    EGR valve and EGR cooler making your car sluggish? Watch EGR CLEANING MADE EASY and see how I made a Gen 3 Toyota Prius run like a top!
    "Can it be this easy", you ask? Well, I'm hear to tell you, this cured my error code P0401. This video helps with Exhaust Gas Recirculation codes (referred to as Code P0400, P0401) --- low flow codes that relate to how (EGR) system works. In this video series, you will see my EGR valve location, removal, inspection, test and cleaning. A faulty or clogged EGR valve is not good and you'll know if it's happening based on poor performance.

    *Remember, this Toyota is a Gen III Prius or 3rd Generation Prius. But the basic principals and functions of EGR systems apply to most cars. This video may be helpful if you are looking for answers to the following:

    A faulty EGR valve and/or a dirty intake manifold are two of the most common causes of P0401. In essence, When your Toyota gives you a P0401 code, the technical issue is insufficient EGR flow. Like most engine trouble codes, the root cause may or may not be obvious. If your engine computer reports a P0401 code, you'll likely notice a pinging or knocking when the vehicle is at higher speeds or the engine is under load, a power loss, sluggishness, etc. As the gang and nutzaboutbolts knows all too well, a Code P0401 Means that your Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve has failed or intermittent. An EGR recirculates small amounts of exhaust back into the combustion chambers of the engine in order to decrease the combustion temperature. This reduces the formation of pollution.

    I could not believe my eyes when I saw this clip this morning about something inherently boring like “cleaning an EGR value” of a car and all of the sudden find myself in a movie theater watching an old and classical Hollywood western movie with a voice of John Wayne, with a lots of excellent humor, with a neigh of a horse, and with modern and high quality video editing techniques produced not by a Silicon Valley young computer nerd but by a retired man god knows from what part of Midwest of USA.
    I truly enjoyed it. A list of cleaning materials, a technical discussion on how the cooler and the EGR value are related and what is inside each one of them, the kind of brushes to use for cleaning purposes and the way to disassemble and reassemble the parts were very useful.
    Merv, your sense of thoroughness is highly appreciated and as far as I am concerned is highly admired as well. Thank you, Merv!

    4:00 the black cap is the stator and the round magnet is the rotor of electrical motor. they drive the jack-screw back-front, just like the jack screw of an airplane controls the horizontal stabilizer at the tail.

    Thank you for this video. I also got rid of the useless member - took a saw and just got it off instead of trying to reach for the nut. THANK YOU for the lovely idea in that other video (whatever that was)! Next - trying to level a head on sandpaper, instead of paying machine shop. The fun awaits!

      @@jayviz Turned out to be great! Took me a while with distractions, work, kids etc so a bit over a month. Followed a few videos that made it much easier. The thing about sanding the head surface - is to glue sand paper to a long piece of glass or straight table well enough. Then it is just repetitive motion for a while. The trick is to shave visible dark spots off - dont even need tools. Some vids get crazy about having it to be super straight - bs. Once it is all fresh metal, it is done (mine took about 3hrs). Another thing i discovered - old bolts break often. So had to extract a broken bolt out of a cylinder block. Hardest part is to make a center for drill. In any case - all turned out good. Car runs smooth now after everything got cleaned! I'm going to sell it, but the way engine sounds now, it might just go another 200k easily.

    if you look at the top end of the heat exchanger, the flange is bent toward the nuts. this makes it impossible to install a wrench and turn it. I cut off some of the square material, to make some 45 degree. This allowed me, this night, to disconnect the EGR from the stainless steel heat exchanger. I would advise all of you, to take off even more of the material. I used a box-wrench to turn the nuts.

    How should one clean the surfaces that reuse metal gaskets, if at all? Fine sandpaper?
    Merv's parts look good as new. I've cleaned the insides of darn near everything (so many rinse cycles), but my outsides still show their age (~165kmi) and I need to finally reassemble tonight. Thanks for the quality help, Merv & friends!

    the black sooth there is rather strong carcinogenic material. contains PAH. polyaromatic hydrocarbons. pyrene, benzpyrene, antracene, tetracene, etc nasty stuff. make sure you clean up the mess, your hands, clothing and do not breath the dust. Thanks for the oven cleaner idea. I will soak my heat exchanger right now.

      Sorry I am just now finding your message. Yes, I agree. That is RIDICULOUS for a digital puchase. It should be instantly available! To be honest, I have been VERY unhappy with Spring, but being that we are a small channel I just haven't had time to create a new online store. Let me know if you finally resolved this. If not, let me know in this comments section and I will see what I can do. For the record ... and quote me on this .. SPRING SUCKS.

    Would you happen to know what type of material the EGR Cooler is made of? Also, when you soaked the interior of the EGR Cooler with Easy-Off Cleaner Degreaser how long did you soak the interior of the EGR Cooler and how many times did you soak it?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  2 місяці тому

      It's been a while since I did that job, so forgive my faulty memory, but I'm pretty sure it's made of stainless steel. At the time I did research because I wanted to make sure oven cleaner would be safe on such a material, so Easy Off seemed to be the answer. I think I soaked it three times overnight if memory serves. But if you are worried about the strength of the oven cleaner, there are probably other alternatives, or maybe you can soak it for a shorter period of time. I know some people have been known to use boiling hot water mixed with Dawn dish detergent, but I didn't want to mess around with boiling liquid. The trick is to cork it real good so it can soak for a while, then my pressure washer was the icing on the cake! Hope this helps. -Merv Himself

      @@MervsServiceSecrets Thank you very much for answering my questions. Did you use the pressure washer before or after you used the oven cleaner? After you cleaned the EGR Cooler with the oven cleaner have you reinstalled the EGR Cooler on your Prius? If so, have you experienced any problems with the cooler; for example, leaks?

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  7 місяців тому +2

      Very true. I used the easy off on the cooler because it says it's safe for stainless steel. I can't claim to be a genius -- this is just my personal approach and I liked the results. I can understand why a feller might want to soak it for a shorter duration of course. But rinsing it well is a big consideration too.
