Don't normally comment here but on brexit on I must admit, you have done a great summery on whats going on. The only thing i would add that the media don't seem to report on is just how divided the country is getting, and how badly parliament is treating Scotland / NI, remember these countries voted to stay in and yet have no voice on what happens. Also anyone that voted to remain could see this situation happening 2 years ago (its why we voted remain). Some politicians want the hard brexit, they will derail everything they can to get it. And whilst the rest of Parliament is split between no brexit / soft brexit / another vote, they will get what they want.

JakinTheBox I'm truly sorry you are facing this difficult situation. The UK side of arrangements has always been, as far as i'm aware, to honour E.U citizens who came to the UK through legal means, it would after all be unfair to do otherwise, something I even heard Mr. Farage state during the debates.
The same, as i'm sure you are keenly aware, cannot be be said for the EU who are forcing British nationals through these hoops. If you wanted any more proof of how disgusting this organization is, stand back and consider if Britiain or ANY country decided to make any nationality get out of their country or go through special specific rules once they arrived through the legal channels. That is insane, racist and inhuman.

Spectral Images just don’t use race when you mean nationality. We all know they are completely different things, it’s just needlessly confusing to act as if they are interchangeable. It’s as stupid as saying Chinese to refer to everyone from Asia, you are just begging for someone to call you out.
Anyway, you can call it disgusting if you like but IF IT’S TRUE it would be nothing new. In our liberal societies we do often treat people differently based on their nationality and there are many instances in which it’s easier for people from a country A to go to and reside in a country B then the other way around. The EU itself has many agreements like this with other countries and I bet the UK did too before joining the Union.
I do not know all the facts regarding what will happen to foreigners living in the UK and vice versa and I am definitely not gonna make my mind about it right now. Given that the Brexit as a whole has just been a complete shit show of propaganda and misinformation, random UA-cam comments don’t mean much to me, no offense.
      Anyway, have a nice day.

    Hey Phil,
I am a 19 year old UK citizen. At the time of the Brexit Vote I was 2 months away from being able to vote and therefore couldn't. However that didn't stop me and others in a age range taking an interest in the vote. We felt that as it was our future they should have lowered the age to vote for this vote so that those who would be impacted the most had a voice. From being a bystanders it was VERY clear that the UK public were lied to and severely under educated on the outcome of Brexit. Since the vote all that is on the news everyday is Brexit and it has got to a point where people who I work with (whom are a variety of ages and knowledge) just want Brexit to be over. The theatrics are wearing thin and the people are fed. A lot of this is due to the lack of education we received from all parties. As a Nation we should care about the outcome of this deal but people are so fed up they just don't care anymore which is sad as it is still our future that is being decided. I think that the UK and EU should agree on a final deal and then the people of the UK have a Vote on the deal on offer, where we have a clear idea on what the outcome will be and what it's knock on effects may be. You may also see that people of the UK will being to care again and most likely see more voters than ever. But also allowing those of us who were to young to vote to get a chance to have their say.
Loving watching your show everyday, keep it up :)

There has always been presence of jibing in the house as has been its tradition, but its only been this Toxic since Brexit. It’s a society wide venom on all sides which is probably been one of the worst and least concidered causes of Brexit due to its intangibility.
Along with this we did not used to have street assassination of MP’s, we did not used to have the accusation of traitor (which frankly would have been an alien and dangerous thing to say beforehand) is now normal from pro’brexit outlets, we did not used to concider the rest of democratic Europe enemies, and we did not use to court players like Erdogan and Putin (although the last one fell apart in a hilariously pretty insult match between Boris and the Russian foreign secretary and the second went nowhere, which is good).

    @alittleunorthodox 5 років тому

I'm a UK citizen living in the UK. I voted to remain in the referendum. I have voted for different political parties in the last two general elections and hold no strong allegiance with any party. I saw the lies peddled by the leave campaign and tried to open discussion with those around me during the debate, but with no success.
I spent time both in my university city and hometown during and after the referendum, as well as during the last two general elections. This exposed me to the reasoning from different sides and perspectives. This may well be why, although I desperately do not want to leave the EU, I do not think there should be a second 'people's vote'. The time for wishing differently has passed and the UK needs to focus its efforts on reaching a deal that does not completely isolate us from Europe. There is no perfect deal and never will be. I find the battle between soft/hard Brexit wasteful and perplexing as if a deal is reached it will most likely have to incorporate elements of both.
I do not agree with May on many issues and I agree with the Tory party in general on even fewer. However, I have a great respect for her. May knows she is not popular with many British people and understands that history will not remember her kindly regardless of the outcome. Yet she continues to lead and to take criticism from people that have stated that they could do better and reach this unattainable ideal deal. People who have later gone on to resign and left their offices and departments in chaos. She has put aside her reputation and legacy to make sure that the UK has a leader it can point to in blame, and rarely with pride.
A vote of no confidence will most likley lead to a succession of people taking the PM office, then jumping ship when they realise they cannot fix it all and do everything they promised, which will make reaching a deal impossible. Even worse it could lead to figures such as Mogg taking control, a man who encompasses the blurred lines between UKIP and Conservative. The only thing that could make Brexit worse than no leader is unapologetically bigoted leadership that will take us back goodness knows how many decades, if not centuries. Again, the time for wishful thinking and stating Y member of Z party could do better is over. May is not the best Britain could have hoped for, but she is far, far better than the alternatives we have now.
I once hoped that we would not leave the EU, but that hope is long gone. Now I aspire to the UK either not crashing out of the EU with no leadership and no deal, or not sailing out across the channel on a woodworm-infested ship captained by people that set Latin choir music as their morning alarm. Yes, we are a physical island, but that does not mean we have to be a metaphorical one too.

On the back of the Indy Ref, we were promised that by staying in the UK we would not leave the European Union. Less than 2 years later, the vote for leaving the EU happens. Scotland vote to remain as it is what were promised. Look at population numbers in the UK Countries and you can see why we would never have been able to stay if 1 UK countries votes in the opposite direction. I do not agree with Brexit, and with speaking about this with friends and family, all we can hope for is a second vote. You speak to people who voted to leave, and after all of the negotiations and seeing how the talks have went about, these people have changed their minds and would now like to stay. As someone who lives in Northern Ireland, a mere 20 minutes from the boarder, I feel completely slighted and ignored by the majority that voted to leave. During the Brexit talks, Northern Ireland was, in my opinion, completed ignored and forgotten about. It was all about the "UK" getting a good deal. I say it was really England getting a good deal out of this and the rest of us are to follow them like a lost little child. The boarder situation with Ireland is extremely delicate and although the ministers and Theresa May will say the peace process has been a complete success, they are wrong. Come to Northern Ireland, come to Belfast and Derry for a month, especially on the 12th of July and St. Patrick's day. You will see that any disturbance will cause utter turmoil in the country. During the talks, no one thought of NI. Now when the decision has been made on our behalf, they have to try figure out what they are going to do with the 1.875 million that live here. I don't stand by this decision and don't feel like a member of the UK, more a piece of land that represents the hold on the county that the government are unwilling to let go because they don't want to appear as if they are giving in.

@@undead9736 that's just not correct, though. As someone who isn't even a Catholic (for full disclosure, because some may be inclined to read a political agenda into my comment), there were many reasons on both sides for people getting involved. Some genuinely believed that it was a last resort to protest the gross mistreatment they'd suffered, others a noble cause, a way to gain influence, a I case of kill or be killed, fear mongering resulting in poor decisions, etc. As in any kind of warfare, good intentions were not enough to prevent many from engaging in horrific acts that they believed were for the greater good. Absolutely there were plenty of incredibly evil individuals who took advantage of the tension to gain power and commit terrible crimes, but not everyone can be painted with the same brush. It was terrible, truly, but not entirely bloodshed for the sake of bloodshed (especially to begin with).

no it wasn't. the nationalists wanted the right to vote in Stormont (among other issues), and were being denied that right by irish unionists like Paisley... In no way was it against an occupying force, infact the nationalists were petitioning the brits to intervene and take that responsibility from stormmont until it stopped using racial segregation.
Also to suggest the troubles was to secure the wishes of the Civil rights movement is blatantly wrong. The IRA Hawks made it clear to the Doves, that the IRA should engage in violence for their own goal of Irish Reunification, not the NICRA's goals, which they thought would discourage Irish reunification.

I am a UK citizen to voted against Brexit, as soon as the vote was passed I started looking for ways out of the country. As we are still part of the EU I can easily and freely move to another EU country with little to no issues.
I ended up getting a job working and living in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I then left the UK and have now been living in the Netherlands for the past year and a half. I could see what is happening, happening and got out.
Now my concern is that I can remain living in the Netherlands after Brexit, this is still up in the air and, as far as I can tell, is up to the government of the Netherlands and not the UK government (thankfully) there has been a lot of talk about EU citizens being able to remain in the UK after Brexit, but nothing about UK citizens remaining in EU countries. There was so much misinformation and literally the DAY the vote was announced, the leave party said ‘Oh you thought we could do those things we said we could? What made you think that???’ It never should have been a referendum in the first place. While I admire that Theresa May wants to honour the referendum, democracy fails if we don’t and she was very much against leaving in the first place, I don’t feel it’s a good referendum to honour. Now we have a draft withdrawal agreement the British public have the most accurate information with which to form an opinion. A second referendum is the only way to fix this. I'm Scottish living in N.Ireland. Brexit has been insane from the start. The leave camp had very little plan beyond their idea of how things could be and some of that was nothing more than a pipe dream or an advert painted on the side of a bus 😜 That's why as soon as they did win all the leaders of that campaign dropped it like a hot brick and walked away leaving it for someone else to sort out. The Remain campaign lost because they ran a campaign based on fear and threats. Worked great for them in Scotland in 2014 Indyref but backfired big time when they tried the same bs during Brexit. Critically the Leave and Remain campaign's weren't fought down party lines. You had people from the same party pushing different objectives. There is a mix of Brexiters and Remainers in the same bloody government even now that were meant to sort it out. There is even a mix in the opposition parties that was meant to keep them in check. The entire thing has been a shit show.
I voted remain but the result was for leave and that's the way it has to go. The problem is the people left to sort it out have pissed all the time to plan it out away. They've argued and squabbled so much and not dealt with how divisive it has been in the communities and utterly screwed us all when it comes to any sort of position to negotiate from with the EU. If I were the EU I'd throw us out on our arse tbh. The silver lining is during Indyref in Scotland I supported independence. SNP are just sitting back watching the Union implode and support for Scottish independence get stronger and stronger at home. Keep an eye on Scotland. Things are going to get very interesting there in the next year or so.

There has to be a second referendum. I come from Cornwall, the poorest county in England and the 2nd poorest in the UK, on a poverty line with Hungary and Lithuania. We benefit massively from EU funding - this is one of the many reasons I voted remain. The lies of the leave campaign make Donald Trump look like a saint, playing on the so called "injustices" of the EU on each different sect of society (Eg. Fisherman, NHS or anyone who pays tax for that matter) and claiming a quick fix, a quick fix which will now leave almost every single person in the UK in a worse position than they were before. Jeremy Corbin let us down by not providing a true opposition so it was essentially Mike Tyson vs Ghandi in a boxing ring. Theresa May may as-well be a lactose intolerant vegan selling milk, she has always been a remainer and was never the right person to deliver anything close to a smooth Brexit, but Jacob Reece-Mogg is basically a 1930's catholic priest and Boris Johnson is a dithering idiot with a knowledge of how to manipulate the press. Best outcome is a no-brexit outcome from a second referendum and a labour government to move forward from this complete mess. (And to any European that judges the whole UK, remember 48% of us lost as well and we're about as angry as can be)

North and south of Ireland were not in conflict - the north of Ireland was in conflict with itself due to roughly 50% being Protestant and identifying as British and 50% being Catholics and identifying as Irish citizens (with northern Irish catholic’s having limited rights - sparking the uprising)
As someone who lives in Northern Ireland I am very worried. Ireland is an agriculturally based country and currently the processing of agricultural goods the country operates as a whole with both north and south utilising factories, processing plants etc in place. If borders occur it will be terrible for both north and south economies.
Plus extremely difficult for families and people like me who live near the border and currently work and have business both on both the north and south.

The arguement that the Republic couldn't financially support the North is contested. An All-Ireland economy in the EU would grow our GDP. I live in the UK, in London, I voted to remain, and I still feel the same now. However, I completely understand and sympathise with the people who voted leave, as there are a lot of people in the UK who feel very disenfranchised with the EU and its effect on the UK (my family included). However, I think that we should definitely at least have a 2nd vote, because looking back, the whole Referendum was an absolute mess. There were people who flat out lied about important points (such as the extra £350million a week that the NHS would receive in funding should we leave), health care being a BIG point for all of us over here. Our Health Service is already at breaking point, so that sort of money would make a huge difference! But almost immediately after people voted to leave, the Leave campaigners changed their tune, and said that the money wouldn't be available.
Then you have people "switching sides", for example Boris Johnson, Rees-Mogg, all to further progress their own political careers, and on top of that, you have right wing campaigners such as Nigel Farage worming his way into whatever position he can to make himself look better.
To be quite honest, the whole situation is a mess, and although I understand that some people think a 2nd Vote would be needless and contradictory, I think it should be down to the people to choose the future of the country, with as much information and knowledge as they can, without being lied to, or sold false promises and dreams. If we were to have a 2nd vote, and the result was the same, then fine, let's go forward with it, but seeing as the original referendum was so tight, I think if you take into consideration the false promises and outright lies sold to the public by BOTH sides (both leave and remain were awful), I think the result could be much different to what we had originally.

Scottish here, and probably the most interesting thing about this whole brexit is one of the key arguments for the Scottish referendum by the remain campaign was if you leave you leave the EU and the single market and would not get back in with countries like Spain were completely against Scottish independence, as it runs the risk of kicking up support for Catalonia's desire to be independent from them, now appear to be more open to the thought of it. the Scottish referendum was a close call as well and now one of the key arguments they used against Scotland leaving the UK has been taken away, the fact Scotland voted in a huge majority to stay with the EU itself and this deal is a bad deal for Scotland. Its making a strong argument for Scottish independence even stronger.
Also on a further note, what happens to the UK with article 13 if they leave the EU?

I'm a rather ignorant Texan where Scotland is concerned. I saw how close the vote for independence got and am now curious. Have the people who want independence gotten angry enough to fight for independence? Or are they still trying the diplomatic route? If they achieved independence, would they support the EU or remain an independent state?

@@richardsmall2855 As ignorant as you, or more, I believe they would need some help and the USA wouldn't be that someone (seeing the US-UK relations) so the EU would probably swoop in and "lend a hand"

I voted remain, but at the time I could see the benefits of leaving the EU; I mainly ended up voting for what would benefit me as an individual. Personally my biggest problem with Brexit is how poorly thought out it is, especially considering how long there's been talk about leaving. Certain parts of the Tory party have been wanting to leave the EU for decades, yet now that it's crunch time no one has a game plan?

PeggyKoneko its hard for the leave politicians to do anything when every decision is being made my a remainer and her remainer cabinet

    • @lunayen

Because they never had a game plan in the first place. Just a board full of brain dumps written on it. If there were talks to leave, they would have had at least a draft on the table before the referendum was proposed.

PeggyKoneko UKIP has a game plan.
The only reason the deal is so shit is because the PM was actually a remainer so it’s in her best interest for the deal to be as shit as possible so she can make the UK a Vassal state or just remain in the EU entirely.
Don’t push this on the leave campaign just because it fits your agenda, we all know what’s going on here.

Thank you Phil for the helpful info regarding Brexit. I can still remember the scary (at the time, before US 2016 election...yikes) interviews of people who voted in favor of Brexit saying something along the lines of “I didn’t actually think they’d do it.” With a surprising number of voters saying that after the vote and how far from ‘smooth’ the Brexit process has been, I think another vote is justifiable. If another vote were to happen, hopefully truly representing the people, I’m curious how different the results would be. If think there is a good chance a re-vote would not be in favor of Brexit.
