  • Y'all are VERY passionate about the Caran d'Ache wax pastels, so here we are again! Last time we tried the Neocolor II and this time we try the Neocolor I. The difference? These aren't water soluble!

    Hi Kasey! I believe that these are just fancy crayons, but technically pastels are pigment and the best have minimal binders. Some binders reduce the price for the more binder, wax, oil, chalk, etc. the cheaper the supply! Most of the time wax crayons, like Crayola have very little pigment and this is where you can get texture from the binders (wax) that build up on the surface of artwork. I believe that you have made it work for you and your truly amazing style! I will also mention that the better your supplies the more permanent the finished artwork will be. I hope you have enjoyed creating these as much as we have watching you do so! Please take care, be safe and enjoy the Holidays. Thank you for sharing your “year” of the crayon artworks, you are truly inspirational and so fun too!

      Thank you for this explanation! I love oil pastels and have dabbled in soft pastel sticks as well as pastel pencils. I really enjoy working with Crayola crayons as well, and I have some "artist crayons" to try. Now I know that these Caran D'Ache crayons exist, and I will probably graduate to them if I decide I want to go further in crayons than Crayola can take me.

      They're lightfast, highly pigmented, basically wordless caran dache luminance pencils essentially. Gosh I can't wait to add them into my artworks. Beautiful

    • @unboundbytiffany
      @unboundbytiffany Рік тому

      Also pastels atleast soft pastels don't have wax or oil. Atleast not in a larger/prominent amount. They're actually clay based. Thats why they have that chalk like texture. And also why they have (usually) such pure pretty pigment (color). And are usually water-soluble as well as able to be blended with the same solvents used with wax and oil pencils as well. It's very very interesting to see caran dsche make a 'wax pastel'. Not oil, not soft (clay), not the pan pastel (no clue what magical binder is used in that one haha) but wax. Hence why people call them crayons (well that and the obvious crayon shape haha) and compare them to Crayola crayons. Which is hilarious to me. But to be able to put down larger amounts of heavily pigmented, highly lightfast pigments that are wax but also as she mentions, not super waxy in texture, is just amazing to me. These are so awesome. And to use with the neocolor 2s is brilliant as these are water resistant, and neocolor 2s water-soluble gives you endless possibilities. With just precious pigment/color. Sorry I obviously think these are magical and are a wonderful addition to any artists arsenal!

    The difference between crayons and wax pastels is about forty bucks, honestly. Artist's grade crayons, really. More pigment, better binder, but they're literally exactly the same thing. :)
    (Also, was if you that tested out the bambino clay crayons? I bought a set and they are amazing. So if you're to blame for this...thank you. :D)

    • @Boxofcare666

      Arent crayons usually wax based, and “pastels” oil pastels?

    • @conifercrow
      @conifercrow 2 роки тому +13

      @Inn3r Warri0r Both are literally identical when you're talking about *wax pastels* vs. oil pastels, which are something completely different than the neocolor 1s. (Caran d'Ache does make oil pastels, called Neopastels, too. THOSE are oil pastels.)
      The difference between a crayon and a wax pastel is literally just marketing. The grades are different between kids' crayons (less pigment, more binder or filler) and artist's crayons/pastels (way more pigment, more expensive binders), but the actual thing itself is the same.

  • @momo7989

    Wax pastels literally are crayons but higher grade. They hold better pigment, easier to blend or lay and most are water soluble. They are crayons.. That's why I was so confused why you kept saying they aren't crayons. If they're artist grade they should blend, they shouldn't leave that texture or that weird buildup... Unless you use a textured paper. Which I suggest you try with them if that's the effect you want. They should also have a better lightfastness and better for art to last.
    Pastel can be wax, chalk or oil. The word pastel just means a crayon made of pigment binded by resin or gum.

    The application of the Neocolor I look smoother than my Neocolor II it is that probably the other binding agent influences it.
    The colour scheme is a little different from the Neocolor II. I bought the 84 set, which was the largest at the time,
    and about six months later it was expanded to 126, and I ordered the missing ones in the art shop and swatched them at home
    I noticed that I couldn't paint the sahara yellow and looked at the pastel on it, and it was a Neocolor I.
    I said that the next time I was in the shop, and they said that they would order them again, and I believe that they forgot.

    Personally I differentiate between pastels and crayons based on the type of binder used to hold the pigment.
    This is just my own feelings:
    -crayons: wax binder
    -oil pastels: oil binder
    -soft pastels: chalk binder(less)
    -hard pastels: chalk binder(more)
    But I’m sure someone who is more versed in producing art supplies has a better grasp of this concept, lol.

      The crayons (most ) are lightfast. Preserves your child’s artwork. Crayola Crayon drawings fade and look muted within a few months. Caran D’Ache are artist grade wax crayons with AP safety standards.

    Finished this video in 2022 because for some reason I only watched half of it before Xmas but this now has me wondering - if 2021 was the 'Year Of The Crayon'.... What is 2022 the year of???
