugs .but today I'm doing this and the intake manifold as well I read and watched several videos. And about this issue with intake ports clogging up and my car is running rough jerkin. I have 184.000 on this engine .And code p0303 comes on .thanks for your video
My Prius is giving me a grinding noise when I start it and after awhile it goes away I think it’s the egr as well did u encounter that issue
@Andy Henry, WELCOME TO MY2DAYLIFE! I did have a similar problem. I serviced the egr and cleaned out the intake manifold because of all the oil it throws underneath the throttle body. I also made sure my spark plugs we're in good condition. After a little maintenance my problem was gone. Not 100% sure what was causing it but i went ahead and cleaned everything just to make sure. Best of luck! 👍
Hi did you figure out what rattle noise was mine does that at start up but goes away was it your egr valve?
I completely took mine apart and it was horrifyingly clogged in every pipe along the egr system even the small holes on the manifold leading into the ports were blocked, hardest to clean was the cooler where i soaked it in degreaser for two days and used welding wire to punch through the channels.
@GTA V Decoders, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! It's definitely time consuming. The first time i did it was so surprising on how much carbon builds up on the EGR itself. It gets easier the more you do it, I try to service it every 3 months just to stay on top of things. Thanks for watching! 👍
That's what I am planning to do. Soak them for one day. Can I use gasoline instead of degreaser ? Any thoughts ? Thank you.
@@kumara5492 i would say use degreaser its more aggressive, if yours is fully blocked in the cooler its better to leave it for few days.
@@cetGT3 Is it necessary to disconnect Hybrid Battery System ( Orange Plug to High Voltage battery. I don't want to disconnect and end up with some codes. I'll disconnect 12v battery since it's simple. I am thinking of soaking it in degreaser overnight and pressure wash it next day . Is that good idea. Also. once I clean manifold , can I reuse the same gasket or do I have to put a new gasket ( if it is not expensive).Thank you
Kumar A yes disconnect that in the trunk and also the 12v battery as well
Hello. After how many miles it should be cleaned?
@Ucha Tevdorashvili Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I personally service the EGR at about 10k miles, sometimes sooner. Long ago a Toyota dealership said that the EGR needed to be serviced at 65k miles. I feel more comfortable doing it at 10k miles. Just because this generation Prius burns so much oil. Thanks for watching!👍
@@my2daylife932 Understand. Thank you for answer and good video instructions.
@Ucha Tevdorashvili Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! No problem! 👍
Do you clean out the intake manifold every 3 months or the egr pipe alone?
@Ruben M, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yes, i do both every 3 months. Thanks for watching! 👍
He does that every time this video plays
How many miles you put on your car every 3 months? I am thinking of cleaning mine for the first time now ( with 190,000 miles) and do it every year ( 10,000 mile interval ) . Will soaking EGR in gasoline for couple of days clean it from inside thoroughly ( followed by hard brushing ) ? Thank you.
@Kumar A, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I drive about 150 to 200 miles a day that's way i do the heavy cleaning so often. Thanks for watching and Best of luck! 👍
Question...Can you give voltage to the EGR motor and see it operate?
There is TSB ( technical service bulletin) for that EGR DTC P0401
I tell you what you did 100 time better then Toyota dealers dealers are changing some parts never wash or clean intake manifold or hoses if they’re clogged and after couple days light is coming back with same code.
@hyeeagle • Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! THANK YOU! 👍
Im figuring now, gen 3s are only good up to 100k and thats it. Sooo many expensive repairs its bewildering.
@skorpyo33 ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I totally agree with how expensive it can get sometimes. Thanks for watching! 👍
But not impossible

@murad dahleh, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! It sounds like a misfire to me. Get your car scaned to see what trouble codes you get, that will help you pin point the problem. Best of luck! 👍
with this and the PCV value done, do your prius consume any oil?
@Collin Shum Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Not as much but it still does. You can also install a catch can to help with oil consumption. Best of luck! 👍
How much would you charge for this service?
Nice vid bro! Thanks again for always sharing your experience with us.
@Jay Chu. 👍
@@my2daylife932 Btw bro, how much do you think we can get from parting out a 2005 Prius? Mine has 370,000km. But a recent frontal collision had her hood panel and front bumper damaged. No damage to the radiator and headlights, no check engine light showed up.
@Jay Chu. Sorry to hear that, hope everyone is ok! 🙏 Check out eBay and compare prices on used prius parts. Just on the doors alone your looking at $100 each and like 45 bucks for the rear bumper. You do have a lot to break down in prices on your prius. You could definitely squeeze a big chunk of money out of it. People always need parts. Best of luck!👍
@@my2daylife932 Thanks bro. Me and my wife are okay. The collision happened at around 10-15mph, but the damage got exaggerated because I didn't align the front bumper back properly the last time I removed it.... What if I sell the car all in one piece, as-is? How much do you think I can get? I dont have a big garage or drive way to remove and store the parts. She has many parts that are less than 1 year old (hybrid battery, 12v battery, cat, tailpipe, front coil and struts, front wheel bearings, cv shaft, brake and rotors)!!.
@Jay Chu. Thats good to hear Jay. You could probably get around $1,500-2,500. (I could be wrong). I hope you can get what you feel is best.👍

Have you done this on the Prius C [Aqua] as well?
@Hedgehog The Sonic, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I haven't had a chance to work on one yet. We have been looking into adding one to our fleet of cars, maybe in the future we will have one on the channel. Thanks for watching! 👍
Never mind...Had I let the video literally run 10 more seconds , I would have had my answer...LOL...
@John Vandenberghe Welcome to my2daylife! 👍
What solution did you soak the parts in and did it clean it well?
@John Vandenberghe Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! It's called Chem-dip, you could get it at O'Reilly's. If the carbon build up is not to bad it will do the job just fine. Thanks for watching! 👍
Any problems after replacement? they say you need a tps software update after replacing this
@Cesar Mende, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I personally haven't had a problem after replacement. I did do a software update at the dealership a couple years ago. What i do is disconnect all power on vehicle to service EGR to prevent any other problems with system, so far its worked every time. What you could do is replace/clean EGR then go to the dealership to get a software update after servicing part. Thanks for watching! 👍
@@my2daylife932 How much did they charge for software update?
@Cesar Mende, I paid like around $100 dollars 3 years ago so not sure how much they will charge now. Best of luck! 👍
Nice, so you’re able to pull the egr and cooler out as one piece.
@joy d ▪︎ Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! You could definitely take it off in one piece. Thanks for watching! 👍
I wonder how this issue causes a head gasket failure?
@Frank C • Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! When the EGR cooler is neglected from service for a long period of time all the carbon build up blocks all the gasses from escaping and goes right back into the engine, this buils back pressure and damages the head gasket. Best of luck!👍
@@my2daylife932 I think you got it backwards. Exhaust gases are supposed to go into the intake. If it gets clogged up and gets no exhaust gases then there is no pressure. I don't think that's it. I was reading somewhere that the heat cycles from the engine turning on and off are what causes the head gasket failure.
@Frank C • Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Thanks for the info. 👍
Can this EGR carbon clogged build up cause the car to sound like a terrible knocking noise from other videos sounds like it can?
@Chad Ditsworth, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! Yes it could, in my case i had knocking noise because i had a bad head gasket but definitely service your EGR, this can prevent lots of problems. I do it every 3 months or every other oil change. Best of luck! 👍
Hi Chad, I recently cleaned out my whole EGR system and intake manifold because I was getting the knocking noise. I had an overheating issue so I also put a new coolant pump and thermostat. I added a new PCV valve also. All of this helped for a while but it started to happen again after a hundred miles or so because of the head gasket issue. I have coolant loss with no external leaks, also the check engine light with P0301-P0304 codes coming up randomly/occasionally so it is the head gasket that needs to be replaced. It actually drives fine other than the knocking noise on startup but I'm limiting it's use until I get a HG job done. btw it is a 2010 and has 268k miles.
@@Ass_Burgers_Syndrome my 2010 does the same but now it won’t move at all. It throw the egr code and and water pump which I just fixed. Then it got hot and now it won’t move.. I’m gonna clean the egr today and hope to god that is the problem but I did get a gasket replacement kit just in case
@frances Guajardo, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! It sounds like a problem i had with my 2010 Toyota prius. The first thing i did was disconnect my hybrid battery and my 12v battery then i started the cleaning process on my EGR, after i was done cleaning i put everything back together, i waited 1 hour then i connected the 12v and hybrid battery. I was good after that. BEST OF LUCK! 👍

The parts that you dipped in the spirit bucket, what direction does the smaller metal gasket go? It has a bump out on one side. I was almost able to see when you were taking it apart. I was hoping you would show when you put it back together. At 41:58 everything was laid out and I was thrilled you were gonna show exactly what I have been trying to figure out. I wonder if anyone has tried moving the PCR valve up to the top of the engine? On the Prius C, it is in the top right corner of the valve cover, and must pick up far less oil-mist than the setup in earlier cars..
@Richard King Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I wonder if the valve cover from the prius c would just bolt on for an easy swap on the 3rd generation prius 🤔 I will definitely be looking into this 🧐 Thanks for watching! 👍
@@my2daylife932 Hello. I cleared everything related to the EGR and now I have a 401 error, I ordered a Prius C valve to rearrange the control cover. Did you know it fits the regular Prius?
Hi there. I really need help if anyone else encountered the same issue. I performed all steps according to the video but once I put everything back together my dashboard has the orange triangle and says “Check Hybrid System.” Did this happen to anyone else?
@Suzie Duran, Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! I'm sorry to hear about your problem! What you can try is resetting your cars cumputer by disconnecting the 12v battery and the hybrid battery (orange plug) for 10 minutes. Then plug everything back up and push your power button twice without stepping on your break pedal, after you see the accessories lights turn on then push the power button once more so at this point you shouldn't have any dash lights on, wait 30 seconds... after that press your break pedal push your start button and your car should go into ready mode. Best of luck! 👍
Hi! Thanks for the reply! It was able to turn on after I went inside to go eat and 30 minutes later it turned on nicely.
I also have a question. I wasn’t able to get to the coolant because the bolt in the back didn’t turn! At all! Is it welded to the EGR? Do I have to turn it with a ratchet to get the coolant out?
Goddammit does sea foam work?

@@my2daylife932 Thanks for the vidoe, Make sure the EGR magnet is all the way in before we close it. It is unscrew by itself from the spring force, it may cause the valve open and caused misfire from the additional air from exhaust

Lexus 2011 p0420 code can you plz guide me for remove this code
Lexus 200
@Love is Nothing without Emotio.. The best thing to do at this point is pay close attention to the way your car is performing when you're driving. For example are you losing engine power when accelerating up hills..? Are you having black smoke coming out of your muffler...? If so you might need to replace your catalytic converter. If you don't have any of these issues then you need to check your oxygen sensors that can also cause the p0420 code, other things to check for is the air filter, spark plugs, injectors and air leaks. Any of these things will cause the car to give a p0420 code. Best of luck! 👍

The metal part does get stuck, so won't open or close anymore, and would need replacement. Poor design on the prius
@bluesteele Welcome to MY2DAYLIFE! This part is very expensive so I try to service it frequently to get it to last as long as possible before replacement. Thanks for watching! 👍
Stick with the GEN 2. No EGR, no electric water pump that fails and blows head gaskets (especially weak gaskets in 2010-2012), no oil catch can needed (PCV valve in wrong place). The GEN 2's are the Prii that go 400k. Gen 3 and 4, are you a masochist? Toyota blew it on GEN 3.
@Stanny1. Yes, i agree with you on the Toyota design on the 3rd generation, they could of done a better job engineering this prius. I have a 2nd generation prius as well. I did hit 458k on it before I had to replace the engine. I like sharing my experiences on both generation prius. It has definitely been a cool experience dealing with all the different types of problems that happen with these cars. I'm learning so much and trying to help other people with the same or similar issues. Thanks for watching!
had a few of each.. yep gen3 has more issues to get past but its a way better car to drive than gen2
Until the head gasket blows. Change that water pump every 75k. And get rid of the WS and use REDLINE D6. WS is not synthetic.
@@amazoidalgen2 will eventually blow a head gasket too they aren't immune, I had two with blown hg, with gen3 just clean the egr and put a catch can on it! And look after it properly. Would run redline atf in a gen2 tranny because the motors aren't submerged in fluid, motors in gen3 are drown in fluid so I stick with WS in those personally
