I tend to set the af-l button to continuous focus and set the camera to manual focus. That way I can press and release back focus button for single focus, hold it down for continuous focus or use the focus ring for manual focus, basically all three focus modes on at the same time.
Dude, you continue to outdo yourself in both your video production and photography. Killer images of Japan. Super jealous. Now I want to go pull out my X100T and have a play...
I just purchased an X100F, my first Fuji camera, and this video was incredibly helpful as I am trying to get more familiar with my camera. Thank you so much!
Enjoyed this, and I pretty much have the same 3 AUTO ISO settings on my 4 Fuji cameras. One tip: on all 4 cameras I set the right control button to AUTO ISO so I can QUICKLY change between the 3 settings. And a further button push to the right allows me to change the minimum shutter speed or max ISO in the Auto ISO setting. And just a half press on the shutter locks that in and I can quickly start shooting.
Setting your camera on 'auto' will give you a good idea of the range for a particular setting. Then you can take it from there in the Aperture, Shutter priority or Manual mode.
I love reviewing your videos filmed in Japan. Nice work. They make me want to revisit Tokyo. I spent the best years of my life in Tokyo, mainly in Roppongi not far away from the Russian Embassy. I lived in many countries and Japan remains number one in my heart.
07:00 NR only applies to JPG, same with sharpening. The muddy details and artifacts people see in LR is the bad demosaicing of the RAW file and depends on the amount of detail in the image.
everything only applies to JPG, its jsut the program may use 'reflect shooting settings' or whatever it is labelled as to automatically default to those settings. Auto-white balance may be useful i guess since then the program uses a reading from the shoot, or just use the auto-white in program. The only change is using DR settings - this intentionally underexposes on a lower iso, and turns up shadows or a curve to preserve highlights. So the RAW would be darker in that case.
I had my X100F at Disneyland last month and I'm taking on a trip to Seattle next week. I'm so glad I saw your video, because while it's been great for studio stuff, it felt less intuitive when I had it out on the street. Now I'm going to test out your ideas on my neighborhood so I'm ready for Seattle!
in camera noise reduction tip is great. shot a hockey game last week and the faces were all smeared and shot a game last night with the noise reduction on -3 and the faces look great! thanks a ton!
Just got my x100f and love it :) I thought the autofocus was quite loud but I realised that it was because the noise simply lasted longer due to the af being slower than my DSLR therefore seeming louder.
My understanding is that +2 on the shadows actually "crushes" the shadows making them darker. I think what you want is actually -2 on the shadows therefore retaining the shadow detail. I may be wrong though as I haven't hd a lot of time to play with this setting. Hopefully someone else can confirm?
Yes. ‘Plus’ adds shadow and adds highlight. ‘Minus’ reduces shadow and reduces highlight. But only if you shoot jpg. Raw files have no adjustments applied.
You always know how to comment and compliment on the aspect of the video that took the longest to make 🙌 They're still not perfect in my eyes, but I'm working on some new designs 👍
Some nice tips. I've owned every model of the X100 since it came out, and with the addition of the joystick controller on the back I thought they'd got it almost perfect and thus I'd hold off upgrading from the F for a good long time. But the V offers three upgrades that made it irresistible: 1) the tilting screen, which makes it even more usable for street photography, since you can be less obtrusive in grabbing shots of people; 2) the touch screen (although that meant losing the joystick), and 3) the redesigned lens. I use a Canon setup for all of my other photography (recently got an EOS R as my main body; kept my 90D and 80D for specific prime lenses) but the Fuji was just made for street photography, or just when you to have a great camera handy on a casual outing. I use setting similar to yours, though I mostly stick with auto ISO on the #2 setting.
Great tips! Actually I use almost identical settings on my small sensor X30, only difference is slightly lower auto ISO levels. Classic chrome is awesome. Fuji rocks. Will be getting a X100F when prices starts to go down.
Thanks a lot Joe! This is just a great camera. Your honest videos on it definitely helped me buy it. Really loving it, I'm surprised by how easy it is to use.
Can anyone help me. My night photos on my X100F are so blurry. I literally can’t breath when taking a photo for fear the image will look like soup. Any solutions?
For night time if you're at f2 or f2.8 at 1/125th second and around ISO 3200 you should be able to shoot an average scene lit by street lights. I'd check your ISO is high enough - if it's too low, around the iso 200 mark, your camera will use a longer shutter speed to let in the correct amount of light. Longer shutter speed > camera shake > soup.
Ah! Unfortunately I left Japan at the end of August and only just catching up with the edits. I'll be visiting Japan pretty much once a year at least, so maybe next time!
Thanks for all the tips. Your other video on X100F definitely had an influence on my decision to buy that camera over other options. Liking the camera so far.
New to your channel and new owner of Fijifilm X100V. I have a question regarding 8:47, I don't quite understand "in your settings, I've set up manual override..." Where is that? Thank you!
Thanks for helpful video. Question: At 17 seconds on the video, there is a shot of the LCD screen "SELECT CUSTOM SETTINGS". I have an X100F with Rev 2.10 software and cannot find a way to get the image shown at 17 seconds. When I go into "SELECT CUSTOM SETTINGS" I get a list rather than a grid. Could it be you are running a different version of camera software, or is there a setting that I am missing?
+2 on shadows crushes them. -2 brings them back. I know its weird because negative reduces the highligts and positive brightens the highlights. So yeah its basically backwards with shadows.
Just bought this camera, so really helpful, thanks so subscribed. Not used the X100 series before but keen to try it. My Other camera is a Ricoh GR II, so I will keep that too.
Thank you!!! I was using some settings from another video chanell but I didn't think my colors were good because there were so many colors, sat, contract etc.... and this new 100F I just got I think the colors look so great turning it on straight off the box and all I am learning from your great video here is so much easier and awesome!!!!
Just got this camera! Thank you for the review, it makes me even more excited to get out and shoot some street photography. Gotta wait for this crazy heat in Phx. Do you shoot with the Chrome film simulation the most?
Hi Joe, I would also love to see if you do some other field other than street photography with x100f, more like general/landscape. I would really love to see your landscape photos with x100f as well. as always, you are awesome!
I set my ND filter onto the custom button in front (in the middle of viewfinder selector), found it more intuitive as I can just press it with my middle finger without taking my face away from the camera. But the battery life is still quite bad IMHO
Hahah you have quick eyes! Rather embarrassingly, I thought they _were_ posing for me, but then noticed they were friends with the person to my left who was also taking their picture 😂
hi Joe, I am about to change my way of taking photos, using this kind of camera. Do you not miss image stabilization or the zoom? 4K movie also not possible. How do you see this? thanks man.
that won't effect the RAW file. I think the only setting in Q menu that will effect your RAW files is Dynamic Range setting. Cross reference using the web..
I have a question regarding light adjustments in the camera. If you're shooting RAW, does bumping up the shadows to +2 affect the RAW in LR or is it purely for seeing the photo differently while reviewing on the camera's LCD? I would think by doing that it would start to stray away from a RAW image as now you're making adjustments. I've got an x100s and I debate the same changes. Not sure if I quite understand the workings of all of it though! Any answers are welcome!
Hi. Do you know why when i set my auto iso with min. shutter speed 1\200 the camera still shoting with much lower shutter speed 1\30, 1\15 depend of exposition
It could be related to a number of things. Are you maybe shooting in normal to dark conditions with quite a small aperture (rather than auto)? Or is the Auto ISO you've set still not high enough for the correct exposure? The camera will never go higher than the max ISO you set, and if a manual aperture is set it won't change it, leaving just the shutter speed to come out much lower. Something else to consider is the exposure compensation dial on the right side. Make sure it's set to 0 for perfect exposures and not lower or higher. Hope that helps somewhat!
Yep! Square hood for a square sensor! I found an excellent article recently that showed the design aspects of different shape hoods etc. that was really eye-opening, but sadly I can't find it again. I've searched my history and there are two specific links that I think they maybe were, but are now 404 pages, so I'm not sure if I'll ever find it again. Essentially, because the lens on the X100F doesn't rotate, a round hood isn't necessary and a square one offers optimum coverage for the whole sensor.
Hello, thank you for sharing this very useful video, As a beginner I have a question: what metering settings do you normally use with x100f when shooting streetphotograpy?
Hi Joe! I just got my x100f too and it's amazing! One thing I can't figure out is the focus. I can't seem to focus then recompose my image, it loses the initial focus. Testing out the different settings, but with no luck so far :(
Thank you for the great video. Would you please give me some advice on choosing the lens of Fuji. 23mm or 35mm f 1.4 or f2? I want to find one can shot portrait and street.thanks again!
Hi Joe, can share what you think of the lens on the X100F. I have read that is soft at f/2, do you find this and does it affect your style of shooting? Would it be preferable to go with the X-T20 and 23mm f/2? Thanks!
Thanks Joe I recently purchased the X100F after watching your videos.. initially used in Melbourne and now off to Japan.. following your footsteps. Thanks for the auto iso tips I have now set to the same and assigned a function button to quickly switch.. Any tips on your focus setting? Like the hood. I went with JJC that still allows original lens cap
Joe Allam had a better test run yesterday in wet markets in Singapore.. using some of your tips to improve my lightroom workflow.. found your vlog originally from Thomas Heaton.. now my 2 fav photography vlogs.. keep up the great work
Paul Smith Did you use it in the rain or drizzle? If so what was your experience? I'm looking forward to buying an x100f and i was wondering how it held up in wet and humid areas. Thanks for any help or advice... Oh and I hope you've tape over the diopter wheel area as some people have said you can get dirt in there.
Beginner question here, is there any big difference between the X100F and XT20 in taking good still images? As far as i have searched, they're both the same model of unit inside. I have a minimum budget so, which one should I look into or do you guys have anymore other referrals. Thank you.
Leichinzo I feel like the differences in the image quality depends largely on the fact that X-T20 uses interchangeable lenses, and those lenses are generally better than X100F if you're using it wide open. 23mm R WR F2 at F2 would give you more sharpness in image quality, but unless you're pixel peeping, the differences are almost unnoticeable.
Thank you, I guess I'll be mindful and get a X-T20 instead for broader range of photography or is the X-T10 enough for beginners? I really don't get much of the upgrade.
Yep, but what I'm trying to say is that I'm experimenting with a different "base" level of shadows, to save always having to adjust it in post. Either way is non-destructive, just seeing if it saves a few extra steps along the way 👍
fgsz291 raw file is just raw camera data without settings so yes you are correct. What he is saying is that his base edit starts at +2 shadowtones and start from there and edit everything else
Hey joe, considering you can get the X-E3 with the 24mm F2 for less than the X-100F would you recommend it over the X-100F? Do you think you'll get your hands on one to do a review?

Hey joe, can you can show us how to do that manual focus? You are an excellent photographer btw

I want to use this thing :))). Great video Joe mate. Been following for a couple years now and it's great seeing how your videos have improved.
I set my ND filter onto the custom button in front (in the middle of viewfinder selector), found it more intuitive as I can just press it with my middle finger without taking my face away from the camera. But the battery life is still quite bad IMHO
Can you do one for the V?
Once again, great video! Thank you especially for the Auto ISO modes, it's quite useful!
Bought this cam for my birthday because of you. Please go back to the Philippines and go on a photowalk with us :( love your vids! More power
Should we use ND filter only on sunny days, or just leave it switched on all the time?
Wow! Another great video! Thanks Joe
Great video! Have you considered adding a thumb grip? I can't imagine using my T without one.
Searched the comments didn't see ask. For your custom Auto ISO settings what do you set the sensitivity to and why?
just picked on up! thanks for sharing your settings sir.
Thanks for this great video. Would love to know any setting tips you have for using this camera indoors to capture action shots and events.
i am eyeing the new Canon 85mm f/1.4 IS L USM and will buy it when it is out in november, can't wait.
Thanks! Very interesting video. What about metering setting, what you use mostly?
Japan has a lot of spots you can visit. Cliff, Flower, City, Village. U can visit Rambalac on youtube

What iso profiles would you use for uk weather winter? The same as you have there?
Can you please tell me which software you use for adding those Instagram & UA-cam icons/badges on your video. They look very cool and simple. Thanks
I made them in Photoshop and exported as png files. Glad you like them!
Yes they look awesome. Thanks
hi Joe, I am about to change my way of taking photos, using this kind of camera. Do you not miss image stabilization or the zoom? 4K movie also not possible. How do you see this?
thanks man.
Beautiful! Have you stated what lens comes with the camera and which Lens you are using in the video?! Thanks!
Any thoughts on the X-E3? Seems like a good comparison to the X100F, but most people only compare it to the XT20
I want to know what model is that beautiful lenshood!
Would you recommend this camera over the x-t20? What are your thoughts?
Can you also use these settings for the xt100?
Hey Joe! Do you back-button focus on your X100F? Just curious whether it's simply to much hassle for street photography. Thanks.
Love all your videos! Great content! Any tips to shoot the streets under freezing cold weather? Winter is coming 😂
Is raw files going to be affected if I set the noise reduction at -2 ? I thought its only for jpeg.
that won't effect the RAW file. I think the only setting in Q menu that will effect your RAW files is Dynamic Range setting. Cross reference using the web..
very informative and well presented.

Joe Allam thank you. It was because the iso was not hight enought in dark condition
Any particular reason why you got the square hood lens and not the round one from Fujifilm or JJC? 🤔
Great vid. That inbuilt nd filter looks so useful. You at all tempted by the XE3?
Hello, thank you for sharing this very useful video, As a beginner I have a question: what metering settings do you normally use with x100f when shooting streetphotograpy?
Joe do you still use the fuji film
Will you consider getting the 50mm conversion lens for the x100F? If you do, please do a review as I am still struggling whether I should buy it?
Really enjoyed this video!!!!
Hi Joe! I just got my x100f too and it's amazing! One thing I can't figure out is the focus. I can't seem to focus then recompose my image, it loses the initial focus. Testing out the different settings, but with no luck so far :(
Does your lenshood get in the way when using ovf mode? Great video by the way thanks!
Hey, Joe. Really enjoying your vids, man. Keep it up. Question: what brand lens hood is that you got on the F? Also, where can I get it?
Joe, what aspect ratio do you use if you're planning on uploading to Instagram?
what type of shutter do you use joe, mechanical or electronic?
Thank you for the great video. Would you please give me some advice on choosing the lens of Fuji. 23mm or 35mm f 1.4 or f2? I want to find one can shot portrait and street.thanks again!
I was wondering what lens hood you're using there?
Hi Joe
Thinking of taking my first trip to Japan, what do you think is the best time to go or best time to avoid?
November is my favourite because of autumn colours. But April is most popular for cherry blossom season.
Hi Joe, can share what you think of the lens on the X100F. I have read that is soft at f/2, do you find this and does it affect your style of shooting?
Would it be preferable to go with the X-T20 and 23mm f/2? Thanks!
halo joe, which photometry you usually use?average, spot or multi?
dope, but what simulation do you use for easy edit?
Hey Joe Which lens hood is that? Interested in getting one for my x100 😊
Glad to hear I've helped somewhat! Oh man do I miss Melbourne 😭 Such an amazing city!
How do you remove the preview screen
What’s the lens hood you got here ?
what the default sensitivty on the auto 1?
Great video! Love your Japan Vlogs! What kind of square lens hood are you using on your 100f? Thanks!
Cheers! I love making videos in Japan! You can find the hood on Amazon here: allam.co/jjc-hood
What metering mode do you use with your 100f?
Absolutely loved this vid for sure! what hood lens is that that you have? i dig it.
Isn't the shadow tones for post processing only? Raw shouldn't have any settings as its only camera data..
