If I may be resident rocket safety knowledge guy: the flame diverter is in fact one of TWO very important safety things Elon just decided “yeah we don’t need this”, the other being a sound suppression system (which is just a bunch of water jets) to prevent the sonic boom from the exhaust from damaging the rocket or pad. At least 3 engines on this thing failed on liftoff because they just didn’t bother to install incredibly basic safety features.

So I live right beside where this bridge ends in St Pete. An interesting supernatural note:
Some parts of the original bridge were left intact to serve as fishing piers which are still in use today. They say that if you go out on the fishing piers in the early morning on a foggy day, you may, around 8 o'clock, see the ghost of the Greyhound bus falling through the fog toward the water. People who report seeing the passengers in the bus say that all of them are screaming/clearly in their final terrified moments, except for one elderly woman who waves and smiles a toothless grin at whoever is unfortunate enough witness this sight.

We need to band together and build Rocz a full scale flight sim cockpit except for podcasting. He has to sit down in the chair, close the door so his cats can't get in, and put on a headset. 3 switches with the flip covers to enable 3 redundant power supplies, flip switches that turn on zencaster and audition. A big red button on the centre console to arm the nu-I mean start the recording. The main flight column controls the slides by moving left or right, and we replace the hat on the joystick with a ThinkPad nipple so he can John Madden. There's a stick shaker that activates if he has less than 200GB of available disk space. The oxygen mask is hooked up to a supply of Kentucky Whiskey, and he has a small bathroom like the Su-34 kitchen that he can get up and go into.

I worked as an electrician on the construction of the new bridge after the accident. The new bridge is constructed of precast hollow sections that are cable tensioned together. When the final two sections were raised and tensioned to specification they failed to meet by almost six inches. The whole project went on hiatus while the engineers went back to their calculations to determine what was wrong. After around a month of work stoppage the engineers came back with their brilliant solution. This was to simply keep increasing the cable tension until the sections met. We were assured that this was perfectly safe as the cables had an excess load capacity of 200%. So we did as we were told and successfully mated the sections. The issue being that we used up more than half of the cable's theoretical "excess" load capacity to do so. I never have liked driving across that bridge . . .

It's surprisingly hard to actually slip on a banana peel. My brother and I were thinking about that concept when we were kids so we ate a bunch of bananas, threw the peels on the kitchen floor, and attempted to slip on them. The banana peels actually had a surprising amount of traction so maybe they have to be well into the process of rotting or something or maybe it's just an urban legend that you can slip on them. We decided the best way to slip on the kitchen floor was either to just wear socks in there or to spray cooking spray on the floor. Otherwise, that floor isn't very slippery.

6:00 as a big fan of the starship project (the engineering and the people who designed it, not elon) but two other thing to mention is that the flight termination system (the self destruct system) took around 50 seconds to actually destroy the rocket after it was fired (the FAA does not like this, neither do I), I believe the reason for this was that all it really did was poke a hole in the fuel tank and hope that was enough (other rockets have a big bomb between the fuel and oxidizer tanks, I dont know why they didnt do this, its not hard). The other thing was that not only did they not have a flame diverter (like every other launch site), they also didnt have a water deluge system, which is basically this mega sprinkler that cools the exhaust (to protect the flame diverter) and dampens the sound of the rocket since rockets are so loud they can damage themselves from the reflected engine noise.
as a small sidenote: the exhaust velocity of the Raptor 2 engines (the 33 engines that starship/superheavy uses) is around 3400m/s, or mach 9.9 which should tell you everything you need to know about how destructive rocket exhaust can be

Have to stop on the (not kidding) 5 ft wode shoulder. Cars flying past me at 60 mph blaring their horns at me, its windy as hell and dark, its raining, and I have to lean against the like 3 ft tall side wall of the bridge to fix my tire while looking hundreds of feet down to what was likely my certain doom on a bridge already known for suicides. as far as I know, the big bridge always being painted urban legend is one of those things that used to be true, but is not anymore. Originally these large bridges needed to painted continually, but with the invention of better paints, the paint would be more durable and the bridges needed to be painted less often, so starting at the beginning as soon as you were done at the end was no longer needed.

Quick note about the Forth Rail Bridge at 35:24 - The "urban legend" about the idea that the Forth Bridge is always being painted WAS true Until 2011; There was almost always a maintainance team who did start at one at end of the bridge, and paint until they got to the other end - This is mostly true, in that the repaint program did function in this way, but maintainance teams repainted critical areas as and when required. This, however, all stopped in 2011 as for the first time, the maintainance team switch to using an glass flake epoxy coating, which will last at least 25 years. There is still a Maintainance team that care for the bridge and who work closely with Network Rail Scotland for Railway maintainance. The maintainance team can now switch fofcus to other important things; In the next year, a new visitor center will open and you will be able to go to the top of the bridge for paid excursions. If Rosz and Liam do visit Alice here in Scotland, I will endevour my utmost to get Rosz to the top, with Liam's help, of course.

Not only that, but about 20 years ago, the State of Indiana sold it to some foreign idiots who managed to go bankrupt while basically owning a money printer, and now an Australian company owns it. Which means that, since Australia has been infected with globalism and is now dead to the living, the road has signs that display globalist babysitting, like "don't drink and drive", "use your seatbelt", and other things your cat knows, for fuxake. On rare occasions, they display actual information, like "construction ahead". So now, since they bought the road, it has to be paid for again. They'll probably pull the same shit with your bridge, just like here with the Chicago Skyway and all the toll roads in Illinois.

I used to drive over the replacement to this bridge on my commute! It was a fun bridge to drive over in my opinion, but also at the same time it was incredibly terrifying and exhausting, because I was suicidal at the time. Turns out if you are suicidal while driving on that particular bridge, the length and speed and narrowness and height and curves make it IMPOSSIBLE to not be constantly aware of how easy it would be to go through a barrier and die on contact with the ocean by not steering in the correct direction for a quarter of a second.
Listening to this episode now, years later, makes me remember that bridge fondly and also really appreciate not being suicidal anymore.
