The most triggering thing in this video was that out-of-nowhere Raid Shadow Legends ad. Great theming
I almost choked my food on that, nice scheme samus 😂
For reals 😂
@Shallex But boy do they pay UA-camrs. Imagine how much he's getting paid to do this every video.
downvote because of Raid Ad
I know its a scam game, but ff course I'd do the ads if i was a youtuber
Almost feel off my damn chair with the "Bleed" reference. Brilliant!!! LOL
5:47 great... I just burst out loud laughing at work. My co-workers are now staring at me.
I lol'd too. xD
Just subscribed because that bleed joke... The guy is a genious 😂🙌
22nd like
Demo doesn't count you didn't include the fabled "St. Anger" snare.
TONG!
TONGTONGTONGTONGTONGTONGTONGTONG
"how to trigger Glenn without triggers"
I'm with Glenn on this. This shit is fucking bullshit. I want to hear an actual fucking drummer playing an actual fucking drumkit.
*play bass*
“Sponsored By RAID Shadow Legends” should be your next album title.😂🤘
The jokes didn’t make me laugh because I have no soul, but the surprise Raid Shadow Legends sponsor got a big laugh out of me 😂

Great video Samus, I really enjoy the educational content alongside the regular videos you do - I think these videos are almost more important than your other content, because more often than not the theory and technical side of drumming can be thrown under the rug. I feel like this content is a great way for you to branch into different aspects of musical content and keep the viewers interested - and keep your channel fresh and innovative. Furthermore, you have a great way of explaining these concepts, and so it makes the experience all round great to watch!
Samples blended with a natural kit are absolutely the way to go. No question about it. The problem is qauntinization/time aligning, that ruins the natural feel. Not everyone has a mahogany studio built and blessed by Christ with 40 different snares too choose from, most of us just record in the basement and don’t have a million dollar budget. With proper tight playing, great feel, and samples enhancing in my opinion is no different than adding a pedal too a messa. It’s essentially manipulating your natural sound into a finalized polished product. great example is the black album. Amazing drum sound, but was enhanced with samples to achieve the final result.
I think the way to go is knowing how to properly tune drums along with some time spent to understand eq & compression. A big studio and a huge budget shouldn't be convenient excuses for justifying not putting in some work. Getting a good tone before setting up a mic will solve a lot of issues from the start - if the drums sound like crap to start with, there's only so much you're going to get out of the natural sound. I have far from an ideal set up and can get a pretty good sound and as I keep learning, it keeps getting better.
IMO having to rely on samples just means you didn't or didn't want to put in the work to devolop YOUR own sound.
I like to look at it another way - considering as using electronic samples gives you a pretty large selection of sounds, consider all the possibilities for exploring sounds beyond the traditional metal template. Obviously everyone jokes about using them to trigger fart noises or Glenn fricker (which is absolutely fucking brilliant, I'd love to see Glenn used as a pre-breakdown), but blending real drums with more exotic sounds rather than just heavily edited real drums opens up a whole new avenue for progressive and experimental metal. Obviously it's not going to be useful for some situations like OSDM or raw black metal, but in more modern genres it could have incredible potential.
I don't even play drums, but this maniac autodidact polymath is me (on a timeline where i do stuff and have hair).
Dude thank you so much for your content and hard work. I can't even tell you how valuable your vids are in this crazy time. You make the world better. Bless you and yours.
It's always nice to see Sam upload
Cheers for this video it came in handy, I find aslong as you can play all the parts perfectly it doesn't matter what the drums sound like.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing this!
Great thanks for sharing this!!
Sweet. Slowly I am leaning drums on my cheapo Simmons electric setup. Good work mang
Oow how I would pay the both of you for Glenn to make a reaction video of this video. You make good points my dude.
definitely keep the educational stuff coming. i find them interesting even though i can barely beat an egg, let alone drums.
How to trigger without triggers? I remember seeing a video 'playing bleed with rubber chickens'... Triggered!
Great info. Thanks
drum replacement has been a standard for recording for so long now.
I'm not a fan of the sound myself, but it does make life so much easier!
luckily i like a big old school room mic'd drum sound, so i can get something i like pretty easily with just 2 mics, compression, and EQ. and reverb, i loves me a lot of verb 😂
Sweet bro 🤘🥁🤘
Was gonna make a Glenn comment but then he you did it for me. Thanks Bud!
Just love the honest approach, you usually take. It is easy to criticize someone for using triggers or god forbid (do I really dare to say that?) E-drums 🤮. Just kidding, play them myself😋. But the work and time you invest is simply not visible for us, since we only see the end result in the form of a 5-10 minute video. So thanks for the videos and keep your style 😊
Great video, Sam 👌👌
Dude, this help me a lot.
I put samples over my drum tracks sometimes because I use my phone to record and sometimes it doesn't sound great
Dude, really that is possible? You record it with a simplle voice recorder app and then replace the stuff on pc?
Teach me master
@@keyboardcarrot its not overly hard, all you have to do is record on the voice recorder app, save it, transfer it from the phone to PC, pull up the DAW, pull up the drum vst, or samples, then match them up with drum hits on the drum track. Sometimes you can't get it precise unless you alter the tempo on certain measures, the tempo doesn't have to be altered very much at all though. I guess I could also make a video sometime.
that's some Burzum level recording
@@KeepTheGates you must be sheltered
0:02 ladies and DJENTleman :)
Every time I watch your videos it makes me want to get back into drumming.
Anywho, was wondering if you would be willing to put out a video of you doing a drum solo with just the pure sound of the drums, no triggers or fake triggers. Every video I've ever heard you play there's always been triggers, and it's starting to get me triggered, so let's avoid getting triggered and not use the triggers so we can hear a triggerless drum solo. Great!
Great video thanks!
Just downloaded raid with your link Sam 🤘🤘🤘
SAMUS! Thank you for doing this! This trigger, not trigger war has to end finally! XD everyone's using sims and sound replacements these days. But replacing/adding sounds to you drums to cut more through the mix.... IS UNACCEPTABLE! (not) xD
I remember waaay back in the dusty dirt poor days, we used to tape quarters to the kickdrum with wood beaters...I thought you were going THERE! LOYLZZ
Oh yurr!!!!!! I am Susan’s egg not green egg! Lol
Love the educational content too it’s great!
great drummer with smart working style
What would be a good video I think would be for you to do a comparison to see how close you can get with mixing the drums naturally, to the EZ samples and to maybe even do a blindfold and reveal it at the end or something. To see how much work actually goes into getting those sounds . 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
confused 500+ bpm kick bass drummer noises
There’s also a nifty stick on bass drum patch with metal inside, if you turn your beaters around or modify them a bit you get a nice cheap acoustic trigger click. I used to glue coins to my bass drum to get a trigger sound 😆
Oh god I tried the coin trick before... Sounded shit, I had to tape a coin to the head and the beater to get any real change. Then again, it was tuned for jazz and I'm a less than brilliant drummer so who knows lol
That would be a nice change. I bet it sounds good doing quarter notes.
Every product that needs in depth explanations of how to use their product needs 66Samus explaining how to use it.
I used an Alesis D4 back in 1992 to trigger using Mics when recording a demo at Prairie Sun Recording studios.
4:30 didnt know eddie vedder played drums
This opens up a whole new perspective on how your drums can sound live!! Wanna sound like you sounded on your album, with all those crazy effects? Yes!
And then when there's a technical issue live and all that stuff stops working and your left sitting behind your $6000 DW kit that sounds like a bunch of wet cardboard boxes....
There was a sensible chuckle at that segue into the sponsored content haha
Thank you 66SAMUS
"And no this video is not sponsored by Drumagog, (Samus giggles) it's sponsored by Raid: Sha"....NOOOOOOOOOOO
Ooh yurr you learn something new everyday
nice.... all these years in our studio we where drawing midi by hand to blend drums FOR DAAAAYS on albums.... i do be feeling like green egg and ham on the plate.... :)))))))))))))
This one triggered me soooo much!
Another cool tip... you don't even need a full microphone set. You can use the cheapest clip-on mics (piezo mic) and fix them to the head. Then you can fall down the rabbit-hole of hybrid drumming / DIY electronic drums....
I just realized, sam has *22* in. bass drums 😯😯😯 TWENTY TWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
2.54 times the length of his dick!
Richard Harrold OHHH YUUUR😆
@@russellknollenberg5336 at least, that's my hypothesis as to what 22 means, especially as we've heard his missus repeating it with equal glee...
Richard Harrold souds about right
Glenn would not kill you for one reason, Time !
if you aint got the time, triggering is a great way to save that extra time to focus on more importante issues (like cavs) . I also prefer natural drums to samples but based on time and drumming skills, most times I end up replacing toms and kicks
For snares i usually do an average of all takes and end up choosing or copy-pasting the best of each take ... but it always comes down to "how much time you have"
Stay Safe!
I'm a live engineer, so I don't have that option, but when I do recordings, if something sounds REALLY bad, I'll replace it with a sample. I like to keep it organic and usually can get the sound I want by compression and EQ. I'm not a recording studio and I'm at the mercy of whatever gear bands bring to a gig. Luckily most of them have decent gear and I get good results doing live shows. It's pretty cool what you can do using the existing signal to be your 'trigger'. I've had to do it a couple of times. I even took a sample of another bands kick drum and just made one on the fly and use that to replace another bands kick in their live recording because it just sounded bad! The band didn't even notice the difference lol
I’m learning!
People: triggering drums is cheating because you're replacing the sound... also people: love that pedal on your guitar, it makes it sound totally like a completely different guitar!
Not the same
Meh not exactly...
"Glenn is going to fucking kill me". Yes, he will Samus XD
Good tutorial mate, but I suggest you buy SSD Trigger 2, it is miles better than drumagog, especially for extremely fast stuff. Also, included samples are the best on this world. Cheers.
Fuck yea....well said
Samus in the thumbnail looks like a custom character in oblivion
0:01 General Kenobi!
i love how the moment he says its sponsered by raid he starts laughing
its almost become a rick roll at this point
I've had green eggs and ham before and you know what... it's great! haha!
Best sponsor segway ever!.
Just curious, how come you’re still using EZdrummer 2? SD3 has been out for quite a while and I use that to trigger my real drums. Maybe you should do a demo of it if you can at some point, of trying it with your setup! 🤘🏻 rock on dude
Your the best drummer with jared dines
I currently do a dynamic split, which converts a drum track to midi and I replace it that way. I would love a drum replacement plugin, though.
Triggering Drums without Triggers!? Just make it say "I like Hip Hop". Done. Where is my money?
Looking at the sensitivity settings, can those be inverted? Make it < instead of >. Would make sense as a feature.
What's Samus' favourite fret on a guitar?
*22!!!*
maybe not original but hey I like it
Hey Samus I decided to subscribe to the channel, follow you on Instagram and like your page of Facebook after I really like your videos and your phenomenal talents as a drummer. Plus I love the 8BitDrummer as much as you too. So great videos there man.... SEX!
Well it is sound replacing because you replace the sound who is already there, or sometimes blend the two together.
Get a Scott ian signature king V. it's one of the best flying Vs out there
Samus yes the triggering is useful and easier for your schedule...but...here’s an idea...why not take a little bit of time and get he best mix you can, and that can be a new video: how fast can you mix your kit for an album ready tone. Like the one hour song challenge. But instead, one hour drum mix challenge. And at the end of it, you’d have a preset for your drums that you can use for everything, and we get a entertaining video on how to mix drums quickly 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
ive been interested in used drum triggers to control gates on my drum tracks to help cut down on bleed
Trigger every drum, and then mix sounds funny way (bass is snare etc) or just replace sound with cartoon sounds :D
Omg that segway
Please do rossana cover with original drum beat
Can you react or watch the drum playthrough for darkest spawn from lorna shore
Just buy the bass drum pads with the metal sheet inside it, put I mic on it. Good enough haha.
xd I'm not even a drummer, I'm a guitarist, but I love samus' content...
I don't play jack shit but I'm still here...
I’ve never been able to get drumagog to work well and switched to slate trigger. Maybe I’ll take another look at it
Just like Dave Lombardo
Can you trigger these samples live while you're playing? Or can you only trigger them after you've recorded an audio track?
You know what, I am green eggs and ham on a plate today. Thanks for asking, Sam.
4:26 Can that exist as a full song, please? That'd be GREAT
Maybe you should use Bleed Reduction on the livestreams to reduce the amount of people requesting it......huehuehue
Who gave you the link?!?! AHHHHHHHHH! SEX
Bonus points for your Karma with each Beat Blast you play on this channel!
How exactly do you manage to achieve a multitrack recording in your DAW? Like every Mic has an own channel in the recording, rather than just one audiotrack in the end? Been struggling with this for months and a simple solution would be great. SEX
5:44 LOL XD
Why yes, i am green eggs and ham on a plate. Thank you for asking
All slam metal bands should be informed about this
unexpected sudden ad time hahaha XD.
can somebody explain the 'twentytwooo' thing? new to the channel
Suh dude. It's 6am in the peg.
That second snare ROFL
Ohhh yurrrrr!
I died at DAW🤣🤣🤣
As a producer, I was about to get *pissed* at his producer joke until he said it was a joke lmfao
Oooooh yurrrrrr!
OHHHHH YURRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
Here's a challenge for you. Do your top 10 Metallica drum track covers using just a bass drum with one pedal, one snare, one hihat and one crash. You can rearange the songs, so your own instrumentation, do whatever you want, but use only bass, snare, hihat and 1 crash. Make it interesting, make it relevant.
