    Numerical order by Caran d'Ache makes sense, but not in a linear way, it makes sense on a color wheel. Colours ending with 0 are 24 pure colours, from 010 to 240, then those ending with 1 are the pure colours mixed with white, ending with 9 are the pure colours mixed with black, and those with 2 and 8 at the end are mixed with different shades of grey. Those above 249 are said to be created by mixing two of the colours from the group below 249 (as far as shades go, not pigments).

      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you for the info! I can see them on a colour wheel...but still, they had to be moved for a more pleasing linear look. 😁

    I love my Neocolor IIs. Your kingfisher came out really nice. I usually finish the details by using them like paint, either from shavings I’ve put into a palette, or just picking up directly from the crayons. They are ridiculously fun to use, and I was highly amused by your frantic dislike of having the colors out of order. I can commiserate. Their basic sets (i have the 30) are well selected I think. Even the 15 set will let you paint just about anything.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому +3

      I must have them in order! 😂 You're right about the 15 set; it's a great combo of colours. I found the 10 to be just a bit too limited by comparison.

    Loved the editing in of the laughing. 😂 I really enjoyed using my Neocolor IIs - they are quite the happy surprise when you add water to them. I'll be comparing them to my other water-soluble crayons/pastels next week or the week after that. I'm really looking forward to it! I loved watching the watercolor go down in the background of your painting and when you added the water to the pastels. So much fun!

      Haha thank you! I just couldn't get those swatches right. 😂 I'll look forward to seeing them pitted up against some other products. Are you including the Marabu crayons? I am on the fence as to whether I want/need a set of those too, lol.

    This video was done so well, I can only imagine how long this took!! The neocolors are soooo tempting and might go on my birthday or Christmas wishlist eventually. They just seem like so much fun to play with, like crayons but for adults! I’ve had those moments with swatch charts where I make one glaring mistake or misplacement but then I figure that just gives it character😂 it always seems to happen too with every swatch chart I make. Your new chart is very aesthetically pleasing though, and much better than the first one you showed! I loved your artwork so much. The neocolors are so opaque and allow for a lot of vibrancy it seems like. The ability to add the white highlights after the fact really helps the kingfisher pop out against that background. I always need to do multiple layers on hot pressed paper too because they come out soo patchy ahhh!! That final layer really helped. I think this is one of my favorite recent artworks you’ve done! I hope it lifted your spirits a bit too!

      Thank you, I am feeling back to being (mostly) cheerful, it was just a passing slump, which usually happens for me at the start of winter. The Neocolor II crayons are so lovely to use and the intensity really builds up. I am impressed with how much white I was able to get, considering I had loads of wax already on the page. High quality! ❤️

    LOVE THE ARTWORK!!!
    I also LOVE the Neocolor line especially the watersoluble #2. I started with sets of 15 of the $1(non-watersoluble) the #2. Both sets had the exact same colors and numbers. I've added quite a few single colors especially greens. I've just started getting into oil pastels. I bought a set of 12 Neopastels plus several single colors. Watched an artist do a video using all three on the same picture. I knew all of those three Caron D'arche products used the same color numbers for the same hues. After watching your video, I did a quick check of the small Luminance set I have. From what I can see, they're also same color with same number. My guess is that numbers tell you when they were added.
    I picked up a cheap white cutting board. It seems to have the same surface as the board Caron D'arche sells for creating washes out of watersoluble products only bigger. Love using Neocolor 2 in a wash.
    I keep a pencil sharpener and use the bigger hole to make points on the ends. I don't have do many so I collect the shavings in old pill container and also use a spare cheap palette with the shavings.
    Looking forward to seeing what else you'll do with them.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому

      Some great advice tips in there, thank you! You'll have to let me know how the cutting board goes; I am sure there must be others which are comparable to the Caran d'Ache one. I will have to try sharpening my Neocolors in a large hole sharpener, or more scarily, using a knife. 😬

    I always find it fun seeing people experiencing these for the first(ish) time :D They always seem more unique and strange to work with than they actually are. For thin lines/details you could always try using a fine brush and grab some of the pigment, or scrub the pastel/crayon onto a stiff plastic sheet and pick up from there as a pseudo palette. I have 12 colours in a travel kit that I use the former method with and it works amazingly, plus if you ever need to cover a large area you still have the pastels themselves

    • @BeckyTregear

    Beautifl job! And kudos to you for going big. I need to do that more! I adore these crayons - and yes, they're crayons! I have both the IIs and the Is. Started with the IIs because that's what my local store had, but what I really wanted were the Is. Even with the IIs, I overwhelmingly use them dry, and only wet them if I need better coverage of the texture of the paper. I had experimented with soft and oil pastels, but they are SO messy! Then I heard about "wax pastels," and quickly realized - oh, they mean CRAYONS! The price point on the Caran d"Ache was intimidating, but once I splurged on that first pack of 15 IIs, I fell in love. They are pretty much my go-to supply now. Every once in a while I'll crack out the oil pastels, and it's been even longer since I've used the soft pastels. Just too darn messy! But the Neocolors have such gorgeous colors, they are so smooth and incredibly pigmented, and I like the fact that they do force you to work more loosely and can't do fine details. If I want fine detail, I use colored pencils! I finally got a 10 pack of the Is, and it's amazing the range of colors I can get out of that little pack. And as you noted, I've used them a LOT, but the tips are only just rounded. I did finally cave, though, and got the 30 pack, which just arrived yesterday. So excited! Do you have more of your Neocolor works on your channel? I'd love to see more videos of people using these!

    Noo Becky, don't remind me of how fun these crayons look! Those bright colors are stunning. The orange contrasts the blue so well, which makes for such a vibrant painting.
    I had a set of around 40 or so in the past and while I absolutely adored how they look, I didn't actually seem to use them very often. They'd also snap quite easily (which makes them less appealing to look at) and getting detail was difficult without sharpening them (which wastes so much pigment). I ended up selling them. But whenever I see artists use them I feel the urge to get another set because they look soooo beautiful!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому

      Haha I can understand that! I don't use them often but when I do I am always struck by how good they are. I have found the little tin of 15 is great to have in an arty travel kit; just a few colours for on the go. Maybe that could be a solution if you wanted to get a few more again?

    I ALWAYS struggle with dark backgrounds. They need SO many layers. So I understand your frustration. Love how vibrant neocolors become when you apply water. they just come to life. Yeah I did an A3 size, a glass and grapes for an art colony, organised by our mayor, so the works went to the town, it took me ages to finish it. Working large is a task especially with the dark background. then all the colors need to be very saturated and that takes time to achieve in watercolor.

    I've got a 40 colour tin of these. I've had them for years and I love using them. The cover is totally different and calls them 'Watersoluble artists crayons' so crayons isn't wrong. I use them with water soluble pencils which adds some nice effects. Thanks for the review.

    Your Kingfisher is lovely. Personally I would have changed the color of the rose so it wouldn't blend in with the feet. But if I did that I probably would end up not liking it. lol. Well, I think I have the ten set from an art subscription box. Yep it is the ten set. Thank you for sharing.

    Great job! This was a great video. I have a few individual colors and love this large set! How do you think the Neocolor II pastel crayons compare to Derwent Inktense in vibrancy, ease of use and lightfastness? Both brands look wonderful so it’s hard to choose!

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 роки тому

      Both products are wonderful to use and provide some intense colours. Inktense might well be even more saturated in colour. The big difference is the Neocolors have a more waxy texture whereas the Inktense blocks are more like a dry pastel before adding water. Also Neocolors lift more easily, whereas once dry the Inktense are permanent on the paper and don't budge with more water. The Inktense pencils are also very nice. I think Neocolors might be more lightfast overall, but might be worth checking both C-D and Derwent's websites for their full colour charts that have all of the lightfast ratings for each colour. 😊

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  9 місяців тому

      I haven't sprayed fixative on them to know for sure. Possible oil pastel spray fixative? Watercolour fixative might also be ok, but honestly I'm not 100% on that!

      @@BeckyTregearThanks Becky. I’m a little confused whether to treat it as a watercolour or an oil/wax pastel that just happens to be able to be used with water. Its chemistry seems similar to water mixable oil paints which, if I’m correct, you treat as an oil paint but it can be used with water. I think I just broke my brain.🤣

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Рік тому

      Ah yes, there are a lot of confusing products there, haha! As far as I understand, any wax or oil based product that is water soluble, has had its chemistry altered so that water molecules will bind on, rather than being repelled as they do with regular wax. I'll try and figure out a way to show this and explain it more clearly! But basically Neocolor I crayons won't mix with water, and Neocolor II crayons will mix with water. And if the word "aqua" is in a product, it will activate with water. 🙂
