- The B-52s (styled as The B-52's prior to 2008) are an American new wave band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards). Ricky Wilson died from AIDS-related illness in 1985, and Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar. The band also added touring members for albums and live performances.
This song was recently covered by Juno Birch, a confused alien housewife from the ‘60s with over 200,000 Instagram followers. Juno Birch, who looks like she just fell out of the sky and is trying to blend in as a human, is a drag artist with one of the most unique styles attached to her name.

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.
World famous music artists performed on TopPop: ABBA, 10CC, Bee Gees, The Jacksons with Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Earth & Fire, Queen, Golden Earring, Boney M, KC & The Sunshine Band, Chic, Donna Summer and many many more.
I was in art school in NYC in 1978/79, and Keith Haring was a schoolmate. One day he told everyone 'you have to go see this new band tonight', and everyone went and danced and danced. Then I went back for the summer to my family home in Maine, and every day I would ask the folks at the local head/record shop, 'is there an album yet by the B-52s??'. And eventually there was! :D
I lived in Athens, GA for a year and got to experience an awesome music scene, but didn't know they originated there until after I moved. Seeing them do a "homestand" like concert (like DBT did, which I attended in 2014 and 2015 at 40 watt) would be cool.
Imagine being introduced to the B52s by Keith freaking Haring. You were truly blessed
Cindy at her best. A shy woman, yet she belts out the words. I love the awkward dancing, and her facial tensions. Truly amazing.
As a musician I've always liked playing shows barefoot. The feeling of the stage under my feet kinda grounded me there, I guess. Seeing Cindy doing the same thing here makes me feel less weird about doing it 😆
Bravery is sexy AF!

@@tomward9140 They are far from kids and definitely not innocent. When you lose the most valuable thing you ever laid your eyes on and someone else has it the trauma makes you revert back into your inner child because that's all you know for sure.. you. Some wise man wrote a book about a pearl diver to make it clear for folks😜. Carl Jung and my honky Freud made it pretty clear. It's a sad song that makes me want to get up and dance(if I could walk)I'm not sure why your sentences are so short but I agree. You can tell by the look in all their eyes they're putting their hearts into it. The human heart is so beautiful when it shines. I can't help but think of the insecurities Cindy had to fight and overcome up there, but yet she's one of the most beautiful ladies I've ever laid eye's on growing up. Clair is beautiful by all the public standards but I always swooned when I saw Cindy! Such strong spirits, all of them! Unique and unashamed! A huge part of my childhood!! I hope you get that sentence thing worked out. Remember, soap boxes are inherently slippery things to stand on if that's what that was about. Not really sure. Highest blessings! You have great taste in music!!
Cindy is an absolute goddess here! Or anywhere, for that matter! Most unassumingly sexy woman ever!
Cindy is just so gorgeous in this, what a wonderful vocal carrying such a great song.
Always liked the early days when she was brunette.
Saw them live in Seattle in the early 1980's. When they came out to the stage lights were low so those bouffant hairdos were impossible to miss. Cindy was so sexy singing "Give Me Back My Man" in her barefeet. Had a huge crush on her.
Yes, he looks great
The Best New Wave band ever , Their music keeps me young.
Can you imagine being that young - and just letting it rip like they did. Reckless Abandon!
Even though it was during the new wave era, B52’s have a distinct sound signature
And unmistakably American. @@Twica973
One band. Three of the most distinct vocalists in rock history.
I agree 100%
One of the first records I bought with my own money.
@TART 140 BPM Experimental a shoemaker at best.
Wait til you hear the drummer.
Fred is very distinctive in a Biz Markie kinda way
Ricky Wilson was an insanely creative guitar player who doesn't really get the credit he deserves. Ricky Wilson was awesome.
So true! In many ways it is he who created the groove.
I love Bouncing off the Satellites, its crazy, he was a genius
imagine dying because a gay dude with aids blew his wad into your asshole...ffs
I believe he got his signature sound by removing a couple of strings from his guitar!
@@scotmark Wow, Never knew that ! thank you
No one ever talks about Kate’s bass keyboard playing. She made this song with Ricky’s quirky guitar and Cindy’s amazing vocals. I’m still in love with Cindy after all these years! 😍🥰😘🤩
that's exactly what I was wondering? Is she playing the bass on the keyboard? 😁
@@bruno_py Yes. And despite there being *rumors* about Ricky playing bass and guitar at the same time, it's not true - he only ever played Guitar. Though one of his many guitar tunings was downtuned close to Baritone territory, he played no Bass notes.
I'm 66 now a everytime I watch Cindy sing this song I fall in with her all over again. Such an amazing sultry voice.
I've played this song like twelve times in a row She has me hypnotized.
join the club
Brilliant isn't it.
because you have the brain of a flea.
It is hypnotisting you... The illumianti makes all our pop music.
me too.
Absolutely one of the most innovative bands that nobody has ever tried to duplicate, because they know it can't be done! 😆🙋👌👍👏👏👏
Lots of people have tried. Fetchin Bones, SCOTS, Voice of the Beehive... thats just a few.
Check ouf a Japanese band called The Plastics. Were doing this same thing from about 77 to 83. The Japanese claim they were BEFORE the B52s. But it is true that David Byrne, of the Talking Heads, and the b52s helped The Plastics release two US albums in 1980 and 81. If you like the B52s you'll like them too.
@@darkwitnesslxx The Plastics formed in 1976, as did The B-52s, so they started at about the same time. But I don't think their guitar parts sound anywhere near the same. I'm not saying they're "bad," I can listen just fine, but they sound more like XTC's "Drums and Wires" album.
The point is that guitar parts in B-52s songs are usually far more minimalist, while having hints of some unusual chords on one guitar - chords that try appearing like they're 2 different guitars instead of 1, even though 3 of their early songs from the first 2 albums had 2 guitars. And I say that as a fan of both early B-52s songs, and XTC.
Kinda interesting that all 3 bands had officially formed in 1976.
Geezus, were we ever that young? It still hits me now, like it did then. Thanks for all the music and memories....
Dope song. Original. Can’t be questioned
this song is so hauntingly good! I'm literally obsessed with it right now, especially this video. Cindy Wilson is such a babe in this!
same here
This was so ahead of it's time - Just brilliant, even in 2022
They were just kids.
the lyrics.......how they changed them up was genius, you never knew what was next. So simple, but so complex.
ua-cam.com/video/bVXfkG7q_0s/v-deo.html
The first time that I heard it I thought it was a indie band from the 00s
Not ahead of time, just talent....that artists don't really have these days.
Ricky's guitar licks on this are just brilliant.
He could do no wrong, in my opinion. One of the baddest ever.
I’ve grown to absolutely love this band. They sounded like no one before them and no one who’s come after them could match them. I’ve always lovingly referred to The B-52s as the musical equivalent to a John Waters film: kitschy, retro, and 9,000% one of a kind.
Brilliant comment x
Aptly put!
It´s about the desire to regain a lost love. The lyrics describe a woman who misses her partner and would do anything to be together again, even offering gifts like fish, candy and everything she has in her hand. The woman feels dizzy from the situation and feels that if she does not recover her man soon, she will drown in her pain. The song is a mixture of nostalgia, desire, and desperation to recover a lost lover. Good song. Love it.
You are an idiot. 30 seconds of research would find that Cindy herself has said this song was about a girl who's boyfriend was eaten by a shark and comes to the beach each day to bargain with the shark. Take your pretentious bullshit elsewhere.
The song is about her singing to a shark to give her back her lover which the shark ate…
Is it me or is this absolutely mesmerising?
It's awesome
it is definitely not just you
but you DO have good taste >:)
Yes, it's a very hypnotic song. Her voice stirs something in me.
I was thinking compelling but mesmerizing is more accurate
I never really got into them, a song or there...but this is an amazing song.
Even after all these years since the band's beginning, their songs still sound great. Brilliant, creative musicians. A band like no other.
Started listening to then right from the start. First album as a teen in the 70's. Now at 61 I still can't get enough of them. By Far my all time favorite Band ! ❤
If it wasn’t for finding this band as a 7 year old learning to sing like them, I would have never been exposed to opera. Because of their comfortability sense with themselves, I gained the courage to get voice lessons, along with learning other instruments. I owe this band my musical curiosity and extended vocal timed length in order to sing many arias confidently. Also, learning about space junk. Thank You B-52’s 💋💋💋
Fred Schneider putting in work
She’s a frickn GODESS!
She reminds me of Susan Sarandon
Yes!!!! You beat me to it.
I prefer to think of her as an exceptionally talented and adorable musician.
@@Potandthekettle i can see it -
I'm so obsessed with Cindy.. Since the 80's.. this song always renews my love for her voice
I can’t get enough of this song and the charisma of the delivery.
How sad for Cindy, and all the band, when Ricky died. For Cindy, not only a bandmate, a big brother. I remember them well in this period, very few bands could come near to their talent, and they really struck a chord to us 'alternative' lot. There has always been a huge element of fun in their music, but Cindy really gets across heartbreak in this song. Their lyrics are spot-on
Her presence, the flat notes, the counterintuitive pitch changes - that beat, dude vibing over there like snoopy. One thing that's clear, it is one cool scene and I want more of it.
This is by far their best song. Cindy's singing immortalizes it.
this one and Topaz as well !
Totally agree brilliant
It expresses the emotions of a teen-age girl perfectly.
Pizdamate
I love- “Dance this mess Around”. It’s right up there with this one!
If this is their best song, that's really not a good sign at all.
The rest of us can only dream of being this cool. :). All hail, The B52s.
those who dream of being cool always end up like this

Meaning?
Where has the time gone? God, they are so young there. Had never seen this one before. Awesome. Love it.
I lost my husband a little over a year ago and I love this song.
Cindy is such a cutie! She can pass for Agent 99 in Get Smart. Love how Kate moves playing the synthesizer.
You pegged her for Agent 99 !! Never thought of that until now !! Dead ringer !
Cindy Wilson meets Barbara Feldon ?!? That would be a meeting of the minds!!!
She is a world class cutie! So is Kate. These two have so much talent that if they ever got too close to each other they would reach critical mass and cause an atomic explosion.
I love that pout Cindy has on and how she breaks into dance.
I never get tired of this song! Dance moves❤️💃👍
One of their best. And this is a band that has a lot of great songs. You don't hear this one so often anymore which is a shame.
That does it, I'm taking up the tambourine.
Screw the stones ,im watching this 2 girls ,verses 4 ugly memfers, back in 1980!
Ha! Fred is like Mr. Superfluous in this number
That does it! I'm growing a 'porn-stache'', again.
I'm pretty good at rhythm tambourine and the odd solo, but I'd love to play lead... Practice, practice, practice. I'm getting an electric tambourine so I can play anytime without disturbing the neighbors.
nice 1
Why is it that I just realize now how advanced musically and innovative the B-52's were? I was a fan in the 80's and got into their party fun and campiness but seemed to have overlooked the real musicality. They are brilliant! Even today, their music is so fresh. Also, I want to go back in time and marry Cindy Wilson and then I would be more than happy to grow old with her.
yeah I would go across time for her too!
They listened to a lot of Nino Rota and different kinds of music, and it influenced them.
I want Kate.
A good friend of mine recently told me the album Cosmic Thing was one of his favorite albums of all time. I couldn’t believe it so I decided to give it a listen for myself. He wasn’t wrong! I’m so grateful for his introduction to this awesome band. This is one of my favorite songs from them that I never would have heard if it wasn’t for his recommendation. The point is - listen to music your friends recommend!

I love watching Cindy dancing. It mixes with the rhythm of the previous generation. It's Rock.
The memories this brings back are powerful. 40 years out it is still amazing.
Wow, these B'52 performances never cease to deliver on originality and how well they have stood up over time!! The 1980's would not have been the same without them - don't miss an opportunity to see them live!!!
first time I saw them was on "Saturday night live ",... doing "Rock lobster" and "Private Idaho" think it was 1978 ? they are nothing but fun wild sexy all that and more ...The B 52s have never failed to make me smile.
That verse @1:00 THAT LOOK THOSE EYES and the little SMILE

She's so sweet. She's so nice to look at. And the clip is excellent.
This song is awesome…
This is as close to perfect as you'd want to get
I thought the same thing.
I love so many things about this. Especially at the end when she is like “F it, I’m done lip syncing...I’m just gonna dance”
I give the biggest props to bands that have their own unique sound unlike any others out there. B-52's definitely get big props from me. Their music and their lyrics.....weird but so cool and catchy!
I've always been amazed how similar Cindy and Kate's voices are. They sound like vocal twins.
They definitely can harmonize like noone else.
Well said - they are sublime.
Exacto igualitas 👏👏👏👏lindas voces
I thought Kate did the secondary parts at the end; I'm sure that was the case at their concert at the Capitol Theater in Passaic. But in this video she doesn't they just dub in the other parts.
@@wjmascitello- Same thought about Kate, who in her own rights, can belt it out with the best of them. Throw these two together, and it’s just so fantastic.
watching this video over and over again has given me a greater appreciation for , not just this band, but music in general. one of my all time fav song and video!
Wow!!! I’m buying classic B-52s & New Order next month!!!
oh my god Cindy looks incredible in this. I wish this look became "hip" again. And the song is awesome too.

Did you ever ever think, when you first heard this song, you'd be listening to it 40 years later, during a pandemic? And your in your 60's???
Life is strange.
Rock Lobster x
I used to DJ at clubs and parties in the early 80s, and this song was an underground smash hit in all of the cool/progressive night clubs all over America.
40 odd years on and I'm still dancing along...
Along but not alone
all the last notes of the verses are carried till the next line. i don't think I can remember a song with this device. it's taking a convention to its absurd extreme, I love it, it's what the mid 70's-early 80's were all about.
square1971
It's certainly not an easy song to sing with all the sustained notes and that's what makes Cindy so unique. I'm just blown away by Cindy and Kate's vocals in this band. They are truly special. 💕
I watch it over and over. Cindy at her best ❤️❤️❤️
When your band is so good that you can afford to sideline Fred Schneider for entire songs...

Ambos grupos son de la misma ciudad !!

So rad. Such a cool band. Ricky's surf guitar licks are pretty cool too.
Heard this before but never seen the vid. Cindy on lead vocals. Every member of this band was so talented individually , no wonder the B52s were so great.
Yeah I was a B-52s fan through the 80s and into the 90s like a lot of people, but more into REM and “serious” stuff. It’s now I’m almost 50 I watch these videos and realize how talented they were, like the girls both played keyboards and guitar, Keith played guitar, bass, drums, Ricky of course was a great guitar player, and even Fred played keyboards early on. Whatever fit right for the song. And the three-part harmony is great but Cindy and Kate both have amazingly emotive voices that can easily sing lead. Amazing band, glad I am getting into them all over again.
Such an infectious groove.
WOW! The B-52's were so cool in the early and mid 80s. This is undoubtedly one of the best New Wave songs ever.
Thank you for posting!

I've always loved the B52's unique sound
This is Cindy's song & my favorite of theirs. It's remarkable how they keep that perfect neutral distance which supports her expressions and vocals.
They are all still cool, they can do no wrong.
I completely agree with you, Trey!
I love this song, I think Cindy’s voice is so raw and vulnerable. It’s really awesome
Cindy rocks!
80s decade had just simple the BEST things ...never to be matched again....
sad to say.....
Yes. We are now stuck in the 3rd decade of the 90's! AAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
Not so the BEST things... but the music IS THE best....
But remember how we said the 80s sucked so bad when we were in the 80s?
Wasn't this first released in the 70s?
My goodness. Memories. The sexiest voice of the eighties. That girl is out of this world, so pretty, sexy, mysterious, fun, stylish, like a dream. These electronic clapping sounds gave me such a kick when I played the record on my parents stereo equipment as loud as possible after school. Cindy on bare feet on stage is the essence of erotics. Epic band, epic sound that I will never forget. Thank you B-52's!

Since the vocals are multi-tracked, I have to assume that Cindy is lip syncing--all while
providing a master class in how to deliver a song. Amazing.
Yes they are all miming, was normal for tv performances back then like top of the pops etc...
Or loop station, although I agree probably at this time miming.
This is obviously miming to the album track, which is all Cindy on vocals. Like many bands have done, they seem to making fun of the whole miming thing by being ridiculous and eccentric, and I think her choice to mime the additional vocal part is all part of this. Bands are required to mime on a lot of shows, and this is their way of saying "Yeah, this is silly but we know it."
Most performances on TOTP were synced
cindy is so beautiful
SHE was naturally pretty, and later went with the silly hairdo's
and bln hair, and heavy eye makeup , and she didnt need any of that.
