I'm 60 now and remember this song when it came out. I know why many cry when hearing this. It's a part of us remembering when we were young and life was much more simple then without a care in the world. And listening to this captures those memories and feelings because we live them. Many we knew back then are gone now. So I'm grateful to have those experiences. Because in the end the only thing we take with us when we leave this world is what is inside. Our experience as soul. Thanks for the post!
Absolutely agree... Listening to these songs from the '80's is both uplifting and sad at the same time. It's difficult to put the emotion I feel listening to music from my youth into words and when you try, some people don't understand. I guess the journey and what brings us back is very different for everyone!
I agree totally with you. I’m 55 myself and this song really takes me back to simpler times. I am glad I lived through those days when we communicated like humans with our friends and didn’t give a second thought about what we wore, what we listened to and which bands we went and saw. Good times that will live forever in my heart.
Yes. I just saw them two days ago in Washington D.C., on their farewell tour and they performed this, among their other great classics and it was so nostalgic. I really love these guys and actually hate saying farewell.
I was 17 when this came out and pretty new to The B-52s. This song hit my soul in a way I can’t even explain. I knew instantly that this song was special. It’s summer 2020, I’m now 48 and still feeling the magic.
Good lord, those two girls could melt you into the ground. What an amazing mark this group of musicians has left on so many of us. Cosmic Thing is an album I’ll never stop listening to.
This never fails to bring tears. So sweetly melancholy and hauntingly beautiful. The music, the girl's melody and Fred's counterpoint all blend to perfection. Now I'm going to sit and play this again and remember long gone friends.
The 80's. No internet. No social media like Facebook, youtube, instagram, twitter, tiktok, etc. No smartphones. But people were enjoying and having the time of their lives!
You have a valid point there. It can really be lonely especially for someone who is an introvert and not a social butterfly. Unlike today, you can spend the whole day in the internet alone to kill your boredom without even noticing the time.
I had no idea they WEREN'T in the Hall; I had just always assumed they were in it and I just hadn't heard about it yet or something. The B-52's were one of the premiere New Wave bands who went on to create a body of work that included several jems, including Deadbeat Club. The melodies, harmonies, the colors in the music, the purity, the texture, the polish - it's perfection... or damn near.
The best moments are the ones you don't realize you'll have nostalgic feelings for. And they can be something as simple as being asleep in the back seat of the car driving from Maryland to Maine lightly hearing this song playing over the car speakers and my dad humming along.

This entire album is gold. One of their best. Got me through some tough times. Another gem, and the girl's voices are amazing. Can't wait to see them in November!
They all look very beautiful in his video! Keith looks like a classic Hollywood movie heartthrob, Kate is scorching HOT, Cindy, oh Cindy looks like a dreamgirl as always, and Fred is so fierce! I just wish Ricky was here though.
Im 61, and from highschool was a fan, when i was a senior, i transferred to South Sumter Highschool, so i could stay with my Grandad (Gran had a bad stroke, and we didn't want him by himself all the time) so there i was, with my weird clothes and my wierd 80s hair, in Bushnell, Florida. A town where the guys had those "rings" in their back pockets from cans of 'dip,' rifles in their trucks, alone, and bored. One night i was walking around the silent town, and got in a phone booth to call Grandad for a ride home. Just as i was about to call, a friendly acquaintance, Randy Norman, (Randy! Are you out there?) drove up in his yellow Pinto, and was blaring "Rock Lobster" from two giant (home) speakers in his back seat! I was saved, and had no idea he liked that stuff! Thanks again for the life preserver, i hope youre out there, well and happy! A few days later i found out he was a hell of a guitar player, we went into a music store, he picked up a red Stratocaster, plugged it in and played a near perfect "my best friends girlfriend" by the cars. This all happened in 1981
@@HRodz-eipxthanks! I had more or less forgotten it, but Bushnell Florida was like a 'Mayberry,' and went silent after 8 p.m! There was the prerequisite Dairy Queen where people hung out, and this game room, where I'd sit and people watch, but the 'locals' would play Molly Hatchet, ACDC, etc, and before I transferred there I was already waist deep in alternative subculture and music! So yeah, Randy and I became friends, and I had some relief!
@@HRodz-eipx My wife says the same thing, and I appreciate it, but I always doubt many people would care? Or "I was with the 5th Marines at the reservoir" etc.. you get the idea, carrier pilots, tankers, now THOSE are stories! Exactly... Outnumbered. Dead Beats are easily spotted, because they're treated conventionally & enjoy the Company of others regularly... Love ❤ this Band
💗 Kate! Kate and Cindy! Honestly these two amazing ladies were like role models to me as a young girl who didn’t look to the mainstream for inspiration. I love their spirit and I love The B-52s so much.
So much creativity coming out from that part of the world- B52's.. 10,000 Maniacs.. REM (M. Stipe @ 1:22).. What a wonderful time to be alive and have this music!
Fred looks so beautiful here when glammed up! I wasn't a fan for a couple of decades and couldn't stand them! I mean...they were not and are not Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, or Guns N' Roses! Not even Michael Jackson! But you know what they ARE?! WONDERFUL! I love and adore them!
This is the album that really made me a fan. This album kicked their careers up into a whole new stage and earned them a whole new generation of fans. What brilliantly inspired, super fun music. What an original sound. I saw them live circa 2007 and they rocked so hard! Keith Strickland might just be the hardest working man in rock 'n' roll. And with all the weird tunings and an endless collection of Telecasters, Keith's guitar tech is the hardest working guitar tech in the biz.
For me….. this song is….. playing in my cassette player in my 1984 Jeep CJ7….. on my way to wrightsville beach, NC to go surfing. Just 19-20 years old without a care in the world. This great song takes me back to this amazing…. Simple times.
These guys shaped my whole life with their beliefs and ideologies Man how lucky have we been More power to you Kate Cindy and Fred Forever in my heart xxx
This song really takes me back to those summer nights of my youth. It mixes beautiful harmonies and a great bass line and that quirky B 52 way with a song. I think that I need to dance in torn sheets in the rain before my pilot light goes out!!!
Absolutely their best song! Tells a great story many young people can relate to. I was 23 years old when this song came out. Still puts a smile on my face. Very nostalgic.
@@d.brooks2035 Any idea who the brunette in the black skirt/hose/heels with white pearls was? Perfect example of what you'd see in the club scene in the '80's. Man I miss those days!
Avevo 16 anni, era il 1980, quando scoprii i B-52's. In italia non hanno mai avuto un grande seguito. Ancora oggi li ascolto come allora. Grazie per la splendida musica che ci avete regalato!
Deadbeat Club lifted me up every time when I was sad and feeling misunderstood in 1990. Now in 2019 I'm no more misunderstood since I found my voice and I am forever in their debt. Still makes me happy and sad.
Saw the group in the summer of 1990. The world was at peace, the Cold War was over. I was in college with a bunch of friends and we partied a lot without a care in the world and me and Mary C went to this show, with Ziggy Marley as the opening act. RIP Mary.
This is a true masterpiece! B-52's are SO WEIRD, and I love it! Be sure to watch "the Adventures of Pete & Pete" where Kate and Michael Stype have cameos! That show had so many music legends in it that kids had no idea who they were! Iggy Pop, Gordon Gano...
I didn't know that. Only discovered that show a year or so ago because of the theme tune, which kind of reminds me of the Replacements a tiny bit even though it's not. I'll have to check out some eps. Thanks!
Instantly takes me back to the summer of 89' . . . we were young, free, running wild in the night, sleeping all day, with not a care in the world . . .
Takes me back to 1990, when I started my nurse training. Living in a nurses home in an old psychiatric hospital in North London. Hardly any money but the time of my life. Happy days
This was the first album I bought! It was 1979 and I was 8 yrs old. Listened over and over! Still have it! I'll have to have a listen after all these years.
I grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee..just up the street from iconic/idyllic/amazing town of Athens, Georgia ❤.. been in Florida 30+ years now..and the B-52s come to Orlando often..great and cool people ever!! they're never sad ever!! deep south baby ❤❤❤❤❤🌞🌴😎 were all the deadbeat club now
Cindy Wilson dancing just warms my heart. Especially when she frugs. Can't tell you why. I lack the words. It just makes me happy. She is going for it. Love it. Love watching her go for it.
I discovered this album the summer when I was 13, a NYC kid who never felt like I “fit in” to any conventional group. This song spoke to me and still does. The memories it brings back, the feelings I get when I hear this song… I can’t help but be sentimental about it, and so grateful. 🥹❤️🎶
Yes, that's Ricky. Keith submitted that photo to an article that was written about the first LGBT themed dance that ever happened on the University of Georgia campus, back in the early 70's.
The sound of Kate's and Cindy's voices together is one of the most beautiful sounds in the universe. Tears in my eyes.
These girls born to sing together ...
You can see/hear where Voice of the Beehive got their sound from ..
TRUE!!!

Bush was president. I didn't think we could go lower. The Deadbeat Club are grownups now. Time to get serious.
@@bongodave13 Lol you think that is lower. Wait until you hear about Trump.
The whole album! I bought it when it was released, aged 9. I think of it as a masterpiece and I feel joy every time I listen. It's perfect.
If I'm coming to the end of life's journey I could do worse than listen to this to send me on my way.......This is the definition of 'feel good'.
Yeah sorry we lost him!
Yeah I know, me too!
Me too!
I miss him too!
I feel like Ricky never really left them. His spirit is so pervasive throughout this song.
This all happened in 1981
That's a great memory.
@@John-l8m Those are wonderful recollections. You might want to consider turning these stories into a book or a play. Or both.
@@HRodz-eipx My wife says the same thing, and I appreciate it, but I always doubt many people would care? And, I've been a Barber for 33 years, and when I started, it was me, 27, and three barbers who were all three WW II' Veterans. Those Vets were all 63, thru 67 then, and the shop was popular. I was an armchair war historian, and the customers would see my books and say "Oh! I was in the artillery on Corregidor!" Or "I was with the 5th Marines at the reservoir" etc.. you get the idea, carrier pilots, tankers, now THOSE are stories! Sorry for babbling, I'm about to open my shop for the day, and I'm all coffeed up! John The Barber Naples
Love the Stipe cameos. A great time to be in Athens! Those were the days.
There is no other video that I wanted to be more a part of than this montage....they will eternally be classy, retro and young....I guess you just had to be one of those golden people at the right place at the right time....
Kate & Cindy - love their harmonies
Exactly... Outnumbered. Dead Beats are easily spotted, because they're treated conventionally & enjoy the Company of others regularly... Love ❤ this Band
This might just be the coolest pop song I ever heard, by the coolest band. Pure gold. 💖
💗 Kate! Kate and Cindy!
Honestly these two amazing ladies were like role models to me as a young girl who didn’t look to the mainstream for inspiration. I love their spirit and I love The B-52s so much.
C*60s yo, me too! I wanted to be Cindy
These guys shaped my whole life with their beliefs and ideologies
Man how lucky have we been
More power to you Kate Cindy and Fred
Forever in my heart xxx
one of the most underappreciated bands ever!
I just love the harmony. That is why they are in a league of their own.
名曲はいつまでも名曲です。b-52s、これからもずっと好きです。
This is quality nostalgia. B-52s are underrated, much more than just Love Shack
This song really takes me back to those summer nights of my youth. It mixes beautiful harmonies and a
great bass line and that quirky B 52 way with a song. I think that I need to dance in torn sheets in the rain
before my pilot light goes out!!!
Absolutely their best song! Tells a great story many young people can relate to. I was 23 years old when this song came out. Still puts a smile on my face. Very nostalgic.
I met Kate when she was in Athens filming this video...circa February or March 1990. Good times.
A friend and classmate of mine is in this, he was in a band that was playing with them and REM, did you see Michael Stipe in this too?
@@d.brooks2035 Any idea who the brunette in the black skirt/hose/heels with white pearls was? Perfect example of what you'd see in the club scene in the '80's. Man I miss those days!
Avevo 16 anni, era il 1980, quando scoprii i B-52's. In italia non hanno mai avuto un grande seguito. Ancora oggi li ascolto come allora. Grazie per la splendida musica che ci avete regalato!
1982. Small club in Honolulu. They played for about three hours with a few breaks. Maybe 40 people max in that place. Fantastic!
RIP Mary.
I grow up with‘em and they never disappoint and always show a beautiful ❤️
Such a fun song! The harmonies and Fred's fab, laconic chorus vocals. A band at the top of their game!
It's amazing how good their music sounds on some good vintage stereo gear.
The B-52s LOVE
This is a true masterpiece! B-52's are SO WEIRD, and I love it! Be sure to watch "the Adventures of Pete & Pete" where Kate and Michael Stype have cameos! That show had so many music legends in it that kids had no idea who they were! Iggy Pop, Gordon Gano...
I didn't know that. Only discovered that show a year or so ago because of the theme tune, which kind of reminds me of the Replacements a tiny bit even though it's not. I'll have to check out some eps. Thanks!
The last vinyl album I bought. What a way to end the 80s.
Instantly takes me back to the summer of 89' . . . we were young, free, running wild in the night, sleeping all day, with not a care in the world . . .
I had a drug addiction then. Thanks for reminding.
We all need memories bro, good and bad 👍
I was 21 years old in new york in 1989, going to Slayer and Metallica shows, but now I'm old and I find these guys nostalgic.
Um, I had two jobs, many cares and never slept in the day. You sound like a lay-a-bout.
Takes me back to 1990, when I started my nurse training. Living in a nurses home in an old psychiatric hospital in North London. Hardly any money but the time of my life. Happy days
If only being young could have lasted longer.................
Yes!
I can't deal with Keith's handsomeness, gosh. He's so perfect.
@@ziweiyuan is that Ricky beside him? What am amazing pic, where did it come from?
Yes, that's Ricky. Keith submitted that photo to an article that was written about the first LGBT themed dance that ever happened on the University of Georgia campus, back in the early 70's.
@@ziweiyuan Which photo?
@@blackmore4 The link in my post.
@@ziweiyuan For some reason, I can't see any link. Could you send it again in this thread?
I think it's pretty much impossible to be sad when listening to the B-52s.
Unless it's Topaz or Follow Your Bliss!😂
@Trista Fravel Good Point! That was devastating!😭 I would feel the same!
Actually, for me, this is one of the saddest songs I know. But it’s also one of my favorites. 🥂
Bring me back my man
I thought so too until someone posted a comment about Ricky. Damn, that made me cry.
Cindy and Kate have such lovely voices.
My dad would play this album all the time on family road trips through the America in the 90s in our van ❤. R.E.M. and B5'2 on repeat.
Синди Уилсон молодец!!!! Рыдаю от счастья!!! Бывший автовор из. Ростова папы!!! 😊😊😊 Всем добра!!!
