    This EGR removal process was performed on a 2013 Toyota Prius V but the concepts apply to nearly all cars. Sluggish acceleration? Lack of Power in your car or truck? Acceleration can feel sluggish, and you may notice a lack of power when driving uphill. You might experience a rough idle, hesitation, or stalling. This video shows the importance of EGR cleaning and a real life removal on a third generation prius.

    A faulty EGR valve and/or a dirty intake manifold are two of the most common causes of P0401. In essence, When your Toyota gives you a P0401 code, the technical issue is insufficient EGR flow. Like most engine trouble codes, the root cause may or may not be obvious. If your engine computer reports a P0401 code, you'll likely notice a pinging or knocking when the vehicle is at higher speeds or the engine is under load, a power loss, sluggishness, etc. As the gang and nutzaboutbolts knows all too well, a Code P0401 Means that your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve has failed or intermittent. An EGR recirculates small amounts of exhaust back into the combustion chambers of the engine in order to decrease the combustion temperature. This reduces the formation of pollution.

    A relative gifted me their 3rd-gen Prius as it had a blown head gasket. I started disassembling the engine to remove the head a few weeks ago and got to the EGR studs and almost broke the long one (the external torx part started to twist). My daily driver sprung a head gasket leak and is a bit more of a project, so I came back to the Prius to see how I could do with continuing the job. That stud came right out. My neighbor finds humor in my shenanigans and came over to give me company and brought a couple tools I was missing. That “disposable member” nut was a challenge. I am thinking the vandal may be onto something with cutting it off and filing the remaining bracket smooth. I joined Priuschat and will look for the heated argument. LOL. I subscribed and appreciate your great documentation of these jobs. Also, thanks Margie for the camera work and PDF drafts!

    I performed this job today on my 2015 toyota auris hybrid which has the same set up as the Toyota Prius. I soaked my egr cooler overnight in degreaser followed by a thorough jet wash the following morning and then Hooray I could see daylight through my egr cooler. I took Merv’s advice and cut the dreaded bottom bracket as it is easier to take off next time and it is easier to put back on. Take your time when performing this job and make sure you clean everything properly especially the small holes in the manifold. Carb cleaner / egr cleaner is not sufficient enough to clean this and I advise something stronger. Some say don’t use oven cleaner but I used mr muscle and it stripped the carbon away. Some parts of carbon I stripped with a metal wire hanger. Please be thorough when doing this and take your time and do not forget to change your pcv valve when performing this task.
    Now my car drives with a lot more power 😊

    9:46. Instead of torque stud, I used 6-mm socket. Feels a bit loose, but it worked, Did not strip it. Again, you can trow away the cursed torque stud, and replace it with long M8 bolt and a nut that is screwed all the way to the head of the bolt before installation. :-))) Again, I love your coloring!

Also, when removing the phillips screws, do yourself a favor. send these screws to make company to the stud from heII. replace them with hex-head bolts or allen wrench bolts, 5 mm. Such bolts are used often on bicycles.

    A word to the wise...after fighting with the "expendable crew member" for a day and a half, I came up with a brainstorm that maybe my tool was too big (no pun intended) because of this hose that's right next to it that prevented me from getting a 12mm deep well and 3/8 drive ratchet in there. So I ran to Napa and got me a 12mm 1/4" drive deep well socket along with a 3" and 6" extension just in case and with the help of my long handled 1/4" drive ratchet, I had it out in a matter of minutes

    I cleaned my egr heat exchanger with boiling water and leaf blower. It helped, but it took 5 hot water baths. I would suggest a laboratory bunsen gas burner. The flame is very hot and pointed inside. This is all stainless steel and you can heat it safely to red-hot, i.e. 600 C deg. All garbage burns before this point.

    what do you think about just removing the EGR valve and cleaning that, disconnecting the Exhaust pipe from the back of the EGR cooler, keeping the coolant lines attached, and just blowing it out real good with compressed air? The Car Care Nut suggests this method, wondering what you think about it.
    How necessary is it to make it spotless like that? I don't really have a problem on my end, just doing it as preventative measure while changing spark plugs

      Well, I'm tempted to say it's the lazy way out, but sometimes lazy is better. HOWEVER, seems to me it depends on how clogged up the thru-channels are. It's hard to tell by shining a flashlight through because it's not really a straight shot, and if she's still attached to the exhaust manifold I think it would be hard to see in there.

    • @joskd8491
      @joskd8491 7 місяців тому +1

      if it's really clogged you can't just blow the debrie out. I took my EGR-cooler off and had to use ovencleaner (natriumhydroxide) to solve the problem. Took me a while but it's like new now. I mean, the job is difficult for an amateur like me and I just thougth: If I do it, I do it properly and now the cooler is cleaner than new. Also intakemanifold is cleaned a the car runs a lot better and smoother. Just invested time and no money! Take good care of your car and it can last a very long time, so that saves a lot of money. By the way: sawing off that difficult mounting point underneeth is something that I'll do next time

If you very much insist, there are special bolts with long thick necks, that have about 10 mm of thread on the front. They can be used instead, and the head is outside, easyly accessile with a wrench. Or, take a long enough M8 bolt. put two nuts at the end, leaving as long as you want thread , tighten them against each other. Again, the head is now on the open, accessible to most wrenches.

Watch this video to see how I dissect it --> ua-cam.com/video/QGcZYGA2cnM/v-deo.htmlsi=DK9d2PCoaOBI0O5h Might also be something as simple as a sensor gone bad.
