    Hey Martin, love watching your videos!
    Smaller splash cymbals will need much more "attack" force right at the edge of the cymbal to get the bright sound you are after, something that would not be possible with a marble drop. If you wanted to keep a smaller cymbal in reach, I feel it would need to have a mechanical hitting mechanism (which you may love or hate). When playing as a drummer I put quite a lot of force in to a splash, and the rocking of the cymbal helps with the characteristic splash sound. Otherwise the big cymbal idea is great!

    • @happymann1000
      @happymann1000 5 років тому +2

      Agreed. The contact microphone also dampens the sound of the splash more. I think you made the best choice for the contact mike though.

    • @chllr8355
      @chllr8355 5 років тому

      It also makes a big difference if you hit the cymbal with a stick on the side or just on top. And with the marble dropping on top of the cymbal you get less of a crash.

  • @mikebennett2015
    @mikebennett2015 5 років тому +13

    During the tests the contact mic was attached with white tac. I imagine you will use something more permanent in final production. A hard glue is going to transmit more high frequencies. Have you considered this?

    • @Jonaasti

      Keep in mind the MMX is a instrument primarily, and not a engineering project. A engineering project without a purpose is worthless. So what is the point of making the MMX if its primary purpose of being an instrument that sounds good isn't met? Even if it could be considered feature creep it would be one worth having so that its primary goal, per its original design, is met. It need a symbol that sounds good and if its position and type have to change to suit this, then so be it.

    • @cypherdras
      @cypherdras 5 років тому +4

      @@Jonaasti I'm not musically minded so it looked like feature creep to me, however I do get engineering. If it needs something overlooked to function, so be it.

    • @kyleballing
      @kyleballing 5 років тому +8

      A way to dampen the cymbal is a must. In college I did a project like this, with a computer controlled glockenspiel. It had no damping at all and as the notes would ring on endlessly, the music turned into a wash of obnoxious noise. A damper shouldn't be too hard to figure out. I imagine something like a hi hat mechanism that presses a piece of cork up. Or if you went for a wide bowl with wool felt around the edges, you could modulate it like a trumpet mute and get some interesting reverberations.

    • @Shrooblord
      @Shrooblord 5 років тому +1

      You _could_ say that. You could _also_ say, as a drummer, in my personal experience, some of my best-sounding moments and most fun exercises while drumming are from crash-muting my crash cymbals.

    Not that I know anything of the subject, but I feel that attaching the contact microphones with blu-tack (?) might result in a dampening effect on certain frequencies. This could be why post-processing was needed to hide the lower frequencies (the "gong sound"), and to boost up the high frequencies of the cymbal sound. Experimenting with a more rigid way of attaching the contact microphones could result in optimal results here.

    Technically contact microphones are actually accelerometers. They do not respond to air pressure waves

    • @KuraIthys
