  • Hello! Today I'm sharing a video all about the Stabilo Woody pencils! I've been using them for a while now but wanted to share all the different ways and techniques you can use them in your art. I do a lot of swatch tests and show how they layer onto other mediums too, as well as a very important comparison to how they work with Neocolor II pastels. Do you have any Stabilo Woody pencils, and what do you think? I'd love to know in the comments 😊 Have a great week and speak to you soon! Katie x

    Great video Katie. I’ve got both Woodies and Neocolors. I prefer neocolors. I also think it’s a false economy with woodies because the colour is only about half way down the pencil barrel 😮 If you start sharpening them from the other end, you’ll be shocked!

      Thank you so much, Hanna! Oh wow, what a shame! I suppose you wouldn't have much of the pencil to hold if it went all the way down but that's disappointing considering the price of them!

      @@KatieMoodytrue, but since these are water soluble, you could dig the remaining lead out and use it like watercolor/gouache once it got too short to hold. I like the idea of having the wood to hold them, and being able to sharpen them, but it’s disappointing they have so little lead.

    I don't own Neocolors, but they have been on my wishlist for a long time. Used Woodys for years now and watching this video helps me understand the difference between the two. Thank you for showcasing these products together.

    I like to dip/soak the woodys in water before using them. Another artist on UA-cam, Ulrike Hirsch, is amazing with these. She uses them in a few different and fun ways. Very inspirational!

    I have an older style called Stabilo Tone. I can’t find much about them. They were released in the 1990’s and are discontinued. I had young children and no time to do art back then but I found them again and so I loved your video demonstrating how to use them 😊

    So helpful! Thank you for testing the woodys and neocolors side by side. I learned so much from your video. I have been trying to decide if I should buy some neocolors or woodys. Based on your demonstration, I think the neocolors will work better for me.

    I wouldn’t have thought to use these over pan pastels! Biggest difference these are to Neocolor II’s is they are a shiny finish. I like using my woody as a starting sketch tool under oil pastels!

    I use the Woody pastels as an addition on the Neocolor 2 30 set which makes the colour range of the two sets quite a bit larger and more complete. A good thing since Neocolor isn't cheap 😆

    The bright colors is the biggest reason I haven’t pulled the trigger and bought these. I prefer pastels and muted colors, and I can get those in Neocolor II and some other brands.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому

      Totally agree! A lot of art supplies always start with bright colours but it's the muted shades I want! I'm really glad that the neocolors has such a wide range, I don't think the Woodys will be bringing them out but you never know!

    I use and love neocolor 1s for the finishing touches and linework. They work really well for this (more opaque than neocolor2). Where I live Woodys are crazy expensive. Neocolor 1s are actually cheaper.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  11 місяців тому

      Isn't it wild how prices can vary so much from country to country 😫 Interesting that the Neocolor 1s are more opaque than Neocolor IIs too!

    Really interesting. I am just stating with illustration and want something that will block in areas of colour. Do these smudge at all? Also wondered if they are lightfast?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching! They don't smudge much, unless you wet your finger and move the pigment around! I find they have a similar transfer amount to neocolor pastels. I'm not sure if they're lightfast but as they're marketed as children's art supplies I don't think they would be 😊

  • @pollyoz2193
    @pollyoz2193 Рік тому

    Interesting video, thank you. Did you ever try any water based media over them, either over them straight, or as a wash? I’m curious how gouache, watercolour, and acrylic stick to them, especially when the Woody is used thickly.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому +1

      I haven't, though I think with a wash or very watery paint over the top it would pick up the colour for sure! They don't seem to 'seal' over time either, and the pigment is quite strong so I tink you'd have to be really careful! I can see acrylic working better over them compared to water based 😊

    • @pollyoz2193
      @pollyoz2193 Рік тому

      Thank you for your insights. Picking up the colour underneath is what gouache can do, which is either a problem or a feature, depending on your use

  • @ladyhollman9534

    Interesting. They’re more like real oil pastels dry. Opaque enough to sit atop each other rather than automatically blending in. Curious if they “rub” blend together dry? I don’t always want my yellow turning my blue green. My interest is peaked.
    Thanks for the review.

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Місяць тому +1

      Yes very true, they definitely sit on top of each other! They do blend together a little bit, but I'd say more 'smudging' than 'blending'! They're definitely not as sticky as oil pastels so there's less pigment to blend!

    That's interesting they look like they work well over acrylic paint. I don't have any Woodys but I have lots of acrylic and there's not much that goes over it. Did you add any water to the acrylic paint first or was it pure paint on the paper?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому

      They're really durable, I think I'd struggle to find anything they won't go over! It's pure paint straight from the tubes, I think I used the Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paint 🤗

  • @KriRama
    @KriRama Рік тому

    Do they blend better when u add the color to a wet page?

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому +1

      They do! It definitely softens the lead better when there's a lot of water on the page and in turn they blend a little easier, so I'd recommend a thick paper stock 😊

    Can you use either the Woodys or Neo II on canvas or on top of acrylic paint on canvas.? If not, what IS another medium that I can use with acrylic paint on canvas besides oil pastels. I’d love something with the vibrancy of oil pastels but one that I don’t have to only use lastly on top of acrylic ( vs under acrylic) and one that I know will fully dry. I assume what I’ve read over and over about oil pastels - only using on top of acrylic and not ever under acrylic and the fact that they don’t ever fully dry and can smudge is actually true.?? And even if I choose to use them on top of acrylic, paint on canvas, can’t I spray that with a fixative to hold the pastel in place?? Would love anybody’s experience and feedback and would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Місяць тому

      Yes they work on top of acrylic paint! I've not tried it on canvas but I've used them plenty over acrylics in my sketchbook 😄 Oil pastels do take time to dry but you can use the fixative to keep it in place! It just needs a few light layers of pastel fixative spray - some oil pastels are more 'sticky' then other brands so some smudge a lot more. I know some artists do this mid-way through so they can keep adding paint layers on top too!

    They look so chubbywubby cute, but they’re $8 each in NZ…which is the same (freaking high) price as a Luminance pencil or Copic Ciao… Neo2s and Polychromos are 3.50 each, still high but… come on!… so… ah… yeah, Woodys are cute and I can afford them …. but I’m not paying that for what is supposed to be a cheap kiddy crayon, especially when I only want them for their looks, haha. (I have a 40 tin Neo2s anyways) 🤗

    • @KatieMoody
      @KatieMoody  Рік тому +1

      Oh gosh, yes the price there is super high! I definitely think the neocolors are better in versatility and colour range so your 40 tin sounds perfect as is 😄 If I had to choose I would go neocolors every time!
