Puzzle mattes can matte out reflection and refractions too. Something that cryptomatte doesn't do now, at least from what i see in Redshift's implementation. So there is still use for puzzle mattes. =)
Yes very true - puzzle mattes can definitely compliment cryptomattes when needed. That said, I've really only ever used cryptomattes in production over the past few years - just depends on what you need!
Were you already familiar with cryptomattes before watching this video? If so, how often do you use them?
Cryptomattes are so heavy for AE
I read somewhere that it’s a bug. Uncheck it so it’s not adding file size in the multi pass and use Direct Output.

Too slow and heavy, might be good option, when you need a lot of tweaking, but otherwise puzzle mat or just get things right in 3D :)
Legend thx!
I always known this throughout the years as a clown matte.
Same! It wasn't until a few years ago I learned most people I worked with called them puzzle mattes.
the solution is at 3:53 and last 6 seconds.
