    My grandmother made cards for everyone in the family for holidays. She just passed and left me many of her art supplies. She left an almost untouched full set of these. They are really intimidating for me but hopefully with these videos I can understand how to use them and make something in memory of her and get good use of them ❤

      I’m so very sorry for your loss, but how wonderful to keep on her artistic legacy! I’m sure it’s intimidating at first but hopefully once you start using them it’ll get easier and I bet your grandmother would be so happy to know they’re getting used ❤️

    4:39 I fullheartedly agree, when you badly need a sharp edge just use piece of paper or a ruler to block out the edge line. In oil pastel world we use stencils a hell lot, they are an enormous fun to include in the process. When you need a thin line, you can cut the stick diagonally and you will have fantastic tool to draw thin lines.

    If you sharpen your pastels, you can use a knife to to it. Then save the shavings to use as paint by just adding water to the left over shavings. That way, you don’t waste any of the pastels.

    • @cw4608

      I wonder if the shavings would be a bit like brusho powders if ground fine

    Great video, thanks for the tips! Your illustration is really pretty, I love the colours! Also, just a tip, if you do decide you'd like to sharpen your neocolour ii's, you could sharpen them over a dish or container and use the shavings as paint when mixed with a little water! :)

    3:17 At last someone who re ognized that Neocolor II looks a lot more gorgeous when used as an oil pastel. Use hairspray to remove tackiness. I prefer diluting with alcohol since it dries a lot faster and can be used even on thin 118 g/m2 sketchbook paper. Your video is fantastick you definitely know what you are talking about.
    There is class on Domestika by Clara Debray and that class is about Neocolor II used as a pastel.
    As for prices Neocolor II is significantly less expensive than Sennelier.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому +2

      Yes I really love using them dry as oil pastels compared to wet, and they blend so well anyway! Agreed, much cheaper than Sennelier but a very different texture too!

    Great video Katie! And I loved seeing the process of the DTIYS 🥰 A couple of ways I also like to use the neocolors - I love using them on their side to get a fatter softer line, I like to do this for clouds especially! And it makes snapping the crayons not so sad. I also like scribbling the neocolor and then going over with pencil, and the pencil only is seen on the areas I missed with the crayon (if that makes sense?) I've been using my neocolors as backgrounds lately (with water) instead of paint as it's so much quicker. They really are awesome materials.

    You can even heat, with a simple kitchen candle, up the tip of the stick and apply impasto, you can even use a painting knife.
    In your next video, this was brilliant, anyway, you can demo sgraffito. The trick is that, first you paint a base layer, optionally fixate it with a gentle spray, and then paint over that layer and scratch back. I use a ceramic blade pen cutter, Slice.

    11:04 far the most useful video about Neocolor II. As for fixative, just use hairspray, its human friendly, works even better than brutal art store chemicals. All pastellists I know use hairspray. I spray all my sketchbook drawings, two light layers are enough and no smearing.

    Absolutely love this video. Your bird is gorgeous. I made one very similarly a while ago by colouring small areas in different, vibrant shades. I did a grosbeak on some rocks with wet and dry leaves draped over parts of the rocks by also colouring both with many different smaller areas of colour. The difference between yours is that I used my non water soluble prismacolour pencils. I have a heavy hand in that I love the look of opaque, rich colour without transparency. It is so much fun to blend and put my colours right next to each other without interfering at all with each other. So far I haven't broken anything but the points at times, but I still hate doing that and wasting the point colour. I've learned a lot from this and can't wait to bring out my neos and do the same thing with them. XOXOJANE

      @KatieMoody  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching! 😊 I would suggest starting with a smaller set first - or even buying individual shades at first depending on which colours you use. Their standard box of 10 pastels wouldn't work for me as the colours are too bright, but the limited edition Beya Rebai sets of 10 (in either the warm or cold shade set!) would've been perfect for me to try when starting out! Personally I think it's a better way to test them out and experiment with how they'd work in your process, before splashing out on a bigger set in case you're not a fan!

      Thank you so much for watching! This fixative has quite a strong odor! I can definitely still smell it on my pages for a while once I've sprayed the sketchbook, but the next day or so I do find it dulls and now I can't tell they've been sprayed at all. Annoyingly every spray I've used has been quite strong odor so I wonder if there's a specific ingredient in there!

      Hi!!! Thanks so much for posting this! I also have some anxiety around fixative as I have worked on a giant watercolour piece with neocolours and because I have used the crayons neat on the piece (without using water over it) I feel it will need some fixative but wasn’t sure which one is safe to use that won’t ruin the piece or change the colours in anyway 🙏✨ Do you know if it’s safe to roll up the piece after using fixative to transport in a tube? Thanks so much :)

      Thanks for your quick reply. I am fascinated with the water soluble crayons….do you varnish your paintings when you use this product?

    Thank you. How do you complement neocolor with pencils? Which pencils?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому

      Thank you for watching! I usually use the pencils for the smaller details! Coloured pencils don't go over the top of neocolor so I usually use them first and go around them with the neocolors. They're also good for colouring in any gaps around the neocolor shapes! I love using Prismacolors or Luminance 🤗

    Thanks for pointing me to this. It's handy. I just want to ask. The pink pencil you used. Is it a regular coloured pencil or a watercolour pencil?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  17 днів тому

      No problem at all! It's a regular coloured pencil! Just a prismacolour, so not water soluble 😊

    If you want to mix a color, for example a particular shade of grey, will you mix it directly on the paper or on a separate surface?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  7 місяців тому

      Usually I mix it onto the paper! If it's not quite right, I'll just try again and cover it up. It helps me not be too precious with my art 😊

    Does a black ink micron pen write over the neocolor well (when diluted with water, after the paper dries?)

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  11 місяців тому +1

      I've tested it out with a few black ink pens and it works great! But yes it has to be diluted with water first - they don't work on top of Neocolor without the water 😊

    Can you work with them in combination with oil pastels?

    • @KatieMoody

      Hi Rose! I'm not sure, sorry! I've never used oil pastels so I'm not sure how they'll layer!

    • @berolinastrassmann
      @berolinastrassmann Рік тому +1

      You can use them side by side...as they both share a waxy/oily basis...but it would be a waste because the plus of Neocolor II is its ability to be water soluble, which you will not be able to do if you use oil pastels. Perhaps Neocolor I (wax crayon, NOT water soluble) might be a better match to combine with oil pastels.

    In a year the 84 have gone up about $100 CAN. Amazon is offering a pay as you go plan. Don't know if they are charging you interest. PS: What paper would you recommend to use.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому +1

      It's a shame the prices have gone up so much, I find that some art materials are harder to get overseas and so sadly they put the prices up higher because of demand! Just had a look on the payment plan on Amazon and looks like they do charge interest - about 12%! I started with the set of 40 and just keep buying individual sticks to top up my collection. I find they work best on smooth paper, so any smooth watercolour paper if you're using mixed media works well! 😊

      I'd go even further, just start with the smallest set which is 15, and buy the colors piece by piece, buy the colors that you really would use.

    May I ask - please explain the word ,,loose", I didn't really guess the exact meaning of it.
    Thanks in advance.

      Thank you for watching! 'Loose' to me means being more playful with my marks and letting go of it being 'perfect'. When I'm tighter and more precise, I find that my art loses energy and fun, so I try and do the opposite! I hope that makes sense 💛

    If you're going to use them so heavy and dry why not just get mungyo oil pastels. They're great

      Neocolors are sooo much less messy than oil pastels, and I find the texture very different 😊

  • @judithf9297
    @judithf9297 Рік тому

    This is crazy, these Neocolors ii are not made to lay down so much pigment dry, to push so hard and draw with them, really. They are an exceptional product meant to just lay down a small amount and then blend them with water, mostly in bigger areas. They give fantastic results, just like all Caran D'ache products. But not to use them so hard so they will snap and draw an entire bird with them. This way you can use up one in no time at all and the results are not even that nice. Why do that to s quality product? Some people or "artists" they just don't know the right and the wrong way. Too bad. Common sense.

      I really disagree - I don't think there is a right or a wrong way with art supplies at all! Isn't that the beauty of creativity? I love that things can be used in different ways, and I'm constantly inspired by seeing other artists use materials in ways I haven't before. It creates new texture and new styles that I find so interesting! If we all created in the same way and used the same techqniues, art would be really boring!

    I’ve seen @thefrugalcrafter sharpen her colors onto a palette so she can use her shavings like gouache. Helps with adding details if you use a small brush too!
