  • Apple's iTunes software has revolutionized music, but it's time to say goodbye. From macOS 10.15 onward, iTunes will no longer be a bundled application, so Krazy Ken will commemorate it with some nostalgic time travel! Join him as he explores old iTunes software, vintage iPods, and an iPhone 3G.

If the iPod firmware files will be available for restore still (and I'm guessing someone already archived them time and time again), iPods will have no problem surviving, thanks to libgpod-based managers and of course Rockbox. That is the only connection I ever had with the iTunes software.

That other thing next to the headphone Jack is for an external headphone control thing. So like the in-line controls in the more recent wired headphones Apple came out with. You would plug it in and then plug your headphones into the controller thing and now you can control your iPod while it’s in your pocket.

I'm a dual system user, having bought a "thrift shop" Mac SE 4/40, which led to a Powerbook 1400cs. and (somewhat) ended with a 2012 MacBook Pro. (It has "three beep" syndrome and can't be started up.) The last functioning Mac portable is a 1.5Ghz G4 PowerBook, which sputters along in the graphics and video-heavy Internet of today. iTunes works on the PowerBook, but doesn't display track data on Ye Olde Lenovo ThinkPad SL 410. I had issues with trying to get iTunes to work with Windows 10 on a ThinkPad T530, so I uninstalled it in favor of Win 10's Groove Music player.

I still have my iPod mini. Then I eventually got the iPod video for my 15th(?) birthday. I obsessed over that thing. Hundreds and hundreds of discographies “legally” downloaded of all my favorite bands. All of the newest salad fingers videos. I was the coolest. I would meticulously edit all of the meta(?) data on each song in my iTunes library. Song title, band, album name, art, release date etc. don’t have that iPod video anymore. Not the subsequently purchased iPod touches. Hmm... I wonder where they all went.

The nostalgia is real.... I know I probably sound like a neanderthal here, but I actually PREFER to have all of my music stored on my NAS server, and I used iTunes to play it all back across the house. I have always used iTunes, and I have bought and ripped so many CDs and songs that I now have well over 500GB of audio files on my home NAS.
I will probably continue using iTunes, although it will become unsupported, but it is a part of history that I am unwilling to give up.

      I don’t think that’s Neanderthal-ish : )
Rest assured, you may still use the Music app with external locations.

I think it's for the remote control accessory it originally came with.

Late comment, but some hardware required specific versions of Mac OS 9 to be installed IIRC, so you may need to find an iMac G4 specific version of Mac OS 9.2 for it to work. I recommend searching for it on Macintosh Garden or Macintosh Repository. Good luck!

The first iPod I ever used was the 3rd Gen it was on display at Dillards I think or Foleys, they also had a iPod Photo on display that I used another time. A year later I got the iPod Video for my Christmas / Birthday gift since my birthday was a week after Christmas. It was a white 30 GB iPod Video and I used it to watch a few movies on while we went on road trips to Austin where my cousin went to UT.
That extra port was an accessory port. They sold this headset remote that had what looked like an iPod shuffle and has a headphone jack that you could plug the headphones into. So you could clip the remote to your shirt and use it to control your iPod. I learned about it because I got a device that let you broadcast to the radio but the one I got was for the older iPods with accessory port and I could not use it so I had to get a different one that had a headphone jack only.

Awesome. That sounds a lot like my iPod origin story, too.
