      A lot of the demands of the strikers are better pay and working condition for smalltime actors, including such things as studios having to actually say whether a role has been filled or not(because studios would often keep auditions open despite filling the role just so they can get a bunch of info on more actors while wasting their time)

    • @VulpesHilarianus
      @VulpesHilarianus Рік тому +27

      There are a bunch of actors who were mainliners in TV and movies in the '90s and 2000s that are now or for years were doing basic labour like landscaping and hospital coding. Sometimes once the show ends, the cast is typecast or considered toxic because the studios think the actors are too tightly intertwined with the identity of the show, meaning the actors never get work again (or at least don't get any for about a decade). The guy who played Harvey in Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Nate Richert, and the Brino brothers who played Sam and David and 7th Heaven are two good examples of that. The Brino brothers even got screwed out of royalties for legacy media sales of the show along with everyone else due to the CW consolidation and thus "renegotiation" of their contract with CBS.
      Unless you're someone like Jennifer Aniston or Jim Parsons and carry the entire network on your show's back you're not making a lot of money long term. In fact sometimes the contracts are written so that you're paid in a way that puts you in a higher tax bracket and thus pay more taxes, but get less take home pay (like your contract being in nine month increments because that's how long a season takes to air, meaning if your show lasts beyond the first season you get paid twice in the first year and then shafted in the second). That's actually a big reason that SAG joined the current strike and aligned themselves with the '07 strike.

    The worst part of the Anchor Brewing Co. case is that the workers offered to buy the brewery but Sapporo Breweries did not give them the time to do so. • @benevolentworldexploder5395
      @benevolentworldexploder5395 Рік тому +35

      It was. According to the city law the first time offense is $250, no matter how many trees are included. I guess the take away is if you are planning on tree murder then you might as well make the most of it. It sucks, because I get why the first offense is so low. Like the logic is probably if someone doesn't realize that it is illegal then it's a fine that doesn't punish your lack of knowledge, but they clearly took advantage of this and the law should have leeway in redefining this incident since the motive was clearly antagonistic.

    • @deeznoots6241
      @deeznoots6241 Рік тому +27

      Actually it was just for the trimming. We're essentially at the stage where the victim is in hospital and we're waiting to see if it's an assault or murder charge. If the trees end up dying (which we won't know until the fall), it's replacement + one other tree.

      @@deeznoots6241 my other favourite recent bee debunk is a bit more abstract but amazing. Older literature assumes bees to have some sophisticated means we don’t understand to avoid flying into each other at the entrance to the hive. The increase in accessibility of high speed photography had modern researchers think maybe they could learn more about this. Turns out bees fly into each other all the time. They’ve even identified a particular buzz unique to just after a mid air collision. It’s unscientific to anthropomorphise - but also lots of fun - so I imagine the air filled with the buzzing of “whoops, sorry” “Scuse me” “mind how you go now”

    Huge fan of November. First class of Soviet nuclear submarines. For the first decade of them in service it was assumed they were probably similar but slightly inferior to the first US nuclear submarine in performance, I.E. could probably hit around ~25 knots in an emergency. Then in the late 60s one of them trashed the USS Enterprise in a drag race all the way up to 31 knots. Which made the navy shit itself so hard it made the Mk48 and the Los Angeles class

    • @forcea1454
      @forcea1454 Рік тому

      The Mk 48 was a response to the Alfa-class.
      The Los Angeles was, however a response to the Novembers, and was originally intended to be a fleet support submarine, with another design called CONFORM intended to perform other SSN tasks. Rickover killed CONFORM because the Los Angeles (and it's reactor, an adapted D2G for submarine use) was his pet project, in spite of CONFORM being a potentially superior design (deeper diving, more advanced sonars and almost as fast).

    • @thegenericguy8309
      @thegenericguy8309 Рік тому

      @@forcea1454 Mk48 ADCAP was developed in response to Alfa. Base model entered service to combat 'current' Soviet submarine threats when 'current' meant Victor I and November, it was only a year after the first Alfa and you can't design the Mk48 from scratch in a year.
      While Rickover was a huge asshole and CONFORM was killed for stupid reasons, I'm unconvinced in retrospect CONFORM would have been better, mainly because of the record of the Alfa. Generally speaking, SSNs are better when they're larger, although obviously you can't just keep making them bigger forever and keep getting benefits. A small, highly advanced, deep diving, fast, and heavily automated submarine was exactly what the Alfa was supposed to be, and to its credit it was very successful, with a genuinely remarkably advanced set of features for its time (fully automated target identification, tracking, and engagement, and fully automated torpedo room, among other things). But it was too expensive, too fragile, and generally just had more tradeoffs than it was worth. The Soviets went on to make Sierra and Akula, which used much of the tech from the Alfa but refocused development on making a large, robust, and quiet platform, and they were spectacularly successful. And what the Sierra and Akula were to the Alfa, it's always to me felt like the LA and Virginia were to the CONFORM.
      While Rickover was in the wrong in his actions and in general, in hindsight I think we blundered into a better submarine somehow at his behest

    • @forcea1454
      @forcea1454 Рік тому

      @@thegenericguy8309 CONFORM was going to be between the size of a Sturgeon and Narwhal, not as small as an Alfa.
      Virginia isn't really comparable to the Sierra or Akula, it's essentially a post-Cold War design intended to maintain the submarine manufacturing base (not a bad idea, considering the problems Britain went through with Astute), making use of certain COTS components for the combat system and sonars.
      Los Angeles came along at the right time to be produced in large numbers, there were a other more capable alternatives like CONFORM in the late 1960s, or the APHNAS SSGN design and 1975 Advanced SSN design.
      I do generally share your opinion about larger SSNs being better, it's just that Los Angeles was probably overly technically conservative, and made a number of sacrifices compared to earlier SSN designs (most notably SUBROC, minelaying capability and most importantly if all for the Cold War, ELINT), and the deletion of the X-stern early on in the design process increased the likelihood of snap-roll.

    Angers mentioned! It's pronounced an-jey but angers is funnier. That's where my dad grew up so I too experienced the frequent Dad fun fact, although from researching it now, France did prohibit soldiers from marching over bridges and the lieutenant-colonel leading the troops claims he commanded them to be at ease before crossing the bridge, so the failure may have had a different cause. I'm just looking at the wikipedia article here, but what it says is that it happened during a storm and as the bridge was swaying due to strong winds, the soldiers' efforts to keep balance by moving left and right along the swinging deck contributed to the stress and the rusty anchoring cables failed, dumping most of the troops into the river. I can't find the exact measurements of the old bridge, but the new one sits at about the same level and it's a 160 feet drop, it was during a terrible storm and reportedly many of the victims fell onto their bayonets or that of their comrades, all of which contributed to the huge difference in death toll.
