  • The Macintosh IIvx was Apple's last Macintosh II model, and it was the first Mac with a built-in CD-ROM drive. Krazy Ken recently acquired one, but when he opens it up, things go from bad to worse…

Oh, by the way, the IIvx CAN actually run 8.1, with a bit of software sorcery: www.macintoshrepository.org/1518-born-again
So, the old Macintoshes, basically, anything 68k and PPC, ran a lot of the actual system software from ROM, and the OS would just patch it if needed. Originally this was done to run an OS that, frankly, wouldn't have been able to fit into the RAM most consumers had at the time. Memory was *expensive* back then.
Unlike most PCs, where the BIOS mostly just acts as a layer between your OS and the hardware, doing just enough to tell the software how to get itself hooked up with the hardware, the "toolbox" contained a lot of the actual resources the OS used to function. The Macintosh ROM actually shared address lines with the RAM, it was so integral to the system's operation.
What's interesting here is that most of the time when you can't run a later revision of the OS, it's because it relies on something in the "toolbox" that doesn't exist on the older Macs. As it turns out, people figured this out back in the day and started making software that patched the ROM at boot, loading whatever the system needed to run into RAM.
Here's another tool every retro mac owner should have in their arsenal: www.macintoshrepository.org/22236-wish-i-were-
Basically, this thing lies to the software about what your Mac's ID is. It can allow for some shenanigans, I almost got 8.6 running on a Quadra 950 with a powermac card using that, and some other tricks... At least before my house burned down aaand I lost my entire Macintosh collection.

My first color Mac was the Performa version of this computer (Performa 600CD). I loved it. It was my main computer for about 6 years and then for our children for a couple years. I upgraded it with a logic board to the Quadra 650 at one point (a much better computer for much less--the big fiasco that was the IIvx). I still have about a half-dozen caddies for the CD drive.
The old SCSI hard drives used to suffer from a problem called "stiction". You could usually revive one of these by twisting them by holding the drive from above, and twisting along the angle of rotation, to loosen the stuck platters. Once the drive was spinning, it would keep spinning, but let it sit for a couple days, and the lube thickened.

The first Mac I ever bought was a Performa 600CD which was this Mac without the math coprocessor. It had a CD300 with a tray. Everyone was mad at Apple for releasing this Mac a few months prior to the Centris 650, which was the 68040 version of the IIvx. Not only was the Centris faster it was less money by about $200. This was prior to SJ’s return when Apple would just throw Macs at the wall to see what would stick. I just managed a clean install of 7.6 on my LCIII with no CD, just a SCSI Zip drive, the floppy images on my 7.6 CD’s Apple Extras folder and Disk Copy 6. Good times.

We also had a PowerMac 6100 right next to it or at least on the same desk at the front. it was pretty cool to see where technology was going at the time and things were starting to take off as QuickTime movies, CD-ROMs and digital cameras were still very new things

WOW so, I just caught this video 4 years after you made it. But man did you bring back memories for me. I was working at Computer City in Troy, MI. when the Macintosh IIvx and IIvi came out. The IIvi was not available in the US. it was either Europe or Canada only. Nonetheless, we were unboxing the demo unit for the store. We hooked up a pair of Altec Lansing (clamshell style) speakers to the IIvx. Of course we turned those speakers up pretty loud. Pressed the power button and the IIvx powered up and the start up chime rocked the store everyone in the store wanted to gather around to see what the commotion was about. I remember a co-worker saying oh that's just a New Macintosh being started. We loaded a then demo video from Pixar called "Pencil Test." To show off the video capabilities of the IIvx Which later became a part of Pixar's Introduction blimp used at the beginning of each Pixar animated movie. I remember we had to load the IIvx with at least 16 MB of Ram at the time. Often times before we opened the store for the day and closing we would play music CD's in the IIvx. While I liked the IIvx technology, I was still a Quadra 700/IIci guy myself. I never got used to the case of the IIvx which later became the Quadra 650.

The first computer I used was most likely a PowerMac G3 of some speed. Was the family computer until 2004-2005 or so when a CD exploded in the CD drive. It was then replaced with a powermac G4 500 with 2gb of SDRAM, 2 30gb hard drives, 2 video cards, and a DVD drive. It was eventually chucked out and replaced with a iMac G5 in 2011.
The first computer I owned was a Dell Latitude C600 that I got in 2005-2006. Pentium 3 850, 256mb SDRAM, ati rage 128 pro 8mb, 14” 1024x768 screen, and a 10gb hard drive. I then got a dell vostro A860 in 2008. (And then it gets boring from there)
I didn’t have a PowerMac G4 until mid this year, was able to pick up a 500mhz DP machine, with a (sadly dead) Radeon 9000 pro, 128mb ram, 27gb hard drive, and a DVD/RAM. I wasn’t too happy with it’s cosmetic condition so I got another G4 in better condition but this was only a 450 SP machine with 768mb of ram. What set this machine apart was that it had a dual PCB professional capture card made by media100. Both of the machines work fine but I’ll probably gut the DP 500 for parts and then swap the motherboard, CPU and PSU into the machine with the professional capture card.

It’s not very Mac-like with the metal cover - but I have fond memories of playing my Nintendo 64 through the AV card and playing MOD music and even MP3’s. I've seen and owned so much worse that works. I have a quadra that sat outside/in moisture so long all the unpainted metal surfaces are BROWN with rust. Works fine, even the original hard drive. In my experience for some reason, it's like the worse shape i find them in, the more functional they are

I don't even use apple products other than an iphone anymore but this shit is always such a fun watch, I wish I knew what macs I used to use as a kid at school :( It vaguely looked like this, I just remember it being beige with a monitor sitting on it.

I don't understand how Ken stays calm when handling any CRT TVs or monitors. I'm terrified every time I handle one because of the extremely high voltage.

i know of a recording studio in my city that has pretty much every mac ever made in storage. im not positive its all still there because its been a decade or more since ive been there, but they specifically only used apple products, and upgraded every single time a new model came out from the 80s to now. it would be an appletubers dream.

Ken, Thats a pretty rare model with the caddy load CD-ROM drive in it. Most still had the tray load 2x (Apple CD600) in them.

I wish I have used System 7 or 8 back in the day. Got my iMac G4 that runs OS 9 and I can say that it's not that bad. Stability is not great, but the UI is simple and functional. Except Finder - that one is a bit weird there

It's been a while... but I didn't see an Apple logo on the first hard drive that was in the system. From what I remember ye olde Macs have some limitations in that the hard drive has to have Apple firmware loaded. There are 3rd party utilities that can let you do that but I can't for the life of me remember what they are :(

This actually looks and sounds like a Macintosh Centris rather than the IIvx...Is it because I didn’t own the IIvx? Maybe, but the startup chime pointed to either a Quadra or a Centris.
