      A white elderly military veteran was shot a year or so ago after he called the police when his house was broken into he had hearing aids and didn't hear the commands to drop his weapon.
      It had nothing to do with the color of his skin. Unfortunately we live in a dangerous world and sometimes horrific accidents happen.

      If the Tobacco companies did that 60 years ago, there would be a lot less regulation on tobacco products today.
      But by covering up the data and research on how bad smoking was, they sealed their fate to be regulated out of existence.
      I don't think that JUUL are the bad guys, but I also think that it was more public pressure against them than actually doing the right thing.
      Still, glad to see recovering smokers won't lose their options to help quit.

    We would have college kids buy us beer back in high school, or our friends older brother, and his girlfriend, everyone has a “beer guy” “weed guy” , people’s obsession with policy changes and laws, they do nothing, you can do whatever you want to do to make you feel better. We all know the truth deep down, if parents are worried, talk to your kids, create a safe environment in which they can discuss there feelings/curiosity, and let them make the decisions in there life. Be the best parent you can be, children although young, are individuals.

  • @maccarta
    @maccarta 5 років тому +224

    The flavor ban won't do anything to stop kids from smoking, and it's irritating. I smoked (cigarettes) throughout high school, mostly because all my friends smoked. None of us smoked because 'yey tasty mint!, we're such kids, only liking sweet stuffs lol". We smoked because it made us feel rebellious, independent and grown up. It doesn't make much sense in retrospect but it's the truth. I had a menthol phase, but I would have smoked exactly the same amount without it being available.
    Regulations have to take into account the mentality behind young people smoking. The flavor situation might impact middle schoolers, but not teenagers. Adults seems to forget what the difference between being 9 and being 15 is.

    I grew up in a house where my mother smoked. By the influence of the media and my older brother I regularly questioned that decision and implied that it was a selfish choice that would shorten her lifespan. When I came of age I bought a pack of cigarettes and found out what a nicotine buzz was. I occasionally had a cigarette thereafter but for the most part left it by the wayside. 2 years later my uncle died very unexpectedly from an operation where the prognosis is generally favorable. He passed away and instead of dealing with my emotions about it I started smoking more regularly to calm my anxiousness about it. Before I knew it, I was addicted to nicotine and was a regular smoker. My parents found several packs of cigarettes on me and eventually confronted me asking me to please just be up front about whether or not I was a smoker. Given my parents understanding nature I knew it was best to admit that I had taken up smoking so I did. I now have been smoking for over 10 years of my life and it was without a doubt the worst decision I've made in my life. Even if the nicotine buzz is slightly intriguing at first it doesn't make up for how the habit makes you feel in the long run... I wish to God I had ever taken up the habit in the first place. Learn from those who come before:the initial satisfying of your curiosity is not worth the long term effects of this product. It is a seductive mistress that will only do you harm and bring shame in the long term. Addiction is the most subtle temptress you will come across and it is nearly impossible to identify as it wraps around your life. Please trying to steer clear of anything that can grab a hold of your independence.

      @maccarta 5 років тому +1

      Do people around you smoke? I smoked for about 8 years (starting at 15...) and found that it was both a stress relief and that a lot of my social interactions were with other smokers. We did "smoke breaks" often together. It was very difficult to unlink these concepts in my brain, and it only worked when I replaced the stress relief with coffee, and when I accidentally had to not see my smoker friends for a longer time (almost a year).
      Everyone has triggers, and if you can figure out what yours are maybe it'll be easier to stop? For me it was stress management and the association of cigs = fun social interaction.

      1 JUUL pod has the nicotine content of almost an entire pack. While vaping certainly is safer than cigarettes, there are no long term studies to see the effects over time. Short term, safer, long term, we have no idea. Obviously won’t be causing cancer with the lack of tar etc, but with issues like popcorn lung being worked out there are probably more to be seen in the future. JUUL is much more popular than cigarettes were. I have no statistics to back that one up, I’ve just seen it. Edit: it amazes me that this is what they choose though, when current knowledge and data shows regular cigarettes and drinking to be significantly more deadly. Crazy. But like they said in the video, People who JUUL are more likely to try cigarettes. And if everyone is JUULing...

    As a 21 year old juul smoker student these regulations are very frustrating. A vast majority of juul/ other e cig smoking college students I know prefer flavors like mango or other fruit/ deserts etc. I don’t know a single person that likes the tobacco flavors. Many of my friends and I got them bc when we were drunk we’d smoke cigs and be disgusted by ourselves the next day. But if they’re made less available or reduce flavors I don’t see why many people won’t turn back. My mother is quitting cigarettes and she even vapes candy flavors rather than traditional. Yes that what might make them more appealing to adolescents, but I think that’s because it makes them more appealing to the rest of us also.You can smoke something that tastes great, you don’t get smoker breath, or as much harm as cigs. Vaping is the lesser of 2 evils. I just don’t understand the effort we are putting into this rather than dealing with cigarettes themselves or idk maybe the opioid crisis? I don’t want to sound harsh here but 16 year olds with juuls isn’t really one of my big concerns rn. Highschoolers will always try to do degenerate shit theyre not supposed to and I’d rather have them vape than smoking cigs.

      The real problem is escalation. One of the fda's main goals is to stop kids from smoking cigarettes. Kids smoke these tasty pods, which have the same amount of nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, then they get addicted. Kids are underdeveloped, abs more likely to get addicted. So they keep buying juul pods, but juuls are expensive, and is don't have money. So they move on to cigarettes because they are cheaper, and easier to get to. Then they are stuck with the bad effects of cigarettes. Also you encounter the dip problem, which is much worse in my opinion. I've see this happen on a regular basis, and I'm sure you have to.

    I get that kids shouldn’t be smoking e cigarettes but WHERE ARE THEIR PARENTS. I feel like this year the government has had to step in to parent children (ie. Tide Pods). Like come on kids KNOW what they are doing. I have a hard time believing kids who smoke these don’t know that they’re not supposed to. I think these parents should be responsible for what their children are doing. I don’t know how they would be held accountable but I just know it’s the fault in lack of parenting not the company’s problem, in my opinion.

    I work in a smoke shop and a high majority of our customers are over 35. Menthol definitely isn't 35% of sales and black youth aren't the ones buying the flavored cigars either. It's 18+ to enter and we ID everyone under 40. Our customers LOVE the fun flavors and are not gonna be happy if they have to disappear because parents aren't paying attention to their kids. It's not ok. And I've been a menthol smoker for 40 years so they better not be discontinuing those! Yikes! I'm all about an age restricted area. Do that and make sure staff ID's. That solves the problem.
    I don't see the shooting of the security guard as a blue on blue accident. They saw a black man with a gun and shot him without even verifying who he was. It's not OK. The officer should be on unpaid leave, not paid leave. Why does he get to sit home with pay when this security guard will never go home again.

    I’m at 23-year-old who has been smoking pretty regularly since I was about 15 and I have now successfully quit most combustible cigarettes and use Juul as an alternative. I find that I prefer the mango flavor because it does not give me the bad taste in my mouth a traditional tobacco flavors do and that was the thing that help me the most in quitting traditional cigarettes. I would feel incredibly sad and if the option of a mango flavored tobacco alternative was no longer an option for me though I still understand that protecting young smokers from starting the habit in the first place is very important. I did find Juul’s new restrictions to ensure people buying their products are verified to be 21 years of age or more to be very heartening. Juul has taken over the market and I commend their commitment to ending the child smoking epidemic.

      get a SMOK infinix and a 30mL bottle of Mango flavoured salt-nic juice at around 40-50mg/mL and fill your own pods. That will not only save you a ton of money over using the JUUL and their pre-filled pods, but will make it much more convenient as you get refills anywhere, anytime and you can also taper off your nicotine levels after a while to become less dependent on nicotine.

    Firstly my sympathy goes out to the family of the security guard who was shot and killed. What I wanted to share was the perspective of someone from a country where guns are mostly entirely illegal. Stories like this feel wholly alien and incomprehensible. I, like most citizens here, have only even seen a firearm a handful of times in my life and always in the hands of trained police officers. I have never in my life met anyone who owns a gun. That leads to a culture where there is an almost entirely safe assumption if you (or a police officer) sees a civilian with a gun - they are almost certainly a dangerous criminal posing a serious threat and should be dealt with accordingly. I recognise all cultures are different and context is important. Equally banning firearms doesn't make everything perfect - we have a significant knife crime problem at the moment. But I wanted to share the perspective of someone with a very different societal experience.

I moved to Canada years ago, and ever since, I've felt so distanced from gun violence that I feel safe in my home and school now, I don't constantly worry about the safety of my family the way we all used to. I've never known anyone murdered in a shooting or gun-related death in Canada, but every once in a while I'll hear about someone brutally killed in their house or school in my home country and it breaks my heart that they never got the chance at a safe life the way I did.

    However the sad thing is, it doesn’t matter what the FDA does. If kids want to smoke they will find a way to do it. It doesn’t matter what flavors are banned or even if vaporizers are banned. Pulling the trigger should never be your first instinct, it should be your last resort. Military personnel have far more restrictions and accountability when discharging a weapon - why do police, who deal with domestic threats (our very own citizens), get so much more leeway and have far less accountability for their actions? That's the opposite of what it should be.

      TRUE, but kids will find a workaround for the identification route.
      A lot of kids do it because it's either "cool" or they like the taste. By removing the flavours the kids like, they might think twice before doing something "cool", and if it's not in their flavour, and they don't like the flavour of the other ones, well they might stop.
      Like I said, the kids will find a workaround for that identification filter juul put in place, but most of them probably still wouldn't go through the hassle of actually doing it, as it would probably involve getting somebody else's social security number.

My lung disease was not from smoking, it was from exposure to black mold that the negligent Mall owner where I owned a business didn't deal with. But as a result I had to quit smoking & took a course at the hospital to learn how to look after myself with this illness. It is a course everyone should take; it taught me alot about how vulnerable lungs are, not the least of which is a little thing called cilia. These are little hair like things that sweep backwards to keep things we've inhaled out of our lungs. 1 cigarette paralyzes them for an hour, leaving virtually an open pipeline for carcinogens etc. to enter & attack your lungs. Most smokers often don't wait longer than an hour before having another cigarette so for those people their cilia remains paralyzed, making them more suseptable. I was a very light smoker, I rarely even smoked 1 cigarette a day. But although I truly enjoyed smoking, learning how it puts you at risk has caused me to not miss it at all.

    On the Juul and FDA story, first off I have to give props to Juul for taking action on their own accord. They're taking actions AFTER reports, and just before FDA rulings, yes, but regardless of how late it is, they're still taking action in a well thought-out way, and they are NOT just saying they'll do something. They've got a clear and, I feel, good plan laid out, with clearly defined actionable steps they're immediately starting to take. That is commendable, and well deserving of recognition; creating an actionable plan and starting to follow through with it is something even the best of us struggle with in our daily lives, not to mention a massive company with hundreds of millions or billions of sales, and tons of money floating around. It's important to recognize their efforts!
    That being said, I can understand where people are coming from when they say it's too little too late; Juul has been marketed very favourably towards kids, with both their commercials and flavours. These changes have come after they've secured their market well, so I can understand being a bit upset over that. However, I still think any action in a positive direction is a good thing.
    On the FDA's actions, I agree with and support all of them. I've never smoked or vaped before in my life, but my parents, grandparents, other relatives, and many of my friends have; and it's absolutely disgusting what it does to you. It's wickedly addictive, so much so it'll physically make you sick when you try to quit it, not to mention it kills you, and it's just plain disgusting to be around. I'd be very happy with cigarettes and the like being banned completely, though I realize that's a terrible idea and not at all fair to the people who smoke. I can live with grown ass adults choosing to kill themselves in a disgusting, expensive, and horrifying way; but kids shouldn't be smoking, so anything to help prevent that is a positive in my eyes.

    On the JUUL topic today. I started smoking cigarettes in high school, and a huge part of what made it cool was that it was "adult". Just like how rum and other things of that nature were cool it was because things were an acquired taste. Yes just a part. My group (5 of us, but there were a lot more in my area(more than I can count on hands and toes)) thought the more "tobacoee" the better. I smoked the boldest thing i could find, the more tobacco flavored the better, kamel reds were a delicacy (yes that flavor is spelled with a k not c). When I started vaping I chose tobacco flavors. Now I don't at all, my favorite flavor has unicorn in the name. These products are not and never will be marketed to kids, what it is is an attempt to be cool to the older millenials that as adults still watch things like bojack horsemen or southpark, or even just the meme savy of us. Any kids getting these products are because of clearks not checking ids, or like me as a kid older people buying them.
    Important fact, e-cigs are not 100% safe. What they are is a "safer"alternative. Adults should be able to buy whatever they want as long as they are aware of the health concerns, and the flavor of that thing should not be mandated by the government at all. If kids buy from an adult, that adult should go to jail. Kids will make mistakes, but there is no legislation that could stop that.

      I smoked all through high school too, hated the taste but the addiction was strong. When I discovered vaping, my friend had jolly rancher flavored juice, I was super quick to jump ship to that. And it's been so much easier to work my way down from the addiction since I can slowly drop the nicotine level, I started at 18mg and am at 6mg now. As you said kids are always going to find a path to drugs to look cool, I see the same amount of kids vaping now as I saw smoking when I was in school, it's not the flavor it's the look. I think stronger ID checking and discouraging bulk selling to consumers would help a lot, rather than killing one of the most appealing parts of vaping to those coming from cigarettes.

    What they don't tell you about the Roberson incident was that it occurred in a dark alley at around 4am. What Roberson was wearing that night is still in question but most reports say that he was wearing mostly black in a dark alley. He was carrying a gun that he didn't have licenses to carry. The club didn't not have proper permits for many different aspects, one being that they should not have been selling alcohol as the permit needed for them to expired the month before. It is all seems like a bad situation that is going to get a good officer's career destroyed because it seems like everyone is going to pull the race card on him.

    "Our intent was never to have youths use JUUL..."
    Sounds nice but I have considerable experience in corporate business, so I'll translate what that actually means.
    "Our intent was never to have youths use JUUL... past the point where we received too much negative media and government attention. Then we want to preemptively stop promoting to youths as a facade of giving any kind of shit past our profit margins and market share".
    While I'm sure it was never explicitly said to market to kids and possibly wasn't their original intent, I can swear to you that once they saw the success of it with kids and realized they're not directly breaking any laws, they amped up their marketing to endear the product to kids.
    Until now when it's always smarter to self regulate vs wait for government regulation.

    Personally believe any cop who murders an innocent person, even by accident, should be immediately terminated and receive jail time after a court hearing.
    My reasoning is this happens too often without consequence. And while some officers may not deserve it, if this is a standard then many others will think twice before ever firing their gun.
    They'll wonder if this is worth risking their own life on.

    • @jynexe3056
      @jynexe3056 5 років тому +3

      I disagree. If a guy has a gun, and its possibly threatening, you have to make a decision in a matter of milliseconds, otherwise you or a fellow officer or an innocent civilian dies. You don't want cops to second guess in a situation where they absolutely need to use lethal force, and that second-guessing costs a life.
      I think the best solution is enhancing officers situational analysis at a glance. Seeing a situation, analyzing it, and taking the correct course of action within a second.

      @@jynexe3056 I'd agree if too often cops haven't murdered so many innocent people. While there should be more training, real consequences should be enacted as well and this is something that can be enacted a lot quicker and more cost effectively than a whole revamping of their training systems

      @@jynexe3056 The officers who brought in Nikolas Cruz, Dylan Roof, Robert Bowers, and countless others didn't seem to be scared of the person holding a weapon they just used to murder several people. Add to that the fact that the cop shot in the "victim's" vicinity ("victim" meaning the shooter who Jemel was pinning down), and this seems like an absolutely unfit officer at best, and a racially-motivated murder at worst. In any event, that cop should be fired simply for being bad at his job, like any other cop who freaks out so much that they kill an innocent person.
      Police work isn't for everyone, and if an officer proves unfit to serve in that capacity then they deserve to be fired, and if they've shot an innocent person then their pension should go to the family of the victim. I have a feeling that would also help increase situational awareness among police officers.

    • @jynexe3056
      @jynexe3056 5 років тому

      @@christophergibbs2616 I think you're right, but there needs to be a bit more nuance.
      For example, if there's a case where the officer panicked and shot someone they shouldn't have, that's grounds for dismissal, something equivalent to a dishonorable discharge from the army. However, if the intent was to kill the person for any other reason (ie racial, political, economic, etc reasons), that should be a dishonorable discharge with a civilian murder trial after. The trick is the prosecutor has to prove intent, which prevents those who make an honest mistake from being tried as a murderer, but still provides a punishment for failure to do your duties correctly, but it also treats those who use the position to murder someone the same as a murderer

And honestly, she told me parents buy them for their kids so they "stay out of trouble" and they think they are safe. No Jack. Your logic is flawed. That is both a straw man and slippery slope fallacy. That being said, many people would agree that even severe drugs should be legalized in a free country. That is because if one's actions does not effect you, others, or the nation, the government should not be able to intervene. Obviously driving under influence is different, as it effects others, but what someone chooses to do behind closed doors, even if it is wrong, should not result in jail time. I am not arguing that people should do drugs, as me personally, as well as my future kids would do all it takes to make sure that drug use would not be involved in our family, but what I am saying is that these decisions should not be the government's responsibility. Better parenting (or better guardian protection) is more important.
