The defense strategy was a very risky one. It's rarely used, and consists of the hope of a giant asteroid striking the courtroom without any warning, thus making the trial impossible to continue.
In a weird way, Andrew Smith's casual, blunt, unorthodox persona actually makes him a more credible witness. Nobody could accuse him of being coached or reciting fake lines.
Very true. Although I did find him to be a bit full of himself but at the same time I respect his bluntness and not trying or caring about coming across as "likeable" and instead just being himself on the stand.
I bet he don't make it 10 years, mark my words, we will hear about a bedsheet necktie, or an overdose of stashed meds, or something similar, he knows he's not leaving that place ever, unless he's in a body bag.
I couldn’t believe it when he stated that he had suffered a head injury!! I knew Chandler was jealous of his brothers Diabetes diagnosis and that was one of the reasons he “fell” down the stairs. Chandler needed something to “ prevent “ him from going to Florida for his “job” at SpaceX …..Chandler decided to use this kids “ head injury 🤕 “ because he had probably listened to everything that had happened……this kid left the service because of his injury and Chandler jumped on the bandwagon! How convenient that these 2 had the same injury!
I’m watching live today, and no one has ever worked so hard at not working as Chandler appears to do. And he takes “talking to himself” to a whole new level with his invented employers.

Smith’s look of disgust when it was time to transition to Chandler’s defense team.. He already didn’t seem happy to be there but he definitely didn’t mind just adding cherries on top to how guilty Chandler is.
I can't believe anyone believed him for a second! I accidentally stumbled upon his interrogation before I knew anything about this case or what had occured and it was obvious he was bs'ing on SO MANY ISSUES that just didn't make any sense.
I loved his parting statement to Chandler, just brilliant. “You will only leave Prison to have the burial you denied your parents.” As for Chandlers statement I’m speechless.
I get why he would lie to his parents about a fake college degree they are paying for, but telling the same lie to the online friend you meet on a videogame chat? That's a lot of pride for someone who's accomplished nothing
Look at how conceited his friend is... this was not a desperate young man trapped in lies of success...this was guy who believedhe could absolutelyget away with murder. I suspect his pal will be violent due to his ego too.
he believed his own lies , liers feel good about them selfs, when they lie they have a dopamin rush the other reason they dont tell the truth is power !
People are giving the defense a hard time, but really, what can they do? The evidence is OVERWHELMING! They have an obligation to help this murdering a$$, but he certainly didn't give them much to work with.
Yeah, and it's really best for them to do as little cross-examination as possible on the actual experts. I can see exactly the kind of case they're building with their questions, which will be laid out at the end of the trial. They'll be trying to invoke reasonable doubt by showing that the prosecution has only proved that Chandler *could have* done it, not that he is the *only one* who could have. They actually did a decent job with Andrew Smith here. They got him to say that the gun is very loud and that a silencer can't be attached to the gun, which is important because no neighbors heard any gunshots. They got him to admit that he gives away guns, including Chandler's gun, without actually following legal protocol to change ownership. And finally, they ended the questioning as soon as he made himself look bad and defensive by unnecessarily snapping at the defense.
Every other person in his life that they could have called as a witness was made up. Imagine asking chandler as his lawyers. I wonder if he was like “there’s joe johnson, my boss at x job.” And then the lawyers asked if he could testify and then Chandler gave some bs answer as to why they couldn’t. Or if he was like “that person doesn’t actually exist. Maybe when they asked him, he just said no, he doesn’t have anyone he knows to be a witness for him.
I mean look at the evidence and during the interrogation process he pretty much admitted to everything. Dont get why this even went to trial? Maybe they didn't want to offer him a plea bargain of life in prison and probably just want to get the death penalty.
So True. 'The defense has made ABSOLUTELY no points. Is the defense gonna show up for him. Certainly - they have a strategy & some alt ideas of who did it.
Please tell me where the proof is that links Chandler to the murder? Put your emotions aside and think facts. Yes all the weapons show DNA of the victims, but how will the State be able to prove Chandler committed the murderous act? A lot of people are using their emotions to render a verdict - use your facts please. Im pretty sure Chandler did it, and he is a monster, BUT the state has to prove he murdered them and I have yet to see them do that.
@@STTDB1990 What interrogation video did you watch where he admitted to the crime? Please show me. He did NOT admit to anything. He called for his lawyer. Even any indirect comments he may have made is not enough to convict. Now go look at the Chris Watts case....that's a confession!
Chandler was buried even before the trial started. Should have pled guilty at least we wouldn’t have know about his sick, twisted mind. There is no capital punishment in Wisconsin I heard so either way it’s life in prison
Best opening statement from prosecution in a case in a loooong time. He hit every single point and the visuals, the way his voice sounds, & the passion!!! It’s like a movie
Yes. The prosecutor is outstanding. He didn't miss not one detail. The facts of the case were recited by him professionally. He was truly born for his title. Exceptional.
I just do not understand how anyone could commit such horrific acts . How frightening to know their "little boy" was a hollow shell the entire time ...
Yep, just watched parts of the Joel Guy trial too, sooo messed up. I feel like there’s so many millennials (I’m technically one but don’t fit the traits thankfully) that don’t want to leave the house, cut the cord and get a job, and then just decide murdering their parents is the best idea?? Jennifer Pan also. And they all seem to think they will get away with this, and don’t think the detectives will investigate their many lies (even before the murders, like their fake jobs and schools, etc)
@@cortneyrens I really don't think murdering parents and faking jobs is a major issue amongst millennials lol A case like this is off the charts uncommon
He is deeply ill. This is a mental disease. It's a pathology. If we keep judging these behaviors as " evil" we will never find a remedy. How can you cure evil? But if instead we see these cases as pathological, then we can treat them and perhaps even prevent them. I sometimes wonder if Bart, after learning that Chandler was lying would have thought for a moment that his son was deeply ill- and instead of judging him as a liar, would have sought out psychiatric help for his son perhaps he would be alive now. It's impossible to accept that these parents had no clue about any of his lies ever. Chandler did not start lying" when he became a freshman or a sophomore. Actually these aren't lies, these are complexed fantasies - a world that his brain created and it became his reality and identity. This is a desease that started when he was a young child. A lie is when you tell your teacher my dog ate my homework, or when you tell your mom that you took a shower when you didn't or when you say something looks good when it doesn't. His parents saw something was wrong with him and ignored it.
He's all those things and brilliant. The only issue I had with Brown that forced me to stop watching his opening statement was that he repeatedly sniffed back mucous, perhaps from a bad cold. (I have a weak stomach and I kept gagging 🤢
I feel like people are reading Andrew wrong. He’s not being disrespectful in essence to the people of the court he is clearly disgusted with the fact he gifted a gun to someone he deemed a friend who then killed his parents. He clearly did not want something like this in his life.
That's why he told the cross examiner, that it is "not her business", if he sold more guns. A respectful person would say "I prefer not to tell you" for example. And English is not even my native language, so...
I totally disagree. He was callous and disrespectful both on the stand and when he "gifted" such destructive equipment to his "friend". Since when do men give each other expensive presents?? Boy I just really don't get people like that. He knew the parents didn't want guns in their home yet he gave him that gun and over 400 rounds. For what??? There's a new breed of psychopaths loose in this country
@@keishapuryear8180 The only person to blame is Chandler. This guy may be arrogant but he didn't commit murder and Chandler didn't tell him that he will use the gun to murder his parents.
I like this DA. He seems to make it a point that the people acting as witnesses had nothing to do with it. Not just because it's the right thing to do (because the jury might possibly think otherwise), it will hurt the defense, as their main strategy seems to be instilling the idea Chandler wasn't the ONLY one who might have killed his parents.
Love "The Smith"..."as to how many weapons I have sold, that's none of your business, frankly." Way to put it to her. This isn't about Smith, it's about Chandler; and No Way is Smith going to let that lawyer spin this in Smith's direction. Keepin' it real, and on track. EXCELLENT.
They really brought every single person he used in his lies. Surprised they left out the dog since he also involved it saying the dog broke the fireplace glass

Andrew seems like the type of guy that serves for a couple of years, complains the entire time about the Army life until they got out, then act as if they were super high speed, highly committed soldier.
He didn't do anything while in. A brief stint in Germany and then a "head injury" from a humvee wreck. Some of us get blown up in a humvee without even a concussion. He b*tch babied out of the army real quick when it got too hard 😂 and now still uses rad code to spell things 😂
He seems to me to be the kind of guy who joined the military because "Deh Guns and Shooting and Violence!!"....and then finds most of the military time is spent hanging around and doing mundane boring stuff....
I am a former navy seal and top gun pilot and this guy is a typical low iq ammo carrying grunt. His head would be down on the floor while the real soldiers are doing the fighting. Studies show as little as 10% of soldiers actually do the fighting in a battle while the rest are focused on surviving 😂
Wow, I was rather shocked when he told the defense attorney, That’s none of your business”. I guess I just haven’t heard a witness saying that while on the stand before
Because normal ppl just respond they want to invoke the 5th amendment I'm sure they are told they can do that while being on the stand, he was extremely rude that was so wrong but also being a clown and talking like he did.
Chandler Halderson lied to every single person important to him, including his childhood friend, his brother and his girlfriend. He is a stranger to the truth.
Incredible to think the only time he’s shown any emotion (if you can call it that) is when his former friend, ex girl friend and police were asked about his non existent scuba diving job with the police. Not concerned at all that people know of his disgusting actions against his parents, the people who raised him and the woman who birthed him. No, he’s more worried that everyone knows he’s a bullish!t artist.
Definitely. All his lies, imo, were clearly to manipulate people into thinking he wasn't a nobody. What he did to his parents means nothing to him, just how he's perceived. Now that he's been caught his obsession with that doesn't seem to matter much to him now. After all, he was getting everything he wanted before pretending to be special. His "accidental tumble" down the stairs is bs imo. No one witnessed it just the aftermath. I think he purposely tripped and fell at the very bottom then positioned his body in a certain way to get attention.
My opinion Mr Smith was totally disgusted with Chandler and probably upset that he let him into his life, he definitely wasn't going to let Chandler bring him into it ,good on you
I’m guessing he probably also considers himself lucky to have not been a victim too. Can you imagine looking back and seeing that you went to sleep with psycho in the next room. Or swam with him near where he dumped his mothers legs.
@@Sunshine-n1n wow that last sentence hits hard! “Swam with him where he dumped his mother’s legs” the thought of that alone is hard to process - makes the actions of Chandler even more horrifically mind blowing 😰 the act of a total monster.
@@lolly5453 yes indeed! I pray God never ever ever allows someone so deranged cross my path. I’m sure Mr Smith had no reason to assume Chandler was lying about EVERYTHING!! Doesn’t it seem strange at all tho, that Smith, who testified to having tight finances would give away a $1,000 weapon and 500 rounds of ammo to a person he had never met? 🤔
Other than the victims themselves I feel bad for the public defender. This really was an indefensible case and she really did just resign herself to representing him as a matter of legal formality than actually presenting a defence.
Absolutely unfit for duty... his arrogant attitude 😒 would be a deadly risk to any service member depending on him to follow orders, work as a team or put mission above himself. This pal of the killer has all the marker of being driven to committing violence in order to protect his ego 😳
@@maryasdfghjklbeth not sure of the timestamp but it was almost at the end of his testimony! I believe that was the last question I asked of him by the defense.
My gut is that this witness being discharged was no bad thing. Not your usual professional conduct of a professional member of the armed force. Great trial,
I've got to feel for this public defender. I can't imagine what she thought when she was assigned to this case! Talk about hopeless. I bet she gets up every morning and thinks, "Oh no. It's morning. I have to go to court and try to free a monster." Probably considering retirement when this case is over! The state has presented a flawless case with extensive evidence presented.
I highly doubt she thinks she's trying to free a monster. Almost certainly she believes her client is guilty. Her role is to make sure the state proves its case beyond a reasonable doubt and that his constitutional rights to a fair trial are upheld. There is so little she can really do here, I agree. The state's evidence is overewhelming.
@@theforeverpuddle8754 Excellent points. I agree with you. It's her job to do what she does. My late husband was a criminal defense attorney (he was a public defender first five years out of law school and hated it because he didn't want to defend every client he was assigned but he had to do so) and then when he opened his own practice he could pick and choose his clientele. He turned down quite a few cases over the years.
I would vote not guilty on all charges. Why? Because the jury system fails too much. It needs a complete redo. Let a machine decide the case. How many times in the Chauvin case did we hear, "How did that make you feel"
The way Andrew Smith finishes every answer with “sir” gives me the same anxiety as when you thank the person at Chick Fil A too many times and you’re uncomfortable because it’s forcing them to say “my pleasure”.

Chandler realized that shooting someone in real life is considerably different than video games, and cutting them up is much more difficult when you don't have a light saber. I wonder if his immersion in the video game world influenced his grip on reality?
😂 I ain’t mad at this lol. Andrew is there on HIS behalf! He’s being honest and not going to be held accountable for Chandler’s actions! I’m not going to judge him on being a gun fan or on his personality, cause that’s his BUSINESS! 😅 It is what it is. I was entertained.
And often a "medical" discharge that's definitely not meant to cover up a dishonourable one because you're showing all the red flags. I've learned to be wary of young veterans, especially those who got out on a medical.
37:18 oh snap! This witness was very aware that those defense attorneys were not above implying that he could have some input or influence in the commision of these murders. He was ahead of their game.
There are quite some cases where people lie to their family for years, some pretending being a medical doctor and actually never having worked When the moment comes they’re about to be found out they kill their family. Very sick.
yea there are lots of cases like that. Young people pretending to go to college and kill their family when they are supposed to graduate. And people killing their wife and kids when they have pretending to go to work for years and the house is about to ve repossesed.
IDK if I were Andrew Smith I would feel a little bad for giving a high-powered rifle and tons of ammo to a psychopath. Not insisting that he follow basic safety protocol like locking it up. Walking away realizing that Chaz has *no* experience handling that type of weapon irl and after they'd just played around with it like some kind of toy. That's why I think he's defensive.
Andrew Smith gave a mesmerizing testimony! He came across as someone with nothing to prove, nothing to hide, disgusted with the situation, but resolved to do his duty and then forget he ever met these people. I don't think I have ever heard a response like, "That's none of your business" before.

For a military man, he appears unprofessional, undisciplined and disrespectful of the court process. He thinks it's okay to use profanity in the court.
I thought the same thing.. and to give away a $500 gun and other supplies. That is odd. I don't think he had any connection to the actual crime, but it is just strange that he didn't try to sell the gun instead of giving it away.
Not all military men are gentleman, alot of these guys are really young, and you are seeing immaturity and insecurity. Embarrassing, my husband is an Army vet and we were stationed in KS where he lives🤦🏻♀️
It says alot about this young man to be playing video games all day with another man while trying to be a father and husband. For his wife's sake I hope he grows up a bit over the next few years.
The Prosecutor is obviously disgusted with the defendant….everyone is….I absolutely love the disdain that he shows throughout the trial concerning Chandler.
The guy used two swear words during his testimony, one he apologized for and another being part of a saying that soldiers use. Big deal. It actually made his testimony more believable.
Based on psychology studies, they say people who naturally cuss while talking with others are generally more honest and authentic. (Not referring to a rant of cussing, though many do that)
Look at "Jacob Cayer trial", he curses for 3 hours in every sentence, so after a vit they stop reprimanded him & let it go... but this guy is a soldier, Jacob is a lunatic double murderer with delusions
Soil-dier is exactly right. What a loser this guy is. Playing vid games with a newborn baby having just been born. Seemingly no other job prospects, I am thinking. So off to the military.
Sounds like he was doing the wrong thing and upon investigation they determined he was at fault. I think he would have been a lifer if that didn’t happen.
With this whole case and trial you can really tell Chandler just killed his parents with little to no thought. Like he just did it and tried to cover it up. Didn't do any research. Didn't know what lies to tell or even how to cover it up. Like imagine just killing your parents with no reason or regard. He really truly cared for no one but himself
I'm honestly starting to wonder if Chandler purposely threw himself down the stairs. I know that sounds crazy but it's something that I've been wondering now for a little bit.
There is no certainty that he actually suffered any injury. The doctor who examined him was unable to document with x-rays or MRE any injury. The doctor relied on Chandler's statements to the doctor in the exam room to diagnose "a mild concussion". He may have been lying in this just as in everything else.
I wondered if it ever even happened. I think he got the idea from what happened to soldier friend Andrew Smith - just knowing what happened to him, not because Mr Smith had anything to do with any of it! He was clear on that point and I believed him
There had to of been people who were sketched out by Chandler prior to the tragic events that unfolded. The guy literally claimed to have gotten a job alongside rocket scientists at SpaceX yet he played video games all day. You have to be the definition of naive to believe that tale having known just a shred of his daily habits. Also just to add, he wasn't even finishing his bachelors, he was just getting his associates. I'm sure Carnegie Mellon graduates have a tough time getting a SpaceX job let alone someone with an Associates Degree.
Seems some young people must have known he was a liar but we all grow up with people like that and they don't kill their parents. With so many people having classes and work online/remotely. (unexpected consequences of the pandemic) may have allowed him to spin his stories with more ease just due to the fragmentation/chaos as everybody had to adjust to this new way of life. He just slept, ate, played video games, saw his gf, told lies to continue his life of less. His parents did the heavy lifting.
Actually, Elon Musk will hire someone without even a college degree if they are smart and driven enough. It's well-known. If Chandler had only put as much work into trying to get a job at SpaceX as he did with all the lies and trying to cover up the slaughter of his parents, he may have had a chance at SpaceX.
The guy _clearly_ did _not_ get a job offer from SpaceX, but there are a lot of different jobs at SpaceX, just like there are at Tesla. Lots of folks with lots of different skills are employed by Musk's companies. Like for instance, QA and testing, HR, DevOps, assembly teams, team leads, supervisors, etc.... A lot of jobs don't require four year college degrees. Obviously some do require advance degrees, which should go without saying but this is the internet. Not everyone SpaceX employees is a literal rocket scientist.
The defendant has had more “reaction” to this testimony that to any other so far. The eye blinking when the witness told about where CH put the weapon “temporarily” until his move to Florida to work at Space X was quite a tell. This made him uncomfortable and/or nervous.
"It is non of you bussiness evidenIty" I didn't know you can keep any information from court. Sometimes they get into a witness's personal bussines that has nothing to do with the crime. It is nice to be able to keep irreleavant things from being asked.
It depends on a few things. In theory you're supposed to answer any and all questions. The defense should have told the judge he was nonresponsive. However, the prosecution probably could have objected on grounds of relevance (Might be overruled on credibility grounds.) and of course if he committed a crime or thought he did, then he could have plead the fifth, which would have also allowed him not to answer. The defense was not really asking a relevant question, but she still did drop the ball by not asserting his answer as nonresponsive and either forcing him to answer or prompting the court to do its job. Disclaimer of course: I'm not a lawyer.
He's not on trial here. What he does with guns, apart from selling the murder weapon to Chandler, is not relevant to the case. He might be a questionable dude, but it is nothing to do with whether Chandler killed his parents.
It's really annoying when people take the stand & try to be a comedian the entire time. Two people were murdered with a gun that you provided.. to a stranger. It's not the time or place "sir".
He’s clearly loving his 15 minutes of “fame” with no regard for the family, the gravity of the crime or the solemnity of the courtroom. Very immature. I’m sure he’ll rewatch his testimony over and over.

To keep up with the lies you must become the lies and believe they are true.
I know...there really isn't much to say now, is there?
Casey Anthony’s lawyer was able to introduce enough chaos to get her off….I think that’s what Chandler was also hoping for.
True!
I never seen a case where the prosecution had such a flawless case. No witness had a creditable problem. Theres nothing the defense could do.

I wish he would stop cussing. I don’t care normally and I cuss like a sailor but there’s a time and place and a murder trial is not one of them
@@MsTrsForensicsInvestig8r I’ve heard the prosecutor cuss once or twice. Relax… The court even laughs when he cussed. You guys are ridiculous
Q:What made you think the room was chandler’s bedroom?
A: Ummm…the bed fort?
The stench of spoiled food and dried up tissues everywhere.
I think you mean "couch fort"😂
Well, Andrew Smith was surprisingly entertaining
My goodness! The constant yes sir, no sir is getting on my nerves.🗣 STAND DOWN SOILDIER!
So annoying!
Soil-dier is exactly right. What a loser this guy is. Playing vid games with a newborn baby having just been born. Seemingly no other job prospects, I am thinking. So off to the military.
@@mysid1111 he definitely thinks he’s impressive.
Hahaha right!?! Gamer dudes and army dudes are weird in their own right but to be both......
@@mysid1111 exactly
Chandler’s lawyers were completely ineffective. It’s like they didn’t even want to defend him. They should’ve convinced him to plead guilty.
@@SlickArmor Ensure.
What defence did they have???
Stunning testimony. "I'm not going to get f*cked for something I didn't do"
Roger that
I loved that guy. Basically told the lady to go duck herself hahaha "That's none of your business, frankly"
@@seffievondionysus3198 I am surprised a witness is allowed to answer like that.
I think they were all just scared that he Would be crazy enough to take out the whole room with an AK-47 that he hid under his chair

I don't think Chaz knows how to tell the truth about ANYTHING!!!!!!!
“did you get hurt in Germany”? Haha sounded like it was 1914 😂
lol
"These d4mn Krauts bashed my head in and now I am not the sharpest glass in the business, sir."
Sounds like he was doing the wrong thing and upon investigation they determined he was at fault. I think he would have been a lifer if that didn’t happen.
Thats where Chandler got the ideal of a head injury
People lie on the internet
With this whole case and trial you can really tell Chandler just killed his parents with little to no thought. Like he just did it and tried to cover it up. Didn't do any research. Didn't know what lies to tell or even how to cover it up. Like imagine just killing your parents with no reason or regard. He really truly cared for no one but himself
🎯💯💯
He's lazy
Yep he literally gave up entirely annihilating them too. Makes you sick.
He didn’t even fall. He just said he did. He lies about everything.
We all know he did. He copied Andrew's head injury.
He probably didn’t want to really hurt himself so he just said he fell or sort of threw himself down the stairs but carefully
I wondered if it ever even happened. I think he got the idea from what happened to soldier friend Andrew Smith - just knowing what happened to him, not because Mr Smith had anything to do with any of it! He was clear on that point and I believed him
This is an amazing Judge. A bright part of this trial, if any.
Smug little punk, very unprofessional for an Army Veteran.
I don't even believe he finished 4th grade

"It is non of you bussiness evidenIty"
I didn't know you can keep any information from court.
Sometimes they get into a witness's personal bussines that has nothing to do with the crime. It is nice to be able to keep irreleavant things from being asked.
Yup. It told it's own story, didn't it? 'Smith' was dodgy as heck, but a different story
God his poor ex girlfriend looks repulsed like she's going to puke

It's really annoying when people take the stand & try to be a comedian the entire time. Two people were murdered with a gun that you provided.. to a stranger. It's not the time or place "sir".
He’s clearly loving his 15 minutes of “fame” with no regard for the family, the gravity of the crime or the solemnity of the courtroom. Very immature. I’m sure he’ll rewatch his testimony over and over.

The scuba diving momentum , Knowing he never went scuba diving
He is certified in a swimming pool and a lake. His Uncle certified Mitchell and Chandler. Chandler lied about having a career where he used his certification as a diver on a search and rescue for police.
