- Last but by no means least comes this final number from the B's 1978 Downtown Cafe performance. I hope everyone has enjoyed these delightful glimpses into the formative work of a great American band. Thank you B-52's for all the great music.
One of the heaviest new wave/post punk jams ever recorded.
This was 46yrs ago. Great music stands the test of time and this certainly does.
The B-52s are one of those bands who most people like myself thought was some one hit wonder thing...then you start digging and realize this band was on a whole other level of genius. :)
Very true!
Yeah! No kidding! I loved love shack, but the. What tfff every song i listen thanks to the dictator UA-cam tells me too was great! And supposedly DEVO was responsible for the creation of most metal bands like Slipknot and Korn
strangersound yeah , me too
I love B52's Forever 👍👍👍
One hit wonder? Really? They are the opposite.
Still not nominated to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A real shame. This is raw rock n' roll energy.
That is so wrong 😮
How they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is beyond me... They are the most original band of all time IMHO! RIP Ricky
The "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame is too busy honoring people who never showed any interest in the genre.
When the "#1" songs of 1978 were Bee Gees, Andy Gibb, Player and a Streisand/Diamond duet... The B52s were creating music that made you feel alive! I miss that feeling...
well said
and they did it for another 20 years
Yes they are for life not death; like the Marine Corp. we don't die for anybody, we live for you:to be a Marine we are not allowed to die for anybody not even Jesus Christ; so saith the Lord!
That's my favorite from all the songs! When she growls I get goose bumps.
same for me!!
I'm not no limburger
There was nothing like this in music when the B's started. I saw them twice, and they were hilarious and very professional all at the same!
It´s incredible how cindy sings well, without any of today´s digital tricks, like auto-tune. The girls are always in tune, just wonderful! Thanks you B´s for your fabulous music, then and now!
The B-52's were the band that lured me into New Wave. Soon after I discovered Talking Heads and before long I was heavily addicted to XTC. Good times!
I was fortunate to see the B52s and the Talking Heads one week after the other in London's Hammersmith Palaise venue in 1980. I had never heard either band before, my older brother hot me the tickets as a gift. My impression was that the B52s' show was much more exciting and enjoyable...still feel that way!
@@knowhere60 here in the Netherlands both bands were on a one night only, double bill show in 1980. Sold out within days and i did not have a ticket. Still regret it today
Thanks for posting these clips. They are priceless. The B-52's first two albums are classics, and should be in everyone's collection.
Takes so much courage to be original in a fake world, and they were as original as can be. Brilliant
Why they should be in the HALL OF FAME! Unique, New, their own sound! No one sounds like the 52"s
I fn agree!!
I cant EVEN begin to tell you how much I LOVE THIS!
Yeah well suck it up for now because that be the only fresh breath of air you'll get.
Arguably one of the most badass , jamming tunes of that time period .
This is sick... unbelievable band. Unheard of even now, nonetheless the late 70's. I thank my older sister for having a tape of these guys lying around when I was a kid. Set a high music standard for me.
Totally ahead of their time.
Incredible!!! wow!!! Cindy Wilson was/is amazing. she kills it at this small cafe show! a true talent
Zachary Kahn natural talent.
i am one brotha thats all in with da b-52"s
Ditto!!!
So am I!
Great performance! Hard to believe I'm just hearing the B52's about now. I remember Roam and Love Shack but after giving them a listen the past few months, I am definitely very IMPRESSED with them. Better late than never.
I am sooooo late on the B-52s.. Better late than never
They were just as good in concert, there still doing it ( a little older and a little slower though) favorite song, dance this mess around!
Ricky's guitar is really sounding like thunder at the beginning, wonders don't cease what distortion pedal he's using to get that kind of crunch out of a Mosrite in 1978.
This is the ultimate sh-t right here. I love you with every fiber of my being, B-52s. Never stop dancing this mess around.
I love and respect and admire them so much....the joy and magic in their writing and live shows is some of the best out there. Great memories listening to the Red and Yellow albums, I will never forget these songs.
I'm so glad we have this record of B52s excellence and unique performance style from over the decades! Thanks for uploading it here.
guitar player was ahead of his time. christ.
Heck yeah. Dominant but leaving plenty of space.
not my original idea but somebody compared this to what Bernard Sumner was doing with Joy Division at the same time. Ricky Wilson is why the first two lps are classics. And with only 4 strings!
He was...RIP...gone at 32yo
Fuck AIDS.
Jeff, I think there is something to what you are saying. Ricky Wilson is so underrated as many 'new wave' guitarists are. He seems to have created his own weird four-stringed tuning. He's playing chunky bass parts on the bass strings and those twangy guitar parts on the higher strings. I remember seeing it on SNL c.1979(?): only partial strings! He's playing both bass and guitar parts almost simultaneously and live, his stage SOUND is so dirty it's totally punk. @@jeffn66
true greatness in its raw form.
You got that right; your a genius and you apparently don't know it; nor do I.
This a treasure for B-52s fans. Thanks so much for posting.
Oh, I am so jealous. I was about 7 at this time, but I would gladly give up the years to have been a part of this. And I was at my peak during the "grunge" years..I would trade early B-52's for Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Smashing Pumpkins all balled up in one.
Unique. One of a kind! Love these guys.
i love watching Fred play his toy piano.Brilliant!
I had every album. They are so good, unique and FUN!!
piratbway grab diskograppphy
Seen them in a bar early 80s before the first song was over everyone was dancing, and we danced the whole show, great show, great memories.!!!
I don't think the crowd knew what they were witnessing. very tight performance. first record wasn't even out at this point, but you can tell they knew what they were doing,
I have "Rock Lobster" as a ringtone on my smartphone. I remember when they first started out playing in clubs in Agusta. Kate is a cousin of a Univ. Of South Carolina classmate. A totally awesome and unpretentious woman.
"Doesn't that make you feel a whole lot better Huh?"
This was my youth. B-52s forever!
I remember the first time I heard this, I was like WTF is this crap? Now almost 40 years later, it's on speed play in my mind. Fkn rocks.
Oh, and the line was "Im not no limber girl" until about three years ago when I finally looked it up.
Early shit was they're best. After 79 was Shit. Saw them in Dallas in 79. Best ever#!!
wow... 1978 ! thumbs up 4 youtube and kmills74 ! :-)
Still...after all this time....America's best pop group EVER!
I need a time machine. Asap. This is just .. amazing.
Ricky and Cindy together, always incredible every single tune they ever did! Thanks kmills for these gems!!!
I am still dancing this mess around💃🏻. That song “Dance This Mess Around” still sends me. Love ❤️ the B-52s.
well done, thanks b52s and especially you Cindy.
i both this record in yugoslavia in '79 (yellow album) and it's the best one i've ever heard..mind you.there were some outstanding albums even that year(joy divison, gang of four, etc)but THIS makes me bleed allover, again
thank you for this kmills
Ricky and that guitar!!!!!!
No Idea how in luv I am w/ this ...all time classic
This band needs to be in rock and roll hall of fame. How can it not????? Amazing band . Wow takes me instantly back 25-30 years to parties, girls ...thank you
Can you imagine going to a local home town coffee shop or bar and seeing these guys trying to develop their act. Must have been great. And REM was playing at a bar down the street. WOW! You couldn't find that sort of thing in Portland, Maine.
Fuckin A that's bad ass revolutionary musical stylings
The guitar is genius. Cindy is priceless.
Genius! Brilliant! Pre - 80's New Wave with its alternative/punk groove... Classic! Best times to be young and alive! "Doesn't that make you fell a whole lot better now?" SHAKE! BAKE! SHAKE! Dance this mess around....
Fantastic. I love The B-52's. The raw video and sound... classic!
OMG! Totally Forgot this was my favorite B-52's song OF ALL TIME!!!!!
Amazing footage from a time long gone. Classic recording of a classic performance! I just wish i was there.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
If I had a time machine this is where I would go.
brings back memories of 6th grade in Charlotte NC, when they were still underground (1980) and immensely popular
unbelieveable. thank you. saw them at UC berkeley in 79. turned college into a great experience. the kooky rhythms and driving mosrite guitar were amazing, still generates smiles.
The band was ahead of their time!!!!
One of the best things on UA-cam, even after 8 years :)
Welcome to Year 11
I was in Atlanta / Little Five Points when the Athens scene was going off and it was a "you had to be there" kind of thing; I can't describe how rich and textured the art was, everywhere all the time. but I didn't get there until the mid 80s and honestly didn't realize that it was happening this far in advance of my arrival. Fucking astounding!
By 1978 their sound was already fully made. Great stuff.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, and one more time, Thank you.
LOL "Do the Aqua-Velva," perfect geeky Fred-moves for that one. This is a song close to my heart.. when she sings about why won't he dance with her, well she's crying it, not singing. Beautiful job.
I was just 4 years old then... What a cool treat to see this!
reminds me of days gone by. saw them perform live in Kohala Coast Resort with friends and we danced so much we had cramps in our legs.
woooohoooo
Punk punk punk!
show me something more amazing than this?
not possible. Purely sublime music.
Thank you. Kmills
Amazing. 1978... And everyone thought Hotel California was so great..
enjoyed the band and especially this song when it first came out way back (lol) during the disco/punk days.....this was a very popular song more than rock lobster to us diehard dancers.
Woulda been so fun to be there dancing. If I could have been born in 59 rather than 79. Also would have gone tons of Dead shows, coulda gone on tour starting like 73
THE Great American Band
thanks for fond memories relived,
cheers,
pipewatcher
i'm from Peru in South America, and i was born in 1980, but my parents got 20's in that time and they were fans of b's, they remenber people got crazy at parties with these fantastic freaky music, they say, those years were incredible cause new wave bands like b-52's, blondie, adamn ants, sparks, pretenders, gary numan, talking heads, ramones, soft cell, human league, devo, ultravox and many many others made them and his friends feel and enjoy music without prejudices,
thanks for posting this
gotta find a time machine.
you're in one. But it only goes forward. one. day. at. a. time.
oh please let me come too? we'll pick up Belushi and some theatre people from UCI. it will be fabulous!!
Thank you for sharing this here. I love it~! Over half a million views rocks! I'm so glad i was a teen in the 70's
The guitar sound is unreal!
i first saw them on snl as a youngster it was a big change in music at the time opened my doors to other stuff like iggy,x,ramones, cramps miss them days of discovery.
I remember going to Brown college RI in 78, Police opened up for B-52's. The police were booed off stage, we came for the B-52'S. I remember they didn't play downtown but man did they play, combo of pogoling(sp) and slamming. It will always be imprinted in my memory
Anthony Amaral I was here for this. I was 17.
Maurice Peck wow
This is got to be my favorite all B52's song. My buddy sent me a clip of them in TX, he knows how much I still enjoy them, 17 and at this concert, excellent man
Hey hamburger ; the most original band in 1978 besides Bowie I am 51yrs old or young and still this band gets my legs going.
This was great. Been a big B's fan since seeing this tune on Sat Night Live while sitting in the corn fields of Iowa.
you can hear the hunger in there perfomance.does not get much better than this
.... amazing this footage around ... love it!
Go Fred! The man can boogie. I also like seeing the dancing crowd.
My favorite song of ALL their hits! Her voice,Kate Pierson's, especially on the recorded studio release, especially in the beginning, was HOT! ;) Then again, she's STILL hot!
Got the best groove ever shaped my youth
So tinny and crude brings back great memories😎😎😎
you can not believe how glad I am you have uploaded this. So many thanks are owed ! thank You !
B-52's and the Ramones at the Philadelphia zoo. Like if you were there.
That sounds amazing.
This is like fresh air. Thank you so much for giving this to us.
I saw them shortly after this at the Bayou in DC. I got to hang with them on the roof and gave them tips for the best thrift shops in town (Ice breaker-Fred asked me where I got the great bowling shirt
)This is back when they did their own wardrobes! Great show and thanks for the round of beers!
Mustve heard this abt ten times at tge gym blasting in my ear couldn't help but be in a happy mood, I grew up on this music digging thru my uncle's vinyle records takes me nack to a simpler time "can it be yhat it was all so simple" also seen them at Pomona fair good stuff
Deserved greatness followed for this fun group.
I love "Do the Aqua Velva!"
it's wonderful to remember those times ...
I love the B52's had no idea they came out of Atlanta - always thought the redhead chick and Freddy Mercury should have done a song together
Why is this band so f*cking awesome?
When this came out I danced this mess around to 'Dance This Mess Around'
When they invent time travel i'm booking a trip to meet Cindy here, she's unbelievable!!!
Cindy has a great voice here - only 21 in 1978
