Not even close. Drumming is much more physicall and the extent you can do with triggers to make you basically not need to drum is insane. You can set it so when you hit the drum once it doubles the sound so 1 hit makes 2 hits, or you can make the sound increase hard enough that you can just tickle the bass drum and it will produce a good sound, no need for technique, my little sister could play that.
@@jensloetzsch I was a bit more ignorant when I made th comment, but sometimes people do use the triggers to that extent, otherwise I don't think they're a bad thing, especially if it's a good sound, you don't have to tune ypur bass drum pretty much
@@ConeTheBoss559 I currently have a trigger setup that I use on my bass drum, for the exact reasoning you just mentioned. I substitute strength with triggers since I have Multiple Sclerosis. Doesn't affect my arms nearly as much as my legs, so on my good days I don't need it, but when my strength fails me, and I'd still like to play the drums - I definitely use triggers to avoid the requirement of strength.

I'll share my story. I don't play extreme metal, but rather boring stuff like hard/alternative rock and at most fast-pace heavy metal. I found myself in a situation where all my bandmates from all my bands upgrade their sound and make the music sound better and better and even though my drums are really good, I can't go much further. When I go out on stage it often turns out the sound engineer didn't really get the drum sound right more of then than they do. As a result I migrated to a full electronic drum set with just the bass drum being an acoustic one (doesn't move on stage and it's a 24" and it has to look good after all) and I have that triggered to the module too. It made a world of difference - no feedback issues on stage and we can balance the sound and hear everything exactly how we want it to be, I have perfect and consistent sounds every time and we sound great. On cheating - there's no cheating in music. After all we're all musicians and even if you press buttons on a drum machine once in a while and just sit there, as long as it's for the sake of music I'll never judge.
The band's called Nash'te Hora. On youtube we got only 1 video up from April last year. It's a Bulgarian band - our songs are mostly in Bulgarian, but if you wanna hear 2 english songs - they start at the 25 min mark. If you were looking for an electronic drum set video demo, you're out of luck sorry. When you have to share a drumset with another band most drummers tend to insist they bring their own ac. set.
Your videos are always on point Wanja! In the sound comparison section, the difference is even more extreme when you add distorted guitars and bass lines. Untriggered bass drums practically disappear.

First, thank you so much, I also have the roland TM-2 module and since I am a really lazy person I didn't read the manual (so I tried to adjust the threeshold by changing the sensitivity) so thank you again, because now i know how to install and use the triggers properly! And second, I think triggers are useful, they can improve your sound a lot in a live situation (using them alone or even in a mix with the bass drum), and can be used in a studio to create a gate to control bleed during a recording (Glen Fricker's great idea!).

Nice tutorial. Agreed on every aspect of what you said. I can add some more info from drummer / sound engineer perspective. Triggering kick drum @ live performance is almost standard this times in metal music. Lets face it - you don't need any dynamics on your kick drum in death or black metal (and many other genres) - its almost binary 0 or 1 in this matter. When you hit - it has to be consistent in volume and clearly audbile with nice SNAP attack. Try to get good snappy, clear, consitent kick drum sound with kick mic on small stage in club, where bass player has his 6x10 cab cranked up, which makes bass drum shell resonate. Of course you can use fast gate, compression and envelope filter, but believe me - this will work until you start to play fast double kick, when gate never closes, its one big muddy HUM of bass frequency, no attack, no snap, your kick drum simply disappear in whole mix. Side chaining kick with bass guitar doesn't help at all. If you use trigger - there is no problem at all (using it on bass drum). Not to mention you dont have to worry about bass drum tuning. In studio you have plenty of time, silent room, great audio gear etc. You can dial very good kick sound using mic and sub-mic mixed together. What about volume consistency in fast double kick parts? Well in such enviorment you can compress signal really hard without side effects (opposite to live performance) and it solves that problem. It is common to replace kick drum track with premade samples after recording anyway, just to get best sound that fits good in the mix. People (who have little knowledge) consider triggering is cheating because they're confusing it with MIDI output from drum module and quantizing hits to actual tempo map (in DAW after recording or in real time via drum module with tempo map and quantize option). You don't even need drum module to do that in those days in realtime. In such situation (quantizing hits to grid) it is cheating and everyone will agree on that.

I was totally lame in this subject but this video brings it closer to me. Definitely subscribing the channel. I would compare triggers to camera lens that sharpens the image (in this case the Hits), not cheating for sure.
I just bought a TM-2 with the RT-30K. I need triggers because I have a light foot and always have had a light foot. I was born with cerebral palsy and whilst it doesn’t affect my whole body severely it affects my legs pretty bad. I have little to no ankle motion in them and I’m having to play flat footed at first but I’m getting the hang off letting my feet just kinda do their own thing. I can’t wait to try them out and use this video as a guide! Thanks brother it’s appreciated!

From an engineers stand point it’s nice to use both a mic on the kick and a trigger. You can blend the two sounds together and get even cooler kick sound with the depth of the acoustic kick and the attack of the trigger.
I was thinking about trying to use both trigger and a microphone I bought. I'm new to this so I'm trying to get a good loud sound and figure out how to hookup the audio to whatever speaker, module, mixer I need to. I've been buying all of that here and there as money I can spare for it. Always in need of advice from anyone kind enough to share with me. Thankful always. Blessed.
You should check out the "Pedaltrigger" triggers that you attach directly onto the pedal, similar to the Axis e-kit system. They have a version for the Demon Drive double pedal. If it works as well as I hope, it could remove all triggering problems and should make for a very short setup time, seeing as it isn't at all dependent on the bass drum.

Hey man. Another great video. Wanted to ask. How this compares to Steven Slate 2 Trigger and I am not sure if you are familiar with that but all I care is live setting and want to get a nice kick sound
I am not familiar with that but I am not a great fan of using software too much. PCs can cause many troubles live and I think a trigger + drum module is far more reliable. Also it looks like it is more an application for studio and I am not sure if it would work live.

Do you use the focusrite 2gen Interface? :) I own the Roland TM-2 too, still trying to adjust the basedrumsound more into direction "real"...There are so many Settings to choose. Anyway, think this is a really good tool. Keep up with your great videos.
I think it is not 2nd but first gen but I am not sure. If you want a "real" sound you can try recording your own bass drum and use it as a sample for the module.

Hello I have a problem with my RT30K and my TM2 module ... despite the tightening of my kick drum its padding, I have no sound when I hit gently (a little but not when I hit really light ...) I have yet set 35 senses and 0 theshold ... it's normal ? otherwise what should i do? thank
Hey, maybe someone can help me. I have the Roland td 25 Module and a Yamaha dtx 50 trigger for my bassdrum. I have the sensitivity all the way up and the curve set to loud, but there is still volume dynamics. This leads to normal hits sounding very loud and softer hits sounding standard loud. How can I achieve that it actually sounds the same? It's very important due to my heel toe technique, where the second hit always is a bit weaker than the first one
Awesome tutorial man! Great video! To bad some guy started playing drums in the background haha. I think you missed a reason why triggers are needed in death metal, and that is because guitar players and bass players need to hear the bass drum clearly during blast beats, otherwise they will get lost, especially in high tempos, where you can't really hear the bass drum.
A good thing to note is that the TM2 is terrible for using DDRUM triggers on, they worked fine with my TD-4 module, but with the TM-2, even with the sensitivity maxed and threshold at 0, you cant get a reliable trigger sound. Unless you have really shallow bass drum hoops and can squash the foam completely onto the bass drum head.. you show up to a show with a clown who uses sound dampening rings on the front of the bass drum and you're cooked.

Ich würde in dem Fall empfehlen, zwei Bassdrums zu verwenden und immer genügend Spannung und Dämpfung. Dann sollte es ohne Probleme gehen. Auf einer Bassdrum sicher auch nicht unmöglich, aber schwieriger. Footblaster oder OnTrigger könnten da eine gute Alternative sein.
@@TheLeviathan13 Mit Laser Triggern sollte es kein Problem sein, mit einer Bassdrum zu spielen. Je nachdem von welchen Laser Triggern genau du sprichst, kann es aber in sehr seltenen Fällen Probleme mit Licht auf der Bühne geben, wenn z.B. Sonnenlicht auf die Bühne scheint oder ein Strobo hintern den Drums steht.
Better ask Roland support about that :D But you can use custom samples with the module so there should be no need for additional EQ. Output is normal jack cable so you need a DI box when you want to have balanced xlr. For recording it is enough to just plug it into my interface without DI.
When playing live, how should I go about adjusting my output volume? I feel like I have a good mix in the rehearsal room, but when we played our last show, the SE told us to turn down the trigger volume. Thanks!!
WTF? :D Normally the SE can turn up or down the volume of the trigger as he/she sees fit. That's what a mixing desk is for. So as long as the signal from your drum module is not clipping, the rest is usually up to the SE.
The clip where I am playing is taken from another video from my channel - I was just jamming and thought it would sound kick ass to play some sort of marching rhythm with the double bass while blasting. gene Hoglan also does this a lot!

I don' know if there is a website for that - I used the stock sounds on my module for a while and later put the bass drum sound from the last Negator album on my module. You can also record one strong bass drum hit and then EQ it until it sounds good and then cut it in a way that the main attack is really at the beginning of the sample. I think the TM-2 needs the sample to have certain specifications (like sample rate etc) - check out the manual for that. So you export your selfmade sample with the required specs and then put it on a SD card wich you put into your module and it sould work.

I don't do it on purpose. And it only happens at the beginning of a double bass roll and when I do short groups of notes. When I play for several bars my feet don't swivel around - I think it is more my feet trying to get into the movement and finding the right position.
Pretty much what you're doing then is dropping the leg (relaxing) to get a note and rebound, and then pointing the ball of the foot (tensing) to get the in between notes? When you're working on speed with this technique, what things do you think about in your technique to keep rebound going? Where do you avoid putting pressure with muscles, and where do you intend to put it? Thanks for taking the time to reply, been trying to nail this technique all weekend.
the threshold seems a bit high for me, personally I put mine at about 18. If I was using a trick laser trigger, I'd have the threshold on as low of a setting as possible without sacrificing the feel for the slower parts.
You don’t need a module for the on trigger right? The guy I emailed said I didn’t so now I’m confused He said I could plug them into my interface throw on headphones and hear them
There is a setting where I can delay the signal a bit but when I have it on zero I don't notice any delay. It also depends on the sample I use - it is important that the peak is right at the beginning of the bass drum sample.

I say use triggers why not just set them up in a way that the dynamics are "the same" as when playing acoustically. It's not cheating but some drummers get lazy and don't hit the bass drum consistently with a trigger and that leads to bad habits. + a little dynamics in fast runs is still okay

I don't consider drum triggering(especially for bass drums) cheating. it only makes drumming easier(that's what technologies are made for) plus, we ain't l living in the past(80's) anymore. keep up or fall behind. This is a good education video and thanks.

I also use the rt30 trigger on my bass drum ,they are great triggers.
From an engineers stand point it’s nice to use both a mic on the kick and a trigger. You can blend the two sounds together and get even cooler kick sound with the depth of the acoustic kick and the attack of the trigger.
I was thinking about trying to use both trigger and a microphone I bought. I'm new to this so I'm trying to get a good loud sound and figure out how to hookup the audio to whatever speaker, module, mixer I need to. I've been buying all of that here and there as money I can spare for it. Always in need of advice from anyone kind enough to share with me. Thankful always. Blessed.

You should check out the "Pedaltrigger" triggers that you attach directly onto the pedal, similar to the Axis e-kit system. They have a version for the Demon Drive double pedal. If it works as well as I hope, it could remove all triggering problems and should make for a very short setup time, seeing as it isn't at all dependent on the bass drum.

I have one question, for you or any kind person willing to share: Is there ANY difference between this kind of triggering and electronic pads regarding input lag/latency (even in miliseconds)? My purpose is as first option use the drum module's MIDI out to my laptop PC running Superior Drummer 3 for triggering those kits. If anyone shows me some light and points that lag/latency is present, I would go to the second option: load custom samples to the module. (PD: I use the laptop PC for other instruments, etc so it's necessary) I'll be attentive to your response. THANK YOU!

Usually it works by turning sensitivity up to maximum and if you can choose different volume urves you should go for the loudest.

Hey man. Another great video. Wanted to ask. How this compares to Steven Slate 2 Trigger and I am not sure if you are familiar with that but all I care is live setting and want to get a nice kick sound
I am not familiar with that but I am not a great fan of using software too much. PCs can cause many troubles live and I think a trigger + drum module is far more reliable. Also it looks like it is more an application for studio and I am not sure if it would work live.

The goal is to play Black/death metal on the kit :D
I think you could plug in the trigger module into an active speaker without needing a mix panel.

Do you use the focusrite 2gen Interface? :) I own the Roland TM-2 too, still trying to adjust the basedrumsound more into direction "real"...There are so many Settings to choose. Anyway, think this is a really good tool. Keep up with your great videos.
I think it is not 2nd but first gen but I am not sure. If you want a "real" sound you can try recording your own bass drum and use it as a sample for the module.

Hello I have a problem with my RT30K and my TM2 module ... despite the tightening of my kick drum its padding, I have no sound when I hit gently (a little but not when I hit really light ...) I have yet set 35 senses and 0 theshold ... it's normal ? otherwise what should i do? thank

Hey, maybe someone can help me. I have the Roland td 25 Module and a Yamaha dtx 50 trigger for my bassdrum.
I have the sensitivity all the way up and the curve set to loud, but there is still volume dynamics. This leads to normal hits sounding very loud and softer hits sounding standard loud. How can I achieve that it actually sounds the same? It's very important due to my heel toe technique, where the second hit always is a bit weaker than the first one

I think you missed a reason why triggers are needed in death metal, and that is because guitar players and bass players need to hear the bass drum clearly during blast beats, otherwise they will get lost, especially in high tempos, where you can't really hear the bass drum.
Good point! I think this is even more important for people using single foot blasts at high tempos.

A good thing to note is that the TM2 is terrible for using DDRUM triggers on, they worked fine with my TD-4 module, but with the TM-2, even with the sensitivity maxed and threshold at 0, you cant get a reliable trigger sound. Unless you have really shallow bass drum hoops and can squash the foam completely onto the bass drum head.. you show up to a show with a clown who uses sound dampening rings on the front of the bass drum and you're cooked.
7:25, not sure if you're aware of this, but Roland has a firmware update for the module that allows it to recognize the rt-30k

Ich würde in dem Fall empfehlen, zwei Bassdrums zu verwenden und immer genügend Spannung und Dämpfung. Dann sollte es ohne Probleme gehen. Auf einer Bassdrum sicher auch nicht unmöglich, aber schwieriger. Footblaster oder OnTrigger könnten da eine gute Alternative sein.

@@TheLeviathan13 Mit Laser Triggern sollte es kein Problem sein, mit einer Bassdrum zu spielen. Je nachdem von welchen Laser Triggern genau du sprichst, kann es aber in sehr seltenen Fällen Probleme mit Licht auf der Bühne geben, wenn z.B. Sonnenlicht auf die Bühne scheint oder ein Strobo hintern den Drums steht.
Can this TM-2 be sent into a Mackie Mixing board, for more tweaking of Low/Mid/High and then into Mackie Thump 15's ? Do i still need a DY box still ?

But you can use custom samples with the module so there should be no need for additional EQ. Output is normal jack cable so you need a DI box when you want to have balanced xlr. For recording it is enough to just plug it into my interface without DI.
When playing live, how should I go about adjusting my output volume? I feel like I have a good mix in the rehearsal room, but when we played our last show, the SE told us to turn down the trigger volume. Thanks!!
WTF? :D Normally the SE can turn up or down the volume of the trigger as he/she sees fit. That's what a mixing desk is for. So as long as the signal from your drum module is not clipping, the rest is usually up to the SE.
That beat you were playing in the beggining sounds really familiar to me...is it from a song or just something you came up with for the video?
The clip where I am playing is taken from another video from my channel - I was just jamming and thought it would sound kick ass to play some sort of marching rhythm with the double bass while blasting. gene Hoglan also does this a lot!

Playing with triggers is definitely not cheating, you still have to practice balance and playing accurately with precision.

Definetly both! A good mix can save a lot but it doesn't replace a good tuning ;)

ohhh yaaa...by the way, i use exactly the same trigger head and drum module as yours + axis classic longboard pedals.
I don' know if there is a website for that - I used the stock sounds on my module for a while and later put the bass drum sound from the last Negator album on my module. You can also record one strong bass drum hit and then EQ it until it sounds good and then cut it in a way that the main attack is really at the beginning of the sample. I think the TM-2 needs the sample to have certain specifications (like sample rate etc) - check out the manual for that.
So you export your selfmade sample with the required specs and then put it on a SD card wich you put into your module and it sould work.

I notice you add in a bit of a swivel to your bass drum moeller strokes, is it something you think about?
I don't do it on purpose. And it only happens at the beginning of a double bass roll and when I do short groups of notes. When I play for several bars my feet don't swivel around - I think it is more my feet trying to get into the movement and finding the right position.
Pretty much what you're doing then is dropping the leg (relaxing) to get a note and rebound, and then pointing the ball of the foot (tensing) to get the in between notes?
When you're working on speed with this technique, what things do you think about in your technique to keep rebound going? Where do you avoid putting pressure with muscles, and where do you intend to put it?

the threshold seems a bit high for me, personally I put mine at about 18. If I was using a trick laser trigger, I'd have the threshold on as low of a setting as possible without sacrificing the feel for the slower parts.

There is a setting where I can delay the signal a bit but when I have it on zero I don't notice any delay. It also depends on the sample I use - it is important that the peak is right at the beginning of the bass drum sample.

I think there is not that big a difference to normal drumheads. Right now I am using OnTriggers and in that case the drumhead does not matter at all.

Yes - I think everything from Roland will work well with each other.

During band rehearsals or when playing live the drum module is plugged into the PA.

I say use triggers why not just set them up in a way that the dynamics are "the same" as when playing acoustically. It's not cheating but some drummers get lazy and don't hit the bass drum consistently with a trigger and that leads to bad habits. + a little dynamics in fast runs is still okay
