  • These are water resistant wax pastels or crayons. They are richly pigmented and very high quality.

    When you draw lines with the white wax pastel on white paper and then add watercolour over it, the effect is really cool, when the white structured lines get visible 👍

      Is that what happened at 12:59 on the front of the building with the cross? He put that in with white crayon and painted over it? I was surprised he didn't mention that it seems like a good feature, instead of masking fluid as long as you don't want to paint over that area later. Might have been nice to see the colors on black paper also to see how opaque the colors were. A shame they didn't blend better

      @@recoveringsoul755 The cross on the front at the building is probably made with a white gel pen, not with a crayon. But nevertheless, it shows the effect I mean. You draw first with the white crayon, then add watercolor and then magically the lines get visible 😍.

    Hello from Switzerland! :) I always enjoy seeing people review my childhood art supplies. To me they were just children‘s supplies, but this video gave me a whole new perspective on them! I still have mine, so I might have to give them another try.

    I just finished a piece with Neocolor I and coloured pencils on sanded paper. For blending I used Zest it (or solvent). Blending worked like a treat with this method and the coloured pencils went on well on top.

      you can actually blend them with your finger, which a lot of people don't seem to realise (and yes, blending them with a finger would have covered the cold pressed paper)! I used to have a tin as a child and the older tins actually said "wax oil pastels" (not sure why that was changed, because the product is the exact same) - which is what they are. They are not wax crayons. They are more akin to very oily high-quality coloured pencils, or very hard/waxy Neopastels.

    Hi Teoh, thanks for great content, as always! One more way to use Neocolor (i have watersoluble ones) is to draw with the side of a broken piece, like the ones your daughter made. It gives you a nice broad mark. You just need to rub off the waxy layer on top first, pushing it a bit more against the paper. Btw I also have a toddler daughter but we share my set of crayons 😆

    Hello Teoh. Thanks for your video. When using wax pastels you can also use cotton swabs to go over, that helps a lot in getting the colors to cover the paper grain, and also colors can blend. For large areas, a piece of cotton or paper towel can be used. This also allows smooth color transitions even on more textured paper. I have not tried this particular brand, but several other brands... they work in much the same way, I suppose Caran D'Ache should not be that different.

    An interesting medium. They retail here quite reasonably priced, might pick up a box. It is a bit strange that you cannot get pigment info on crayons or coloured pencils in general, where it is very normal with watercolor paints. As those mediums are getting marketed nowadays as artist'grade it would be professional to be transparent about pigments.

    When a fixative says “pastel” it means the soft pastel. I think oil pastel like watercolour, acrylic and oil paint should be fixed using the varnish fixative...

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  3 роки тому +5

      I have Polychromos. I haven’t used them much though but that’s because I’m not a colour pencil person. Polychromos is excellent. It’s like you’re painting with pure pigment. It’s very satisfying, hence really worth the money.

    • @teohyc
      @teohyc  2 роки тому +3

      They should work well on coloured paper. Go for smoother paper. Pastel paper has more grain and you'll need more effort to fill in the white of the paper.

      Hi! Canson Mi-Teintes works very well with these crayons. The paper comes in many colour sets (greys, blues, tan), sizes (A4, A3, A2). It has a rough and a smooth side, so you have the choice according to what you want to draw. Happy painting!

    • @teohyc

      Spray/fixative is needed if you want to store some other art on top. E.g. It's needed if you create art in sketchbooks with pages touch each other.
