- These are water resistant wax pastels or crayons. They are richly pigmented and very high quality.

When you draw lines with the white wax pastel on white paper and then add watercolour over it, the effect is really cool, when the white structured lines get visible 👍
Is that what happened at 12:59 on the front of the building with the cross? He put that in with white crayon and painted over it? I was surprised he didn't mention that it seems like a good feature, instead of masking fluid as long as you don't want to paint over that area later. Might have been nice to see the colors on black paper also to see how opaque the colors were. A shame they didn't blend better
@@recoveringsoul755 The cross on the front at the building is probably made with a white gel pen, not with a crayon. But nevertheless, it shows the effect I mean. You draw first with the white crayon, then add watercolor and then magically the lines get visible 😍.
Teoh hello. I remember watching your videos when your daughter was only an infant, now she is a Young artist. She is adorable in her red glasses. . I started watching you because I loved how you said the word RED. My husband is Asian and I love the way he talks.. It makes me happy. I'm from Michigan. He is from Tokyo. We have been together for 38 years .We Still laughing and loving. I wish you and your family the best happiness .I like your reviews and art.
I love caran d'ache ! We used to always recommend them in our art shop. I've been using the neopastels for ages they're my lads
Are they lightfast?
Are they lightfast?
@@elsagrace3893 You can check Caran d' Ache's website. It says they are lightfast.
Hello from Switzerland! :) I always enjoy seeing people review my childhood art supplies. To me they were just children‘s supplies, but this video gave me a whole new perspective on them! I still have mine, so I might have to give them another try.
I just finished a piece with Neocolor I and coloured pencils on sanded paper. For blending I used Zest it (or solvent). Blending worked like a treat with this method and the coloured pencils went on well on top.
Oh wow! Thank you so much for this tip! I got them just recently and I am still in love
you can actually blend them with your finger, which a lot of people don't seem to realise (and yes, blending them with a finger would have covered the cold pressed paper)! I used to have a tin as a child and the older tins actually said "wax oil pastels" (not sure why that was changed, because the product is the exact same) - which is what they are. They are not wax crayons. They are more akin to very oily high-quality coloured pencils, or very hard/waxy Neopastels.
i love watching your videos. your reviews are great!! thanks teoh!
I love these wax pastels and have tons of videos on my channel using them with watercolors. They are perfect for an initial loose sketch that resists watercolor. Thanks for a great review!
LOL I like how you incriminate your daughter over the internet. Haha she went on a mission to break those! Super cool techniques!
Wow this is the most in depth review I've ever seen!!! I love that you use lots of mixed media, too! :D Thank you so much!
Caran D’ache sent me the pigment information and lightfastness ratings when I emailed them.
Thanks for sharing this. it is good to know the information exists and that the company responded to your request. 👍
i said it a lot but i love Reviews
It's nice to see you mix different media in one piece😃
A great video! Love the art shown in this.
Hi Teoh, thanks for great content, as always! One more way to use Neocolor (i have watersoluble ones) is to draw with the side of a broken piece, like the ones your daughter made. It gives you a nice broad mark. You just need to rub off the waxy layer on top first, pushing it a bit more against the paper. Btw I also have a toddler daughter but we share my set of crayons 😆
You're brave! I get my 3years old nice supplies but not artist quality and each our own set
Great review. It was quite helpful to see how the Posca pens layer over top of them, thankyou for sharing!
You can tell your daughter has an artist for a dad, the white crayon in her box is the only one that looks as if it’s never been used! 👍🏻😂
Teoh, thanks so much. This was exactly what I needed.
Hello Teoh. Thanks for your video. When using wax pastels you can also use cotton swabs to go over, that helps a lot in getting the colors to cover the paper grain, and also colors can blend. For large areas, a piece of cotton or paper towel can be used. This also allows smooth color transitions even on more textured paper. I have not tried this particular brand, but several other brands... they work in much the same way, I suppose Caran D'Ache should not be that different.
Well this was different! I wondered about these, thank you!❤️
Very thorough review, thx Teoh!
An interesting medium. They retail here quite reasonably priced, might pick up a box. It is a bit strange that you cannot get pigment info on crayons or coloured pencils in general, where it is very normal with watercolor paints. As those mediums are getting marketed nowadays as artist'grade it would be professional to be transparent about pigments.
Oh wow, now I Finally understand the difference between the water soluble and water resistant crayons
It took a video showing it for you to know what soluble and resistant mean?
please review the Neocolor II 🙏
Thanks for sharing your techniques! Will definitely try them out next time. :)
very calming video 😩
I love the water soluble Neo color 2. Btw I sharpen them in a pencil sharpener, works great and you can get thinner lines.
I Love this. Congratulations!!!!
Excellent video 😊
When a fixative says “pastel” it means the soft pastel. I think oil pastel like watercolour, acrylic and oil paint should be fixed using the varnish fixative...
Sadly Caran d’Ache only offer 40 colours in the Neocolor 1 series. They used to have a range of over 120 years ago. It’s a shame they stopped producing them.
My own box looks exactly like your daughter’s, lol..
Thank you for this review. I had no idea why anyone would want neocolor 1. Now I get it.
Wow....love these! SOLD!!!
great review -- very useful, as I love using the water-soluble Neocolors, and was wondering about the non-water-soluble ones. (In fact, if you ever decide to make a review video for the water-soluble ones, I would look forward to watching it! )
Thanks for this video! Wow, your daughter has some high quality art supplies!
after some messing about i have found that if you can use white neocolour 2 on cheap wax crayons or neocolour 1 crayons.
You can sharpen these crayon in a pencil sharpener to get finer lines. I buy them open stock because I don’t want colors that I don’t use..
Hi Teoh! Loved this video, and now I'm curious about the neocolor 2 one! A question: do you have Faber Castell Polychromos Pencils? and if yes have you ever make a review about them?
I have Polychromos. I haven’t used them much though but that’s because I’m not a colour pencil person. Polychromos is excellent. It’s like you’re painting with pure pigment. It’s very satisfying, hence really worth the money.
@@teohyc Thank you!!
Maybe you look rather for an Colouredpencil artist doing reviews.
I really appreciate your videos, thinking about purchasing the neocolor 2. Have you tried them out on a colored pastel paper? Got any recommendations for which paper I should use with them? 🖌
They should work well on coloured paper. Go for smoother paper. Pastel paper has more grain and you'll need more effort to fill in the white of the paper.
Hi! Canson Mi-Teintes works very well with these crayons. The paper comes in many colour sets (greys, blues, tan), sizes (A4, A3, A2). It has a rough and a smooth side, so you have the choice according to what you want to draw. Happy painting!
Hi did you upload the video review of Caron d aquarelle 11 crayons please? Been looking so far unsuccessful
The fixative you showed is for pastel charcoal and pencil. That’s referring to chalk pastels. Sorry, but that product isn’t made for anything waxy.
Very sad that they only have 40 colors of NeoColor 1. I keep hoping they’ll bring back more colors. Metallics are nice, but don’t really count as more colors.
Great video! Do you think you would need to fix/spray if it’s on a canvas as part of a painting?
Spray/fixative is needed if you want to store some other art on top. E.g. It's needed if you create art in sketchbooks with pages touch each other.
@@teohyc thanks for replying😊 I thought maybe it would smudge on the glass when framing my painting. Anyway that’s good to know thanks.
Are there any differences between oil pastels and these wax pastels?
I watch his videos cause he brings intersting stuff for review 👍
These wax pastels must be blended constantly with a stump , oil or gamsol for best results
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Good review … too bad there’s always a broken one in the tin 😊 Not cheap to say the least.
On dickblick there is pigment info for the Neocolor I crayons, but not for the Neocolor II.
Are they like wax colored pencil ?
Kinda, but the water resistant effect is more obvious here.
I find that they are a bit Prismacolor. I use them together and it works great because of how similar they are.
"Wax Pastels" when you're too cashmoney to call it crayons
They were water soluble long ago !!!!
Neocolor II is watersoluble
It's not pronounced Caran -Dutch.
Its horrible how people never try to educate themselves about the proper pronunciation of names. I see a lot of American artists on you tube be so rude about it.
If in doubt you can call the company and see how they pronounce their name.
Oh shut up, don’t take people mispronouncing things so seriously. Do you think we all know Dutch? No, we’re here for the quality of the crayons, not quality of pronunciation
Lol! Internacional calls are not included with most phone plans.
