*HEY GUYS,* watch this after you're done with this video. Part 2 is now out: bit.ly/clan2DgrXOO
Computer Clan I love that computer I wish I could find one I found a whole bunch of them in high school Under this storage unit I wish I could have bought one of them I play but one of them in elementary school number munchers was the best game and there was a dragon game on there I don't remember what it was but can you play that game on the computer I want to see it for her soundtrack please play it if you can find it
Okkkkkk
The fact the Mac TV's original board didn't chime, could be due to bad capacitors unless the sound was actually set off. Might want to recap and clean the board to ensure it keeps on working and cap goo doesn't eat up the board.
Agreed...It might work for now but that probably what going on as cap due age and don't last for ever
So happy you are enjoying this! The original logic board did work when it left my house, but it need some work. The volume is pretty low. Awesome that you got both boards running! Oh, and that hard drive connector was already broken, but as you discovered, it still works just fine ;)
Hey! Thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate it. And thank you : )
MACnician Highland Park
That’s so cool that both boards were running XD
I thought it was odd when it didn’t power on for me. It worked fine the day before. Store was busy and I didn’t want to disappoint, so I tried the mystic board and drive and it worked!
This video made my day. It was fun watching you explore the games I put on there. They were a few of my childhood faves. I have more vintage, rare Apple stuff. If you’re ever interested in doing another video, just let me know.
MACnician Highland Park thanks! I’d love to stop by again.
MACnician Highland Park PS, should I return the Mystic board since the TV one works?
I had an LC-580 at work and when I saw this thing in a thrift store 10 years later, a wave of nostalgia and envy washed over me.
My school has one sitting in the library. Asked the computer guys if I could do anything with it, sadly they refused :(
Robert Brown where they gonna do anything whit it?
Øyvind Svanevik It’s school property. They can’t just give it away. He’ll probably have to ask administration about it.
Depends on your school. At my school any computers/IT equipment including audio gear is property of the IT department, I asked the sysad if I could take a bunch of junk computers and they said yeah go for it. So basically YMMV I guess Apple admins are bigger assholes :D
Hope they don’t throw it away. I’ll take it if they will.
@@windowsfan95 it's sitting on the shelf for the foreseeable future and nothing else
I remember seeing this briefly at the campus computer store. It was a fairly flawed and short-lived product.
There was another tv-capture-oriented mac that came out a little later, that had better features. I can't remember what it was called. It even did adequate (240p) video capture, which was mind-blowing in the early 90s.
1:10 I think you mean the first black desktop mac. The first Powerbooks (1991) were black as well.
3:05 Wait, wait... LaCie owned Quantum?
[Searching Wikipedia...]
Oh, LaCie was a subsidiary of Quantum! I never knew that!
I recall some Quadra models had video input boards in them yeah. the 840AV if I remember correctly
are you talking about the Power Macintosh G3 all in one? which also does video capture from an external source but I'm not sure if it came with a TV Tuner......
Man, my memory is hazy. I think this was a few years before the G3 came out. 95 or 96 at the absolute latest, because I hadn't set foot on that campus since 1996.
I think it was this Centris: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_Quadra_660AV

Get an up-scaler of some sort to plug in even HDMI stuff into the composite.
I love vintage tech and Macs!
I almost got a chance to get one 20 years ago..... :O
Computer Clan Nice
Hey this is a mac for 1 buck www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Mac-Plus-model-M0001A-Keyboard-Mouse-/132910702048
I just loved the little bluescreen at the intro..
*YOUR_LIFE_IS_YOUR_FAULT*
Farrel Arrayyan XD
Really? I never noticed that LOL
I absolutely loved the video. Its always nice to come across a local computer vlogger. I actually saw this exact system on Craigslist Chicago and was very curious about it.
How have I never seen this channel before and yet it's the best tech channel yet?
Welcome. Glad to have you : )
You know when you're old when you see "Number Crunchers"
New Subscriber! Loved this video. I'm a big Apple fan. Own a lot of Apple products. So watching old videos that remind me of the computers I used in school are amazing. Thank you for this!
You're very welcome. Thanks for tagging along : )
Same
‘It just feels so black’ - CC 2019.
Also I’ve been waiting for this. Also. Congrats on 100K thank you for being my childhood with funny content for me to enjoy.
You’re welcome, but we’re not at 100K yet. Soon ; )
I had one of these that my grandma gave me when she upgraded. It was used as a TV In my parents garage for years. No idea what eventually happened to it.
I never EVER heard or seen such a device. I'm actually proud you own it and you envision some projects with it. I really like your channel a lot. (And I'm not even much of an Apple guy)
I can't wait for part 2
My family bought one of these brand new when I was a kid, and it was my very first computer. Played a lot of SNES on it, as well as Warcraft II/X-Wing/Marathon. Great little computer, and I miss it a lot.
That sounds fun. : )
In my Music Tech class and was just waiting for this to come out!
I'm a simple man, I log into UA-cam, see a new krazy ken uploaded in the past few minutes, and I watch.
Loved the black ADB keyboard from these Macintoshes.
Same. Your profile pic basically shows my reaction to a black mouse.
Computer Clan lol they were beautiful weren’t they?
Back when these came out, I was dying to get the black keyboard/mouse for my Mac II. Ended up scoring a nice NeXT adb keyboard on ebay. Even the power key worked!
Matthew Ghali Nice!
Cool find! And yeah, we played Number Munchers on Apple IIes "back in my day" LOL.
get a digital antenna and one of those converter boxes and you can do tv on that, it's most likely what will need to happen due to the analog shut off and what not
I’ll have to research that. Thanks for the idea.
@@ComputerClan Depending on the area you're in, there might be an analog station still on the air.
A game console with an RF output should also work.
@@dyter424 If there are they are really low powered and usually spanish or religious stations on the lower VHF band. Atlanta has one, ch4, and it is Univision I think. You need a massive outdoor VHF antenna just to get a really fuzzy but watchable signal from it from only 15 miles away. You could also plug in a cable box or satellite box into it, but it would only be 480i.
Todd Stewart I thought about a cable box and was hoping he would do that.
I worked at a Computer Renaissance store in the 90s and I remember we got a batch of these refurbished machines.
Very good video
I recall the labs always having these specific macs we used
What is the song that plays when you put the cd in?
Wow, never even heard of this machine!
That gradient desktop picture you changed to in System 7.6 is similar to a dynamic wallpaper that was added in Mojave.
This was my first computer! Love it
The screws for the back panel were optional locking screws to prevent the board, drive, and RAM from being stolen, like at a school or work environment.
spectrum/Charter cable boxes still support the Coaxial output along with RCA(Y,R,W), We still use RCA CRT Televisions (i love the sound of a warming tube), Dish Network and Direct TV both service boxes with same support. Your Tuner should work granted it works/continues to work
Huh. I know someone with a Spectrum box. I may have to test that. Even though the coaxial connection is the same, do you think the Mac TV's would be able to interpret the signal-given the huge generational gap between devices?
Dear Ken,
I have now have joined you in the honor of owning a Macintosh TV... I got ahold of one myself, and I’m pretty hyped to have it! :D
The old world macs were special. No other computers, including modern macs, have the same charm. Thanks for this video!
You're welcome : )
17:15 "Since I have a huge rack... of CDs...."
This is not gonna end well.
That intro is Epic!
Thank you : )
what a nice video
Is drauga 1 in the opening with all his ssds if so I NEED LINK TO THIS VIDEO
Ask and you shall receive: bit.ly/clan2tQ6Lb4
Maybe it's got a dead battery or leaky cap issues?
I wish my Mac TV had an ACTUALLY Functioning CD Caddy.
Also, How did you get photos on that thing? I’m trying to change the desktop background to a pic of darth vader because it would kinda match the computer color.
You'd need to connect the MacTV to Ethernet, or use a CD. Also, try something not too color-deep.
I'm not sure when Apple started using those screws on the back panel, but I suspect it had something to do with how people were going to a store like CompUSA and sliding the mobo out of Performas to steal the RAM and hard drives out of them back in the day, lol. But yeah, on Macs of that vintage re-seating the motherboard is sometimes the only fix needed to get them working. Try spraying some Deoxit on the contacts and re-seating it a few times to clean up any crud that might be in there.
Wow... I haven't seen one of these in literally years!!
6:42 literally me whenever I power on an old computer
where do i buy this?
Huh, I don’t think my Centris gets enough of the spotlight, so I may just have to do that (possible foreshadowing)
You don’t get the remote that usually comes with the Machintosh TV?
I guess the seller didn’t have it. But it’s okay. I can always get one ; )
Cool.. Subscribed
Thank you. Enjoy your stay : )
I totally forgot about Number Munchers until you demoed it. I miss that game. :)
Any Sony remote from the era works with it. I know, I had one.
I want to watch ur vids 24/7
So how does that TV picture look when you plug in a real computer (like an Amiga) into it? The reason I ask is I'm curious how many samples per raster line it picks up. I don't see an RGB input in the back, which is a bummer. I would expect that board to be doing scandoubling as high resolution computer monitors have much higher horizontal refresh frequency than TV signal. Unless the CRT itself supports a wider horizontal refresh frequency range as well as supporting a much wider raster beam, which would be on the impractical side of things, but then again, what ever was practical about Macintosh TV?
In the upcoming follow-up episode, I can give you a more visual result of how it looks. As a mini spoiler alert, I'll say it looks al little crummy. I tested it with a mini game console, and there's a lot of macro blocking (it looks kinda pixel-y). Is that normal for RCA??? Or is this particular product displaying the video poorly?
Wow I forgot about number munchers, I use to play the old Apple 2 version all the time in computer class. The version you where playing looks way newer then the one I played lol.
Yeah, old tuners won't work, No analog broadcast tv - an old vcr or any rf device would normally work. Might have an issue with signal stability.
It's called a VCR, not a "VHS player" (since they can record, too, not just play).
Not all of them could record some of the cheaper ones only played
wowww this is awesome
You’re excitement is delightful. You feel about vintage computers how I feel about vintage synthesisers and samplers, like the amazing 68000 based Ensoniq EPS16+ (check out The Daydream Sound on UA-cam if you want to here it at its best!)
But yeah, that childlike glee is priceless. Never grow up dude! I do feel that kind of glee for some vintage computers like my recent Amiga 500+ aquisition, but that is again quite musically based. For example, the Amiga had 4 channels that could play basic waveforms or PCM samples in crunchy 8 but glory, this would be enough but with a special piece of assembler code (that people off the internet taught me!) you can ring modulate any two channels for weird doctor who noises!
And I can then use these sounds in my music. I guess you get off on video editing, codecaphilia? that’s cool.
So yeah, anyhow, thanks for the great vid.
Thank you, and I'm glad we're on the same page! And yes, I do love video. I actually test drove Premiere 1.0 in another episode, and I have a "part 2" of Premiere 1.0 coming soon! Here's the episode, by the way. I think you'll like it: bit.ly/clan2K7Hpyx
Cool! I’m planning a new channel for the year that focuses on obsolete (yet amazing) computer and Synthesizer Sound/music production. Once I’m up and running, perhaps we could do a small collab? Thanks!
Almost got this unit back in 1996 Used unit. All memories how sweet
Can you get the anniversary macintosh and review it
That is not a microphone above the Apple logo. It is the manual CD eject hole to remove a caddy if there is no power or a stuck caddy. The Macintosh TV did not have a microphone.
Mactracker says it has a microphone. : s
Are in Chicago or Chicago area if you are where?
Try putting Ferazel's Wand (or at least the demo for it) on there! It's a real fun game from my childhood that I almost never hear anyone ever talk about!
I love videos about old Apple computers and software. I never saw the Macintosh TV for real. Not sure if it was available here in Italy.
You got the Mac version of Number Munchers!
Wow, they had one of these in the computer lab at my university. I wanted to steal it... It was so sexy, the speakers sounded great and the trinitron screen was simply unobtainable on my student budget.
Im sure someone else has mentioned this, but you are no doubt aware that there was a black Apple Mac model in the 90's that being the black Performa 5400. My dad owned it back in the day.
mind blowing
where are you from?
maybe connect this to a yagi and try to analog tv DX with it, maybe you still have some low-powered analog tv stations around you
21:41 you jus- ok, that's just me everytime with cheep plastic, I just break it by "accident". xD
Wow cool!
I actually saw one of these guys for free on Facebook a few weeks back. Unfortunately it was two hours away from me and it was broken, otherwise I would have taken it because I'm masochistic enough to do a second 68k Mac recap despite hating doing one on my LC II.
Beautiful MacTV. I've always wanted one, never been willing to pay $900 for one. Maybe someday...
I bought a Macintosh-TV with the same problems. I just had to put a new battery in it and re-seat the logic board and it worked. I really like the display. The plastics are fragile in my MacTV too. Easy to break. My CDROM drive broke and I could not find a used one so I use an external SCSI Apple i300 CDROM drive. I really like the look of this MacTV too. I also have a Performa 575 with Mystic logic board. It would be nice if you could add Ethernet to this MacTV original logic board. Macfixer.com is a website that your can download software and games from. Supports old Mac web browser. You can install and run Nortons Utilities on this computer and perform a health check.
Fellow Macintosh TV owner... also purchased with bad logic board, have not tried troubleshooting it yet
its a virus
Nice!
The sound is low due to electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard that should be replaced.
(I already replaced the ones on my Macintosh TV. It worked fine.)
It looks the exact same as the Macintosh Perfoma 550 except it is black in said of beige
I used to love playing Carmen San Diego on my ASUS Windows 98 laptop.
you might be krazy ken, but I'm the one watching this at 11:50pm while not being able to use tech at home
Cool! Also, most VCRs will output RF to the Mac TV's coax input!
Good point. Would that be of higher quality than the RCA jacks?
@@ComputerClan It should be worse quality haha. BUT, you get to test out the tuner! I'm not sure if there are any analog stations left for rabbit ears to pick up here in the US.
It's a Christmas miracle!
wait a minute... i had a performa 630cd that we had a tv card in...
what's next after this Ken?
Watch the video and find out…
A minor nitpick: That "original" hard drive was actually a replacement pulled from a LaCie external drive at some point, as indicated by the LaCie label.
Also, the Mystic board, which comes from the LC/Performa 575, is a better board overall. 33MHz LC 040 Processor vs 16MHz 030, more RAM (both boards are currently maxed out), and better video (up to 16-bit color on the computer side vs. being limited to 8-bit indexed color on the computer side.) Obviously, you do miss out on the TV functions, but the Mac TV could only grab still images from the TV side anyway.
Depending on where you live at, you'll probably not be able to pick up any TV signals on the Mac TV's Analog tuner, as many countries have switched over to all-digital broadcasts. Here in the US, the majority of analog broadcasts were stopped in 2009, and most remaining analog broadcasts stopped a couple years ago. There are still some "translator" channels in some parts of the US, which were originally scheduled to have switched off already, but apparently this was delayed until 2021.
Ooh, thanks for that info. As for the TV part… yeah, I won't have much luck with analog cable, but in the follow-up episode, I'll still experiment with hooking up a DVD player and a mini game console. Possible for a second follow-up, I may try converting digital to RF, and see if I can receive it through the tuner.
this reminds of something rare I'm looking for. The Toshiba Infinia 72xx desktop
You didn't show The Grouch in action! Toss something you don't want (like an empty folder) into the trash and select "Empty Trash" from the "Special" menu. Be sure the volume is turned up first.
It's Oscar from Sesame Street
I feel like Owen Grady is teaching me about my new find and for that I am subbing
Me:watching tv while drinking coffee
Ken:watching tv with a mac
Me:spits coffee in to the logic board.
Me:YOU DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO DO THIS WIZARD SHIT
Okay?? Haha.
@@ComputerClan thank you for actually replying to me.keep making good videos
im new here, but was that druaga1 in the intro????
Thanks for coming by! I hope you enjoy your stay. Yes, that was Druaga1. That clip is from a collab episode. You can watch it here: bit.ly/clan2tQ6Lb4
Enjoy!
is it possible to update Macintosh TV to os 9 ??????
The highest it supports is 7.6 (which I will address in a follow-up). I'm sure there's some hack to get OS 9 on there, but if I recall correctly, OS 9 is PowerPC-only. The Macintosh TV is 68K-based. It may be impossible to do.
OMG i Remember Number Munchers 2 such a cool game for teaching math I miss math blasters as well was pretty fun to play
Oh yeah… Math Blasters. Fun.
Lol should do a retro gameplay of math blasters
That might be fun…
You should bring back memories do so many 90’s users lol
How much are these worth ? I have a brand new setup never used sitting in my basement and honestly thought it was worthless.
How new is “brand new”? Mint in the box? If so, you could likely get AT LEAST $1,000+ for it.
Original box. Original packaging never opened, Sitting covered in dust for nearly a decade. I cannot believe this
Are you serious?! That's amazing. There's currently a USED Mac TV on eBay for $1,300 (which I think is high). So I can safely say you'll get a MINIMUM $1,000-$1,500 for an unopened rare Mac.
Had it posted on kijiji Toronto for 3 hours and sold. Can not believe it, your video just helped me out big time
Zook Inthe6ix wow! Nice! If I may ask, how much did you get for it?
15:02 Looks it’s the illiminati!
I got one thing to say to you if you want to get the analog TV to part like the tuna part to work just get one of those analog composite video to analog video signal things that you can set the channel to and then you can set the channel on the TV and it will work till if you want to get it to work just plug like a composite video into the tuner or the the transmitter and have a cable connected to it or if you have a RF booster you can make it Wireless so good luck :)
It does anything in here that doesn't say anything right it's probably because of my microphone because I said it all to my microphone so I can text it out for me sorry
Oh my God it’s been two years since I posted that it felt like a year ago like yesterday Jesus Christ
I'd bet the 7.6.1 drive would boot up on the other board. It won't have the TV software on it though.
Although I don't like using apple devices, I like seeing old devices and how both work
@8:16 The Grouch lives in the trash can and sings to you when you dump items in the trash. It's Oscar from Sesame Street
I remember we used to prank our teacher because she had the external apple speakers, make a blank file on the desktop, crank them to max volume and when she would throw it out "OHHHH IIIII LOOOOVE TRASH!" incredibly loud! Good times.
This looks similar to the AIO models of Performa Macintoshes my middle school history class had.
The case shape was similar to several models. Yes.
Yay I been waiting for this video also can it run Doom!?!??
dta box and a powered television antenna would make it into a working tv on channel 3 or 4
I may have to try that in a "part 3" episode. Thanks : )
Dude how did you get one of these Macs
If I told you, I would ruin the magic.
(Craigslist)
I hope the TV tuner works on that Mac
It works!, wow, that’s awesome
TIL Chris Pratt is really into vintage tech
At 6:08 that's a parallel port
