I’ve owned sedans, SUV’s, mini-vans and pick-up trucks, and the best all around car I ever owned was a 1995 Mercedes ER320 Wagon… handled great, had a jump seat in the back, so could sit 7 people, huge configurable cargo and a low roof/roof rack that was easy to load, etc. I remember putting 10 sheets of plywood on the roof! Great all around format!
In my 60 years on the road I've owned quite a few cars, wagons and trucks. Worst of all, real lemon, was a ford station wagon (so many problems), second worst a Toyota truck (cracked heads, 5th gear the size of a cotton reel) Best car Skoda diesel wagon. Never failed me in 13 years, have got 3.5 l/100k, that's around 80mpg and that was a genuine figure. That figure obtained on a road with speed restricted to 70k, normal get 5 - 5.5l/100k. Still own it. Probably see me out. Can't afford electric. You'll all be sucking up my fumes for another 20 years - sorry about that. I don't like it either. It's a financial constraint. I'll probably be the only gas car on the road in 20 years.
I like station wagons. Less drag and lighter than any SUV. SUV's use around 30% more fuel than a station wagon and station wagons often have more luggage capacity.
It's not exactly like this.
I have a Tiguan (European wheelbase which is shorter than the American market version we call Tiguan Allspace).
A Passat is 4.8m in lenght while a Tiguan is 4.5m. Those -30cm can make the difference when you need to park alongside the street. So, shorter means better.🤷♂️
Inside the Tiguan cabin there is more space for all passengers comparing with a Passat cabin.
Luggage space, yes you are right Buță Tiguan has a flexible trunk while the space for the passengers în the second raw will get a little bit smaller but still decent.
I drove 4 hours without taking any break at all and guess what: getting out the Passat after those 4 hours of continuous driving I felt like being paralized while the Tiguan ride gave me a way more confortable experience.
Consumption: Tiguan 1.5tsi if I keep driving at 100km/h it takes like 6.3-6.5l per 100km, on the highways at a constant speed of 130km/h it takes 7.4-7.6l per 100km.
Please keep in mind that a Tiguan Allspace is 4.7m and the space is cavernous, you'll have plenty of space for luggage.
It is correct that a Passat "sits" better than a Tiguan on the road, but honestly driving in the city or on the highways doesn't require extraspecial road behavior. It is quite boring so a Tiguan can handle it without any issue.🖐
Thanks!
Thanks mate. It means a lot.
Time for a station wagon revival!
Always loved wagons. Never could figure out why they don't sell here in the US (except the Subaru Outback).
wagons are not s "cool" as an SUV. just much better. obviously better will always lose out to cool.
Yes... we need wagons not SUVs. That's why I own Subaru Outback. I wish Toyota will have something similar. They won't because they own 20 % of Subaru
Wagons make so much sense that car companies are slowly stretching the back of small SUV's. eventually we will have a wagon but we will just call it an SUV. 😅
Dude, I’m currently driving a 2016 Skoda Superb Wagon 4x4 diesel and I’m really hoping they (VW) come to their senses and release an electric version of it. It’s definitely the perfect platform for an EV… Hearing your comments just reiterated what I was thinking just two weeks ago. Fingers crossed they do that, cause I hate this SUV/Crossover trend that’s going to n right now
The closest you are going to get for a long time is a TMY performance. I’m not saying it’s a good replacement. I’m saying it’s the nearest thing in the next 10 years
The problem isn’t design (I quite like the looks of the ID4) - it’s the software integration and pricing. VW have a long way to go to get this right (I tried an ID4 and user experience just not acceptable for a £50K car).
If they can sort this out at a competitive price they will do well but I think they’ve got an uphill struggle with competitors already way ahead of them.
I totally agree
and the charging network. The interior is cringe too.
There's a serious lack of EV estate (UK lingo for wagons) cars around, a real shame as they are so versatile. There seems to be a complete obsession by manufactures to make SUVs.
Loved my MG5 and the new MG5 is even better.
Well done Sam. TFCS is not in London. It's at Farnborough, home of the famous airshow, which is a train or nigh-on one hour car journey away to the south-west in Hampshire.
I have the Passat 5th version, and for me it's been so far the best car ever. It has 300000 km already, but I intend to run it up to 350000, because so far, it's reliable and needs no repairs between the prescribed regular visits to service. Maybe I can wait the period before getting the Tesla?
Wagons are underrated!
Biggest problem is the low sitting position (sitting down) and hazel with seating belts when fastening kid in to a station wagon. I really appreciate higher sitting and overview in a SUV. No way I go back.
I really like the wagons, vw's problem is mostly software.
Speaking of wagons, US drivers have no access to the Corolla hybrid wagon which has been built for years now, but stuck with the only option with the sedan as the cheapest hybrid...
Same in Oz. Here it is all (small, in many cases) SUVs. I like wagons.
I think sedan can be ok if bootlid opens from top of rear window like in hatchback.
VW could have done worse, they could have hired a BMW designer.
looks just like my mg 5 station wagon which is a brilliant car
I think they did a nice job with dat large wv suv 💯
This wagon looks pretty aerodynamic, compared with SUV of similar capacity. Even here in America, where "everybody" wants an SUV, some less sporty (older?) folks may prefer this body style, as they generally stay on smooth roadways, where this must be a great highway cruiser.
The Passat was always a good seller here in Europe, they had a big push years ago selling them at discounted prices and they were absolutely everywhere, seemed like every taxi company had fleets of them. The ice versions now are still decently priced.
One problem now is likely to be price, VW electrics aren't particularly competitive with other stuff on the market. There's only one estate car jn Europe just now the MG5 which has just had a 2nd gen facelift and is as good a design as that VW at around $30,000, $34,000 for the top spec and they are actually available on showroom floors, another problem with VW, and other manufacturers to be fair, they don't have the cars, 9 month waits and expensive won't cut it. This VW in decent trim levels will be $45-50,000.
NICE LOOKING WAGON..Now if only VW can fix their software!
VW had a prototype wagon at the 2019 LA Autoshow called the ID.Vizzion. I'm in Canada and would pick an EV wagon over any other type.
I've had two Ford wagons. They were great for a large family. My last car is a smallish SUV. It has 200mm ground clearance, great for the urban jungle where kerbs are ridiculously high. It has off road and snow modes as well as part time AWD. It has hill descent forward and reverse. Not bad for an electronic diff.
I can see out of it with no problems. The seat is a bit higher for my 70 year old hips. There are reasons why SUV's are popular. Some, such as the CX3, are ridiculous. Others are much more practical.
I have always wished for an e-golf all track. This will do
I kinda like VWs minimalist styling, but not so keen on their hit and miss reliability!
The ID. Space Vizzion concept looks much better.
I really like the styling and feel of the "boring" Passat hybrid. But after doing some research I learned that it record shows that these cars have a lot of problems. The Passat has made it to the top 5 problem cars in Europe. So IF they were to produce an full EV model I would reconsider.
Waiting for the video about your Atto3

Electric Viking: PÄSSÄT
Viking is a big youtuber now
Not just design but prices, software and expensive services and marketing! The heart of manufacturing belongs to Tesla and other companies must address this basic issue to make profits on their cars sold at competitive prices! Wagons great on good tarmac, SUV's for country roads!
lol that passat has exhaust pipes, come on viking, hello?
I don't see the reason to buy this over the MG5, I originally had the old MG5 which had a few flaws... e.g. terrible infotainment system, but the new MG5 is cheaper and better speced than this and the interior is actually really quite nice.
Hey Sam, someone messaged me ,pretending to be you, might want to give another shout out for people to beware.
Farzad Mesbahi shared your Go Fund Me page and said you could be on his program anytime you wanted to.
That’d be awesome!
There will NOT be an electric Passat. Only hybrids.
I think it would be called Arteon shooting brake EV would be great
What is up with the grill, like it has a radiator behind it for a large #ICE Motor.
That has got to create uncalled for *Drag* ❗️
Maybe they added exhaust pipes too just for fun.
Hi Sam
I love your information - very informative
BUT please STOP going on how good you are !
all wishes for your wife
Thanks Mate!
In the continued absence of a fully electric replacement for the Volvo V90, this is going to have to get a looking over when It comes out.
I own a 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero station wagon and honestly if saab gets back in business and if they make a brand new saab 9-5 aero station wagon that is an ev with a solid state battery. Then i will buy one.and I prefer saab over volkswagon.
The probable reason Americans don't buy wagons is that the manufacturers have decided that they only want SUVs, and they no longer have the option
The problem with German cars are software quality and everything you must pay as extra. Korean and Chinese start to hit this with a lot included in the price and solid software
still using the id4 base platform with the garbage software, they seam to think if they keep making the samp crap that it will automatically fox itself, the whole id system needs fixed not a few lines off code
If it's not a Tesla on this channel it's always negative news. Am I right?
We should call this channel the Tesla Promotional Network...
Tesla's the best 👍👍👍!
Sam, GM posted very solid profits and brat expectations, by a lot. They also secured the largest lithium deposit in the US and the 3rd largest in the world. Where is your story on this news????
Not sure this old conservative design will find its customers... the world has changed, and customers are more attracted by aggressive designs like the ones of VW Cupra or the latest Stellantis Peugeot 308 and 408 here in Europe, which put SUV styling on low height non SUV cars. This "new" passat looks like it was produced 10 years ago ! Who wants to buy something that looks old ???
Это очен красивый пассат
Пассати все красивый молацы вам германия
cool
I am not sure because even in Europe they love this shape, those lovers are ICE lovers too... I prefer SUVs as much better proportioned to take a big battery under the floor...
PS. The problem is the same as before: production level and selling price...
Only for low price of $95K 😮😮😂😂
I think you have some good insights, but I gotta say your constant hate for VW is tiring. The id.4 is great. Small SUV/large wagon form factor, fast charging, competitive range, sold close to cost. VW and Hyundai are leading the Tesla competition.
Hey I can draw and design a cool flying car! What I’ll build won’t look a thing like it and will use rubber bands for power. How about folks buy my stock instead of VW’s? Yeah…sure….
Oh wait this is what VW is doing already.
Looks like tailpipes to me
Mate where do you get your facts from, one of the most popular cars is Tesla Model 3 sedan!
As a family man I can understand you want SUV or cans etc but sedans are nicer to drive and suit a lot of other people who don’t carry chairs in the back!
its just a concept, dont you remember how beautiful the VW van concept and how badly VW screwed it up when they produced it.?
Pass. For the most part. Until the legacy auto makers produce new EVs on purpose built EV platforms, then whatever cars are made with EV/hybrid/ICE platforms will be compromised, as they will be just too heavy.
I've have a good idea to make money for vw with ev,take buggati brand and make badget ev😂
Bland redesign effort.
Why do they keep on trying to make itinerations of their current design language? Simple: conservative. Safer business. Please MAKE us cars that are inspiring, a revolution rather than an evolution.
Yep they "thought" about it realy hard in endless meetings with people who never ever built something, in endless power point battles and supplier telecons, calling that "work". Endless business trips, bloated budgets and yelling to their underlings while defending their department in an endless game of thrones of ideocracy. Zero respect for middle management in these cooperations; Zero!!!
As I drive our Tesla Model Y around town I know that everyone who sees it with more than 10 working neurons knows it's an electric vehicle.
I get stopped all the time in parking lots with folks asking "How do you like it"
I respond back "Love it but can't recommend it - too complex as your primary family car"
Well that always sets them back but they always know the car is electric.
Name another car that people instantly know its electric and stop their owners?
Major screw up by Legacy Auto
I see you still think that by 2030 people will only want to buy EVs.
Nope❕️ Sticking with the Ugly but well-proven *"**#Teslas**"* when it comes to a *"Fully Electric Vehicle"* . ❕️⚡️❕️
VW just hope to still be around in 2025 (very unlikely). They are constantly looking for something more they can sell😂😂
totally... sound a lot like a Tesla Fanboy COPIUM. 😆😆😆
The ID cars looks fantastic. If the destign of the ID cars didnt compromise functionaliy I honestly dont get what the heck their thinking. This pasat though is boring. At best its a bit retro, but unfortunately in the most boring way.
This design is insipid. The MG4 has a good designer. In the US I don't enjoy the low seating position and lack of ground clearance of a wagon. Model Y is the best seller for these reasons and ot This car? I don't think so.hers. Plus Tesla can price the Y and make money.
Owned 2 VW in my life, never again. Electrical problem made them à disaster. Now same thing with there software. Diesel gate was the cherry on the sundae .
Sorry, but the design of this passat looks as ugly as the previous ones (as ugly of the Golf).
they look like funeral cars
this is going to be only ICE ... HEV and PHEV. not EV... id.7 is gonna be EV. too bad
It looks nice - in the 80’s / early 90’s . Not in 2023 . Boring and old fashioned.
Why does it look amazing? Its generic VW, nothing exciting about it
vw used to be cool, don't know what happened.
VWS have been ugly for years. They should hire Porsche designers.
VW Designs Will Crush Tesla
Lol
😂
😂😂😂😂 VW just hope to still be around in 2025 (very unlikely) they won’t be “crushing “ anyone…
I think its ugly imo
I've have a good idea to make money for vw with ev,take buggati brand and make badget ev😂
