Cant believe i have gone through all these different iterations and ended up with a normal snare drum in the end. BRILLIANT.
But now you have the knowledge that this was, in fact, the best solution available to you.
Just a "normal" custom built one-off snare drum. Like you do.
Compromising on the movement rather than the sound is definitely the better choice in my opinion. Good job.
How are you able to maintain being such a creative, skilled musician when this project takes up all of your time? I am always amazed by your impromptu tunes to fill in the videos. I would be mentally exhausted. So amazing to hear an actual full fledged tune on the MMX with no heralding just part of snare progress yet it's the first time being relatively full fledged.
How much % german is the MMX by now? lol
Oh man, when the vibraphone kicked in there I was almost in tears. IT PLAYS MUSIC! YA BEAUTY! Such a joy to follow you, Martin.
Went back and listened to it a second time immediately. So awesome!!!
I was in tears.
Yep, me too.
I thought I was dreaming for a second
Yeah, that was quite a moment. Brilliant!
A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to. And Martin, you're clearly a wizard.
This wonderful quote from the Lord of the Rings fits so well!
So spot on!
So much this.
You're a wizard Martin! *read in Hagrid's voice*
Oof that's an insult in internet-speak, being a "wizard" means to still be a virgin after 30 lol.
I bet Martin has a bowl of marbles on his nightstand instead of change from where he empties out his pockets at night.
That intro song is amazing. It's easy to forget that Martin isn't just an engineer, but also an ingenious musician.
This is one of the best qualities of the MMX build series... Watching a great musician learn about engineering, manufacturing, and fabrication.
@@kschleic9053 and then occasionally create music while procrastinating

I was thinking the same thing... would love to have the full version in one of my spotifylist someday... *wink, wink*
Holy sH#t!! It's only intro?! I want full version! 🙏🙏🙏 Please!!!
Hi, we are so proud to have your amazing music in our game! If anyone has any questions about The Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets which is available now for all major VR headsets, please let us know!
Is it just VR, or can you play it on a normal computer with mouse and keyboard? I'd absolutely love to play the game but sadly don't have a headset right now.
I just tagged you in a tweet of this video.
Did you paid martin for the music? Did you paid martin for the publicity?? Cause this looks a lot like sponsored content. Hope that martin is not naive about it.
@@EclatK Martin is many things. Naive is not one of them.

I started tearing up when I heard the vibraphone kick in. The MMX already sounds so incredible.
That Valse d'Amelie gets funkier each week
Soon it's gonna be Le Brakedancing d'Amelie
Getting really strong detektivbyran vibes from today's version. I love it!

I’d love that disclaimer on a shirt. Particularly if it said “Hi-hat is out of marbles”
wmaneker bump!
I'm in
So "My high hat is out of marbles" is now the new "My hovercraft is full of eels"?
Hi! Hat is out of marbles.

It is a good idea to not pivot the drum because when pivoting you also loose hitting force.
Ah... Agreed
Maybe some kind of lightning effect instead?
But then : how to catch the marble after hitting ?
And also double / tripple hits problems....
Drum heads (the part you hit) actually have a lot of tension, which makes things bounce off them like a trampoline. A lot of fast drumming techniques use this so you just push down on the stick instead of having to swing it back and forth.
@@aaronramos6056 nearly all instruments on the mmx are at an angle, sovthey would still bounce off. the main reason for the pivoting is that it looks cool.
13:40 when the vibraphone kicks in is absolutely brilliant.
Who also got goosebumps at this moment? The machine is ALIVE ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Whenever he gets new parts it’s like he’s opening Christmas presents It’s so pure
Literally got goose bumps all over when the machine started to play.
13:56 One smoll marble dropped at the Big drum and stayed there
It comes from the hi-hat
Hah. I heard the click, but didn't know what it came from. Well spotted.

But along those lines, I uhh... 11 inches is too big thanks.

Did anyone else get a huge grin listening to the song at the end. I love seeing how this is all coming together and starting to actually make some great music! Awesome!
Man this sounds soo good, and the marbles feel like rain drops falling.
They do! In the last video, before he put up the yoga mat for dampening, I thought the marbles hitting the cardboard sounded just like rain on a tent :)

Having watched every episode I’m only just starting to appreciate that you’ve had every instrument, every note, every musical phrase in your head all the time and in the last few videos mere mortals like me are just getting a glimpse of the vision. Amazing collision of engineering and art.
Me too!!!!!
Quite possibly the most beautiful machine that was ever built. Thank you for being you and for doing what you do.

Gosh, maybe I say this every time, but it feels like I just watched the Machine come to life here.
"it's a bad idea, this whole thing, isn't it?"
Imagine if he walked away now...
It’s hard to believe that the first video in which Martin mentioned plans for the MMX was published in January 2017. Nearly three years on now... wow. It would be really cool if the MMX was finished next year, MMXX in Roman numerals :)
@@blue_kobolt1785 MMX finished in MMXX - it's meant to be!
Can't do that, it is unthinkable.
@@blue_kobolt1785 Would be better if he finished it in 2010. Then the numerals would be MMX.
Tiberian Fiend yes, but MMXX is the best that can actually happen. MMX being finished in MMX would have been really cool, though.
"The madness, the madness" - that's why we're here!
Is that a reference to "Apocalypse Now"?
BrokenCurtain I will most certainly be corrected on this one but my first thought was that it is a quote from the original movie 'Frankensteins monster'.
I read that as "the marbles, the marbles".

Well if this is madness
Then I call it gladness.
Hope this comment doesn't get de monitised! I 🤣
As a university student currently studying music production, the snare drum is and always will be the bane of my life.
I can't stop watching the intro and outro over and over again. Lovin' it!
I have been following the MMX progress for the past few years now. I very rarely comment, but after hearing Martin play the MMX in this video I got crazy chills and I had to comment. Seeing the progress being made is outstanding. I remember watching the original MM and thinking that it couldn't get any crazier. And here we are years later with this beast of an instrument! I can't describe the joy I feel watching these videos. To Martin and the whole MMX team, keep up the amazing work! I can't wait for the tour!
Was not expecting the throwback of nostalgia this episode was

For some reason I didn't expect the machine to be able to play a full song yet even after seeing all the other episodes. It really took me by surprise how well it sounds. The hype is real!
One thing I love about what you guys are doing is it combines engineering with technology and art in a masterful combination, especially for someone who is far from being a millenial.

My english isn't that good that i could explain the joy while watching this. The effort that goes into this project is unbelievable and i can't wait to see music videos with the MMX.
Wintergatan music has a special vibe that gives you the impression of freedom, ease and luck.
Thank you to all of you for your self-sacrificing work to finish the MMX as early and as perfect as possible. I really apreciate that!
Retro music never fails
4:32 At last! Canadian content in the MMX!! I'm so proud (of our maple trees)
Ok you've got the right snare, now for proper tuning for optimal sound:
Tighten the top head super tight to get enough snap from the low momentum of the marble.
The bottom head can be tuned as you wish to get the tone of the snare just right. ;)
Yes and no. The bottom one will mostly give more snare buzz and more sensitivity in the snare wires the higher its tuned and slight differences in overtones/resonant frequencies. The top will make the most difference in sound with there being a trade off of lower tuning = lower tone but less rebound so less volume and a little less buzz or higher tuning = higher tone and more rebound so more volume and snare buzz. With the Big fat snare drum top he'll get more low tone anyway but there'll be a trade off for sound in the tuning still. Somewhere there'll be a tuning that gets the best of both while sounding hopefully like the vulfpeck sound he wants. I hope some profesh drummer will lend a hand at some point with tuning to get the best out of it.
@@massjammster7986 Gotta make a compromise due to low momentum of the marble. My personal suggestion. Ultimately this is Martin's choice in tuning. If you want an example of light snare play with a high tension top head listen to Michael Jackson's "Rock With You"

This machine is going to outlive everyone here - subscribers, donors, and creator alike. Our grandchildren will probably be able to visit it in a museum, and if they are lucky, see and hear it play.
Just wanted to take a second to tell you how inspiring you are! Thank you for what you do, the art you creat and most of all being willing to take us along for the ride. Don’t forget to take a breath every once in a while to look back and see how far you have come!
Man hearing the marble machine X play an almost complete song after these years of watching you build it was really something special
The Junkernaut my whole heart smiled
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN
As a mechanical engineer by schooling, a manufacturing engineering by trade, and a hobbyist video editor, this is amazing. And hairs on the back of neck stood up when the vibraphone kicked in. This video series has helped get me through 2020 quarantine
It's crazy seeing it all start to come together after watching it be put together piece by piece. Truthly breathtaking.
"let's just finish the marble machine x"
Maybe after the world tour you could duel headline a show with Greenbeats. They look really fun to see live
Every time we hear the marble machine play a song after another stage in its development, I get emotional. Properly emotional. Feelings in my chest I otherwise rarely feel. Martin, thank you for inviting us on this journey. It is a privilege.
Loved the semi improv performance of Martin and MMX!!!
Well, you really CAN'T let the drums move without losing kinetic energy from the marble hits.
I just love how many people have come together to help make the MMX dream become a reality. Cant wait till its finished. You'll get there and it'll be amazing
I was in tears! So much work, not finished yet but already so much quality!
When looking at you as a talented engineer, Martin, I often forget how talented you are as an artist as well.
That intro was something else, absolutely loved it.
If this thing gets any more complex, it will have a mind of its own, and enslave humankind with its music.

Hearing the tune played on the MMX genuinely made me smile. Thanks to the great start to my day. 😀
I enjoy the way you’ve described the sounds of the drums.
I agree, the mosquito and wrecking ball comparison made it click for me
That small sample sounded brilliant. We're getting there boys and girls
The accordion part you played at the end added so much to this composition. Beautiful song.
Hearing it play makes my heart soar
When the orchestra doesn’t show up but you play every instrument.
i was recommended the orchestrina project for someone who tries to do all that with electronic triggers instead of mechanical like the mmx has
It's so great hearing the marble machine x playing music.
Love, Love, Love! The Marble Machine X begins to sing!
Incredible. I’ve followed the project since the beginning and hearing it play for the first time was an emotional experience.. it has so much of your time and so many other peoples time and expertise put into it. it’s amazing to see how everything has come together. Thank you for sharing the process, Can’t wait till next Wednesday.
That rendition of La Valse d'Amélie was just absolutely perfect.

Actually seeing this thing playing music finally is magical! Cant wait for it to be finished
The excitement is building, it sounds fantastic
Sometimes when I open these videos I forget that MMX already PLAYS MUSIC and I'm so shocked everytime you remind me of its capabilities at this point!!! :o
Martin, you are a crazy person in the best possible kind of way and the world is a better place with you and your creations.
So beautiful to watch it play.
Can't believe how amazing this sounds now. And it will only get better. When the vibraphone came in it blew my mind.
Possibly the best episode intro Martin has ever done. It's fantastic.
I can see him composing the music for a cyberpunk movie or film.
Is it good or bad that he didn't use saw, angle grinder or welder on the snare drum?
That’s probably why Tim sent a holder with it.
Variable. I would say there's some load-in/load-out questions in the future since it's all adjustable and the MMX will be disassembled for touring.
Yes
He didn’t did that to the Diresta cogs so I guess that’s good
It is such a pleasure accompanying you along in this journey.
Thank you very much, Martin. Your relentless work has once again made me smile after a long day of work for my own part. This was more than I had expected, so thank you again! Good job, well done. Your journey is heading for something really epic. I love the looks of this.
Just for reference, 11” inch means 11 inch inch
That's the same as the combination on my luggage
Well if your 11 inch isn't 11 inches, it isn't really an 11 inch, is it? And if the 11 inch is 11 inches, then that makes it an 11 inch 11 inch. What Martin is doing is simply down-scaling the universe by a factor of 11 to get deeper bass, making the 11 inch 11 inch into the 11 inch inch :P
LucAs Bune I’m pointing out that 11” inch basically says inch twice
@@Jellylamps And i'm constructing a situation where it would make sense to say inch twice. It's a joke.
LucAs Bune if you say so
I know artists are born without the "good enough" gene, but it already sounds AMAZING!Cheers
Thanks to Greenbeats!
The real snare is not only better sounding than before, but improves the capabilities with the three-way toggle.
If only a real kick would fit, the MMX would be nearly free of heavy postprocessing.

Comparing the old marble machine with new you can really see the improvement in quality and standard. I can also see that all your patreon contributions are allowing you to buy really top class materials, tools and expertise. That is a great investment for a machine that will last and be enjoyed for a hundred years! It will be a lovely piece of industrial history when future historians look at what tools a builder had available in the early 21 Century to hand-build a complex machine.
