  • A track from John Bromley - Songs, which was released as a CD on the Rev-Ola label in 2009 featuring a re-issue of Bromley's 1969 sole album Sing along with additional demos, outtakes and singles recorded on the way.
Bromley was primarily a songwriter who wrote songs for luminaries such as Shirley Bassey, Paul Anka, Jackie De Shannon (Come On Down), John Farnham and The Ace Kefford Stand (This World's an Apple). At some point in the late 60s he was encouraged by Polydor to collect some of his singles together for his full length album, Sing, which featured backing from British psych-rock band the Fleur De Lys. The album didn't do as well as anticipated; there are many speculative reasons for this, such as the emotional climate of the Western World which was moving from the whimsical, optimistic Carnaby Street-esque pop that defined the psychedelic 60s to more progressive rock with disillusionment and heavier themes. Clouds had moved in with the assassinations of some prominent figureheads and the near-collapse of the Civil Rights movement, as well as the ongoing involvement in Vietnam.
Songs features enjoyable and thoughtful heart-driven pop with plenty of hooks, clanging guitars, choppy piano and sweet strings paired with great lyrics, reminiscent of - if I may - Harry Nilsson.
This one is a demo included as bonus material on the CD, John's original which he wrote for The Ace Kefford Stand - a meaty, bluesy number with plenty of chops.
