I got to see Devo and the Talking Heads in 1977 when they were still 'underground'... they were excellent performers, real naturals.
Devo came out in 1979 ...
That's awesome.
@@Paulvon128 there is old footage from 1977.
@@Paulvon128 They started in 1970 and performed here in Akron at the Crypt starting around 74. They were signed in 77 and the first album came out in 78.
Devo has no where near the talent as the TALKING HEADS.DEVO only had one hit song,WHIP IT and nothing else. Its only that one song ,the hats and wierd act that these nerds have for a claim for fame. They are one group that will never make the HALL OF FAME !!
The drummer is killing it
not only were they way ahead of their time as songwriters, but they were fantastic performers as well.
Totally agree. ☺️👍
They fucking sucked ass
Aaron Kerr Your simplistic opinion is noted. However, any informed analysis would conclude that DEVO were fantastic visual and conceptual artists, and they were excellent players and performers. The inability of listeners accustomed to mainstream genres of popular music to recognize their value merely affirms it.
@@aaronkerr5993 Your ass I presume? If so then that must be some tasty de-evolved conformist ass. Congrats.
Hmmm this song isn't a great example of their songwriting songs.
These guys were just so weird, creative and talented. They made some tremendous music.
No Lip-Syncing here, they are actually playing- a rarity for most band's TV appearance. I love that Mark Mothersbaugh is getting the whip sound from the noise oscillator on a Minimoog,
Theres no real melody to sing !! Just some rap like lyrics.
Yep, there is a wrong bass note and the guitar is out of tune. It's wonderful, live music.
All Fridays performances are live. ... one of the best being The Jam delivering a blistering rendition of Private Hell!!
@@jamesburnsfisher3304 so what you're telling us is you have a case of aluminum ears? Coors beer?
Correct.
This song was great, I wish the 80s were still here. I was there, I lived it!!
Great DEVO Fans you can Vote for DEVO for the class of 2021
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Vote them in Thanks !!!
That's a hard beat on drums to keep going that long that steady. This song would give me carpal tunnel
Drummers weirdiers than bassistes
Mark hitting the synth with the whip for the sfx sample is damn cool
I'm so glad that all of these fantastic performances are preserved. Thanks so much, Shout Factory.
"Crack that whip! Licorice whip!" -Waylon Smithers
I'm so glad that all of these fantastic performances are preserved. Thanks so much, Shout Factory.
When the worlds not going well like now, put on some Devo and have a feel good laugh.
It's an incredible live performance. Down to the whips! So tight and yet so wild...
1:40 the camera man has an energy dome on, fucking awesome.
That puts a a smile on my face
Goof catch
Lol is that what those hat things are called?!? That's some good shit👍
Hilarious
This is one of my favorites. Mark's snazzy style is high energy perfection.
never imitated and certainly never duplicated, there was only one Devo. No one dared try to do what they did. They are alone. And they were incredible.
Heartily agree.
Actually they were a band of kids called the coneheads that are like devo in speed, also amazing band.
@@MegaLuxury1 Wasn’t that Dev2.0?
@@nmulae no its coneheads, if you know how to read.
Frickin' musical AND performance genius!
One of my biggest musical regrets was not seeing Devo live in concert back in 1981 in Toronto for like $10. I bought and luv' the albums Freedom of Choice and the New Traditionalist when they came out.. I was a long haired rock n roller into Led Zep, Aerosmith, AC/DC etc. Their so underrated, I want to nominate them into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame!
I was fortunate enough to see them in the mid-80s when they were touring the NEW TRADITIONALISTS and OH NO, IT'S DEVO! albums. The shows were incredible.
Pure genius
Love this song
Still cherish my vinyls, even after my stereo clocked out.. damn I miss Bob2
Love their version of the Stone's track Satisfaction. I can't get no! ⚠️
So much better than the original lol
Love DEVO. Thank you to my dad for introducing me to all kinds of music and new wave. An asshole though he may be 😂
This is so weird, but that's why I love it. I'm grateful for UA-cam. Their earliest music was made before I was born or very young. I'm glad I can still see these performances online.
Devo was good.
An underrated band that never got its just due.
You are the truth !
They were terrible and now days wouldn’t even been give man a chance. Terrible shallow music with shitty lyrics.
@@aaronkerr5993 you obviously have only heard whip it.
@@aaronkerr5993 Back to the Greta Van Fleet videos for you.
@@aaronkerr5993 Dude, every genre , all of em completely followed DEVO'S subversive lyric style you have no idea what the F you're talking about,, literally the starting point of all alternative music from 71 to now.
All thersongs are taking a swipe at Man's Herd mentality and provicked its fans back in the early days.
DEVO Completely avoided the so called AOR top40 chart Bs, and only relented in 82 with whip it.
,No you like a nice little escapist type lyric, beside the point BS that does zero for your mind, ,, to boot, DEVO is the only band in rock history born after 2 members, ,both students at KENT state ,, you know, the college that gave us the First College murder spree on campus, by our own National Guard during a Anti Vietnam rally..
5 students including a young 20 year old lady friend in attendance with the Bass player.Gerry CasaleI, (I know you have seen the picture of that youngun face down in a thick pool of blood from a head shot by the our very own NG.
THE lyrics In all of their songs have deep meaning and are very informative.
But know you like a band with fake posture , pretentious, rock god crap with explosions, shiney things to look at , and smoke,,, with mirrors.,, back to your lame music.
I love the people in the audience too cool for the domes…they are the only ones not smiling. Was there ever any doubt that the geeks would inherit the earth? 🤣
fantastic whipping job and the hats are to die for.
energy domes
✨
❤️
This music is so unique and outgoing.
Devo is great.
Their drums were always the most important part imo. The constant high hat beat here drives the whole thing. Always stuck around Devo just to appreciate the drums, in addition to the rest. Same thing with a band like The Feelies, the drums are just too good.
DiamorphineDeath Alan Myers aka the human metronome.
The drum beat was copied from a recording they made of Robert Williams, who was playing in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band at the time. www.rhino.com/article/interview-gerald-casale-of-devo?fbclid=IwAR0Ey5P0esFoVvMLzvqzQmiJarfnGL_W0ll0mHqUjOIdZuZDfr8-GFV9tzc
@@bandoogore I suppose there must be a connection between that and the fact that Williams & Hugh Cornwell's Nosferatu has a track on it that's actually by DEVO: ua-cam.com/video/NpvxO3-Q65s/v-deo.html
I see what you did there at the end....
Kinda has a bit of punk to it the speed with the disco style beat
One of my fravor band in 80s and now.
Even camera man had energy dome
Great song, Great band. LOVE the 80's
Devo never die... Chile 2021 the best sound and music....
Now THIS aerobics class I'd GO TO!!!
I am 21, my dad showed me these guys years ago, Honestly great performers let alone the dope song. Makes me kind of wish I was around at that time. Cheers to those of that generation, I’ll find the greats of mine!
I always loved this song, my parents on the other thought it was weird. Lol
How in the hell did they develop their sound? Nothing will ever sound like DEVO!!
They just decided that synthesizers, guitars, bass, and drums could all be on equal footing in a kind of reductionist New Wave act.
Check out “Let me Tickle Your Fancy” by Jermaine Jackson…Devo played on that song, a strange and great collaboration!
It sounds like all the lower notes were flatted out, and the highs were in sharped.
If you like DEVO, listen to the band The Network, a side project of Green Day, which has a debauched new wave sound, heavily inspired by DEVO
I loved it when they incorporated treadmills into the act.
That tour was the first time I saw Devo and my mind was blown.
This was the ultimate nerd band at one time. The idea you could be both nerdy and aggressive was a novel concept at the time.
Devo & Sparks are SO underrated! Seriously so influential and should have been in the R R H F years ago!
WOW! Sparks...
I nearly forgot about the Sparks!
Great bands have come and gone and many people will never hear the great music we grew up with.
@@chrischapman276 Even more than DEVO, Sparks never went. Check out their latest: ua-cam.com/video/YWb3KpvAz8s/v-deo.html
I got to see them in 1983, at Michigan state university, great show
DEVO Rocks!
A great song that makes you want to move no matter how many times you've heard it. Also, they look fantastic. Lol
Punk rock! Whip it!
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018 great DEVO fans
HERE IS DEVO !
i am eternally grateful for growing up in that era.
the late great ALAN MYERS , loved to play the real drums , and he loved BUDDY RICH !
Real bling drum set up ... pushing buttons and technical bubbles in the trunk
I was in 6th grade when Devo appeared on 'Fridays'. I loved everything about that show, especially their music guests. Devo definitely cut their own niche!!!
So much fun!
For we are not men we are DEVO😊
Mothersbaugh was a WildAss!
That’s awesome
Seen these kats in 1982 here in The Bay Area for a signing at Tower Records. I was ecstatic!!
I remember that. There was a loca lweekend tv show on kron called SFO. Devon appeared on that tour and performed/were interviewed.
"Crack that whip! Licorice whip!" -Waylon Smithers
DEVO Needs to be Given The Kennedy Awards and The Lifetime Achievement Award and The Grammys and Be Inducted to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Amen Repent
DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE 👍🙏🌠
Been a fan since 78 I was 11 year's old such a awesome band!
I missed a lot of Devo's television appearances at this time as I had just gotten my own apartment and had no television.......or phone.....or car....or food. Those eyes the good old days
I think *everybody* missed this one: ua-cam.com/video/VGQvxce33OQ/v-deo.html
Applausiii !!! 🎉
I was so happy in the 80's!!!!!! I miss a lot!!!!!!
Great Band. Nicknamed them "The Flower Pot Men" in Aus.
Great Stuff!!!!
So happy this exists
I love this band... I danced to their songs at the dance clubs..
I'll put DEVO's new wave up against any Punk bank from that era ...
Classic !
Mighty mighty.
R.I.P. ALAN
love how the cameraman is also wearing a energy dome hat
DEVO por siempre 👍👍👍🇵🇪 saludos
DEVO belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even though there are only three of them remaining, they were a force--both musically and theatrically. Fuckin' Alan Myers--the "human metronome." That guy never stopped moving. Best rock and roll concert I've ever attended.
The rock hall of fame is now a joke bringing in rappers instead of real rock artists that needed recognition for their work. Anyway it's the fans that matter most to a rockband and not that stupid award.
@@dredgewalker Hip hop had a huge effect on rock! Ask Aerosmith and Anthrax!
@@thescatman5029 both rock and hip hop influence each other but they can still keep their genres separate. Heck the Chinese influenced the Italians on making pasta but you don't see them calling spaghetti as a Chinese dish. This is why the newer generations are easily confused since they don't know how to make the distinctions even in sex. You can say classical music too has influence in rock but you don't Bohemian rhapsody classified as classical music don't you?
VERY PRECIOS ARCHIVE
One of my favorites! Love it Hahahaha 💕
Epic!
Brilliant! love this !
Flawless
DEVO baby
Love that the camera man in front is wearing one of those hats too xD
I remember seeing this on TV and thinking "Hell yes! Finally Devo are getting some recognition!" And also, "I liked the yellow NBC suits better." lol
Whip it good !!!
i love how he slaps the minimoog
Buenas canciones de Devo para un baile de fin de semana 🦋🦋🦋
HAPPY NEW YEAR ! , GREAT DEVO FANS ! 2017 !

We love you devo
I got to see them at radio city music hall on Halloween night in 1981 great concert!!
The sound engineer was on point for this one.
IKR? This is a live performance but those drums sound like they're straight off the record.
Meraviglioso !
Great clip.
imagine woodstock with devo
I remember when I had the 8 track tape! Love it!

Who would have thought same old thing I say when I was a kid step on a crack break your mama's back and turn it into a song, way to go back in time and then bring it to the Future!
Step on a line, break your daddy's spine...
