This is the beginning of the end for VW. Their management and owners are unable to embrace electric cars. It's difficult to see a positive outcome for the brand.
He fired the wrong guy. He should’ve sacked the Guy in charge of software/infotainment.
Im surprised he’s still there.
BYD cars lineup is created by former Audi - that's part of VW group - chief designer Wolfgang Egger - and now have the best looking Chinese cars, on par of Nio and Xpeng, and - that's my opinion - way better looking than VW ID series.
Beside great look, BYD cars are engineered in the most effective way so that they can actually compete with Tesla.
VW’s design was the only thing it had going for it. Never underestimate the stupidity of VW management.
A lot of the "concepts" looked great, but by the time the cars made it to manufacturing they looked like complete crap! ...and this is a problem with most of the world's auto manufacturers. Get the masses excited with a beautiful "concept" and then manufacture garbage, pretending that the next model will finally look great. They all suck!
“It’s the software, stupid!!”-Tesla
The designs are fine. The ID3 and Buzz are actually quite nice to look at IMO. VW CEO should better concentrate on in-car software.
They f-ed up the interior and transition from concept to production for the Buzz
Insane. Their EVs look fine - better than most. Their designs are the least of their problems. They have massive software reliability issues and those should be their only focus until those get resolved. Firing the designer is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
ID4 was meant to be their big seller in the USA. And it’s horribly bland looking. Especially when considering against much more interesting designs. Ioniq 5. Ariya. Cadillac Lyric
VW is known for poor reliability and excessively expensive maintenance. Being an EV should help with the maintenance, but the obvious cost cutting present in everything you interact with in the ID.4 reinforces the notion that it isn't built to last belong the warranty. Plus, they're so bland they make a mid 2000s Corolla look interesting. VW needs to poach designers from the Korean brands.
Software is a huge issue, yes, but do you want to spend $39,000 on a new car that looks "fine?" What do VW EVs offer that would make someone pick them over other EVs? They are not winning on features or price or quality, so looks that are fine will not cut it.
I prefer the design of the VW iD series to the Bentayga, that’s for sure. And the BMW gorilla butt grill-don’t get me started 😂
Bwahahaha! Brilliant! 😁
I agree - Kia and Hyundai are making the best looking cars in the world, just now. Poach that guy..
The id 3 is now as expensive as a model Y.
Really? You mean after the last price cuts at Tesla? That's shocking!
@@jfv65 yes and if you equip your id 3 a little bit it's way more expensive than a model Y.
Rip. Vw...
Wut? Wow i guessed that was a US thing to do with the tax credit.
Then I priced up an ID.3 in the UK (the 77kWh version because it has to compete with the SC network). Incredibly its more expensive than than a Model Y RWD and thats without any subsidies or similar !The ID.3 'standard range' is only just a bit cheaper certainly not enough to tempt me or most Id have thought. Strangely the ID.4 is not much different in price but of course again more than a Y. Insanity. And they are worried about design.
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726Haha 100% this, i love my ID3 but its total shitt for the Price.
Its like a 15-20k USD car
Not sure if design matters when the engineering of VW's EVs aren't up to par in the first place.
bmw designers outlasting vw designers is hilarious to me
Lol
VW CEO need to fire himself
Good one!
BMW has the ugliest vehicles on the road. I drive 2 2003 X5s, and love the design and layout. Someone watched too much anime and Power Rangers.
New BMW front grill= 🐒butt...
The first gen x5 is a timeless design won't lie. If they could make a new updated remake, I'd buy in a heart beat. Used to have a 4.4 2001 with the wider staggered rear wheels. Such a sexy beast
Not too bad if you sit inside and don’t have to look at the exterior.
Like the Lexus, BMW’s need bigger grilles. Their grilles are too small.
BMW always looks awefull.
They should use some Porsche designers. The Taycan looks great.
I think VW a larger problem. To scrap designs could be a Billion dollars proposition at a time when many automakers are looking between the seats for change. My issue with VW is not the looks or design. It is the software that had grounded my friends Id4 for three months with no fix insight. I don't know about the rest of the US but the sentiment on social media in California is runaway from VW.. Priority is fixing the software. Somewhere between Germany and Silicon Valley there has to be someone to can repair the problem Like GM, reassure those customers who have bought the Bolt, Gm has their backs. Right now how many of your subscribers knowing what they know, would buy any VW Ev?
I would love to know how much it costs to actually design these cars. Ignoring things like developing a new engine, which VW obviously don't have to do. I can't think of a single component they'd have to actually design, other than the bodywork and interior. There's zero reason they couldn't just open their catalogues and choose the most efficient body to make. Everything I've head about the software is a total disaster. They should just do a deal with Tesla and licence theirs.
What's more frustrating is they have the mechanism to easily fix the software without a service centre visit, they can send OTA updates. But they seem to be taking their time.
What they need is a 1. product owner for their software that will pick apart what Tesla and Polestar ( Google Automotive) are doing so well and build that into the next update. 2. The product owner and software engineering team to be made dog food the ID range.
3. Increase the rate of software releases like any agile software team would.
@@chris-ryan I don't understand it either. I'm not an expert. Just a consumer. I remember after two or three years Hyundai left the US after selling thousands of a terrible car. No apology were gone When they returned, they came back with a very expensive warranty that said, trust us. VW isn't doing anything, not offering a loaner(at least at this one dealership) or a date on when the car might be repaired as they continue making monthly payments
Have to agree with all your comments. Mercedes made a huge mistake in 2003 letting recently graduated accountants and engineers to cut manufacturing costs. Result recalls and unhappy customers.
I won't be surprised Toyota will soon have to fire somebody higher up as well.
Toyota bankrupt before year 2028...
Should start at the top.
Toyota should have fired their "gaping grille" designers years ago.............
Both VW and Toyota has the problem that their owners hasn't grasped the problem with ICE cars.
And you can't fire the owners.
Instead, they fire the disruptiors, such as Herbert Diess,
Apart from the *ID Buzz* it was pretty much a [expletive] show. Even that was a _retro_ van.
There was nothing interesting or compelling about the offering.
That's what happens when you're run by a bunch of accountants.
Saw an idbuzz the other day, take away the two tone colour scheme and its really nothing new from a design perspective and not even all that retro just a T5 face-lift
I think it would be wildly more appealing if they took the favourite of the original designs and just used that. Then it would look cool. As it is, it's just an expensive modern van.
German car design has lacked flair for years. They can learn a lot from Renault and Peugeot who seem to allow their designers far more freedom.
The main problem now is that they cost same or more than a Tesla and lack heavily in efficiency, doesn't have a similar charging network etc. VW should reevaluate what quality means for an EV.
So, VW has a head designer for every (12?) brand. A dozen "teams" all compete against each other WITHIN the VW group. Tesla has one (1) design team under A+ Franz von Holzhausen. Oh yeah. He's been the showrunner since 2008.
When cars like the Cupra Born or the Skoda Eniaq look better than any VW ID car, you have to ask yourself why? At the end of the day you still need to offer a desirable product people want to buy and drive to succeed in the business. It does not help if both the interior and the infotainment suck. This is obvious and yet this train wreck in slow motion was allowed to happen. Other popular brands are guilty of this as well with boring and half-baked releases.
Exactly!
The company is in trouble thus blame and accusations will be leveled on throw away employees until the business completely fails.
Designs are bad because the original brief was to make them ugly as they didn't really want them to sell.
Ironically the person who has led Hyundai group's design renaissance is an old VW group veteran, Luc Donckerwolke. Who left VW presumably after internal power struggles and has had a tremendous outing at Hyundai. VW group has been under great pressure because of dieselgate, now the transition to EVs, lots of management churn, so outlook for the company is dim unless they're able to promote a strong leader to turn things around.
The Tesla price cuts are a manifestation of what Diess tried to prepare VW for. Now they have no chance any more. They cannot compete with the present platform and they sure as hell cannot compete with generation 3.
The Hyundai ioniq 6 is one of the ugliest cars on the street.
Are you kidding the Genesis looks bent. Better to run a competition out in public and just offer a prize for the best looking
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 Relax, exterior appearance has nothing to do with the platform on which it's built
@@MegaWilderness that is exactly the problem. The platform is uncompetitive. Diess tried to give VW a competitive platform in 2025 but it was too fast for the laggards at VW.
I agree with this decision. In fact, designers of many EV brands should be replaced as their designs are less than attractive and many of these designers spend too much time copying each other rather than coming up with head turning and eye pleasing products. The best designers are born with this ability and comes naturally just like the best artists. I worked on engineering new custom aircraft interiors for the ultra rich and let me tell you the most important person is the designer.
Hi Sam, greetings from the U.K. Like you I have owned BMWs in the past, many of their older designs are beautiful classics, the E36; 1990s 3 Series, the E39; similar era 5 Series are instantly recognisable as BMW and retain the classic understated design. I agree with your opinion of the current BMW range, the exaggerated kidney grills are totally vulgar and look like a pair of buck teeth. Over at the VW group their main problems have been with their engines. Any mechanic will tell you about the disastrous EA888 2 litre petrol engine; utter disaster! Also VAGs obsession with cam-belt designs, when a cam-chain would last the life of the vehicle. I’m 57, and a traditional petrol head, but I went EV in 2019 - best decision I ever made, I now find combustion vehicles repulsive!
If BMW execs had a brain, they'd produce an electric 2002 tii.
In Sweden we have garbage cans which has the same look as the typical BMW grill.
Quite funny, I think!
But isn't that an infringement on the BMW trademark?
The electric combi van looks awesome but it's stupid expensive. 🙄
One key aspect of design is designing for manufacturability. Unfortunately, if you do your job well, that can make you a very unpopular person real quickly in large organizations, which were built and resourced around status quo product design.
Easiest job in the world..... designer at porche..... basically look the same since 1950 just interpretations of the previous model ... definition of boring and generic
I don't think the designs of EVs matter, what they should worry about is their engineers who can't make the costs of their EVs low enough to make any net profit on their vehicles at all
VW keeps getting it wrong. A carriage maker in the world of cars. Getting rid of diess was their first mistake. Rip vw.
Unfortunately, the baby "carriage" ain't cute.
Nothing wrong with VWs design in my view. It’s the technical execution that’s the issue with them. Poor software, poor batteries that seem the be degrading faster than most and cheap and nasty interior materials. The ID buzz could be a modern Icon.
"The ID buzz could be a modern Icon" ... agreed, if they had stuck with the concept car design instead of watering it down.
In a nutshell: it's just blind panic at VW. One of the steps is playing the blaming game.
Most modern cars are ugly and have woeful blind spots. I had a Kia Sportage with a massive rear blind spot. My Tiguan has good all round vision. It's one of the reasons I bought it.
For years it seemed that legacy automakers made a huge effort to make their EVs ugly. Tesla showed that EVs could be attractive and fairly normal looking and sell well. VW got the normal message but not the attractive message, designing cars that look like the EV versions of econobox cars. Oddly enough, buyers less than excited to spend fairly large amounts on a bland looking car.
Maybe VW should have a design competition and hire the winner.
Thanks for this article with soo many vehicle's looking like a bar of soap all coming from different showers one of the visual items I have been watch including VW is the cowl height and "A" pillar location it seems high. I'm sure safety crash standards are some reason but Tesla does not have that problem?
The BMW Beaver teeth designs are hidious. Sam, can you just show side and rear images going forwards as I'm sometimes eating whilst watching your videos. Thanks!
My friend Eager is really offended.
I bought an VW.ID3 mainly due to two reasons, 1) relatively small car for 4 persons and 2) the nice design.
Biggest issue with iD range is software. Cars are decent looking but people are realizing their software is a disaster. Wouldn't matter what the exterior looked like.
VW hasn’t been very dynamic in terms of upgrading their cars models. The Golf I drove in 1994 looked quite alike the ones they sell today. The Jetta who was once ahead of the parade, looks really ordinary these days. As if their design department stopped innovating. I think VW should have chosen someone younger to manage the EV department. Not sure they chose the good horse!
I can fully understand this. When I see these ugly headlights in my mirror I really start to feel sick.
Lets say you had the money for a new car, would you buy something like a Tesla, or VWs new car, in which they've fixed software, got the price right down, got all the best features, cheaper and better in every way than a Tesla... only it still has those headlights? Because I think the look of one family car vs another family car matters very very little in actual purchasing decisions.
@jonevansauthor cheap describes everything you see and feel inside an ID.4. Not inexpensive, cheap. Why anyone would buy one when there are better options from companies that stand behind their products (something VW doesn't do in America) for comparable money is beyond me.
@@Noah_E right but my point was, no-one cares about what cars look like on the outside or inside. They care about being able to buy them and them working.
Everything else is way down the list. Except for 100% irrational people.
@@jonevansauthor “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” Why would you willingly settle for an inferior product when the difference in price between it and another is negligible to nonexistent when you factor in better resale value and a better ownership experience? It's false economy to buy a VW over a better brand
Panic at VW unable to sell their EV's... get Victoria Beckham in 🤣
R. I. P. ⚰️🌹 VW...
Well, the designs are ugly. Let the firings continue until the designs improve.
I think Toyota makes some of the ugliest vehicles on the planet. I own a base model Toyota Tacoma and it is one fugly truck, but it has the best fuel economy so I bought it. Never making that mistake again.
When a bad leader's orders prove to be stupid, they blame the person they ordered to escape responsibility.
What were witnessing at VW is exactly what was predicted for legacy auto companies unprepared and unable to make the transition to affordable, profitable all-electric cars. Society has been watering down the meaning of words in day to day conversation, e.g., the inappropriately used "awesome". Those in the traditional auto industry are beginning to appreciate the true meaning of the word "disruption" as they begin to experience it.
Why not just ask for some new design ideas? These decisions are not made in a vacuum. Somebody up the chain has to approve them…
Anyone buying a car based on looks first, deserves to be fleeced. Just like anyone buying a house whose first three thoughts aren't the well known advice, location, location, location, is also foolish. Yes, it's nice to have things that look nice. But the function of a car is to safely move human beings at speed to another location. The criteria are number of seats (you can use), size, cost, safety score (ignoring Euro NCAP corruption), and price, price, price.
I'm not sure what the 'designer' does, but I only care about the people who do the engineering design, not the 'lets change the way cars look to fleece gullible people' design. Aptera clearly didn't care about looks. Tesla just uses bland family car design. Volkswagen makes family cars, it's even in their name!
I would consider buying one if their entire range went electric, all cars were designed from the ground up to be EV and have no transmission tunnels, the prices come down massively, and they start producing in volume.
All their design engineering focus should be purely based on efficient production at high volume just like Tesla do. Thankfully, they aren't doing that and any ICE company not doing that, is going to lose share to Tesla by the time the 2030 cut off dates start coming around.
Now, I'm British so I only care about car companies from the Commonwealth. I'm fine with all the German ones going bust but sympathetic to their factory workers who have no control over their utterly insane board. Except, umm, they have people on the board from the unions so... no, not that sympathetic. Maybe they can't control those people who are fools, any more than they can control the other fools on the board?
We've just had Britishvolt tank in the UK and literally all they needed to do was buy some existing machines and make some batteries. Not hard. They did not need to innovate on battery design. If they had manufacturing capacity, they could have license design. Instead the widdled money down the drain it seems and never actually made anything. I'm not even sure that any of our car companies are British anymore? I'm pretty sure they're all foreign owned. :(
Bring back Italdesign…..please.
Maybe their electric cars will look more like Bentleys not RC toys.
The VW blames the design of their EV. But that isn't their real problem.
Manufacturing and technology is what limits them more than the design. But that requires investmends and leadership. So, they finds a scapegoat.
They are not yes at the end of the rope. But the signs are that they are close, ... and they know it, but can't admit to it.
The designs are fine, the software is the problem they need to fix, it just isn't good enough for a car at this price point.
I own an ID4 and as soon as a good 7 seater ev comes out I will be trading it.
From Seat
Andreas Mindt was not responsible for the Bentaiga design. He joined Bentley not so long ago with the objective of designing Bentley’s 1st EV. And for me, personally, the Bentley Mulliner Batur which he designed is one of the most beautiful cars of the VW Bentley era. Before joining Bentley he was responsible for the design of several Audi models, like the A1, Q3 and e-tron.
Have to agree VW's recent designs have been lacklustre and reliability is even worse!
I have the seat cupra Leon that deSilva designed and it still looks good after 22 years. I think that the VW cars indeed need a bit more elegant designs. I think the ID cars turned out good. But good is not great. And that is really a good point because a great design is not necessary making the car more expensive to produce but it gives the car a great value.
They should fire their dashboard software team first . VW being VW always get their priority wrong
I feel bad for car designers, in order to make their cars “unique”, and not look like other vehicles that have 4 wheels, they have to take the ugly AF route, or the anti aerodynamic route.
Not everyone likes the look of the Ioniq 5, not everyone likes the retro-future looks.
Should have made them look like plastic legos, with the stubs and all.
would be great for vertical parking.
The id 4 was always very pleasing to me. Looked cool and modern. Clearly electric (front area, grill etc) but not ridiculous like a bmw id3
Herbert Diess "Well, YOU'RE the one who hired him!" ;)
Publicly criticizing an ex employee will get you sued!
Yess. Finally someone shares same thoughts.
I never liked these designs ever.
I mean their ICE designs look more elegant. Be it touareg, arteon or even jetta.
Automotive bosses should fire themselves for refusing to give us the vast choice of great low-cost/cheap EVs that Chinese consumers can choose from.
Paul G
How stupid. Who okayed the design into reality in the first place???????
ALL people on the board should be fired.
VW EV designs are great, but the driving controls are a disaster compared to my beloved 2018 Golf GTE and 2020 E-Golf. I just finally lost patients with VW and bought a Tesla Model 3 LR instead... Great car!
For better VW designs and for killing BYD, I think VW should bring Wolfgang Egger back!!
But why did they let those designs go into production? I didn't want to buy a Tesla but they had the best looks, price, eco system, charging, etc. I thought I might buy my first vw another brand but damn they all make ugly EV's. Smh
vw designs lately do suck
VW has done everything wrong for years now, including de design of their EV range ! Totally agree with your analysis. And yes, the best EV designs come today from Hyundai. Maybe VW has in fact tried to poach their designer ... we don't know.
Kia made a smart move hiring Peter Schreyer from Audi and boosted their sales as a result despite terrible GDI engines I wouldn't go anywhere near. I always thought since the 80's that GM or anyone else with terrible designers should at least have artists (from Japanese anime to architects etc) on board as consultants from the early stages of design.
That any company puts so much stock in any single designer or similarly minded small team seems comletely bonkers to me. Pre-Kia it seemed to be the intent to make terrible looking affordable cars to encourage buyers to spend more for better design, so I'm glad that has changed somewhat. Now onto fixing most maker's reliability issues!
@@csn10 "Pre-Kia it seemed to be the intent to make terrible looking affordable cars"

The VW bus looks nice but upper management is correct that the rest of their electric cars 🤢🤮
I looked at the ID4 VW EV. I think it looks much better than any of the Tesla model out there, inside & out. The best-looking sports car is the Pre 2014 Jaguar XK & XKR. Not at all the F models, look like nothing. Yes, VW has many other problems.
That was pretty dumb
VW boring exterior and interior BEV cars.
I don't like the big kidney BMW grills either. BMWs from some years ago had big kidney grills also however.
They will never learn will they ?
Many legacy ICE OEMs have the worst front grille designs. They have been getting massive during the last decade. It might have started with Audi but then morphed its way to BMW, Lexus and others. They are all hideous at best …
Fire the CEO.
Empires rise & fall
Also fire the guy who thought it was a great idea to use high gloss plastic on the inside, while at it. Then go sit in a Tesla for week. Take a good look, and try again.
Get the Polestar designer hired!
No, he needs to stay at Polestar :)
I know its subjective but i think the ID.3 is a good looking car, ID.4 is OK (in a good way OK). Pity they messed the Buzz up the initial concept was awesome why didn't they just make that? And bentleys are great big ugly cars why on earth would you think the person who designed/managed the look of those would be a good choice?
I have liked the designs so far. The microbus in particular looked great.
Yeah, not that bad. Munro speaks truth when he said no one takes risks in legacy auto unless you never want to be promoted or even fired
Great CEO , stop making the cars that people want and replace them with cars they can't afford
Good management 👍
You'd offer a designer a billion dollars? You'd borrow the money? And I love the new BMW designs even though I'm a Mercedes fan. I find them challenging and singular.
He designed the VW id 7 and they fired him before showing it to the world. Disgusting. Id means intelligent device. Getting rid of the id idea is so symbolic. Ignorance and stubbornness are back at VW. The spirit of Dieselgate is back at VW.
In Germany they have a direct way of speaking. I don't think this is VW thing I think it's a German thing. I like direct and to be honest I like the look of their EV's
They are boring, expensive cars.
Love the basketball analogy lol
NIO replaced their Dosing group also....Thee is serious completion coming down the pipeline with EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE" INEXPENSIVE" cars equal in Quality and PERFORMANCE.....
Most/all legacy auto manufacturers are going through an internal arms race. That being the ICE/EV evolution. Through in market share tussles and all the other internal politics and you see a lot of churn in the departmental heads.
Now let me get this straight - the VW CEO fires the Chief Designer because VW management accepted and went into production of a design he, the CEO, didn't like?
If VW didn't like the design, would it have made it into production?
If VW put the design into production and the customers didn't like it (and therefore didn't buy it), who should be fired? - the designers? - the management that accepted the design and authorized the production? - the CEO, who had to sign-off before production could proceed?
The CEO is right. VWs look horrible. Designed by an ICE car designer who hates EVs.
In North America, we think VW designers hate Americans.
