- This is the fourth number from the B-52's 1978 Downtown Cafe show. It turns out I'm not the first to post this video on UA-cam. It was copied by someone from the Georgia State University archives and has been sold on eBay for the past five years. I guess we should be flattered that someone thought it good enough to steal. Watch out for the wheel of karma, though.
Thank God for UA-cam!! I just never thought I'd see anything like this. Brilliant. So much more real than most of the over-produced crap which passes for music nowadays!
Yes, we do realize how precious. It captures an instant where they were young, strong, beautiful, and blossoming as a band. Their not polished yet but the raw talent and sound almost brings a tear to your eye. I wish I could have been there.... thank you kmills74!!!
"...maybe I'll see you there, if I can do my hair!"
CLASSIC B-52's!
The coolest people that ever lived right here
This has always been my favorite B-52's song forever, but since I got UA-cam (ie.cable modem last week) and discovered the exceptional use of cow-bell in this tune, it has moved up 1000 notches to "best song ever"!!!
....If aliens are monitoring earth, they must have picked up on this song 30 years ago and decided it was time to make Contact!! Look at all the U.F.O. sightings in the last 30 years...Coincidence?...the B-52's and myself think not!!!
One of the best bands ever, totally unique, didn't hear them until 1979, but didn't see them, so jealous of people who saw them in 79/80 totally orgasmic
Great to see this! I saw them several times around this period and up to around 1982 or so. I knew Ricky & Cindy mostly. Their first record, a 45 with Rock Lobster and 52 Girls was put out by Danny Beard who owned Wax 'n Facts record shop in Atlanta and was Kate's boyfriend back then. He put it out on his small label db records and gave away tons at their gigs, etc. I actually still have one. When they signed with Warner Bros, the 2 tunes were rerecorded for their first album but I always liked the versions on the 45 best. I'm so glad so many people shot film back in those days- and have posted here... many thanks!!
Great story and info! I gotta hear these cuts on the original 45! I'll be on the lookout for em now, unless u wanna sell yours? :)
thanks for the cool background information !
groundbreaking artists, astonishing. I never knew this was out there. So glad to see it.
Petula Clark said in an interview that she also preferred her version best, but it was pointed out that her version had no cow bell to which she thought, then replied, "I like the B-52's version better too!"
This makes me want to follow Cindy around with a cowbell
This is American High Art pure and simple. They will be remembered as artists. SO much fun. So original. The singer is HOT! Still has it's edge!
I saw them about 7 months after this at the Roxy on Sunset in West Hollywood.
All the people in attendance were a bunch of record industry snobs who just sat there
and watched. Me, my brother and his friend were in the aisle dancing
by the second song.
Good for you guys! They are such a fun band! Cheers
The voice of one of the girls satisfies something in my head, kinda like scratchin an itch.
This is the most punk thing ive seen all night
Do you realize just how precious this is.
I've never seen this on Vid before. I was at that club that weekend.
Joseph
Vraiment cool. les B-52s sont le vrai "New Wave" des 80s rock. Moi, j'ai etait au concert a Toronto, Bravo!
Cool oui mais dommage qu'il manque le riff de guitare à la fin...
I am speechless; this is gold. thank you!
The best! Nothin' like them before or since.
Reminds you of a time when things were normal... and music had melody... and singers wore clothes and had talent... awesomesauce performance
Marvellous. I wish I had been there... Thank you so much for posting this gem!
Love the English accent impression from Cindy and….I wanna tea!
I bet toddler baby girls everywhere love this version.
It is very cute and perky.
Heavenly.
Excellent Rare Film,,,amazin' where it all
starts at,,Cheers
long time B52's fan, just found this.............there is hope for this planet
My favortie Cindy song from the B-52's is Give Me Back My Man. Until this song, I hadn't heard either of the girls sing lead.
Chills. Thanks so much for sharing all of these. Genius.
This should be the National Anthem...
MY NEW FAVORITE SONG
Soooo rawwww!!!
it's prob'ly been said before: More cowbell.
it is a pity there is not the guitar riff at the end, it is the key moment of the studio record and it's absent here...
So awesome that these videos exist!!!
@stretchpost I seem to recall this being reviled as "what music has come to these days" by older people when it first came out.
At two weddings in the 80s (my sister's, and a family friend's), I danced with my sister, and the very pregnant sister of the family friend, to ROCK LOBSTER, and not one other person joined us.
just brill..
I want some tea!
Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Maravillosos y únicos, como siempre. En esta ocasión, además, mejoran la canción original.
Wow, I really love this band. they have so much freedom with how they want their music. Some may dislike them as if they were crazy but really its whats fun all about. I think they were just too much ahead of their generation but surely they'll rock!!
I hope aliens are intercepting the transmission of this song, cuz they will surely think that we are the coolest, freshest, dopest, most in-effect race in the galaxy!!
This is one of the best bands in history doing one of the best covers ever!!!
Petulla Clarks version is intercepted by aliens=Independence Day scenario plays out.
B-52's version= Close Encounters + E.T.
C'est dommage qu'il manque le riff de gratte à la fin car la prestation est exceptionnelle.
Ah, Youth… 💖
Your lucky to have seen them. This is not their best song but still I'd love to get a chance to see them.
@demonhoopa you are so right! My brother introduced me to The B52s, Talking Heads, Ramones and VU when I was about 11, and I've railed against the mainstream ever since!
Nothing like being downtown
Always think of Seinfeld when I hear this song
david byrne made the recordings with them that were later released as the EP "Mesopotamia" . . . so there is a definate connection there
I always thought this was the oddest inclusion of a song not written by them. Totaly bizarre and totaly cool.
LOVE THIS!!!!
Love this
GOD! I wish i were there!! a true PARTY!
great, thanks
OMG!!!! xo
raw..love it
i love Cindy Wilson
"I wanna beer!!"
Is that classic or what? I'm gonna cry
This is amazing. You think Talking Heads ever saw something like this, and were inspired?
👏👏👏👏
yeahaa, love it!
It sounded great but... I could have used a little more cowbell.
sing it! DOWNTOWN!
This is an awesome, some consider this simply noise but i say it is very raw and inspired. Infinitely better than Petula Clark's version, imo. But then again, I love noise.
Great, Great, Great
Sounds like EMBALO Brazilian beat. Cooooooooooooll!
It looks like a place in London where NEW groups came to play -shit - memories!
:-o WOW!!!! BONÍSSIM!!
Fantástico
I know you posted that 11 months ago but if you haven't yet, Buy their first album! You will NOT regret it!
This is awesome =) where can I watch/listen to the album version?
@OpieJohansen Granted, this is the cutest thing I ever did see, but don't go disrespecting Petula!
'gotta have more cowbell!
Petula Clarke I know you are dancing
Wow, brings back to when times were not as so CRAP as now. Looking at things these days makes me sick. So...I forgot the word I wanted to use describe today, but to make things easy most things these days are SH*T! I'm just a misplaced 25yo dude I guess. lol
damn . . .
Fred can't even say ONE WORD in tune.
wow
this is got a VU grove to it? The organ maybe?
I'll come
hey everyone on youtube let all go downtown now or are you a square, what do you say.?
more cowbell!
You're too young to be nostalgic! :) Things weren't perfect then, either. In many ways, we are better off now.
how about now? better off?
downtown cafe = highland tap
Not bad; but the version by New Orleans' "The Cold" is better.
@mikecaz1 More like a spoon to cause a stir.
This rocks with radgey rawness. The original is so gay.
uh, fred? little more cowbell okay?
punk from the south
Thank goodness I know they have better songs, this may be an interesting cover but not timeless or anything. Just a decent piece for the time.
a travesty, this is rediculous .
Damn, that was painful to watch and listen to. They were much better once they got out of their "black and white phase" and learned a bit more about performing music.
These guys are the Brittany Spears of the 70s, they suck without over production and post production cleanup, real music overlay, synthesized vocal tracks, etc., etc.! This is fucking noise................
Awful
